Book Description

Global Cities examines the distinctive commercial, residential, and spatial features of the major cities of the contemporary world--cities housing the financial and cultural activities that are most consequential for everyone, regardless of where they live. The development of these influential cities is intimately related to the emergence of modern telecommunications, the growth of multinational corporations, the internationalization of economic activity, and the increased movement of cultural symbols and artifacts across national lines. Accessible to readers with little background in sociology or social science, Global Cities analyzes numerous contemporary issues to illustrate concepts and processes pertaining to the most significant global cities. These concrete examples facilitate students' general understanding and show them the contemporary relevance of the material. The book offers a detailed and multifaceted picture of such leading urban centers as London, New York, Tokyo, and Paris, but also branches out to other important cities in the world. It analyzes both the internal features of the cities and the nature of their connections with each other. Global Cities is ideal for undergraduate courses in urban sociology and other social sciences.

4 out of 5 stars New Urban Sociology.......2005-04-28

Abrahamson's Global Cities is a welcome new book: It provides a truly global perspective on urban life, examining both the economic and cultural dimensions of globalism. It provides especially thorough examinations of immigration and the effects of foreign investment upon global inequality. It is a very well-written book, with little un-necessary jargon.

1 out of 5 stars Below average, disconnected book........2005-03-19

This is a poorly written work with disconnected arguments and observations. The premise of the book is interesting: most of the works on globalization and cities either focus on economic issues or cultural issues--this book will attempt to do both. From this promising beginning, the book falls apart from poor writing that takes the reader all over the place--geographically and temporally. Within the first few pages of the book, the discussions goes from the history of London during the Roman Empire to the fate of GUM shopping mall in Moscow in light of the Asian financial crisis in 1997. All this shifting isn't done with a postmodern sense of irony (although a crude understanding of postmodernism informs some of the analysis) nor social science rigor nor insightful observerations of a keen historian. The observations on cities and their relationship with globalization is rehashing of conventional wisdom and are just simply pedestrian. After suffering through the book, I'm puzzled over how Oxford University Press could have published such a book.

    Book Description

In their professional dreams, chemistry teachers imagine eager and self-sufficient students whose curiosity motivates their scientific explorations. Joan Gallagher-Bolos and Dennis Smithenry have realized this vision in their chemistry classrooms, and in Teaching Inquiry-Based Chemistry, they demonstrate how you can make student-led inquiry happen in yours.

Teaching Inquiry-Based Chemistry retraces an entire year's curriculum to show you how the authors weave constructivist theory into every lesson without sacrificing content. You will discover how slowly increasing the complexity of projects while gradually shifting the responsibility for learning to class members builds success upon success until students are ready to formulate and execute a three-week, end-of-year project where they function as a fully independent scientific community. Plus Teaching Inquiry-Based Chemistry is loaded with features that help you implement student-centered teaching immediately, including:

Get ready to make your ideal classroom a reality and find a fresh way of teaching the chemistry you know so well. Read Teaching Inquiry-Based Chemistry and discover how helping your students capitalize on their innate scientific curiosity will lead you to new levels of professional and personal satisfaction.

    1 out of 5 stars Doesn't help.......2007-07-09

I just starting teaching introductory Chemistry at a university. Many students do not participate during lecture and do not complete the course with a satisfactory grade. I thought this book would help me foster independent learning in my course. If this is what is taught in high school, then this is one of the problems (lack of preparation for college). The examples are more pertinent for a junior-high basic science class. I do see the importance of learning social skills, but the book lacks content for teaching chemistry. What were once called laboratory exercises are now called inquiry-based scientific communities. Beware of books with too many exclamation points in the text!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book.......2006-05-26

I enjoyed this book completely and plan to use it to revamp the way that I teach Chemistry. I love the way that the authors lay out how to create a community in the classroom gradually throughout the school year. The most interesting thing about this book to me is that, while there are many books about inquiry and about grouping students for learning, this is the first book that really described for me how to create a community of learners (whole class) that is self-directed in doing science. I can't wait to try out the ideas in my own classroom next year.

3 out of 5 stars Could be useful in right situation.......2005-08-12

When I bought the book I was hoping for a bunch of labs involving inquiry based chemistry and some key points on how to incorporate inquiry based chemistry in my class. Though the book did give some suggestions on how to implement it, it did not offer a wealth of ready to use activities. I thought it focued too much on how they came up with inquiry chemistry in their class and not enough time on activities and a step by step approach on how to begin a inquiry chemistry curriculum. It wasnt too useful to me but some people may find it useful.

    5 out of 5 stars awesome book.......2004-10-12

this book is awesome!! as a potential future educator reading about the authors first hand experience with creative teaching methods is inspiring. the only thing that could be more inspiring than the teachers are the students and how they took charge of the classroom. . no actually it's the teachers in this book that illustrate how creative teaching can bring out hidden potential in and change the lives of students. . . (shout out to 6-7B n EBAP!! =)

      Book Description

The first book to analyze why India's caste system has authoritatively endured for so long, this path-breaking text provides, for the first time anywhere, an exhaustive analysis of the historical predecessor to caste: the ancient Indian varna system as it was laid out in the Vedic literature. Presenting a revisionist overview of the way the religion of the Veda is to be understood, Classifying the Universe demonstrates that social classes were systematically reduplicated in taxonomies that organized the universe as a whole. The classification of society, in which some groups were accorded rights and privileges withheld from others, could thus be represented as part of a primordial and universally applicable order of things. Social hierarchy, argues the author, was in this way subtly but powerfully justified by recourse to other realms of the cosmos that were similarly ordered, and this essentially religious understanding of varna is the key to comprehending the Vedic world-view in all its complexity, and the persistence of its power in the social realm.

      1 out of 5 stars Says who?.......2006-05-09

we are advised that scholars of religion should ask "says who?", that is to say, "to whose advantage?". One must wonder if the same question should be asked of scholars of religion as well. Smith leaves no doubt that he believes that Brahmanas were written by Brahmins to reinforce their position and authority, and that the equivalences he lists are proof of that. Are we entitled to ask "To whose advantage is it if Smith's theory is accepted, without detailed examination of all the evidence?" (rather than selected quotes). When combined with incomplete quotes and strange lacunae in the index, this question could indeed be quite uncomfortable.

Seen from that angle, certain phrases which might seem as harmless conceits take on a more sinister tone. For example, Maruts are referred to as "storm troopers" (p.97 etc). Given the association that term has today, is its use deliberate? The same question arises when we see 'paroksha' translated as "surreptitious(ly)" on pp.222--223 whereas most (including Smith, elsewhere in this book) use "secretly" (literally, it is 'paras+aksha', "beyond the eye"). The anachronistic translation of purisha has already been noted.

In conclusion, we can only say that Smith has failed to prove his case, that the evidence he presents is selective, that he has ignored conflicting evidence even when he should be aware of it and that he has let his prejudices overrule his reasoning ability. We can only hope that non-specialists will become aware of the serious problems with this book and that they will not be misled by the overwhelming number of quotations into thinking that the evidence presented is exhaustive rather than being carefully selected.

1 out of 5 stars Makes invalid generalizations.......1998-08-25

Presents an unconvincing case about the origins of caste. Smith seems to have been swamped by information so that he missed the woods for the trees.
