Great Environmental Chem Text.......2000-06-20

I took a web-based environmental chem course, and this book was used in lieu of lectures. The author does an outstanding job of presentation and the text is very well-organized. Includes a lot of current information. The problems within the text are very challenging and reflect real world issues (i.e., PCB concentrations in the Great Lakes) My only criticism is that the chapters are sometimes overly long. Other than that, this is one of the best E-chem texts I've come up against, and I certainly learned more from it than I would have from listening to a prof lecturing for a term. Recommended highly!

Good presentation of a broad topic........1999-01-07

I am also a chemistry student and I found the book to be rather easy, but that is because the text is very clearly written with good presentation and concise wording. It is certainly a good place to start in trying to understand an environmental problem, especially if the readers background in chemistry is only on a general and limited organic level.

Informative, easy to understand.......1998-08-24

Environmetal chemistry is a very helpful book for studensts in environmental chemistry studies. But as a pure chemistry student i find some parts of the book too easy, even boring at times, specially the chapters on organic environmental chemistry.On the other hand the chapters on physical environmental chemistry are very good and contain challenging problems.

Useful but read the fine print.......2007-06-10

This reference is highly useful for consulting work. It has its limits. A true rule-of-thumb book for chemical engineers would require volumes so I would say the author did well, hence the 5 stars. A good example of the limits of this book are what he does with knock-out pots. He limits his presentation to reflux drums instead of expanding his study to KO pots in general. The section on reflux drums is difficult to use because the tables presented for liquid holding times is difficult to understand, let alone use. The reader would be tempted to use this method for KO pots unless he sees the fine print in the corner of the page. Look for these caveates.

The index is good, which is critical for such a reference. If I had a choice between buying Hicks or Branan, it would be a hard choice. I would probably advise the cheaper book, Branan. Besides, Hicks, "Standard Handbook of Engineering Calculations," covers a broad range of engineering calculations. Branan is more focused on chemical engineering. It is unfortunate that it is not expanded to cover more of the field.

Question about Units used (US and Metric?).......2006-09-19

Hi

I do not have a copy of the current edition, but a year ago I investigated purchasing a previous edition. What deterred me at the time was that all tips, tricks and equations etc. were in US units and thus only of very limited appeal to the Metric world.

A question to a reviewer of the 4th edition - has the book become "international", i.e. quoting metric and US units? If not, it shall remain of limited desirability in the free world.

From an Industrial Practitioner - This is an Excellent Quick Reference.......2006-07-11

This book is an excellent and priceless reference on Process Equipment Fundamentals and Quick Calculations for any engineer or practitioner working in the process industries. I am an Electronic Engineer, but I have been working for the last 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation and Process Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry. As a result I have been involved with Chemical Engineering issues in a day to day basic.

I have found this book to be an excellent tool aid to analyze operational problems that affect process performance.

Chemical engineers working in operations and design for the process industries will find this book most useful.

A MUST HAVE books for Chemical Engineers.......2000-10-08

This is one of the few MUST HAVE books for Chemical Engineers doing process engineering. When I travel (for work) I always take "Transport Phenomena" (aka BSL), The GPA Databook and "Rules of Thumb for Chemical Engineers". Rules of Thumb... is a great reference for process design and trouble shooting field problems.

A Practical Tip: The best thing to do with "Rules of Thumb for Chemical Engineers" is to carefuly remove the binding and put it into a 3-hole notebook (e.g., the GPA databook) and then file all the classic process design articles with the appropriate chapters.

Outstanding compilation.......2000-06-08

This is a 400+ page perfect-bound book, 8-1/2 x 11 inch formt, packed with tips and short cuts for practicing chemical engineers. Branan has essentially scoured the popular press (e.g, Chemical Engineering Magazine, Hydrocarbon Processing, etc.) for articles and data. He's captured that data and organized it into his volume. In so doing, he omits most of the explanatory text and derivations. Instead, he prints the actual data, formulas, recommendations, and definitions (and, of course, references to the source material). This makes for a highly accessible book with tremendous practical value.

