The Safety Standard. Period........2004-07-03
Thirty years ago I met the predecessor to this volume. Sounds like a long time? I have made it those 30 years because of what I learned from this book.
If you are a chemistry student (I was a freshman when I encountered this book) then you need to read this book before you start working with your reagents.
If you are employed in a field where you work in a laboratory or come into contact with laboratory materials (albeit - it is aimed at chemical labs and not specifically at bioscience labs) then you need to read about the materials you could be exposed to, BEFORE you are exposed.
If you are a medical professional - then you already have one.
If you are a legal professional and you deal with toxic torts: you need one.
Concise, clear and accessible by any high school grad. If you work with chemicals - you need this book.

Customer Reviews:
Great for 1st year Nursing students.......2005-10-12
Complete diagnostic test, especially CBC. Plus, good study guide because it lists what is normal for male, female, child and adults
amazing.......2004-04-19
this book is a nursing students MUST! Its organized, its very clear, and its accurate. This book will help you through your first year of clinicals and some!
A must for every nurse's professional library.......2000-04-18
Every nurse and nursing student should have a copy of this reference. Laboratory and diagnostic tests are presented in separate sections, with material in each listed in alphabetical order. Each entry gives reference values (normal ranges or findings for adults and children); description of the element being tested and consequences of deviations from normal range; purposes of the test; potential clinical problems related to deviations, including drugs that may influence values; procedures for specimen collection and/or preparation for the test; related nursing diagnoses; and detailed nursing implications. In an era of rapidly increasing breadth of laboratory and diagnostic tests and related responsibilities of nurses, the nurse's role has become critical for optimum efficacy of such tests. This edition is compact yet concise, a quick reference that does not sacrifice thorough coverage of information, and the spiral binding enhances ease of use. I have had a copy of each edition since the initial publication, and I consider it to be one of the few references that I can't live without.

Technical and very complete.......2002-05-22
I waited quite some time in anticipation of this book. In fact, shipping was delayed by nearly a month. I am reluctant to admit it, but I found it terribly technical. That is the reason I am writing this review. It is quite thorough but more than I expected or needed. Additionally, I was so glad to finally receive it that I mindlessly wrote my name on it without thinking about returning it for something more suitable to my needs. I just hope that someone else can avoid my mistake by reading this review.
A great desk reference!.......2002-03-11
This is an outstanding reference book. A "must" for physicians, laboratory technicians, and other health professionals interested in the clinical pathology. This is laid out in a very easy to use format, with cross indexing, and with current references. The best book of its kind on the market.
A Great Reference Tool.......2000-06-05
I was very fortunate to have access to this book as a Medical Technology student and afterwards while working in a laboratory. This book is very well cross-referenced with every conceivable alternate test name listed. A summary of the disease states that each test could help to diagnose is also listed, making this a great learning tool. Overall, I will consider this to be the most valuable laboratory reference book in my possession.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for Laboratory and Diagnostic Test References.......1999-08-07
The book provides an excellent source of information regarding laboratory and diagnostic testing. The book also provides nursing considerations and interventions in an easy-to-read format for quick and easy reference of informative material. I would highly recommend this book to any practicing nurse or nursing student.

Customer Reviews:
Not as advertised... .......2006-10-31
This is NOT a general chemistry lab reference book. It IS a biochemistry reference book. If you need a lab reference for general chemistry you need to look for something else.
Lab Ref review.......2006-03-10
This book is a great aid for the bench. It enables you to quickly find recipes for reagents used often, without the hassle of digging through volumes of more advanced manuals, and also provides tips that may be unavailable in such advanced manuals. It's also handy for the lab amateur, providing information as basic as how to prepare 1M stock solutions, and goes as far as telling you how to aliquot and store reagents when necessary! I highly recommend this book, as I've made good use of it in the short time since I purchased it.
Book Description
Praise for The Laboratory Handbook by Gary S. Coyne
"This is probably the most useful volume I have encountered for many years and should be made compulsory reading for all those involved in research, particularly new research students."
-Chromatographia
"The book will be valuable for readers needing to understand the theory and proper use, cleaning, and storing methods of laboratory equipment. Safety issues are thoroughly covered. The book is a useful 'how-to-use' reference for students, novices, and experienced laboratory personnel."
-JACS
An updated version of the critically acclaimed Laboratory Handbook, this guide to laboratory materials, equipment, and techniques is an important resource for students as well as veteran scientists and lab technicians.
From vacuum technology and glass vacuum systems to volumetric glassware, gas-oxygen torches, and cryogenic tanks, The Laboratory Companion provides complete coverage of all commonly used lab equipment, including essential information about its selection, use, cleaning, and maintenance. It clearly explains the historical development and rationale behind how and why things are done in the lab, and includes helpful guidelines and step-by-step procedures for each topic discussed.
Since glassware is typically the most prevalent type of lab equipment, much of the book is devoted to the properties and handling of glass apparatus, with additional material on rubber and plastic tubing, corks, stoppers, and O-rings. Readers will also find broad coverage of measurement systems, high- and low-temperature apparatus and techniques, compressed gases, vacuum systems, and other essential subjects.
Customer Reviews:
Highly reccommend to anyone using lab equipment.......2007-04-30
Mr. Coyne's experience and reseach shines through in the text. He includes excellent reference materials, charts and tables guide you on many practical lab activities, from simple, such as how to insert tubing into rubber stoppers, to complex, as in operating vacumn devices. In view of the excellent job he did in this book, I have requested that he consider writing a second in a series addressing how, why and when to use specific or unusual glassware, such as Graham, Allihn, and the various kinds of condensers, drying tubes, separatory funnels and the many other types of specialized glassware there seems to be little published about.
clinical laboratories methods.......2000-06-03
i want to review the some clinical laboratories methods ;as serology, parasitology ....andhematology.
Most useful book in the lab!.......1998-03-08
The usefulness of this text rivals the CRC Handbook. It has a good balance of readable text and reference material, and everything is well arranged and easy to find. It's well worth Amazon's asking price (which is what I paid at the college bookstore).
An essential handbook for Chemistry labs........1997-11-05
Coyne's book shares a wealth of information regarding laboratory equipment such as standard glassware, volumetrics, vacuum greases and oils. It also manages to cover fundamental basic vacuum and air sensitive techniques in terms that don't require a Phd. I highly recommend this book to Chemistry technicians , graduate students and scientists as a reference guide to safe procedures and materials.
