Book Description
Take Your First Step Toward True Evolution Ever wonder why you repeat the same negative thoughts in your head? Why you keep coming back for more from hurtful family members, friends, or significant others? Why you keep falling into the same detrimental habits or limiting attitudeseven when you know that they are going to make you feel bad? Dr. Joe Dispenza has spent decades studying the human mindhow it works, how it stores information, and why it perpetuates the same behavioral patterns over and over. In the acclaimed film What the Bleep Do We Know!? he began to explain how the brain evolvesby learning new skills, developing the ability to concentrate in the midst of chaos, and even healing the body and the psyche. Evolve Your Brain presents this information in depth, while helping you take control of your mind, explaining how thoughts can create chemical reactions that keep you addicted to patterns and feelingsincluding ones that make you unhappy. And when you know how these bad habits are created, it's possible to not only break these patterns, but also reprogram and evolve your brain, so that new, positive, and beneficial habits can take over. This is something you can start to do right now. You and only you have the power to change your mind and evolve your brain for a better lifefor good.

A life changing book.......2007-10-09
There are many self development books in the market, but few explains how self development takes place on biological level. In Evlove Your Brain Dr. Dizpenza shows the reader in very detail how it is done - how thoughts and emotions influence human body and how body influences mind. You will discover many things about yourself that you haven't been awared of.
Evolve Your Brain: The Science of Changing Your Mind.......2007-10-09
It was an honor and privilege to meet Dr. Joe and experience his presentation at Breakthroughs III with Jeffery Combs this past weekend. I

I love your book and the photos and details are spectacular. You and Bruce Lipton would make a great team for work on epigenetics. I don't see many references to the role of the cell membrane.
But really great work! I commend you. Looking forward to your next one!

Amazing.......2007-09-02
This is one of the best books I have ever read. It goes very deep into detail of how the brain actually works, and does it with passion and energy. I am learning so much about how my brain works and Dr. Dispenza presents the information with simplicty and compassion for those us of who are not physicians. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be solely responsible for changing their life.

