5 out of 5 stars Excellent book! (I scored 800).......2005-02-05

This is an truely excellent book. I am not fortunate to have a very deep chemistry curriculum available in the schools in my city (it is actually well recognized as being terrible) but after completing all the chemistry courses available to me I ordered this book off Amazon and realized how much I did not know. I probably spent about 30 mins a night every night give or take for a month, near the end studying several hours everyday. The lab questions in this book, what I found to be the most difficult part, are largely useless and are not on the actual exam but are still good practice.

I would however advise this book for only those seeking to achieve high scores because the content is somewhat difficult and demanding. Good luck

2 out of 5 stars Extraneous info...myriad typos.......2004-06-02

This book has a lot of information in it, but the extraneous matter shifts your focus away from the important stuff that's actually covered on the test. The practice tests in the book in no way reflect the real ones. Worst of all, there are countless mistakes, typos, and missing answers. Don't buy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Long and Detailed Review.......2003-06-08

The Barron's SAT II Chemistry book is extremely long and detailed and has tests that exaggerate difficulty. Each chapter does a good job of covering the core material but it also adds alot of extra information that will probably not be seen on the test. In fact, in the nuclear chemistry section, the book goes into sub atomic particles known as quarks, which havent been seen on the test in ages. The practice tests at first are very pessimistic and are quite difficult.
Yet, if you do study this book completely, take the practice test and correct your answers, there is no reason you shouldnt get an 800 on the SAT II. I found the exaggerated difficulty annoying at sometimes, but, its a tough way of forcing you to do good. In short, if you have plenty of time to prepare for the SAT II, buy this book, and do it cover to cover. Your results should be wonderful.

1 out of 5 stars STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK!!!.......2002-10-13

Way too much unneccessary information. It's too compact. Most of the stuff do not appear on the real SAT II. It will give you a migraine every time you intend to study from it. But if you do buy this book, stay away from the laboratory setups, and do not attempt to memorize anything. It's useless and come test day you will be juggling pieces of rubbish in your head.

5 out of 5 stars Chem SATII Review by a Chemistry Teacher.......2002-05-29

An excellent Chem SATII prep guide--includes 5 practice tests with correct answers and their explanations, test breakdowns by subject matter, and chemistry content summaries by topic.

Cautions:
Be aware that there are some typos/incorrect answers to test questions. The book also emphasizes laboratory set-ups and some chemical reactions that aren't likely to be part of ANY high school chemistry curriculum for safety reasons (i.e., collection of H2S and HCl gases); nor are they part of most current Chem SAT II tests.

1 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE!!!.......2006-05-31

Wow... I was relunctant to write a review for this book, but its atrocities was too overwhelming to ignore. I would NOT recommend this book. Buy Barron's, it's harder, but prepares you much better. This book is just filled with too many errors. First off, some of the multiple choice answers don't match with the explanation. Such as this one problem on page. 83 where the explanation says the answer is A, yet the answer they give you on top is B. Other problems abound when they try to explain simple things such as Electron Affinity. I don't know what kind of explanation they attempt to give but whatever it is, it is far off from what I've learned in my Chemistry AP class and from what my teacher has taught (Also different from the Princenton Review Explanation). I would NOT recommend this book. If you do buy this book. God Bless you when you take the test.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Good material, thats it.......2007-06-04

I am an above average student taking Honors Chemistry. I got this book because I had used the Barron's series of SAT II review books before. The material in this book was good, it has very good explanations, the lab setups were descriptive and overall the explanations were very helpful. Then I moved on to the practice tests. Going through the answers to the practice tests, I made an alarming discovery, some of the answers were blatantly incorrect. The book kept switching endothermic and exothermic reactions on its test answers (for example, they had the graph of the required activation energy for a specific reaction however it was incorrectly labeled as being endothermic when it was really exothermic) For questions 100 - 115 on the test, if statements A and B were true and CE, then there would be no explanation for the answers at all. On occasions, the book said that information on a specific topic could be found on page X but once I got there it was nowhere to be found. There were other, numerous incorrect answers that they said were actually correct.

So overall, the book has very good information and it is a good study aid, but you must make sure that when you take a practice test you actually check the answers that the book provides to make sure that they are correct because on several occasions, the answers they provide are incorrect.

