Book Description
The new definitive reference in the field.
Between them, the renowned team of editors and authors have amassed unparalleled experience at such institutes as BAM, PTB, Pittsburgh National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety, BASF AG, and the University of Göttingen. In this work—the first of its kind for 35 years—they describe in detail those measures that prevent or limit industrial explosions and the damage so caused. They cover various preventative methods, as well as the current state of technology combined with data gained through experimentation.
This handbook offers operational, planning, design and safety engineers working in industry, government agencies and professional associations in-depth knowledge of the scientific and technical basics, allowing them to apply explosion protection according to any given situation.
Book Description
A perennial bestseller, Chemistry of Pyrotechnics and Explosives: Basic Principles and Theory, is simply the most definitive reference in this field. Author J.A. Conkling first covers the requisite background in chemistry, thermodynamics, and light emission, introduces oxidizing agents, fuels, binders, and retardants, then explores virtually every aspect of formulating pyrotechnics. Topics include the requirements for and preparation of high-energy mixtures, ignition and propagation, heat and delay compositions, and color and light production, including sparks, flitter, and glitter. The journal Pyrotechnica said this book "
belongs on every pyrotechnist's bookshelf."
Customer Reviews:
A reasonable explanation of the chemisty behind pyrotechnics.......1995-08-18
This is a book that discusses chemistry, on perhaps a freshmancollegiate level (or slightly lower), with an emphasis on thechemistry that occurs in pyrotechnic devices. It is intersting in that it references chemical mixtures from both military and entertainment pyrotechnics. Somewhat overpriced. Does not cover construction of fireworks, nor are the example formulas extensive enough to make this a usefull refernce for the pyrotechnic hobbyist. However, it is educational, and will teach you what is going on, along with some of the why.
Book Description
This timely book covers the most recent developments in the chemical detection of explosives in a variety of environments. Beginning with a broad view of the need for and the potential applications of chemical sensing, the book considers the issue of how to effectively include chemical sensing into systems designed to find hidden explosives devices. Offering a firsthand look at the latest technologies direct from those who are actively developing them, the book features:
- A look at the history of the field, including the contributions of recent programs
- A brief explanation of the chemistry of various explosives and differences in the place where they may be detected
- An introduction to the problems presented by trace element sensing
- An overview and comparison of the technologies currently being used and developed
- Case studies of field experiences with chemical sensors
- A look at the emerging threat of non-traditional explosives
This book is an important reference for explosives engineers, systems engineers involved in the development of related devices, government agencies and NGOs involved in demining efforts, military and law enforcement specialists in mines and explosive ordinance disposal (EOD), as well as environmental scientists and chemists involved in explosives research.
In addition to providing field workers with knowledge that will help them decide where and how to search for explosives using chemical sensors. It will provide them with an understanding of the potential and the limitations of chemical sensing in their search for and identification of dangerous devices.

Book Description
Incorporation of particular components with specialized properties allows one to tailor the end product's properties. For instance, the sensitivity, burning behavior, thermal or mechanical properties or stability of energetic materials can be affected and even controllably varied through incorporation of such ingredients. This book examines particle technologies as applied to energetic materials such as propellants and explosives, thus filling a void in the literature on this subject.
Following an introduction covering general features of energetic materials, the first section of this book describes methods of manufacturing particulate energetic materials, including size reduction, crystallization, atomization, particle formation using supercritical fluids and microencapsulation, agglomeration phenomena, special considerations in mixing explosive particles and the production of nanoparticles. The second section discusses the characterization of particulate materials. Techniques and methods such as particle size analysis, morphology elucidation and the determination of chemical and thermal properties are presented. The wettability of powders and rheological behavior of suspensions and solids are also considered. Furthermore, methods of determining the performance of particular energetic materials are described.
Each chapter deals with fundamentals and application possibilities of the various methods presented, with particular emphasis on issues applicable to particulate energetic materials. The book is thus equally relevant for chemists, physicists, material scientists, chemical and mechanical engineers and anyone interested or engaged in particle processing and characterization technologies.

Book Description
The book contains lectures of an international NATO-Russian Advanced Research Workshop about Detection and Disposal of Improvised Explosives used by terrorists. The ARW was an event of a series of workshops before, dealing with detection of explosives by different analytical methods and different shape and compositions of the explosive charge. The formulation "Improvised Explosive", IE, is a new expression for terrorist explosives, which were produced mostly by knowledgeable laymen in a home-made manner. IE can be any chemical compound or mixture of commercial substances, capable of an explosive reaction after initiation by a detonating device. The disposal of such IE is connected with a special danger, because IE are in many cases much more unstable and mechanically more sensitive than commercial or military explosives.