Customer Reviews:
A fun, creative toy for the person who has everything.......2007-10-01
This is just a fun, creative toy. It starts as a ball and comes apart into mini "pyramid-like" pieces. From here, you can use your imagination and create new objects (animals, stars, etc.). It also has a strangely soothing feel when you are putting it back together.
The only drawback is that the magnets could be a little stronger. Sometimes it is hard to get your new creations to stay together because they slip. However, overall this is a really cool toy. Good for kids and adults.
Disappointing.......2007-09-12
I'm sorry. I just find this product to be boring and, to be frank, juvenile.
Great for your coffee table.......2007-05-07
When I was a kid my family always had a game or puzzle on the coffee table to twiddle with when watching TV. Even though in this TiVo world we watch commercials less, the Ball of Whacks still gets picked up and played with while the TV is on.
This is a timeless toy that can be split and combined in a zillion ways. Not quite the rubik's cube of the 00's, but fun for kids and adults.
Not as good as expected.......2007-04-05
I was excited to get this based on the reviews, but I found the toy more inhibitive than expected. The odd shape of the blocks combined with the limited amount only allow a couple different arrangements, all tending more or less toward a ball-like design. Things like the "frog" in the picture are about the most you can spread it out, but it will be too fragile to touch at that point. I felt like this could have been cool, but the pieces just aren't as flexible as I would like (such as Legos). This was not worth the money to me.
Neat at first.......2007-03-31
This was fun to play with. The magnets aren't as strong as Geomag or Supermag toys, and as a result interesting arrangements can't keep their shape. However, the shape of each piece is clever and you can make many arrangements with it. After a few weeks though I got bored with the Ball of Whacks and gave it away.
Book Description
illustrated with 12-page color photo insert and line art throughout
A revised and expanded edition of the classic drawing-instruction book that has sold more than 2,500,000 copies.
When Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain was first published in 1979, it hit the New York Times bestseller list within two weeks and stayed there for more than a year. In 1989, when Dr. Betty Edwards revised the book, it went straight to the Times list again. Now Dr. Edwards celebrates the twentieth anniversary of her classic book with a second revised edition.
Over the last decade, Dr. Edwards has refined her material through teaching hundreds of workshops and seminars. Truly The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, this edition includes:
* the very latest developments in brain research;
* new material on using drawing techniques in the corporate world and in education;
* instruction on self-expression through drawing;
* an updated section on using color; and
* detailed information on using the five basic skills of drawing for problem solving.
Translated into thirteen languages, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is the world's most widely used drawing-instruction guide. People from just about every walk of life--artists, students, corporate executives, architects, real estate agents, designers, engineers--have applied its revolutionary approach to problem solving. The Los Angeles Times said it best: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is "not only a book about drawing, it is a book about living. This brilliant approach to the teaching of drawing . . . should not be dismissed as a mere text. It emancipates."
Customer Reviews:
Learning to Draw Starts Here.......2007-09-21
Whatever eventual outcome of research into right-left brain functions may be, the fact will remain that drawing is a facility that stems from the spacial relationships that the human brain perceives in the same way that reading is a facility that stems from the abstractions that the human brain makes.
Meanwhile, Edwards uses the right-versus-left theory as a touchstone to good effect in her attempt to instruct the artistic way of seeing to those living in a culture that defines cognition almost wholly in linguistic and mathematical terms.
It is a sad commentary on the state of our education system in the United States -- and indeed, on our whole idea of that which education consists -- that students are not introduced to these techniques in primary school, and well-versed in them by the end of secondary school.
Home schoolers, take note.
The results obtained by students of any age will be a revelation -- not to mention a satisfaction -- to those who take the time to work through Edwards' exercises. The road to becoming an artist -- or perhaps more specifically a draughtsman in the classical tradition -- starts here, with the ability to realistically draw shapes as seen, with a basic grasp of shading and perspective, and with the capacity to draw recognizable portraits from life.
But as others have pointed out, the road does not end here. Far from it.
For an introduction to the would-be artist's road ahead, after instruction along the lines of Edwards' -- with an invaluable discussion of line-drawing versus mass drawing, in light of which, an excellent exercise for the transition from pencils to paint is presented -- check out Harold Speed's classic The Practice and Science of Drawing. For surveys of artistic anatomy and its importance to the primary artistic skill of figure drawing (along with much else), check out Robert Beverly Hale's Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters: 100 Great Drawings Analyzed, Figure Drawing Fundamentals Defined and Master Class in Figure Drawing.
As Hale points out, gaining the skills that the masters had -- of drawing realistic human and animal likenesses, from memory, in accurate perspectives and within compelling compositons -- will take practice, practice and more practice. Around 2000 drawings would represent a good start -- without taking a whole other aspect of art into account at all, namely color.
No small task indeed, but rather, the training required of a profession. (And one for which, according to commentary on a DVD I heard recently, Hollywood, of all places, is crying out.)
For anyone and everyone.......2007-09-14
The original "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" was my text book for high school art class. I've gone through the whole book twice and since used it in teaching others to draw. It is an excellent book for all levels of skill, if you feel that you can't draw or if you have natural talent. The step-by-step instruction and exercises are clear and well researched. This book has been tested and used, and it theories and methods are sound.
Oppinion.......2007-09-12
A good reference book whitch will take a long time to study and achieve my goals
Great book.......2007-09-05
This book is really great. I always thought drawing was pure innate talent,
and that I could never draw faces, but I started reading, practising, and I already feel some improvement.
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.......2007-09-02
This is a very helpful book. The concept of focusing on negative spaces is especially useful. I learned facts about positioning of facial features that I never would have discovered on my own. With the book's help, I produced drawings far better than I imagined I could.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste...........2007-08-11
So buy this book and make the most use of it!
Just think of this book as kind of martial arts program for your brain. Each chapter (and there's 22 in all) stands out on its own and discusses a particular area you can improve on, such as memory, creativity, math, communication, and so on. It's an easy read and since each chapter stands out by itself, you can jump around and go to the areas that interest you the most. A great book with a lot of clever and PRACTICAL ideas, I give it 5 stars easy. Also liked The Sixty-Second Motivator to improve one's motivation.
Pretty good.......2007-05-22
The book is filled with plenty of hacks, although some of them were somewhat useless and uninteresting to me.
The memory hacks are pretty decent, but they don't go into enough detail on how to actually learn to use them. If you figure them out they work incredibly well, though. Some of the fast-math hacks were pretty helpful as well. One of my tops, however, was the hack that shows you how to calculate the weekday of any given day.
Good buy, good as a reference book just to learn something new if you ever need to.
just not that impressed.......2007-03-30
I bought this book sort of on a whim, hoping it might be a real gem. I've read some of the Hacks but not all of them. To me, they seem to skirt around the edges of usefulness, implementability, and impact. The strongest points seem like things I've heard elsewhere. I'm going to go back to the book based on all the positive reviews here, but I'm skeptical.
Just what I was looking for. .......2007-01-14
Focus on getting your mind expanding/growing. A great and highly useful set of tools, perspectives on maximizing your mental abilties. Wonderfully written, precise, Although I have been a software developer for 27 years, the Perls scripts are not essential for the non-developer type. Great for those of us heading into the 60+ years bracket. Got to be worth the bucks. Lots of great hacks. Buy it.
OK but not full of new things.......2007-01-08
It was OK and mostly worth the money but it was not full of new things for me. The hype on this book made me expect more out of this than I received.

