Book Description
This book presents in a single volume the basic essentials of the properties and processing behaviour of plastics and composites. The aim is to give engineers and technologists a sound understanding of basic principles without the introduction of unduly complex levels of mathematics or chemistry and thereby set plastics in their proper context as engineering materials.
This textbook pioneered the approach whereby both properties and processing of reinforced and unreinforced plastics are covered in a single volume. It assumes no prior knowledge of plastics, and emphasises the practical aspects of the subject. In this third edition over half the book has been re-written and the remainder has been updated and re-organised. Early chapters give an introduction to the types of plastics which are currently available and describe how a designer goes about the selection of a plastic for a particular application. Later chapters lead the reader into more advanced aspects of mechanical design and analysis of polymer melt flow. All techniques developed are illustrated by numerous worked examples, and problems are given at the end of each chapter - the solutions to which form one of the appendices.

Book Description
One of the most important subjects for any student of engineering or materials to master is the behaviour of materials and structures under load. The way in which they react to applied forces, the deflections resulting and the stresses and strains set up in the bodies concerned are all vital considerations when designing a mechanical component such that it will not fail under predicted load during its service lifetime.
Building upon the fundamentals established in the introductory volume Mechanics of Materials 1, this book extends the scope of material covered into more complex areas such as unsymmetrical bending, loading and deflection of struts, rings, discs, cylinders plates, diaphragms and thin walled sections. There is a new treatment of the Finite Element Method of analysis, and more advanced topics such as contact and residual stresses, stress concentrations, fatigue, creep and fracture are also covered. Each chapter contains a summary of the essential formulae which are developed in the chapter, and a large number of worked examples which progress in level of difficulty as the principles are enlarged upon. In addition, each chapter concludes with an extensive selection of problems for solution by the student, mostly examination questions from professional and academic bodies, which are graded according to difficulty and furnished with answers at the end.

Book Description
FROM THE INTRODUCTION "Considerable effort has gone into the study of various aspects of flammability and of various plastic materials, so that these materials which are proving so useful to man will always be used in ways which will not compromise his safety. The task is a continuing one, because the family of plastics continues to grow, and, along with it, its variety of applications. Some of these future applications cannot even be conceived of at the present time. The needs of man and his society are changing, and with them the factors that affect his safety, comfort, and convenience. A flammability handbook for plastics must necessarily involve a variety of sciences and technologies spread across the whole spectrum of human knowledge, and it is impossible to discuss all the subjects in great depth. Any details extracted for attention are brought because they are believed to be significant to the overall effort to make plastics as useful and safe as humanly possible."
Customer Reviews:
Plenty of tables.......2000-03-14
This book has plenty of tables which show many flammablity data which maybe exhaust many readers who want definite answer. The author has many interests of categorizing things in amny ways. For eample, the introductory chapter (Chapt. I) gives you many classifications of polymers, which will not be helpful any way to readers who are much acquainted with them. However, this is worth as handbook.

Book Description
Now in its Third Edition, Plastics is the key text for senior students studying the science and engineering of plastic materials. Starting from microstructure and physical properties, the book covers the mechanical, chemical and electrical properties of plastic materials, and also deals in detail with wider plastics issues that todays engineers and materials scientists need such as manufacturing processes and the design of plastic products.
The new edition has been updated to reflect changes in polymer technology and the plastics industry, and the increased knowledge of the mechanical properties of plastics. A new first chapter introduces plastics properties through practical exercises, to help students to see the relevance of more academic chapters. Computer modeling has revealed the mechanics of many types of composites, so the emphasis of chapter 4 has shifted to modeling. Applications, product design and process technology have moved on; consequently the case studies in chapter 14 were updated. A new chapter 15 introduces sport and biomaterials case studies, since increasing numbers of students are enrolled on courses with these emphases. The material has been thoroughly updated, and the principles of polymer structure-property relationships set out more clearly.
* Meets latest undergraduate needs for studying polymer properties
* Expended coverage of materials selection and shape selection
* New teaching case studies plus new material on plastics for use in sport applications and biomaterials
* Examination questions to accompany each chapter, with online Instructor Solutions Manual

Book Description
In this 3rd Edition of the Reinforced Plastics Handbook the authors have continued the approach of the late John Murphy, author of the first and second editions. The book provides a compendium of information on every aspect of materials, processes, designs and construction.Fiber-reinforced plastics are a class of materials in which the basic properties of plastics are given mechanical reinforcement by the addition of fibrous materials. The wide choice of plastics resin matrices and the correspondingly wide choice of reinforcing materials mean that the permutations are virtually unlimited. But the optimum properties of resin and reinforcement cannot be obtained unless there is an effective bond between the two, and this is the continuing objective of reinforced plastics production, design and processing.
· New 3rd edition of this comprehensive practical manual
· This is a 'bible' for all those involved in the reinforced plastics industry, whether manufacturers, specifiers, designers or end-users.
· Has been completely revised and updated to reflect all the latest developments in the industry

Book Description
A completely revised and expanded edition of this widely used reference to polymer science and plastics technology. More than 5,200 terms are concisely defined and explained. Hundreds of new terms have been added.
All aspects of plastics technology are covered including: plastics and other polymeric materials polymer science plastics chemicals including monomers, catalysts, fillers, colorants, lubricants, flame retardants and other additives processing and fabrication methods and machinery, including molds properties parts, forms and shapes tests, analytical techniques, flammability, toxicity, environmental aspects, and applications
In addition to coverage of all commercial plastics, definitions are given for other polymeric materials including adhesives, elastomers, films, foams, coatings and fibers.
Since 1978, when the second edition of this Dictionary appeared, many of its terms have changed in meaning or taken on additional new meanings, a few have become obsolete, and many new terms have entered the plastics literature. New materials and new processing techniques developed during that interval have given rise to new terminology.
Toxicity, safety, flammability, and environmental concerns have continued to grow in importance and to influence decision on choices of materials and processing methods. This edition, even more than the second, reflects those concerns in many of its entries. The push toward constant improvement of quality has caused us to add definitions of terms basic to process control, statistics and quality management even though they are not specific to plastics.
There has been a huge growth in the number of new polymers and blends since 1978. . . . More emphasis has been given in this edition to basic polymer science.
This edition has been strengthened in the areas of processing, rheology, plastics properties, and materials tests. . . . More structural formulas for chemicals and monomers are given, as are many of the important equations of polymer science and plastics engineering.
The editor, Dr. James F. Carley brings to this new edition his more than forty years of experience as an educator, author and researcher in polymers. He is probably best known for his pioneering work in extrusion and his work as technical editor of Modern Plastics Magazine. Most recently Dr. Carley was with the Polymers Section of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
