Book Description
Here is the most comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of one of the hottest areas of chemical research. The treatment of fundamental kinetics and photochemistry will be highly useful to chemistry students and their instructors at the graduate level, as well as postdoctoral fellows entering this new, exciting, and well-funded field with a Ph.D. in a related discipline (e.g., analytical, organic, or physical chemistry, chemical physics, etc.).
Chemistry of the Upper and Lower Atmosphere provides postgraduate researchers and teachers with a uniquely detailed, comprehensive, and authoritative resource. The text bridges the "gap" between the fundamental chemistry of the earth's atmosphere and "real world" examples of its application to the development of sound scientific risk assessments and associated risk management control strategies for both tropospheric and stratospheric pollutants.
Key Features
*Serves as a graduate textbook and "must have" reference for all atmospheric scientists
* Provides more than 5000 references to the literature through the end of 1998
* Presents tables of new actinic flux data for the troposphere and stratospher (0-40km)
* Summarizes kinetic and photochemical date for the troposphere and stratosphere
*Features problems at the end of most chapters to enhance the book's use in teaching
* Includes applications of the OZIPR box model with comprehensive chemistry for student use
Customer Reviews:
Only book on the market.......2007-03-09
Unfortunately, there aren't really any other atmospheric textbooks out there that covers the vast amount of material which this text covers. The greatest flaw in this book is that it has got to have one of the worst index i have ever seen! It is very difficult searching for certain topics in the book. So unless you are not ready to create your own index for this book, you shouldn't buy the book. Other than that it is a pretty informative book.
New Horizons.......2000-05-02
The scope and technical detail of this seminal work covering the cutting edge in Atmospheric chemistry is beyond remarkable. Just the number of references is mind boggling. The book presents the material in a very readable and understandable style. The authors have kept the reader in mind. They also add surprising levity on occasion and show a keen grasp of areas outside chemistry. I know of no other work in this field that is more current, comprehensive, and helpful. If only other scientific works were as thorough and readable.
Book Description
This best-selling comprehensive lab textbook includes experiments with background theoretical information, safety recommendations, and computer applications. Updated chapters are provided regarding the use of spreadsheets and other scientific software as well as regarding electronics and computer interfacing of experiments using Visual Basic and LabVIEW. Supplementary instructor information regarding necessary supplies, equipment, and procedures is provided in an integrated manner in the text.

Questionable Textbook.......2006-11-03
I bought this item from A1Books. I searched around for the "Experiments in Physical Chemistry" book by Shoemaker/Garland/Nibler that I needed for my chemistry class at college that started October 24th. I ordered it on the 24th, because it said it would be mailed within 2 days. It wasn't mailed until the monday after I ordered it (6 days), but I recieved it that Thursday (9 days after I ordered). I was a little bit dissappointed by the slow transaction.
My main complaint is that instead of recieving what I was looking for, which was the 7th edition "Experiments in Physical Chemistry," I recieved "Customized Experiments in Physical Chemistry, 6th edition: For Rutgers State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick Campus." As I do not attend this school, and NOWHERE ON ANYTHING DID IT EVER SAY that it was 6th edition, or customized, or for any school. There were about 4 items in amazon with the same label, so I went with the cheapest one. They were all described EXACTLY THE SAME (word for word copy/paste), and I recieved a book that is different from the rest of the books that amazon was selling with the same name/description. Be wary of A1books, because there is no way to return books for a refund (all sales are final), and they don't seem interested in hearing from you (they send spam to the e-mail you give them, and say that replies to the sender will not go through).
Don't Date Robots!
A good PChem Lab Text.......2005-05-19
I felt the book did a great job explaining the labs from the perspective of the applications to the PChem theory learned in other classes.
This book lacks good explanations of theory, so hold onto your pchem text if you need this book for a class!!!
S-G-N...AN INSTRUCTOR'S PERSPECTIVE.......2001-12-06
(...)IN ORDER FOR MY CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERS TO MAKE USE OF THIS TEXT SOME BASIC PRINCIPLES NEED TO BE REVIEWED (OR IF THE STUDENT HASN'T HAD P-CHEM LECTURE THEY WILL ALSO NEED A GOOD LECTURE TEXT).
AS AN EXAMPLE LET'S TAKE SPECTROSCOPY AS A TOPIC...STUDENTS COME INTO MY COURSE LARGELY QUITE CONFUSED ABOUT HOW ALL THE PARTS IN THIS BROAD, BUT VITAL AREA FIT TOGETHER. OUR STUDENTS TAKE THIS COURSE AS JUNIORS AND LESS OFTEN AS SENIORS (ENGINEEERS ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE SENIORS) AND MOST WILL NOT HAVE HAD DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS.