Awesome Find!.......2007-09-14
On first view (size and inside design) I was not impressed!
I took a few minutes to review the pages and I was sold! I took the book home and dove right into the exercises that span 6 types of activities! My son, who wants to be a designer @ 16, completed some of the projects until midnight!
I love this book, the breakdown of the projects in the back and the interviews inspire even rookie designers and reignite the fire of the design practitioner. It is a breakdown of the the elements of creativity, including writing projects, design, writing, and problem solving!
Enjoy!
This great book to kick-start creative mind........2007-07-11
I love this book it was full of great ideas, althought some of ideas were recycled a couple of times. This is great book for anyone creative field or whom is serious about creative hobby.
The Copywriters and the Designers are Happy.......2007-06-14
Some of the creative exercise books out there are kind of....well, lame. This one isn't. It's got its share of silliness, but the exercises in this book really get the right-brain working. For most, you don't need anything more than pen, paper, and imagination. A handful of the exercises call for items that you can find around the house or office.
Although they aren't necessarily designed with a team in mind, it's easy to adapt the exercises for a group. Plus, the range of exercises makes the copywriters and the designers happy. My group, a corporate creative team, frequently pulls from this book for our weekly creative stretch. Everyone usually has a good laugh at the end results.
Basically a rip off of a book written in 1999 called 50 Creative Exercises.......2007-04-28
I didn't find anything original in this book. It seems to be a rip off of a series of books written by Dr. Nicholas in the 1990s on Creativity - called 50 Creative Exercises.
Geared toward designers, but great for ANY creative mind!.......2007-04-22
It is certainly what it says! I started tabbing all the exercises that I especially wanted to try right away. Well, let's just say the book looks like it's growing some very colorful hair with all tabs sticking out of it! A lot of them that struck me initially seemed to be photography challenges, but I guess that makes sense since that is one of the things I'm really hoping to improve on this year.
It addition to the exercises, they also have numerous short interviews with some leading designers across a spectrum of website, logo, promotions, illustration, animation, etc. In these, I found numerous ideas and concepts to ponder, some of which I will be sharing with you here in the coming weeks.
Although this book is certainly not specifically geared towards scrapbookers, I think any serious 'creative' would find great value in this book.

Praise for Idea Mapping
"Nast's work in Idea Mapping enables those with creative minds to clearly lay out their thinking process and those who are more process-minded to become creative. If your organization is looking for a pragmatic, step-by-step guide to idea mapping, this is it."
--Chris Brown, Executive Vice President, DTE Energy Resources
"I have used idea maps for thirty years and have taught MBA students, employees, and my children how to harness their power. I strongly recommend this book and believe you will feel it to be one of the best investments you have ever made in your own growth."
--Stephen C. Lundin, coauthor, FISH!
"This is a book that everyone should read. It's an interactive, thought-provoking book about the brain and learning that will expand your mind. Nast, an accomplished and well-respected instructor, has guided me into a new realm of learning experiences and possibilities. I'm sure you will feel the same upon reading her insightful work."
--Simon Tai, CEO, Buzan Centre Taiwan and S&J Media Intergration Co. Ltd., Host of News Discovery on NEWS 98 Taiwan
"Nast shows you a revolutionary method to capture your thinking processes. Don't underestimate the simplicity of idea mapping because therein lies its genius."
--Scott Hagwood, four-time USA Memory Champion, author, Memory Power
"The ability to visually capture and organize thoughts and ideas has enabled millions of people around the world to do their work with greater creativity and productivity, run their businesses more strategically, and manage complex projects more efficiently--even map out a sales process or new product roll-out. Nast's very practical, readable book will get you quickly up to speed on one of the simplest but most powerful ways to organize your ideas, your work, and yourself."
--Mike Jetter, cofounder and CTO, Mindjet Corporation, coauthor, The Cancer Code
"The principles Nast writes about in Idea Mapping have become a staple for me over the past fourteen years. I was turned onto the concept of idea mapping in 1992 and have been a student and practitioner ever since. This has absolutely transformed the way I learn, design learning, and prepare for public speaking. I have never been more confident in my recall, knowing the content is nicely tucked away in my brain as it was designed to be. Get ready for a life-changing experience for yourself and those you influence."
--Will Flora, Senior Manager, Chick-Fil-A University, Atlanta, GA