Book Description
This world-famous reference work has been enlarged and updated without tampering with its tried and tested format. Around 500 alphabetically ordered, monographic entries consider the physicochemical properties, production methods and safe applications of over 120 explosive chemicals; discuss 70 fuels, additives and oxidizing agents; and describe test methods.
The extensive thermodynamic data have been thoroughly updated and for the first time are also provided in electronic format. The included CD-ROM was compiled by the Fraunhofer Institute of Chemical Technology (Pfinztal, Germany) and represents an excerpt from the ICT Thermodynamical Database. Not only additional thermodynamic data, and references to further reading, but also enhanced search facilities are provided.
Other key features include: the 1500-entry combined index and glossary (comprising terms and abbreviations in English, French and German), conversion tables and many literature references.
This book is suitable for explosive experts and also for translators, public authorities and patent lawyers.
From reviews of previous editions:
'... This wealth of information and an index that comprises some 1500 keywords and several conversion tables make this a unique source of knowledge for anybody working with explosives.' (Propellants, Explosives, Pyrotechnics)
Customer Reviews:
Very superficial coverage, but many entries.......2006-12-02
I found the book little more than a disorganized glossary of explosives and related terms.
Yes, it does have hundreds of different explosives types listed, many of which are very esoteric and rare. And it does contain good thermodynamic data for many explosives.
But the explosives, terms, and safety data are all lumped together and only classified alphabetically in a single group.
Coverage is spotty. For example, black powder gets good coverage (relative to the overall superficial coverage of all subjects), while TNT is barely mentioned. Prills are covered in some detail while nitrification isn't even mentioned. Manufacturing techniques and intermediate reactions are at most just a few sentences, even for important commercial explosives.
All the information contained in the book can easily be found on the Internet or at your local library, and in much better detail.
Explosives - R. Meyer, J. Kohler, A. Homburg.......2006-11-10
This text is best described as being a dictionary of terminology, materials and techniques in the field of explosives. The tables for translating terms between languages are of some use in translating texts. but are too small to be useful to the average translator.
It also suffers from being a translation into English, and thus tends to ignore many of the more obscure technical terms found only in the English language. This can be a problem for more advanced users.
Its coverage of pyrotechnics is very limited. The coverage of this subject is only as it touches explosive materials. This field is closely related to explosives, and often the two overlap. Unfortunately, it does not cover this topic adequately.
Within these limitations, it is a very good reference text to be included in any library on energetic materials. It covers many commercial materials that would require considerable time searching for this data. Being a basically European text, its coverage of this commercial material is primarily european.
I would like to see its coverage expanded, but not its scope, which would make it more of an encyclopedia than a dictionary. Its price also is somewhat high, but considering its' subject mater, not too excessively so.
I recommend it to those working with energetic materials.
Excellent basic reference on explosive materials........1997-03-16
While lacking complex descriptions of explosive concepts, this book provides the user with an invaluable reference guide to the basic concepts behind explosive materials and explosive physics. An invaluable reference guide to a wide variety of commercial and specialty explosive materials, this book is a must have for anyone involved in the field of commercial explosives

Still Going Wrong!: Case Histories of Process Plant Disasters and How They Could Have Been Avoided
ASIN: 0815513941 |
Book Description
The security and economic stability of many nations and multinational oil companies are highly dependent on the safe and uninterrupted operation of their oil, gas and chemical facilities. One of the most critical impacts that can occur to these operations are fire and explosions from accidental or political incidents
This publication is intended as a general engineering handbook and reference guideline for those personnel involved with fire and explosion protection aspects of these critical hydrocarbon facilities. Several other reference books are available that provide portions of the necessary information required to evaluate hazards, provide fire protection measures, or determine insurance needs. However, most are not fully complete in mentioning all technical subjects and some have become somewhat technically outdated. They usually tend to be a collection of technical papers or else provide a broad coverage of subjects without much practical applications or details. The main objective of this handbook is provide some background understanding of fire and explosion problems at oil and gas facilities and a general source of reference material for engineers, designers and others facing fire protection issues, that can be practically applied. It should also serve as a reminder for the identification of unexpected hazards at a facility.
Explosion and fire protection engineering, principles for the hydrocarbon industries are still being researched, evolved and expanded, as is the case with most engineering disciplines. This and handbook does not profess to contain all the solutions to fire protection problems associated with hydrocarbon facilities. It does, however, try to shed some insight into the current practices and trends being applied in the petroleum industry today.
This book is generally written from the point of reference of the United States but does attempt to reference other international codes, standards and practices where they have been referenced or heavily used by the international oil industry. It does use SI units as the normal units of measure, to as these are typically used in the international oil industry.
Book Description
Up to now so called ‘sniffer’ dogs are the most successful and widespread systems for the explosives detection at airports and in public areas. Dogs are able to detect explosives under various conditions. On the other hand dogs are living beings and their behavior and skills are influenced by numerous parameters (e.g. age, sex, trainer, daily condition, etc.). To overcome these problems concerning the detection of explosives and illicit substances by dogs’ chemical sensors seemed to be a valuable alternative for this application and therefore a valuable tool in counter terrorism.
The presented papers are an outcome of an NATO ARW which was hold in Moscow and cover different aspects of vapour and trace detection of explosive. Starting from different scenarios (airport security, inspection of large areas, freight screening, boarding passes, etc.) and taking into account the capability of dogs the chances of and demands on chemical sensors are discussed in view of their possible application. Several papers highlight the capability and possibilities of different methods and devices for the vapour detection of explosives (drift MS, high speed gas analyzers, ion mobility increment spectrometer, etc.). Information about the post explosion identification of explosives by LC/MS and the development of explosive standards for dog training and sensor testing are presented also.