There are four main sections: 1) equipment design, 2) process design, 3) plant design, and 4) operations.

For example, one of the chapters within plant design is called "Safety." It contains the following parts: - Estimating LEL and Flash (provides method for estimating LEL given the stoichiometry of combustion and a vapor pressure curve) - Tank Blanketing (method for determining inert gas requirements for breathing losses and working losses; includes data maps of the US) - Equipment Purging (for dilution, pressure-cycle, and vacuum-cycle purging) - Static Charge from Fluid Flow (reprint of an article from Hydrocarbon Processing) - Mixture Flammability (method and examples for estimating) - Relief Manifolds (describes method adopted by API)

You enter as a novice with human explanations of terms, proceed through most of the mundate and requisite statistics, and then are allowed to explode through the fascination that is aerosols. Through comprehensive, yet comprehensable language, this is the first and only way to understand what has previously been an elusive and disperse knowledge. How is the aerosol from hair spray related to a carbonated drink or a sponge? It all has to do with what is finely dispersed and what medium suspends this dispersion. With these provoking thoughts, William C. Hinds leads us into the partculars of suspended particles: aerosols. Dr. Hinds has accomplished an amazing feat here. Understanding this complicated field requires familiarity with at least one year of college calculus. With an eloquent writing style laced with differentials and derivations, he describes the various phenomena of aerosols, including particle settling speed, respirability, light scattering, dust explosions, and much more. His description of aerosol measurement techniques is interesting and detailed. (You would be surprised at how complicated are the physics of filtration!) What is truly special, however, is his ability to effectively describe in words what the equations are saying. You can grasp a feel for the phenomena described even if some of the differentials leave you stumped. With problems (and their answers--NOT solutions!) at the end of each chapter, this is an ideal text for graduate students in public health, engineering, industrial hygiene, or toxicology. Potable water supplies that contain arsenic concentrations high enough to pose a human health hazard are a problem of international proportion. Surface water and ground water are both at risk of arsenic contamination. However, most incidences of high concentrations of arsenic have been reported for ground water, which is the subject of this book. The geochemistry of arsenic in aqueous environments is complex. This book consolidates much of what is known about the geochemistry of arsenic and provides new information on relationships between high concentrations of arsenic in ground water and geochemical environments. The subject matter of this book ranges in scope from molecular-scale geochemical processes that affect the mobility of arsenic in ground water, to arsenic contaminated ground water at the national scale. Chapters were contributed by an international group of research scientists from a broad range of backgrounds.
Information includes reviews of existing thermodynamic data for arsenic containing mineral phases and aqueous arsenic species, factors that affect adsorption of arsenic in common ground water environments, and spectroscopic techniques used to determine the chemical reactions controlling arsenic partitioning between solid and liquid phases at particle-water interfaces. A significant portion of this book is devoted to regions where high concentrations of arsenic in ground waters have a natural source. The original source of arsenic can vary; however, arsenic becomes concentrated in the solid and aqueous phases of an aquifer given appropriate geochemical conditions. Often, high arsenic concentrations in the solid phase become mobile if there is a change in ground water chemistry, either natural or anthropogenically induced. Research presented in this book covers several different geologic settings and provides explanations of the geochemical processes that have caused the arsenic concentrations observed in ground water. In situ remediation of arsenic-contaminated ground water can provide a relatively inexpensive alternative to above ground treatment. If you are a beginner to Process Control, you may also want to consider "Process Dynamics, Modeling, and Control (Topics in Chemical Engineering)" by Babatunde A. Ogunnaike, which is an excelent introductory reference to Chemical Processes Dynamics and Control.

The first edition was published in 1969, the second edition was released in 1982 (Volume 1) and 1985 (Volume 2). This latest edition comprises over 3000 pages between the 2 volumes. Each volume includes 8 chapters with many sub-headings per chapter.

The Flow Measurement (29 sub-headins) and Analytical Instrumentation (60 sub-headings) chapters were heavily revised for the 1995 edition of VOLUME 1. PLC's & Other Logic Devices (10 subheadings), DCS & Computer-based Systems (16 sub-headings) and Process Control Systems (27 sub-headings) were largely rewritten for the 1995 edition of VOLUME 2. Within each product-oriented sub-heading (eg. Stumm and Morgan remains the best aquatic chemical book ever written.