1 Map Vs. 50 Pages... I'll take 1 Visually Appealing Map.......2007-08-22
I've been impressed by Jamie Nast and her philosophy of Idea Mapping. I especially like the concept that you can put a complex idea on one page, and Jamie is running with it. I don't know about you, but I'd rather see a business plan on one gorgeous map than 50 droning pages. I'm also happy that Jamie considers software a legitimate venue for mapping (I especially like MindManager, which Jamie endorses at her website). A resource idea mappers at all levels need to checkout.
Should be common knowledge for learners and workers........2007-07-30
Giving the book five stars because I didn't already know everything the book tells you, but feel like I should have. A pretty light read and, I would say, on a 6th grade reading level, but all of the concepts in the book should have been explained to me by teachers in my secondary education.
I have to assimilate volumes of information, and mapping the info out in the manner taught by this book is the perfect way to do it. This use of the technique is only one of the applications described in the book.
Help Put Some Colour Back into the Workplace - and Your Life.......2007-06-08
This is a most accessible book. Almost by stealth, it introduces people to a very powerful personal and business tool. Idea mapping can help put the fun and creativity back into work - and open your mind to a technique to access ideas you didn't know you had.
The book takes an evolutionary approach to teaching mapping. Concepts and rules are introduced, examples given and lessons reinforced - then on to the next concept. Happily it's in plain English, with no business consultant-speak, and is easy to read and comprehend. Rules are introduced at the beginning to help the novice get started - later on these are overturned as experts are encouraged to be flexible and take account of the situations they are in and the purpose of their maps.
The focus is very much on business applications of the tool. Guidance is given on how to approach creativity, strategy definition, planning, preparation for presentations, planning and drafting articles and papers, organising your schedule and even 1-1 meetings with staff.
One of the most powerful applications of idea mapping is in learning and memorising information, books and manuals - whether simply to help retain more for day-day application or for passing professional exams or achieving certification. Maps provide visual clues to aid memory and readers are encouraged to embelish their maps with colour and images to enhance retention and recall.
What really makes the difference here is the inclusion of many real life examples. These are not dusty academic references but actual maps produced by real people to help them achieve more in real life business situations. More examples can be found on the author's website - extending the value of the book.
One of the recurring themes throughout is to consider the purpose of a map before you start it. Often maps will be fast and furious scribbles by way of an instant brainstorm, such as last minute preparation for an imminent meeting. At other times they will be developed with care, full of colour and images, as an aid to learning and recall.
Jamie Nast also introduces us to situations where maps need to be refined, developed and shared - and for which mapping software is a must. Advice is given on how to choose your software, the benefits and concerns and when and how to use.
Elsewhere in the book Jamie also explains how teams can use mapping collaboratively. A software tool is invaluable for such work. As a professional facilitator, I use software idea mapping with my groups. The map is projected onto a wall and ideas are captured, reviewed, restructured and so on interactively until the group are happy. Because the map is captured electronically it can be distributed immediately after the session as a map or exported into a text file, presentation or project plan.
Jamie also gives us a tool to help with group brainstorming. If you have caught the increasing number of articles on 'why brainstorming does not work', you'll know that getting every person to shout out every idea they have is unrealistic. Idea mapping offers a perfect solution where the brainstorm begins with individuals getting their thoughts down on paper before sharing with the group.
As mentioned earlier, idea mapping puts mind mapping firmly in the realm of business. In addition to being a tool to help organisations and teams, it is also a personal tool which managers use to identify and review their personal goals, manage their schedules and prepare their individual plans and presentations. Many of us are becoming increasingly aware of the inter-relationship between work and the rest of our lives (Doh!). There are examples given in the book of how people have assessed their careers and life goals using these techniques.
This book offers real encouragement to people to try the technique and access the creativity and fun they could experience in even the crustiest of workplaces. It's easy to learn following Jamie's well thought out step-by-step guide. Inspiration is offered by the many real life examples included - all of which can be viewed in colour on Jamie's web site. I have come across people at work who have seen mind mapping as something to be used by creative, clever people. You don't have to be clever to use idea mapping but you might become so if you do.
Very little substance.......2007-04-29
This book is yet another example of 15 pages worth of substance spread over 240 pages of fluff. A person would be much better served downloading the trial version of "Mindmanager" software and just following the included tutorial. It will teach you everything this book has to offer in a fraction of the time.
A Very Helpful Book.......2007-02-15
I love this book. It has helped me with my to do lists, teaching classes, taking notes on lectures and with helping my children to study. In my teaching; it has allowed me to keep my notes on one page and then to see the transitions more clearly. When questions are asked I can quickly find my place and give precise answers without flipping through pages of notes. My oldest daughter was struggling with science, but with idea mapping techniques she is able to use her creativeness to map out her study notes and has had more success with her testing. When taking notes on a lecture, I find that I can remember the speaker's points much better than the traditional outline method because it's mapped out in pictures and words.
I really enjoyed the book because the author has the reader participate in each chapter, so by the end of the book you are able to make good idea maps and rarely have to review the book.
What I have learned is a life enhancing skill that I use at work (fleshing out new projects or by doing my performance reviews)and my personal life (helping my children study, teaching, studying my Bible or by mapping "to do" lists).
The book is great; if you participate you will learn. I use idea mapping every day and I believe I am even more creative because of it.
Although I do not use the software suggested in the book, one day I may give it a try when drawing my own idea maps becomes a little tiring or less useful. But that may be well into the future because for now I'm having the best time drawing them out myself.

