Product Description

The Reef Aquarium Volume Three: Science, Art, and Technology Reefkeeping science involves the interplay of biology, chemistry, and physics. However, a reef aquarium is not simply a product of scientific knowledge. The application of engineering and its product technology, makes it possible to duplicate the specific biological, chemical, and physical requirements of a coral reef in a relatively small volume of water. This third volume in The Reef Aquarium series, provides the most thorough description of the science behind the creation of a captive reef, and critically reviews and explains the different philosophical approaches to reef aquarium design. It also describes and illustrates the existing as well as emerging technology for building reef aquariums, to help guide the selection of equipment, its proper use, and installation. While science and technology afford the blank canvas and tools to build a suitable life support system, the plants, animals, and of course the aquarist provide the final ingredient that we call art. This art also involves the system design as it relates to the living space, the aesthetic appearance of the display, and its ease of maintenance, safety, and functionality. To this end, this book provides a wealth of information regarding aquascaping techniques, which combine art, biology, and physics; and invaluable information regarding plumbing, electrical, and other aspects of the aquarium design that combine art and engineering. Lastly, this book discusses the benefits and potential environmental impacts of the marine aquarium hobby, the challenges for its future, and possible new directions. The Reef Aquarium volume three is the essential manual for all reef aquarium hobbyists, professional aquarists, and coral reef researchers who study, create, and enjoy coral reef ecosystems in the confines of an aquarium. 5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-10-02

This book is packed full of tons of information. It is great for newbies and even has stuff for veterans; definitely a book for the library.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the money.......2007-07-13

This is a very complete reference. It covers all the nuts and bolts of a reef tank set-up. It does not cover any fish or inverts, but the first two books took care of that. This book is the first place to go for tank set-up and care. It is good for reference or just to read. Very well done!

5 out of 5 stars 1st and Last book you may ever need.......2007-06-28

I have all three volumes. Each volume is more dedicated to a certain area. If all you ever buy is the 3 volumes you will do very well in reef aquariums. These books cover the scientific as well as the beginner basics. Each book on its own has enough information to make your reef aquarium thrive. I would recommend getting all three if you feel you need more information.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Reefkeeping Information.......2007-01-28

Excellent book. There is quite a bit of information for the reefkeeper from novice to advanced. Covers water quality , aquascaping, plumbing, equipment, lighting, water movement, feeding and more in depth. I wish I had read this volume before starting my first tank. It would have saved me a lot of money, time and frustration.

5 out of 5 stars Best value for money!.......2007-01-18

I own over 20 books on reef keeping and related topics. I must say that this book is one of the most comprehensive books on the subject I have read to date. I am planning to buy 2 more books from the series.

4 out of 5 stars serves its purpose.......2007-07-25

Cute book. I liked all the info except it talks about what temp. to keep your fish tank at.......and I used it for a preschool students. Way over their heads.

Overall, good info, realistic, and cute!

        5 out of 5 stars A must-have for elementary science teachers.......2007-04-05

This is an excellent book to introducing the levels of classification for living things. This book explored the physiology of fish in language that young children can understand. The facts are presented in a way that is not overwhelming to children. The illustrations are great and they really show what its like to be a fish. I have used this book with my preschoolers and they love it.

        4 out of 5 stars Unexamined metaphysics.......2006-08-28

My boy brought this home the school library and the title of the book intrigued me. What is it like to swim by swishing your tail, round and round, in a small little bowl; or, eating fish flakes sprinkled from above when the person decides it's time to be fed; or to live in an environment that deteriorates day after day into murkiness until you are suddenly scooped up by a net and put into an even smaller container while your bowl is being cleaned? What IS it like to be a fish? Alas, there are no answers to that question found in this book -- pity.

But ontological musings aside, this book is a good little read for kids who, for the first time, are interested in having a fish as a pet. The book uses the common goldfish as its example. It shows the different environments in which a little child might encounter a fish: a bowl, an aquarium, a plastic bag being brought home from the pet store and swimming around in a backyard pond. It also tells what the different fins are called, how do fish sleep, are they warm or cold-blooded, how do they breath water when I can't, and similar questions a young child might ask when they have their first fish. It tells you how to set up a goldfish bowl and why you put the bag in the water for awhile without setting the fishies free. Basic stuff for the adult, good for the child who shows interest in having a fish pet. Now if only that title-question was answered...

5 out of 5 stars Great science book for young kids!.......2001-04-05

Wendy Pfeffer has a talent for making difficult science concepts understandable to young children. This is a lively and very kid-friendly book with cheerful illustrations that kids will enjoy and learn from.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Interesting topic but very shallow contents.......2007-10-04

This book first details the concept of Web 2.0, then how the mobile technology can be the part of Web 2.0 (Mobile Web 2.0), followed by the description of many components such as location technology and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem). The authors also discusses the business aspects of Mobile Web 2.0.

This book contains a few interesting observations. Especially the cultural and business difference between the Internet world and the telecommunication industry (labeled as 'Open Gardens' and 'Walled Gardens' respectively) is worth noting. However, I can hardly recommend this book mainly due to its very shallow explanation of related topics. Almost all the references in the book are from web pages, and it contains very very few literal references. I don't think siting web pages itself is a bad idea, but it is embarrassing to see the authors siting and even quoting from Wikipedia without giving a timestamp. This implies that the authors have never done thorough research on the technical topics.

Another problem I see in this book is that the authors' discussions were not really based on the real observation but rather remained very conceptual. I like the idea of using mobile devices to publish information as the authors propose, but this would require detailed survey of device capabilities, user interface issues, and so on. Unfortunately, you cannot find practical information to tackle with such problems.