It is fundamental in its approach to the processes that control the composition of natural waters, it is a pleasure to read and should be a must for any student and/or professional in the field.

After more than 20 years working in the field I still find it useful and up to date in many respects.

A pitty that there is no Spanish version of it, thousands of Spanish speaking chemists and geochemists are missing a classic.

Reference Yes, Teaching Text, No.......2000-11-02

This book is an excellent reference text for people who already know something about aquatic chemistry. It contains more material and covers more topics than any other book in the field. As a teaching text, however, it is severely lacking.

The first problem is the often convoluted writing, which lapses at times into incomprehensibility; read this book for 5 minutes and you will find at least one confusing sentence or circular explanation. The second problem is the lack of clarity about how to actually solve equlibrium problems: there are lots of examples of tableaus used to solve problems, but the explanation of how the tableau is constructed is not good, and neither is the description of how to obtain the proton condition or what it is (and it is crucial to understand this). Finally, many so-called "examples" do very little to help clarify things. Readers who find the tableau method confusing as introduced by Stumm and Morgan will find themselves consulting the aquatic chemistry text by Morel (or the later edition by Hering and Morel) to learn how to actually use the method. When they do, they will probably find that text highly preferable: clearly written, with all the examples worked out from start to finish.

These problems really make learning from this text a monumental struggle for students not already versed in the subject. However, as previously noted, as a reference for professionals, it is unequaled.

Excellent reference book for chem. & physics of nat. systems.......1998-09-26

This book is an excellent reference. It presents a thorough discussion of a complex topic. The authors provide many worked examples, with all required numeric inputs and resutls, that permit the reader to quickly verify his or her understanding of the material. The consistent and proper use of units throughout the book is refreshing.

Overall I would say this is a well written and useful text. I used this text for a Graduate Level Civil Engineering class while working on my Masters. This is a good introductory text for understanding the basic concepts of advective and fickian transport of contaminants of concern. The concepts presented can be applied to pretty much any chemical. The text covers basic concepts, chemical distribution of phases, mechanisms responsible for physical transport, air-water exchange modeling, Redox reactions, dissolved oxygen modeling,determining partitioning coefficients among phases, transport within the subsurface enviornmental and processess within the atmosphere. I found that the section on Bio Accumlation Factor (BAF), Bio Concentration Factor (BCF), and determining the increasing concentration within each trophic level within the food chain of the system to be weak. Each chapter within the text is full of problem sets but there is no solution guide which would be helpful. I would recommend this text, however, I would also supplement certain sections with additional reading as required.

While there is no doubt that the author is highly proficient in the subject matter the book was a difficult read. Terms and theories were explained clearly however this is not an introductory level chemistry book. This book is written for chemical or environmental engineering students. Illustrations and tables are also inserted at points where you are engrossed in some pretty heady material so it gave the impression of jumping around. I say this b/c illustrations and tables had a lot of information included. The formulas were high level mathematical computations that I found bewildering. I am not Einstein but I also have 10 years of in the trenches environmental chemistry and field management. There were excellent problems to work at the end of each chapter but the answers were not to be found in the book. I have no idea if I worked the problems correctly which defeats the point of working them in the first place. I would not recommend this book as a "beginner level" chemistry book. This is more appropriate for a graduate school level which may have been the intended audience. If you are looking for a book packed with theory and formulas then this is the book for you. I had expected a book that was a little more general in nature.

This is a reasonably priced textbook for advanced undergrad & grads studying the environmental sciences in Engineering, Hydrology, and Chemistry. Environmental consultants in the private sector could also employ this textbook as a reference. Harry Hemond (of MIT) and Liz Fechner-Levy (consultant in Bethesda, MD) deliver a quantitative treatment of processes. Battle-tested at MIT for many years, this volume features time-saving exercises at the end of each chapter and an accompanying solutions manual.
