Herbs are grouped in chapters by function, with expanded summaries and tables for contrast and comparison. Each herb is identified by its pharmaceutical, pinyin, botanical, and family names, as well as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and English common names.

Key characteristics are provided at the beginning of each entry, along with dosage, properties, channels entered, and relevant cautions and contraindications. This provides a quick overview of essential information.

Actions and indications are integrated with important combinations that illustrate the range of an herb's functions, with references to appropriate formulas. This presents a more three-dimensional picture of how each herb is actually used.

Expanded commentary offers in-depth analysis and places each herb in its clinical context through rich historical references. The mechanisms of action underlying important combinations, and comparisons with similar herbs, provide a broader context for understanding how the herb can be used with optimal effect.

A section devoted to nomenclature and preparation describes the most important methods of processing and preparing each herb, and the advantages of each method. It also provides information about other commonly-used names and historical background.

Safety is an important focus of this edition, with an emphasis on proper herb identification. Issues concerning standardized products, desirable qualities, variants, and adulterants are explained for each herb. There is also extensive information on toxicity, as well as chemical constituents.

The utility of this book is enhanced by its wide range of appendices, among which are color photographs comparing the standard and adulterant forms of over 20 common herbs; tables of herbs that are indicated for specific pathologies of the five yin organs; and extensive cross references of the herbs by taxonomy, pinyin, pharmaceutical name, and other East Asian languages. There are also comprehensive indices of both herbs and formulas, as well as a general index.

Well, what can you say about this book? This is a hefty, giant book, and could certainly induce some kind of cerbral damage if dropped out of a third story window. :) No, in all seriousness, this is a great, concise book, and as the title of this review implies, it becomes more manageable after you get used to it. Used solely by itself, it will probably not help the student of Chinese herbology to ace any exams, but used in accordance with other study techniques, it will furter deepen and reinforce the studying of the herbs.

This book is really helpful. It covers a wide range of forensics pathology topics and provides rich and detailed information on these topics. It can be used as a "forensics pathology for dummies" book as well as a reference book for confirmed pathologists.
And last but not least, it is full of very good color pictures (forget the usual black and white pics which provide poor information, color pictures are so realistic and so much better!), and generally speaking its look and feels are very pleasant.

It is just unbelieveable.The collection of photographs is the best that i have come across. I have several forensic pathology books in my collection and this book has the best collection of real life photographs. The authours have stressed in almost all chapters of the limitations of the findings. This is admirable.Training as a forensic physician and a lawyer, this book is of great help.

Challenging Questions For MT Students.......2007-01-03

This is the most difficult review book that I've come across. It contains harder questions than the ACSP Bor review book, NCA review book and the Prentice Hall Q and A review book. If you like challenging questions, then this book is for you. If you just want the basics and normal questions, then go with the other books. It has the explainations along side the questions on the very same page which is nice. Not really for students studying for the MLT exam but more toward MT level exam material. The new 3rd edition comes with new CD software with quizes and photographs which I found to be very nice.

Comprehensive review.......2005-09-20

I found this book to be a very good review for the med tech exam. There were even a few topics that weren't covered in class. The key to making this book work is to start early and do a set number of questions per day. I liked the fact that they had explainations for each answer, because then you could figure out why you got a question wrong. I passed the MT(ASCP) exam with a high score, and I feel that this book definately contributed to my success.

You enter as a novice with human explanations of terms, proceed through most of the mundate and requisite statistics, and then are allowed to explode through the fascination that is aerosols. Through comprehensive, yet comprehensable language, this is the first and only way to understand what has previously been an elusive and disperse knowledge. How is the aerosol from hair spray related to a carbonated drink or a sponge? It all has to do with what is finely dispersed and what medium suspends this dispersion. With these provoking thoughts, William C. Hinds leads us into the partculars of suspended particles: aerosols. Dr. Hinds has accomplished an amazing feat here. Understanding this complicated field requires familiarity with at least one year of college calculus. With an eloquent writing style laced with differentials and derivations, he describes the various phenomena of aerosols, including particle settling speed, respirability, light scattering, dust explosions, and much more. His description of aerosol measurement techniques is interesting and detailed. (You would be surprised at how complicated are the physics of filtration!) What is truly special, however, is his ability to effectively describe in words what the equations are saying. You can grasp a feel for the phenomena described even if some of the differentials leave you stumped. With problems (and their answers--NOT solutions!) at the end of each chapter, this is an ideal text for graduate students in public health, engineering, industrial hygiene, or toxicology. This book has great content and was used in my fourth year of medical technology studies. However, it gets a two star rating because after about two weeks of solid use the binding falls apart and pages come unglued from the seam and fall out.

This text book has a little of everything. A great book to keep on your desk when you need a brief overview of something in the lab. It's sort of like all of your college sophmore math/chem/biology texts condensed into one book.

A really great companion........2004-07-03

It would had been great to have this textbook with me while in my school years. It is always a delight to consult Kaplan's text, since it covers most of the lab issues with enough depth. The illustrations are not colored, but they are still pedagogic. Also, the text is enriched with lots of tables that I have found really useful. Besides this new edition is accompanied with a CD (which to be honest I haven't explore deeply). My opinion is that of a professional which has had to reference by work demands, I'm no student, but as I said before this would have made a great companion.

I bought this book when i was reviewing for my Medical Technology certification exam. The book is more difficult than the certification exam. But the beauty of this book is that it will make you understand the rationale and principles behind all the laboratory tests and procedures. If you can pass at least 60% of the questions in this book. You have a good chance of passing the certification exam.

I highly recommend this book! I bought several other review books such as Concise Review, and this book has more detail than any of the others. It has 1000's of questions, but what is most helpful is the DETAILED description of the answers. They were so thorough that by diligently studying and outlining their answers you will learn a tremendous amount.

A clearly, yet thoroughly physical point of view constitutes the framework of this book. Written by pioneers in the field of protein physics, the book amazingly guides the readers to "think" of protein and raises fundamental questions in the field of soft-condensed matter physics. A must for everyone who wants to have a correct and scientific vision of proteins.

This is a magnificent book, remarkable for its breadth, depth, and accessibility.

Elegant discussions of background material including topics in quantum chemistry
and thermodynamics render this book a self-contained tutorial on the many-faceted problems of
protein physics. Because of its structure as a series of increasingly sophisticated lectures, it should be accessible to a wide variety of audiences with diverse backgrounds.

To top it off, the text is beautifully written, at points nearly poetic including even a Greek chorus, a pleasure to read and to study. I am reminded of a few other great lecture series in science where razor-sharp intellects explain complicated phenomena from soup to nuts with wisdom and wit.

Anyone from professional scientist to motivated novice in almost any analytic discipline should find this a valuable introduction and detailed study of protein physics.

Ptitsyn's 'Protein Physics': a book of worth........2002-11-10

A book of worth from the legendary institution, PhysTech (Moscow). Ptitsyn's 'Protein Physics' is a valuable source of information on folding thermodynamics and kinetics both to beginners and professionals in this (and related) fields. No more words. Strongly recommended!

By far the best book on this subject.......2002-10-08

Excellent book for both beginners and experts. I will recommend it to students as a source of initial knowledge not only on proteins, but also on biopolymers and biophysics in general. For instance, presentation of forces is superb. I am also positive that every expert will find new non trivial insights on great many subtle points of this difficult topic.