It is a great book to read. My first experience with Amazon and I make a good book selection to read. An open-minded book with lot of issues to think and rethink about wireless.

          Book Description

Quantitative methods and mathematical modelling are of critical importance to fishery science and management but, until now, there has been no book that offers the sharp focus, methodological detail, and practical examples needed by non-specialist fishery scientists and managers, and ecologists. Modelling and Quantitative Methods in Fisheries fills that void. To date, methodology books in fisheries science have been limited to cookbook approach to problems; simple compilations; or expositions in which either too much theory or insufficient methodological detail is given. The text is organized into three sections: an introduction to modelling in fisheries and ecology, a straight methodology section covering a range of methods, and a section focusing on specific fields in fisheries science. This book is timely as it addresses a topic of recent debate in fisheries and ecology, describing and comparing the uses of Least Squares, Maximum Likelihood, and Bayesian quantitative methods. Designed as stand-alone units, each chapter provides examples from both classic and recent literature and comes with dedicated Excel spreadsheets that permit you to delve into every detail of the analysis. All of these spreadsheets serve as active examples, which can easily be modified and customized and can be used as templates for analyzing your own data. The spreadsheets permit you to learn at your own speed and cover the simplest linear regression to the more complex non-linear modelling using maximum likelihood. Data analysis and modelling are best learned by doing and not just by reading. This book illustrates, step by step, the analyses it covers. More detailed in terms of introductory quantitative methods and modelling as applied to fisheries than any other book available, Modelling and Quantitative Methods in Fisheries gives you the advantage by supplying the full details of the analysis so that understanding the material is a matter of following the book.

5 out of 5 stars A primer for all of us.......2003-12-29

In my opinion, Malcolm Haddon has managed a "tour de force" with this book. He not only covered most of the modern methods of quantitative analysis and modelling in fisheries science but he did so in a clear and relatively simple language. His book is approachable to all biologists with a basic understanding of mathematics and statistics. Yet, he managed to cover both the theoretical underpinnings of the methods and the practical aspects of their use (options, pitfalls ... etc.). In addition, the book gives MS Excel examples of the methods which should allow those of us who are not programmers to fully appreciate the methods by using them interactively. The Excel spreadsheets are also available for download on two web sites.

          Book Description

This book provides a comprehensive and current source of information on fishes—including systematics, zoogeography, behavior, and conservation of fishes—that is often needed by professionals as background for writing accurate reports. This book covers the structure and physiology, evolution and taxonomy, zoogeography, and ecology and conservation of fishes. For fisheries biologists, conservation biologists, and aquatic ecologists that need an up-to-date reference on Ichthyology.

          1 out of 5 stars A total waste.......2007-09-01

This "outline" consists of terms with definitions which would be okay if the terms matched the text or if the definitions matched ichthyology! In practically every chapter, you'll be given the term, "water column." In chapter 18 when you see the term "water column" yet one more time, you wonder where the information is about the minnow family that is supposed to be the subject of the chapter. In chapter 36, you see the term, "surface water" for the umpteenth time, but nothing about Arctic fishes or their adaptations. In summary, there is NO OUTLINE-FORM for ANYTHING!, just the same old elementary biology terms over and over again.

Be sure to note that the online access has NO additional information from the text, so DO NOt pay for online access--IT'S WORTHLESS TOO!

Only terms might be okay, except they don't match the text. For example the term "operculum" has several definitions; and in ichthyology it means the bony covering of a gill. But this book reports the definition of "operculum" to be: "The operculum is partly in the most posterior portion of the inferior frontal gyrus of the frontal lobe in the brain. One famous part of the operculum is Broca's area which plays an important role in converzation [sic] or speech production, reading and writing" (page 8). Clearly one can see that this text does not match my ichthyology texbook about fish! Speech reading, writing and speaking in fish? This is total rip-off!

          1 out of 5 stars Wrong Book.......2006-08-19

I had to return this item because it was incorrectly represented on the website. It is advertised as the book but, in reality, it is a study guide that it made to accompany the book. It is important that Amazon make that distinction on the website.

5 out of 5 stars Very Accessible Introduction Even for a Non-Specialist.......2005-05-21

Moyle and Cech's text reads like two books, Cech's introduction to fish anatomy and Moyle's discussion of behavior and conservation (which is precisely how they use the text in their UC Davis classes). While first half of the book is much more technical than the second half, both are accessible to the non-specialist. I hadn't taken Biology since High School and was able to process most of the material with minimal referencing of secondary sources. Both authors are good writers who incorporate subtle humor and have the ability to convey some of their passion for fish making this a somewhat less dry text book than the general tendency. I learned an incredible amount from these pages and highly recommend this text.

          4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-03-03

This is really a great text book that covers everything from anatomy, behaviour and fish senses, passing through each fish order, until reach valiable aspects of fish comprehension, like zoogeography and aquatic ecology. Because it's scientific writing, the book is fullfilled with graphics and diagrams, so in the beginning the unaware reader should feel such level of difficulty, but it doesnt compromises at all the inner knowledge the book wants to pass.
          Sure an awesome title!

4 out of 5 stars THE text on the fishes..........2001-10-30

I am an avid fish fanatic. Moyle and Cech have produced what should be the greatest book of scientific interest on the subject. Seems like there is a but there? There is, this is a text book. If you are taking ichthyology, an upper level (sometimes graduate level) course on fishes this book will be your best friend. It is critical to understanding the largest group of vertebrates. It is well organized, fact filled and well cited. But, if you don't have Biology one and two, some chemistry, physiology and an introductory zoology course behind you it will lose you at the introduction. Even though I rate it high I would wait until a professor says you have to buy it.