NLP 1.0.......2007-01-21
I'm just scratching the surface of this NLP thing, and this book is a good intro to some of the principles and a few practical applications, written in a very informal style. I finally understand what the heck a submodality is thanks to this book!
A good book to start with.......2006-04-16
From the editor of NLPWeekly magazine:
This is a good book for people who have just heard about NLP. However, it would be wise for experienced practitioners to skip this one. It is full of great self improvement advice, but not of true history cases with patients.
Unfortunately, in my 10 years experience with NLP trainings, trainees tend to confuse real life stories and metaphors. I've even heard of a practitioner who tried to immitate Bandler's story, and almost aniled his client to a wooden cross... Hey, that story IS A METAPHOR! It did NOT happen in real life, unless Mr. Bandler is willing to prove it. No REAL psychiatrist would allow a stranger to threaten a hospitalized patient in a psychiatric hospital. Get over your wishful thinking and learn to separate the fiction from the truth.
All and all, it's an easy to read book, and it can satisfy the newbie.

The book is a great introduction for anyone who's new to NLP and it's applications. Bandler has also included some very good points on motivation, and it's also the foundation text to his latest technology, Design Human Engineering (DHE).

I didn't find this book or NLP to be worth all the excitement it receives. Some of the exercises, I found hard to do: like imagining I am in the control booth of a theater, watching myself watch myself on the screen; or running a movie of my memory backwards. Since these two techniques seem to be the basis of his approach I was less than satisfied with the material. Other techniques he offers are making a memory larger, or brighter, faster, or clearer, or just the opposite: smaller, dimmer, slower, or fuzzy. I found this all to be somewhat difficult to do and not really about changing how I think about something. For instance, if I have a bad memory that I want to stop from harming me today, it isn't so much the memory that bothers me but how I think about it. So changing the way I remember it be it faster or slower or dimmer or brighter, isn't the same thing as changing how I think about it or the fact that I continue to think about it at all, if I'd rather not. Ovearll, this book did not offer anything extraordinary in my opinion. It did however from time to time offer a few interesting insights into how we think: for instance, we remember the very things we want to forget, and forget the very things we want to remember. This, and other little tidbits were interesting food for thought, ....
DUH!.......2003-07-27
I actually really liked the book but didnt really gleam any information that helped me out. However, I've been avidly studying self hypnosis for about a year. I'm sure this book has the potential to help alot of people. For example if you have a relative that is kind of crazy and you would like to see why or try to fix them yourself this book might be for you. Or if your making yourself crazy with bad memories or something similar then by all means buy this book. I however didnt really get anything from this book but an interesting read. If you really want to use your brain for a change try "Effective Self Hypnosis:Pathways to the Unconcious" by C. Alexander Simpkins, If your looking to tap the unconcious to acheive amazing results this book will teach you how to do it. You may scoff at the price tag but buck it up and pay it, trust me you'll be glad you did.

