The Bible of X-ray Diffraction.......2000-09-20
Klug & Alexanders book on X-ray diffraction has since it's release, of the first edition in 1954, been and still is the ultimate book on X-ray diffraction procedures. It covers any subject of interest to X-Ray Diffraction form "Elementary Crystallography" and "Properties and Production of X-rays" through "Precision and Errors" to "Operations of X-ray machinery" and many more. Even today, over 25 years after the release of the lasest edition, "X-ray Diffraction Procedures" is because of it's thoroughness, attention to detail, number and depth of subjects dealt with still a must for anybody working with X-Ray Diffraction. The depth, width and fundamental nature of the subject dealt with, and the book as a whole, more than makes the fact the it isn't up to date with the latest technical innovations. There can be no douth that "X-Ray Diffraction Procedures" is the Bible of X-ray diffraction.

I found this book to be a very nice introduction of X-Ray Crystallography. There is just enough detail so that it is not overwhelming, but you can still learn quite a bit from this book.
good introduction to crystallography.......2006-07-05
For an undergrad reader, Hammond develops the theory and explains the experiments you can do in crytallography. The theory of scattering from a single crystal explains the diffraction patterns. The latter are what you observe, and the text shows how you can work back from these to deduce what the underlying crystal structure might be.
There are variations on this approach. Especially the powder method, where you do not have a single crystal, but a powder of microcrystals. Which can be visualised as spinning the Bravais lattice around its origin, to give the diffraction patterns.
More recent observations like quasicrystals are also covered.
A good introduction to crystallography.

Very nice book, very comprehensive, excellent quality of pictures. Can be recommended as a very gentle introduction to crystallography and diffraction. Probably not so useful for more advanced students.

still uses Schonflies notation?!.......2007-06-24
For any physicist or chemist involved in finding the structure of a given crystal, this book gives a useful read. It treats the subject at a level suitable for a 3rd or 4th year undergrad, who has access to the various crystallographic equipment described in the book. Like a 3 circle goniometer, CCD collection system, and a computer for data reduction. The basic ideas often involve finding the reciprocal space of the latter, via the scattering.
There is not much quantum mechanical theory here. Much of the treatment involves classical scattering off the atoms in the crystal. A more sophisticated text would describe the QM. But it turns out that for finding structures, the book's level of analysis is quite adequate.
What could be a little surprising is that in the descriptions of the crystal classes, that Schonflies notation is also used, along with the standard international notation. In the early 80s, Schonflies notation was being phased out. Surprised to see it still in use.
The Book Doctors Recommend Most.......2005-08-14
This is the ideal book for the beginner and in my opinion a must-read. In the excellent translation by Robert O. Gould, "Crystal Structure Determination" by Werner Massa explains all the basics from symmetry in real and reciprocal space, over generation of X-rays and other practical aspects, all the way to structure solution and refinement. Massa keeps the book simple and understandable and uses mathematical formulae carefully and only when helpful or necessary.
I learned the basics of crystallography from the German original of "the Massa". Now that I am a teacher of crystallography myself, this is the book I recommend to my students.
Useful tool for all dealing with structure determination.......2001-09-12
Single crystal structure determination has become an important and extremely powerful tool not only for inorganic and structural chemists but for all kinds of chemists interested in the structures of their compounds. The major disadvantage of this method was hitherto the lack of useful introductions into it's practical use.
This gap has been filled by Massa's book.
It focuses - unlike other crystallography books - on the practical applications and enables the reader to attack own structural problems by himself. Additionally, this book will provide the necessary theoretical background to understand how X-ray diffraction works, how crystals are built, all this symmetry stuff and so on.
The absolute highlight is, however, the step-by-step explanation of a structure determination, where one can almost see the author sitting in front of his computer and struggling with one of his structures, explaining every step in detail.
Crystallography still needs heavy brain work sometimes. But this book won't cause unnecessary headaches as many other crystallography books do.
Therefore, I recommend this book warmly to my crystallography students.

Depends on who you are and what you want..........2007-09-28
Jan Drenth is an old school protein crystallographer who has seen the evolution of the field right from its inception in the 1950s to the present day. He belongs to the era when Protein Crystallography was dominated by people with serious math and physics skills like Maurice Wilkins, Rosalind Franklin, Francis Crick, Max Perutz and John Kendrew. Owing to the lack of good computers in those days, all the calculations had to be done by hand and there was no way you could solve a protein structure if you didn't know what a Fourier Transform was. The situation is very different nowadays where, thanks to computers, even a person who doesn't know how to differentiate a function can solve protein structures.
Understandably, owing to the author's experiences and background, this book is an excellent one for people interested in the real math behind protein crystallography. It is much on the lines of the other classic book by Blundell and Johnson, also crystallographers belonging to the same era as Jan Drenth. It is quite full of mathematics and therefore, is not recommended for biologists or chemists with weak math skills. For such people I would recommend other introductory books on the subject written by Gale Rhodes, David Blow and Alex McPherson. A good approach would be to learn the basics from these intoductory books and 'graduate' to Drenth's book later.
Not Helpful for a introductory class.......2006-12-07
I used this text book for an introductory graduate class in X-ray Crystallograhy. After taking a semester of X-ray Crystallograhy (which is labeled as a Chemistry and Biochemistry course), I can say that the material is mainly based on physics and mathematics. I can't say that this text helped a great deal for my course. The text does not explain relevant points such as Miller indices, symmetry elements, or space groups clearly or in much depth. Instead, it spends too much time explaining concepts mathematically and deriving equations. It also does not contain any relevant practice problems, which are needed to understand Crystallography and practice for exams.
X-ray Crystallography is a very dense subject, and is not a course to take on a whim. I would not reccomend taking a course on Crystallography unless you have a really intense interest in pursuing research in that area. If you are interested in this area, do not buy this text even if it is required for your course. Take a look at Crystallography Made Crystal Clear by Gale Rhodes. That book is much clearer, though also lacks sufficient practice problems.
Decent text, but better Crystallography books are out there........2002-09-16
Drenth is a decent enough book. The figures are ok, nothing great. They mostly just drive home the point made in the text, but are not instructive in and upon themselves. If you are looking to get a basic understanding of X-Ray crystallography and its uses to solve protein structure try the Gale Rhodes book. If you are looking for a more rigorous book try the Michael M. Woolfson book. Drenth tries to be the middle ground between the two. The subject though is too complicated to do it justice like that. Either keep it simple or go in depth.
Best introductory text.......2001-04-17
Best introductory text for macromolecular xray crystallography. Simple and succinct mathematical explanation of basic concepts. It provides enough background for students to start a research project.