WHAT S-G-N REALLY LACKS ARE SIMPLE CLEAR EXPLANATIONS OF BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SPECTROSCOPY (OR KINETICS ETC.)INCLUDED IN THE TEXT. NOT ALL THE DETAILS, BUT THE BIG PICTURE E.G. RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY... THIS IS THE FIRST MULTI-PHOTON EXPERIMENT MOST UNDERGRADS HAVE HAD AND, SADLY, THE LECTURE TEXTS OFTEN DO A POOR JOB (HERE I AM NOT COUNTING THE NUMEROUS CONCEPTUAL ERRORS THAT HAVE CREPT INTO SOME OF OUR LARGEST SELLING TEXTS) GIVING A SIMPLE EXPLANATION. TWO PHOTONS STRIKE A MOLECULE (SAY THEY ARE GREEN) AND A BLUE ONE AND A YELLOW ONE ARE EMITTED IN SUCH A WAY THAT ENERGY IS CONSERVED. IF POSSIBLE EACH EXPERIMENT NEED THIS.
P-CHEM LAB TEXTS GENERALLY DON'T GIVE A SIMPLE PICTURE OF THE CONCEPT (WHAT IT IS AND WHY ARE WE DOING THIS EXPERIMENT, HOW ARE WE GOING TO DO IT) IN SIMPLE BROAD TERMS FIRST BEFORE WE GET TO THE DETAILS. S-G-N, AS WELL AS OTHER P-CHEM LAB TEXTS NEED THAT.
YES, THERE ARE REFERENCES, BUT IT IS WISHFUL THINKING THAT STUDENTS WILL GO TO THEM WITH THE FOUR OTHER ADVANCED UNDERGRAD COURSES THAT THEY ARE TAKING. IT STILL IS THE BEST AROUND, BUT AS AN UNDERGRAD REVIEW NOTED HANDOUTS ARE OFTEN CRITICAL BECAUSE OF THESE KINDS OF PROBLEMS. I LECTURE FOR HALF THE SEMESTER TO OVERCOME THESE AND OTHE PROBLEMS; SHOULD THAT HAVE TO HAPPEN?
Comprehensive P-Chem Lab Text.......2000-09-05
One of the most comprehensive physical chemistry lab text, SGN discusses about calculations and presentation of data, uncertainties in data and results, background and theory for each experiment. Experimentals are extremely clear and detailed, though individual instructors might develop modifications. The uncertainties section might be supplemented by John Taylor's "Introduction to Error Analysis" for more in-depth reference.
Experiments are groups into topics like Gases, Transport Properties of Gases, Solutions, Electrochemistry, Kinetics, and Spectroscopy, etc. The text also devotes incredible amount of pages on electronic devices, vacuum techniques, instruments and lab procedures for reference. Many lab texts are published, yet SGN might be the best for students.
OSU Integrated Lab Students, Hear Ye!.......2000-06-17
Students were asked to purchase this textbook, and most students in the class agreed that it was more or less a waste. In six terms of lab, we did no more than three experiments out of the thirty or so in the book. The discussion is often at such
a high level that the 'trees in the forest' are hidden
by the surrounding fog. If you're taking the 300 or 400-series
lab courses at OSU, just stick with what's in the
handouts...that's what I did, and I got A's on about 90%
of the reports. Even if the profs tell you to read S-G-N,
don't waste too much time on it. As a research or reference book, S-G-N is fine and probably very useful (today I'm
an industry chemist, not a researcher). But if you're
an undergrad student taking labs at OSU or any school,
put S-G-N back on the shelf for a rainy day or
return it and get a refund.

Book Description
Computational chemistry has become extremely important in the last decade, being widely used in academic and industrial research. Yet there have been few books designed to teach the subject to nonspecialists.
Computational Chemistry: Introduction to the Theory and Applications of Molecular and Quantum Mechanics is an invaluable tool for teaching and researchers alike. The book provides an overview of the field, explains the basic underlying theory at a meaningful level that is not beyond beginners, and it gives numerous comparisons of different methods with one another and with experiment.
The following concepts are illustrated and their possibilities and limitations are given:
- potential energy surfaces;
- simple and extended Hückel methods;
- ab initio, AM1 and related semiempirical methods;
- density functional theory (DFT).
Topics are placed in a historical context, adding interest to them and removing much of their apparently arbitrary aspect. The large number of references, to all significant topics mentioned, should make this book useful not only to undergraduates but also to graduate students and academic and industrial researchers.
