Book Description
The development of techniques to analyze biomedical signals, such as electro-cardiograms, has dramatically affected countless lives by making possible improved noninvasive diagnosis, online monitoring of critically ill patients, and rehabilitation and sensory aids for the handicapped. Rangaraj Rangayyan supplies a practical, hands-on field guide to this constantly evolving technology in Biomedical Signal Analysis, focusing on the diagnostic challenges that medical professionals continue to face. Dr. Rangayyan applies a problem-solving approach to his study. Each chapter begins with the statement of a different biomedical signal problem, followed by a selection of real-life case studies and the associated signals. Signal processing, modeling, or analysis techniques are then presented, starting with relatively simple "textbook" methods, followed by more sophisticated research approaches. The chapter concludes with one or more application solutions; illustrations of real-life biomedical signals and their derivatives are included throughout.
Among the topics addressed are:
- Concurrent, coupled, and correlated processes
- Filtering for removal of artifacts
- Event detection and characterization
- Frequency-domain characterization
- Modeling biomedical systems
- Analysis of nonstationary signals
- Pattern classification and diagnostic decision
The chapters also present a number of laboratory exercises, study questions, and problems to facilitate preparation for class examinations and practical applications. Biomedical Signal Analysis provides a definitive resource for upper-level under-graduate and graduate engineering students, as well as for practicing engineers, computer scientists, information technologists, medical physicists, and data processing specialists.
An authoritative assessment of the problems and applications of biomedical signals, rooted in practical case studies

Customer Reviews:
One of the best of the series.......2001-03-29
I found this book very helpful in forming a clinical picture in my mind for all those confusing biochemical diseases. I felt this was one of the best books of this series. It is good to use after reviewing the subject. This book is not sufficient on its own and should be used as an adjunct to a standard review book.
Better if used near to the test date.......2000-05-10
When I first read this book It was not very useful `cause everything was new for me, but when I re read it after I finish to read my biochemistry review, It was amazing, It helped me to order all the knowledgment that I had in a better form, in a perfect style to be prepared for the ECFMG questions. I recommend it to everybody who is preparing for the USMLE or ECFMG. And also highly recommended with the Lippincott Biochemistry review.
Book Description
This text uses a case-study approach to present core principles of biochemistry and molecular biology in the context of human disease. The thirty-three cases have been carefully chosen to cover key concepts and common diseases. Each chapter provides a specific patient report that includes relevant history, pertinent clinical laboratory data, physical findings, and subsequent diagnosis. This is followed by a comprehensive discussion of normal biochemical processes and reactions pertaining to the case, along with the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease. In this third edition of the book, a new co-editor has aided in the substantially revised and more targeted selection of cases. The whole volume is now clearly focused on intermediary metabolism and other topics central to biochemistry. There are new chapters on topics such as collagen structure, mitochondrial metabolism, and hyperhomocysteinemia and vascular disease. There is also more coverage of nutritional biochemistry, including new chapters on protein-calorie malnutrition, obesity, vitamin A deficiency, and iron metabolism. The best cases were retained from the previous edition, and have been completely rewritten and updated to include recent advances in diagnostic biochemistry and the status of current therapies. Although the first edition was intended primarily for medical students, through the years the book has proven useful for a wide variety of students interested in the health science professions.

Nice book.......2006-12-03
Its a nice book and comprehesive it guides you and puts your feet more on the ground because all molecular thigns you learn has a clinical implication. i like the book even thought it only has less than 4 images and poor explications of cases, so read it with an internal medicine book for anythings to clarify
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Great and truly helpful but not for everyone.......2006-05-23
I have a hard time learning certain subjects quickly because I have to have a picture in my head for quick recall. This book made that a whole lot easier in studying biochem. I wish that I would have bought the series earlier. Granted, there could be more pictures and more content in the book but there's space to add your own pictures and study notes. Maybe future editions will have more content. If you are not the type of person that needs pictures then this book is probably not going to be as helpful. Otherwise, its actually a great study aid.

Customer Reviews:
Useful USMLE Prep.......2007-02-21
This book has been helpful in my USMLE preparation due to the case-based format, high yield emphasis, and the anatomical pearls. However, this book was poorly edited -- there are numerous errors in the text, mislabelled diagrams, etc. If you plan to use this book, have an anatomy atlas at your side, so that you can have a second source for accuracy.
Excellent anatomy review.......2005-07-02
This is a succinct, carefully chosen set of cases and accompanying pearls, questions, and illustrations. At a time when medical schools are cutting back on hours of anatomic instruction, a source like this will be of value to medical students and residents alike. Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
An excellent case study book in biochemistry.......2000-07-12
This is the best, readable and interesting book on biochemistry that I had ever read.As a case study book its aims to link modern biochemistry development with the biochemistry concepts presently taught to university level student. It is interesting and readable since many examples comes from actual medical cases. The questions setted after the each case aim to encourage students to recall existing knowledge, present new information and test comprehension and application of both. The questions are wide-ranging and are presented in a variety of ways to enable many different skills to be used. The only weekpoint is that only about half of the case study has answer, I hope the publisher can include all the answer in the coming new edition. At last I strongly recommend this book to biochemistry student, you may lovely enjoy this book.