5 out of 5 stars THANK YOU FOR AN 800!.......2006-10-11

I credit my 800 on SAT Chemistry mostly to this book (partly to McGraw-Hill's). It has an impressive depth of explanation that is easy to follow, and doesn't miss a thing.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT MATERIAL.......2006-07-04

This book, as the title suggests, is an excellent review book for the SAT II Chemistry. I found that other prep book such as Kaplans was completely useless compared to this one. The Barrons book offers many practice tests which are a bit harder than the actual test. I got mostly 780s and 1 800. However on the Kaplans test, I got lower scores (760, 780). Besides the tests, this book explains the experimental section (which many books lack) of the AP Chemistry test very well. It even gives you an organized table of physical properties of commonly tested chemicals. Although the book may look dissapointingly thin, it is a must for all SAT II Chemistry takers. On the real test, I got an 800.

5 out of 5 stars my savior. .......2005-12-24

i had a chemistry teacher who went over the entire acids&bases unit in a week, and im not a fan of our textbook. My whole review was based on this book, and i got a 800 on the exam. This book does a very thorough job of covering everything(maybe a little bit more) you need to know, and the practice exams are a teeny bit harder than the real test which means u will be very well prepared. I recommend going over this book fully(buy it, mark in it, et cetera), then borrow the princeton review book from the library or something to do the practice tests and skim over the contents because it's a bit more organized. don't bother with the kaplan book. it sucks.

3 out of 5 stars Well organized, but little practice questions........2005-06-06

This is a good book except for the fact that it lacks enough practice questions. It provides a very good review but needs more practiºce material.

5 out of 5 stars OMG OMG THANK YOU FOR THE 800.......2007-09-13

i was an average student in a non-honors chemistry class, who barely got a 90. however, thanks to this book, i received an 800 on the sat ii chemistry test! when i found out, i was extremely happy but not too surprised because on test day, i was able to answer every question effortlessly. i couldn't believe how easily i was able to go through the test. it was amazing how i knew exactly how to answer every question. i left the test center feeling sure that i would get at least a 780 on the test and i did!
i purchased both the princeton review and barrons books but neither can measure up to the kaplan book. the review is perfect; it contained just the right amount of information and was easy to follow, except it lacked the two sections on descriptive chemistry and experimentation. simply read the barron's for those. i also advise you to take the practice tests in the barrons book because they are much harder than the real test.
    overall, this book is EXCELLENT!

    5 out of 5 stars superb!!.......2004-10-11

This is overally is excellent. Every chapter covers the concepts which you need on the SAT II examination. The depth is actually much deeper, compared with the Baron's and Princeton Review. If one wants a in depth review on the chemistry, this book is for him. After finishing this book(I mean really really understand every conception shown on the book), one is not only well prepared for the SATII chemistry test, but also well equiped for a undergraduate chemistry study. However, I recommend everyone who is using this book also use the baron's because this book is hard enough to confuse anyone by its simple appearance and lack of calculation practice.

3 out of 5 stars Ok but unorganized.......2004-07-19

The Kaplan book is quite comprehensive but the lack of diagrams and the disorganized state of the book can make this a boring read. It goes over a lot of useless info that may be confusing and the text may lose you in some parts. If you have a lot of self motivation and patience, this book may work out for you. Be sure to read up on Barrons because it is quite a bit more user friendly and is organized more like a high school chemistry book which is much more familiar to most students.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Preparation.......2004-07-19

The Kaplan SAT II Chemistry book provides excellent preparation for the exam. The extensive information covered details almost everthing that you could possibly want to know for this exam. However, there are several useless pieces of information in this book. The equilibrium equations with natural logs, etc. are all extra useless stuff. Also the extra material for atomic orbitals is not on the SAT II. No one will ask you about the specific name of quantum numbers. This extra stuff means that they didn't put in enough descriptive chemistry review and experimentation, hence only 4 stars. Not perfect, but if you buy either Chemistry the Easy way or the other Barrons SAT II book and read up on the two great chapters on experiments and descriptive chemistry you're all set. I recommend buying the REA book as well for the practice. Nothing improves your score as much as practice.

    5 out of 5 stars Got me a 800!!.......2004-01-19

I used this book in conjunction w/ Barron's and Princeton Review and I got an 800, mostly thanx to this book. Barron's was too detailed, but good for reference and practice tests. Princeton review was 2 broad.

5 out of 5 stars The single most effective guide to the SAT2 Chemistry.......2005-06-07

I took both practice tests the morning of the SAT2 and found the diversity of questions to be extremely well-correlated with the actual test. Barron's and Kaplan's test questions contain far greater discrepancies in style and format. It's true that the princeton review study guide is "dumbed-down", but it's effective for cramming purposes and utilizes nifty techniques for optimum memorization and fantastic conceptualization. I recieved an 800 on my first testing.