In search of the real info.......2007-08-30
While there may be a lot of good information here, it is inseperably mixed with a lot of personal opinion and drum-beating. Instead of just compiling reports from qualified MDs, PhDs, etc., Carper regretfully goes one level further and INTERPRETS these studies for us. Unfortunately, she is not qualified to do that. Her background is not in medicine or health, she is just a writer. She wants to sell books, so she becomes super-positive with all her "analyses". Sorry, Ms Carper, your embellished opinions are not objective, are not scientific, are often flat WRONG, are not separated from the factual information, and thereby destroy what might have been an informative book. I suggest Holford's "Optimum Nutrition for the Mind", or Stoll's "Omega 3 Connection" for those interested in more science and less hype.
A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste.......2005-08-21
Let me cut to the chase, there are numerous supplements you can take to keep your mental facilities in top working order, but if you are looking for the ONE thing you can do that will provide the best overall results - take a multivitamin daily.
Ms. Carper has provided another fine study of the current research (circa 2000) related to the human brain and the effect of various supplements or lack thereof. If there is one complaint that I have about the book, it is that it is dated, continued research in the field would argue for an updated edition of the book.
The four sections of the book cover the workings of the brain, what to eat, what supplements to take and how to prevent vascular problems from affecting your brain. True to her usual form the author presents the research for each topic, broken up by nutrient or supplement, further broken down by details of the impact on the brain of a shortage and the research data to support claims that the nutrient or supplement may correct the problems, and how much to take for full effect.
The discussions are intriguing in that the author's conclusions require so little action on the reader's part to correct or prevent the stated neurological problems (topics range from depression to aggression to forgetfulness to age related problems like Alzheimer's).
One of the reasons I bought this book was because I was heading back to grad school (in my 40s), and I wasn't quite sure I was up to it. Having completed 13 semester credits in biological and chemical sciences over two 6 week summer sessions with a flawless 4.0 grade average, I can say that I feel at the top of my mental game and ready for admission to grad school. My current set of supplements include: a multivitamin with minerals, coenzyme Q10, Omega 3 fish oil, ginko biloba and grape seed extract.
Getting back to my initial statement, unless you have a perfect diet (be honest), you need a multivitamin with minerals to ensure that you are providing the basic nutrition for a healthy brain, once you are there you can look into the other supplements for further improvement. P-)
Review of "The Miracle Brain"........2005-08-02
This is an excellent book. It is a "must have" item for anyone wanting to improve the functioning of their brain. I purchased one copy of his book for myself and another copy for my best friend. I feel certain that I made a vey wise choice in purchasing "The Miracle Brain"
Your Miracle Brain by Jean Carper.......2004-01-10
A main thesis of this work is that food can impact the brain
either favorably or unfavorably. The author explains that
men have brains that tend to shrink faster than women.
In addition, high blood pressure tends to reduce brain size.
Stress also damages the brain. There are juices which have a
positive impact on brain chemistry; namely, grapefruit,
tomato, orange and blueberries. Cranberry, spinach, kale,
strawberries and plums have maximum ORAC units. Raisins and
prunes are top anti-oxidants. Spinach, beet greens, tomato,
orange juice, cantaloupe, squash, sweet potato and avocado help
to minimize strokes. B vitamins and Vit C help to keep the
brain young and preserve cerebrospinal fluid. Selenium
boosts the brain and a deficiency can upset brain function.
The stone age diet is best for people. It consists of 65%
veggies, fruits, nuts and honey with 35% lean meat, eggs and
fish. DHA is found in seafood and EPA is found in a fish diet.
Linoleic acid is found in leafy green veggies and olive oil.
Brain fat busters are saturated animal fat, whole milk, butter
and cheese. This book will be a good addition to any personal
health library
Superb guide to your brain, health, nutrition, lifestyle.......2003-12-19
This book is a treasure chest of extremely valuable information on how to preserve your mental capabilities and to protect yourself from disease with the right diet and the right supplements and amounts of them. Did you know that people taking vitamin C or E supplements are shown in general NOT to develop Alzheimer's? Did you know that blueberries, strawberries and spinach are brain-savers? Did you know that you can control and possibly prevent insulin resistence by eating a low "glycemic index" diet. Did you know that eating foods equalling 5500 ORACs a day will protect your memory and motor control? (A cup of black tea brewed for five minutes contains 1200 ORACs.) Did you know that vigorous walking for an hour, five days a week will lower your risk of stroke by about half (p. 331), as will fruits and veggies and tea (p. 323)?
Jean Carper discusses the importance of Omega-3 oils in fish for pregnant women who want to optimize their children's mental capacities, as well as for the rest of us. She discusses the B vitamins, folic acid and the other, and their vital importance.
She gets down to specifics with doses to take and appropriate combinations.
I heartily recommend this book. If you buy only one book this year, buy this one.
The writing is energetic and enjoyable. The glycemic index and ORAC tables contain invaluable compilations for charting an optimal daily diet. I posted copies on my refrigerator door!
I've given this book to several people, all of whom cherish it.
Book Description
Embarking on a spellbinding journey to the frontiers of neuroscience, acclaimed science editor and writer Kathleen Stein takes an enthralling in-depth look at the prefrontal cortex, the site of our working memory, impulse control, reason, perception, decision making, and emotional processing—all the things that comprise our human genius.
Customer Reviews:
The Unfinished Brain.......2007-09-25
This is a well-written and engaging book, yet it is also a little frustrating.
Kathleen Stein is a distinguished science writer and here she tries to unlock some of the secrets of the prefrontal cortex for a general audience. The prefrontal cortex is one of the most recently developed regions of the primate brain, and it is most highly developed in humans, where it is involved in planning, reasoning, working memory and the control of behavior and our internal landscape.
The book is the fruit of some detailed research and interviews with some of the experts working in the field of frontal lobe function.
The book begins with three pages of diagrams, followed by an "Introduction," and six chapters:
1. Memory: The DNA of Consciousness
2. Reason: Logic, Laughter, and Looking Within
3. Passion: In Cold Blood?
4. Violence: Morality and the Minds of the Killers
5. Creativity: Art as a Window into the Brain
6. Silicon Minds: The Rise of Machine Genius
These chapters are followed by some notes and a good index.
I have written before that I only review books that I really like: my reviews form a part of my "recommended reading" lists for classes and workshops. This book is well written, the author has done her research and had the help of some luminaries in the frontal lobe firmament. So why "only" four stars?
I do like the book, but it is not the easiest read, and I say that as a specialist! Unless you are someone who can construct three-dimensional maps in your head, it is difficult to see how all the regions of the brain hang together.
The second point is more subtle and has to do with what we call "neo-phrenology." Phrenology is an old and discredited art or measuring the bumps on the head to try and deduce a person's character and personality. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries it re-emerged in a new guise: cognitive and emotional faculties started to be "localized" to certain regions of the brain. This piece of brain would "do" something, while another piece would have another job. With certain important exceptions, this idea is fundamentally flawed: many regions are specialized to perform certain tasks, but they also function as parts of larger systems and circuits. The prefrontal cortex is a good example of this concept. It has many specialized functions, but can also be recruited to contribute to other activities that may require more cognitive horsepower. Another example if the idea that people are "left-brained" or "right-brained." This is fine as a metaphor, but not as a neurological reality. Unless the connections between the cerebral hemispheres are severed, the two sides of the brain usually act together.
One of the problems with the old brain lesion studies was this: it is hard to try and work out what regions of the brain by looking at the consequences of injuries that often affect large portions of the brain, and secondly to then attribute a function to the damaged regions. If I remove the spark plugs from your car, and a passerby who knows nothing about cars notices that the wheels of the car are no longer turning, it would be easy to come to the conclusion that the spark plugs are directly responsible for the motion of the wheels.
The third point is that there is growing evidence that the prefrontal cortex may be susceptible to functional and even anatomical growth and change: trying to describe it is like trying to hold quicksilver in your hand. This region of the brain has developed during recorded history and is probably continuing to develop at this moment.
The attempt to be readable has produced a worthy book that does not quite hit the mark. The prefrontal cortex is a unique series of circuits, but is it best not to perpetuate the idea that we can localize complex neurological and psychological activities to discrete regions of the brain.
That being said, this is one of the best books for the general public on a tantalizing set of systems in the brain.

