Customer Reviews:
Great Environmental Chem Text.......2000-06-20
I took a web-based environmental chem course, and this book was used in lieu of lectures. The author does an outstanding job of presentation and the text is very well-organized. Includes a lot of current information. The problems within the text are very challenging and reflect real world issues (i.e., PCB concentrations in the Great Lakes) My only criticism is that the chapters are sometimes overly long. Other than that, this is one of the best E-chem texts I've come up against, and I certainly learned more from it than I would have from listening to a prof lecturing for a term. Recommended highly!
Good presentation of a broad topic........1999-01-07
I am also a chemistry student and I found the book to be rather easy, but that is because the text is very clearly written with good presentation and concise wording. It is certainly a good place to start in trying to understand an environmental problem, especially if the readers background in chemistry is only on a general and limited organic level.
Informative, easy to understand.......1998-08-24
Environmetal chemistry is a very helpful book for studensts in environmental chemistry studies. But as a pure chemistry student i find some parts of the book too easy, even boring at times, specially the chapters on organic environmental chemistry. On the other hand the chapters on physical environmental chemistry are very good and contain challenging problems.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent in covering thoroughly the chemical aspects of energy and environmental problems.......2006-11-24
I found the first edition of this book very useful for myself and my students as a reference and the second edition is even more useful. The book is excellent in covering thoroughly the chemical aspects of energy and environmental problems. The book is divided into four parts: Energy, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere/Lithosphere, Biosphere.
The authors discuss the advantages and disadvantages of petroleum, natural gas, coal and the ways of handling the emission of CO2. They include chapters on nuclear, renewable energy, and energy utilization.
I'm particularly impressed with the use of figures which show the many aspects of a system being discussed, with the different contributions from different sources happening at the same time. For instance what happens to the energy annually on earth, organic carbon changing to fossil fuels, energy storage in photosynthesis, maximum work, and systems efficiency, etc. These are great for understanding how many aspects there are to a process.
The section on the atmosphere has chapters that covers air pollution, ozone, climate changes, nitrogen and oxygen chemistry. The section on the hydrosphere covers water resources from a global perspective, properties of water, the importance of acids-bases, solubility, redox reactions, the chemistry of nitrogen and phosphorous. Water quality pollution and its treatment are covered in detail. The section on the biosphere covers toxic materials, the nitrogen cycle in food production use of fertilizers and insecticides.
Dimensional analysis is used extensively throughout and in assigned problems. For instance they calculate an estimate of the energy in a moderate rainstorm to be over a million tons of TNT. They actually show the calculations for other interesting problems such as the increase in energy used in the future with even a small 2.5% annual increase.
You won't find a better or more even-handed exposition of the natural cycles on the Earth emphasizing the importance of understanding the chemistry involved, and our options to keep us and the Earth healthy.
Comprehensive but accessible.......2002-03-18
Chemistry of the Environment is a great overview of the chemical processes of environmental change. There is a lot of in-depth discussion of air pollution and ozone depletion, as well as water pollution. The book covers virtually every topic in environmental sciences, even going into detail in some ares that are usually classified as environmental geology. The book is written clearly and is accessible for most people who have taken general chemistry courses. A background in organic chemistry would be helpful but is not necessary. This is one of those textbooks that I kept at the end of the semester, to have as a reference guide.

Book Description
Potable water supplies that contain arsenic concentrations high enough to pose a human health hazard are a problem of international proportion. Surface water and ground water are both at risk of arsenic contamination. However, most incidences of high concentrations of arsenic have been reported for ground water, which is the subject of this book. The geochemistry of arsenic in aqueous environments is complex. This book consolidates much of what is known about the geochemistry of arsenic and provides new information on relationships between high concentrations of arsenic in ground water and geochemical environments. The subject matter of this book ranges in scope from molecular-scale geochemical processes that affect the mobility of arsenic in ground water, to arsenic contaminated ground water at the national scale. Chapters were contributed by an international group of research scientists from a broad range of backgrounds.
Information includes reviews of existing thermodynamic data for arsenic containing mineral phases and aqueous arsenic species, factors that affect adsorption of arsenic in common ground water environments, and spectroscopic techniques used to determine the chemical reactions controlling arsenic partitioning between solid and liquid phases at particle-water interfaces. A significant portion of this book is devoted to regions where high concentrations of arsenic in ground waters have a natural source. The original source of arsenic can vary; however, arsenic becomes concentrated in the solid and aqueous phases of an aquifer given appropriate geochemical conditions. Often, high arsenic concentrations in the solid phase become mobile if there is a change in ground water chemistry, either natural or anthropogenically induced. Research presented in this book covers several different geologic settings and provides explanations of the geochemical processes that have caused the arsenic concentrations observed in ground water. In situ remediation of arsenic-contaminated ground water can provide a relatively inexpensive alternative to above ground treatment. One chapter of this book discusses natural remediation of an aquifer where naturally occurring arsenic was mobilized by leachate from a landfill. Two chapters discuss results from field experiments designed to alter aquifer geochemistry in order to remove arsenic from ground water prior to withdrawal.
This book will be of interest to scientists working in the field of arsenic, health professionals interested in arsenic exposure, and water-resource managers and regulators.