3 out of 5 stars If you need a little refresher............2004-06-19

I bought this book two weeks before the SAT II Chemistry exam so I could get a feeling for what would be on the test. I had already studied extensively for the AP exam and was already familiar with all of the concepts. I did get a 780 on the SAT II, but I wouldn't attribute it all to this book.

The tips and tricks provided were mediocre at best (ex. Don't let the BIG WORDS fool you!)

I felt the actual material was presented in a very "dumbed-down" manner that (like other Princeton Review Books) was targeted at a student looking for a 500+ score. If you weren't familiar with the concepts in the first place, this book isn't going to help you learn them. As a very light refresher for someone who took the AP three weeks before the SAT II, this will be sufficient.

Probably the best part of the whole book is the exam section. I felt the difficulty very closely mirrored that of the actual SAT II. My scores on the practice exams (780 and 790) very closely reflected that of my own actual score (780)

So if you're looking for a quick refresher and introduction to the test format, this book is for you. If you aren't familiar with basic chemistry concepts and want a book to teach you the material, I suggest you look elsewhere.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of mistakes.......2004-05-15

This book has a lot of typos and other mistakes. please think twice before buying it.

1 out of 5 stars Think about it first.......2003-11-12

Princeton doesn't provide a good amount of information and will not improve your grade much. After using this book, I scored a 550, but after using Barron's, I scored 740. Barron's is the ultiate testbook. It may seem hard but it gives you every tiny detail necessary that may come on the actual exam. I would recommend Barron's for everyone taking the SAT II Biology or Kaplan as a second choice. I would only recommend Princeton if it was the only or last book left for the SAT II Biology.

      4 out of 5 stars IT'S A GOOD REVIEW.......2003-07-02

If you're looking for a little review before the test, this book will help. It is very general and does oversimply things, but it helps. The tests in it are accurate, exept for the third one which is exeptinally hard.

        1 out of 5 stars Terrible!!!.......2004-05-02

I'll cut straight to the point - the course review is quite nearly unintelligable, especially the part about organic nomenclature. The editing is abysmal; numerous typos abound, and there are certain questions on the provided practice tests where the answers don't match up and the explanations are just wrong. I would bet my life on the fact that the following statement is false: "All matter is composed of small particles called molecules". We all know atoms, rather than molecules, fit this sentence better, but apparently, the book doesn't agree. The typo problem especially hurts when you're trying to make heads or tails of a question and the typo just throws everything off (i.e. 10.2 when 1x10^-2 is meant). All in all, if you absolutely need to practice and can't find anything else, use this as your last resort. I have to admit, it's better than nothing.

5 out of 5 stars six good practice tests; terse review.......2001-04-21

One of the best ways to learn is to take frequent tests and review the answers. This book was designed for exactly that process. The title promises to be the "best test preparation" for the SAT II cheistry. I think it is for a certain market. It has six pratice tests with explanations which put it right up with Barron's which also has six. The review is very terse which is best unless you don't happen to understand something in which case look at the demonstration problems in a general chemistry textbook. The coverage is stronger on general principles relative to its coverage on particular labratory reactions such as T/F: does HCl(g) gas react with NH3(g) to produce a white smoke? This is in a Barron's test. Whether or not this book is valuable to me is beyond any debate. It is because it has six original practice tests which take about an hour each and supplies the answers with explainations.

        3 out of 5 stars How wrong I was.......2000-10-16

Don't get me wrong. REA is an excellent AP History preparation book. But, when it comes to the SAT II Subject Tests, the REA books are nothing in comparison to Barrons and Kaplan. REA does not go into depth. The organization of the book is poorly put together. Unlike REA, Barrons starts off their book with the simple subject of matter. REA jumps to to top of the pyramid at the start of the book without even establishing a foundation. The discussion on matter and the periodic table is almost the last area reviewed. In general, the REA Chemistry book is vague. It lists out equations and then expects you to understand them without explanations. After taking the Chemistry SATs twice, I strongly suggest Barrons. The Barrons book definitely reflected my 790 score. If you buy Barrons, don't just think that you will automatically do great on the Chemistry SAT test. You're going to have to read.

        5 out of 5 stars A great preparation book.......1999-07-04

I am very strong in chemistry but the SAT II test was still much more than I could have handled without this book. When I took the first practice test I got a 500 score and was very upset, but I reviewed the questions I got wrong and got better and better. I received a 750 on the actual test and know that it is because of this book.