Customer Reviews:
Very good first intro to computational chemistry.......2004-08-28
The only other book I can compare this to is Cramer's, and this one is better suited to a first introduction into computatioal chemistry. I have taken one graduate quantum chemistry course, and this was more than enough background for understanding this book. This is the only text I know of (I asked my comp chem prof if he knew of any others) that walks through a Hartree Fock calculation step by step using an example. There are some mistakes in the formulas, but they are quite minor. All in all, I would recommend this book to anybody interested in beginning to learn about computational chemistry.
Rough reading.......2004-05-12
Maybe there just isn't any way into the basics of modern computational chemistry.
Lewars introduces the easy parts in a clear enough way. Potential energy surfaces make sense. Molecular mechanics has a good, intuitive feel - it's the springs-and-balls model, elaborated to include plane and dihedral angles, representing force fields derived from other sources.
After that (i.e., after p. 80), it's quantum mechanics for a few hundred pages. The premise is that the layout of electrons across a molecule determines its chemistry, and that the wave function tells where the electrons will be. Since the wave equations can't be solved exactly for anything with two or more electrons (!), it's actually approximations to quantum. That leads to two levels of opacity: quantum itself, and all the facts that were scraped off in the approximation process. At this point, the chice is binary: become fluent in quantum, or move on. There are a few nuggets to be had for the non-fluent, including some of the techniques for solving these horrendous integrals. Mostly, though, I moved on.
After the "ab initio" quantum mechanical methods, Lewars presents the semi-empirical models. These deal with simplified models of wave functions. Unlike ab initio methods, which stand on almost purely theoretical models, semi-empirical methods are informed by experimental data. They are based on the electron wave functions, as are the ab initio methods, but use approximations calibrated by experimental results. The book's final section presents density functional theory (DFT), another technique for estimating where the electrons will be.
This book demands a lot of the reader, more than I came in with or had time to develop. I was able to use it to get a working vocabulary of the major kinds of computations, the general categories of approach to modeling, and a rough idea of the techniques and complexities involved. I need a little more information than that, but not the immediate leap into the deep end presented here.
I look forward to a review by someone more knowledgeable. For now, my only real criticism of this book is lack of glossary. Initialisms and acronyms abound. It would have made the going a lot easier if the book had one place where I could refresh my memory on the dozens or hundreds of abbreviations.

Why Aren't More Women in Science?: Top Researchers Debate the Evidence
ASIN: 0841239509 |
Book Description
In spite of the increasing numbers of women entering graduate programs in the physical sciences and mathematics in recent years, they continue to remain underrepresented in tenure track academic positions in these fields. This symposium series book looks at the reasons for this under-representation of women in academic science. Social scientists examine the factors that are hindering women from attaining and advancing in these positions. The academic training of women in the US is examined as it relates to their placement in top universities. The situation of women chemists in Europe is also examined and best practices for the training and retention of women in academe are elucidated.
Book Description
Students taught with inquiry-based methods have been shown to make significant progress in their ability to formulate hypotheses, make proper assumptions, design and execute investigations, understand variables, record data, and synthesize new knowledge. The inquiry-based approach encourages curiosity and openness, and fosters a stronger sense of responsibility and satisfaction in the students who are taught with it. This text presents a series of experiments that are intended to serve as the solid basis for a first-year chemistry or physical sciences course, using an inquiry based approach. Each chapter provides: 1)instructions for an experiment; 2) teachers notes that give the instructor more in-depth information about the technical nature and intellectual objectives of the experiment; and 3) a sample lab report that provides representative data and lists a composite of sources of typical errors.
Customer Reviews:
Inquiry-based, but not connected to real life problems.......2006-05-26
The strength of this book is that it lays out 35 detailed Chemistry experiments that are not cookbook labs. It has concrete examples of how to have students design their own procedures to solve a problem. When I first started reading the book I was very excited and thought I would definately use it. The farther I read though, the more disappointed I got that the labs do not include real-life connections. Most students are not inherently interested in "Calculating the Heat of Solution," but could become more engaged if the author made a connection between each topic and a real-life problem. I think that a book that is far superior is "Teaching Inquiry-Based Chemistry," by Gallagher-Bolos and Smithenry. It really explains how to get the students engaged in real-life inquiry-based problem solving and describes how to get them to do it as a community of learners.
35 Great Labs.......2004-07-28
I'm a third year science teacher and just wanted a break from reinventing the wheel. This book has 35 great labs that are designed to get the students to think and also get them to understand the content too. These are not cook book labs which was exactly what I was looking for. There are thought provoking questions provided and a sample lab write-up with sample data for each experiment. Also the author includes additional suggestions, common misconceptions and safety information. If you want a book with ready to use labs that are inquiry-based, this is a great find.

This book describes what is essentially docking calculations in the context of the Accerlys software. The text is very qualitative and does not provide enough instruction to do any "molecular modeling". It seems to be more guidlines for various software packages sold by Accerlys.