Genius Engine - A Laudable Book.......2007-07-12
The Genius Engine is a remarkable book.
It is a synthesis of our best understanding at present of that little understood part of our brain, the Pre-Frontal Cortex (PFC). The PFC is what makes humans unique in our ability to think in abstractions, to plan, to multitask, to regulate our passions, to be creative, in short, what gives us our genius. Until now, our understanding of the PFC has been very limited. But thanks to new technology and means to study our brain in living human beings, we have a much better grasp of what happens inside our brain.
Kathleen Stein has done a great job in putting together all this explosion of new information that is coming in each moment. She has presented technical information in simple understandable terms, without being pedantic or overly simple. As a former neuroscience editor of Omni magazine, she has learnt her craft well. This is how new scientific information should be compiled for the public. However, this book is not only for the lay person, but also for the psychologist, the physician, the scientist. Its prose is lucid, `neither diffident nor ostentatious'.
The new advances may not only help us unlock the secrets of severe diseases like Bipolar disorder or schizophrenia and help us treat them better, but also teach us to live creatively and peacefully. There is a world within that if explored may show us our place in the Universe; or at least, inform us how best to have the Universe within synchronize with the Universe without. When mankind has figured out the secrets of String theories, quantum physics and dark matter cosmologies, the brain may well be the final frontier.
The Genius Engine is a laudable work. A tremendous effort brought out with natural ease.