Customer Reviews:
Chemical Fate and Transport.......2005-01-09
Overall I would say this is a well written and useful text. I used this text for a Graduate Level Civil Engineering class while working on my Masters. This is a good introductory text for understanding the basic concepts of advective and fickian transport of contaminants of concern. The concepts presented can be applied to pretty much any chemical. The text covers basic concepts, chemical distribution of phases, mechanisms responsible for physical transport, air-water exchange modeling, Redox reactions, dissolved oxygen modeling, determining partitioning coefficients among phases, transport within the subsurface enviornmental and processess within the atmosphere. I found that the section on Bio Accumlation Factor (BAF), Bio Concentration Factor (BCF), and determining the increasing concentration within each trophic level within the food chain of the system to be weak. Each chapter within the text is full of problem sets but there is no solution guide which would be helpful. I would recommend this text, however, I would also supplement certain sections with additional reading as required.
Chemical Fate and Transport in the Environment.......2003-03-21
While there is no doubt that the author is highly proficient in the subject matter the book was a difficult read. Terms and theories were explained clearly however this is not an introductory level chemistry book. This book is written for chemical or environmental engineering students. Illustrations and tables are also inserted at points where you are engrossed in some pretty heady material so it gave the impression of jumping around. I say this b/c illustrations and tables had a lot of information included. The formulas were high level mathematical computations that I found bewildering. I am not Einstein but I also have 10 years of in the trenches environmental chemistry and field management. There were excellent problems to work at the end of each chapter but the answers were not to be found in the book. I have no idea if I worked the problems correctly which defeats the point of working them in the first place. I would not recommend this book as a "beginner level" chemistry book. This is more appropriate for a graduate school level which may have been the intended audience. If you are looking for a book packed with theory and formulas then this is the book for you. I had expected a book that was a little more general in nature.
The Price is Right!.......2000-04-01
This is a reasonably priced textbook for advanced undergrad & grads studying the environmental sciences in Engineering, Hydrology, and Chemistry. Environmental consultants in the private sector could also employ this textbook as a reference. Harry Hemond (of MIT) and Liz Fechner-Levy (consultant in Bethesda, MD) deliver a quantitative treatment of processes. Battle-tested at MIT for many years, this volume features time-saving exercises at the end of each chapter and an accompanying solutions manual.

Book Description
An examination of both theoretical and practical approaches to the geochemistry of natural waters with a more tightly focused emphasis on fresh-water environments. The third edition focuses more on environmental issues than the previous edition, reflecting the importance on environmental geochemistry as a result of increased environmental awareness and regulatory requirements. Prepares readers to interpret the probable cause of a particular water composition and to predict the probable water chemistry in those situations where data do not exist.
Customer Reviews:
Geochemistry of Natural Waters.......2004-06-17
I had used this text book for a graduate class in Chemical Hydrogeology while doing my Masters. I found this to be a very poor text to use. The textbook presents a very qaulitative approach to geochemistry of natural waters and does not lend itself to quanititative problem solving. I purchased other texts on ths subject so that I could cross-reference and determine how to setup problems for equilibrium chemistry. I would not recommend use of this text.
Needs Work.......2001-11-09
This book does not lend itself to an introductory class in geochemistry for the graduate student. The material does not present comprehensive derivations of calculations, but relies on prior knowledge and assumption not generally available,or known by the graduate student first being introduced to Geochemistry. The majority of the book is normally only comprehensable to the student after the material has been described by persons knowledgable in the subject mater. In other word this book is worthless to read prior to the lecture on the subject mater. Furthermore, the appendices are full of errors and contradictions to other references, and the book has numerous typos and difficult language constructs that make the text incomprehensible at times. I hope there is a better book for the introductory graduate class in geochemistry out there, because this book does not cut it.
Valuable Reference for Aqueous Geochemistry Concepts.......2001-01-18
Drever's has long been a valuable reference in my own work and in the classes I teach. It is one of several references I use for understanding geochemical processes. The first sentence of the preface states that the text is intended for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses. I first used this text when I took Aqueous Geochem in grad school and it really made a difference in understanding applications. Spend an hour with Stumm and Morgan and then look at Drever. You'll almost see the lightbulb go on over your head. The example calculations are great and the addition of the geochemical models enhance the applicability of the text.
However, I would note that if you need to start with introductory chemical concepts this isn't the book for you.
If you are weak in chemistry start elsewhere.
Still... two thumbs up from this reviewer.
Esencial para los geologos.......2000-10-18
Libro muy sencillo de leer y sus ejemplos son muy didacticos

This book fails to explain topics in a manner suitable for beginners in this field. I recomend choosing any other book over this one.