X-ray diffraction has been intimately tied with practical applications in the study of the structure of materials. All the way to the determination of the double helix structure of DNA in 1953, and of course, beyond that, to the present day.
The book gives a thorough exposition of the theory of X-ray scattering. From the simple and early dynamical theory of Ewald to how electromagnetic radiation propagates and scatters in a crystal. Then there are discussions of dynamical theory of planar-wave Bragg scattering, And further talk on more advanced theories. Like how a spherical wave might scatter.
Then many examples of applications are gone into, like building out X-ray optics, to be on an equivalent functional par with conventional visible spectrum optics. Much of the X-ray optical capability, like building monochromator crystals, X-ray wave guides, multilayers and Fresnel zone plates, is of relatively recent vintage; like the last 20 years.

Intended to acquaint the reader with the theory of x-ray diffraction, the experimental methods involved, and the main applications. The book is a collection of principles and methods stressing X-ray diffraction rather than metallurgy.
The book is written entirely in terms of the Bragg law and can be read without any knowledge of the reciprocal lattice. It is divided into three main parts—Fundamentals; experimental methods; and applications.
Designed for beginners, not as a reference tool for the advanced reader.

This is a good reference book for persons who does x-ray diffraction studies. It tells all the practical things without going too deep into the theory.
Horrible textbook.......2005-12-17
B. D. Cullity has authored or co-authored several textbooks on x-ray diffraction that are commonly used in college classes on diffraction. This version by Addison-Wesley which was first published in the late 1970's is probably the worst one. The text is very difficult to understand, equations are not fully explained, and many terms are used that can be quite unfamiliar to engineers and scientists without prior knowledge of reciprocal space and crystallography. The book attempts to explain the entire concept of diffraction using Bragg's law, without providing the more intuitive view of photons and electrons in the Brillouin Zone. As such, the conceptualization is tricky even though the math is not that difficult. I would not recommend buying, or even using this book, for learning or teaching about diffraction.
Poorly Edited Edition.......2003-08-22
Cullity's expostion of x-ray diffraction is excellent, but the third edition, as noted by other reviewers, is missing all chapter specific references. If you're interested in this title, try to find a copy of the second edition.
disappointing.......2001-07-09
The 2nd Edition of "Elements of X-ray Diffraction" by B.D. Cullity ranks among the best introductory books ever written on the subject. When I bought this 3rd edition I hoped to obtain a book of similar standards. However, exchanging chapter titles (to less meaningful descriptors) and a mere renumbering of chapters and appendices (leaving nearly the complete body of the 2nd edition unchanged) was far from my expectations. I have sincere doubts, if the few brief sections added in this 3rd edition provide much useful information for a newcomer. Somehow, I feel they destroy the integrity of an old well-written text. Above all the publisher obviously did a poor job: The pages with "Chapter references" were completely lost somehow (they amounted to 9 pages in the 2nd edition) and are dearly missed whenever a reader wants to dwell a little bit deeper into the subject and use the citations provided in the text. If you want to go for a good introductory text on X-ray diffraction then choose the 2nd edition. Although based on knowledge of the sixties, and thus slightly old-fashioned, it still makes the point in a consistent and scholarly way. Let's hope the 2nd edition will be available for some time.

but third edition is not yet.

Book Description
Crystal structure analysis from powder diffraction data has attracted considerable and ever growing interest in the last decades. X-ray powder diffraction is best known for phase analysis (Hanawalt files) dating back to the 30s. In the late 60s the inherent potential of powder diffraction for crystallographic problems was realized and scientists developed methods for using powder diffraction data at first only for the refinement of crystal structures. With the development of ever growing computer power profile fitting and pattern decomposition allowed to extract individual intensities from overlapping diffraction peaks opening the way to many other applications, especially to ab initio structure determination. Powder diffraction today is used in X-ray and neutron diffraction, where it is a powerful method in neutron diffraction for the determination of magnetic structures. In the last decade the interest has dramatically improved. There is hardly any field of crystallography where the Rietveld, or full pattern method has not been tried with quantitative phase analysis the most important recent application.