Many animals have working memory but the human brain is what gives our species a unique ability to reason and predict the future.......2007-06-09
Many animals have working memory but the human brain is what gives our species a unique ability to reason and predict the future. THE GENIUS ENGINE: WHERE MEMORY, REASON, PASSION, VIOLENCE, AND CREATIVITY INTERSECT IN THE HUMAN BRAIN draws on the author's decades of experience as a science and technology writer and editor to explore how our prefrontal cortex has the flexibility to update and process information. Chapters consider how it operates and how it differs in individuals, making for an excellent analysis perfect for college-level collections strong in health, physiology, and brain science.

Book Description
Creative folks often know all too well that the muse doesn’t always strike when you want it to, or when the deadline for your next brilliant project is creeping up on you like an ill-fitting turtleneck. Originality doesn’t follow a time clock, even when you have to. While conventional time management books offer tons of instruction for using time wisely, they are traditionally organized in a linear fashion, which just isn’t helpful for the right-brain mind. In
Time Management for the Creative Person, creativity guru Lee Silber offers real advice for using the strengths of artistic folks—like originality and resourcefulness—to adopt innovative time-saving solutions, such as:
* Learning to say no when your plate is just too full
* How to know when a good job, not a great one, is good enough
* Making “to do” lists that include fun stuff, too—that way you won’t feel overwhelmed by work
* Time-saving techniques around the house that give you more time to get your work done and more time to spend with your loved ones
* The keys to clutter control that will keep your work space and your living space neat
With these and lots of other practical tips, Lee Silber will help anyone, from the time-starved caterer rushing to prepare for her next party to the preoccupied painter who forgets when the electric bill is due, make the most of their time and turn the clock and the calendar into friends, not foes.

Time Management for the Creative Person; Right-Brain Strategies for Stopping Procrastination, Getting Control of the Clock .......2007-04-15
I liked this book very much because it was written for people like me. I was given many explanations for my behavior without making me feel badly. Also there were many practical suggestions that one could start doing as soon as the book was read. I especially found the part on procrastination helpful.
Fantastic for people who cringe at the words "time management".......2005-06-23
If typical time-management advice leaves you cold, this book offers a refreshingly different perspective, and tons of practical ideas that are based on creative and abstract thinking, not linear, robotic instructions. This is for those of us who are usually 5 minutes late, who search the house for a slip of paper with vital information, and who find day-planners to be tedious and inconvenient. And this book never makes you feel guilty or inadequate for not following traditional advice on "productivity."
This book proposes that organization and time management strategies should be personalized and comfortable. They should be empowering, not restrictive, and make your life more relaxed, not more stressful. Until reading this book, I had not considered that this was possible. I have adopted many of the author's ideas and specific suggestions, and I have continued using them for over a year since I first read it. I've increased my freelance earnings, created a workspace I love to work in, and reduced the stress in my life. If you cringe at most time-management books, please read this one.
Save Your Money. Don't Buy This Book........2005-04-04
Proof that anyone can write a book. Do not waste your money on this -- it is worthless. You can do better by asking yourself about your time management faults and coming up with your own solutions. This book has nothing of value. It is full of typos and ridiculuous quotes.
one of the best of the genre.......2004-12-29
Mr. Silber has managed to write a book that is funny, down to earth, and immensely helpful. His stories are priceless, and the tips are ridiculously useful and easy to implement.
A waste of time and money.......2004-04-04
I expected this book to provide innovative, useful information; after all, I'm a creative professional, always have a million projects going on at the same time, and really could use some help. Unfortunately, instead of original advice targeted to people in creative fields, this book is geared to harried housewives and disorganzied hobbyists. It is crammed full of platitudes, cliches, anecdotes about quasi-celebrities ("As a stand-up comic, Gary Shandling enterains audiences by poking fun at himself..."), quizzes (Are you right-brained or left-brained?), quotations, items ripped directly from press releases ("According to a survey by Select Comfort ...") and bulleted lists of hints (focused primarily on housekeeping and automobile maintenance) including:
* Stop to smell the flowers (yes, he actually says this)
* Brush your dog or cat while watching your favorite TV show
* Choose plants that are easy to grow
* Make enough for two meals when you cook and freeze the second meal
* Use paper plates and cups
* Hire a cleaning service
* Get more sleep
Probably the worst piece of advice this book offers, though, is "the future will take care of itself." No, it won't, especially if a deadline is looming and the rent check is due! If you work in a creative field and are looking for advice about enhancing your creativity and/or better managing your time and projects, skip this book. It is a complete waste of time and money.
