Book Description
This interesting and informative book gives readers the background (and confidence) needed for subsequent success in general chemistry. Honing selected portions for greater clarity in presentation, Stoker's book foregoes the multi-topic, watered down version of its counterparts by zeroing in on a smaller number of select topics, treating them extensively, and helping readers gain a solid grasp of essential, fundamental material. Develops each topic at ground level and continues step-by-step until the level of sophistication required for further chemistry study is attained. Topics place an emphasis on problem-solving throughoutuses dimensional analysis in problem-solving whenever possible. Features 17 vignettes on The Human Side of ChemistryBrief biographies of scientists who helped develop the foundations of modern chemistry. For those who have had little or no previous instruction in chemistry, or for those who want a thorough review of chemical principles.
Customer Reviews:
A students point of view.......2007-09-15
I am a chem major and had the worst luck of having a terrible instructor and book for my introductory classes. After a few horrible attempts at teaching I asked a different professor if they had a book they recommended. I ttold them that I would be trying to do this independently from class and that as a chem major I would need get a good solid grounding in chem. The professor gave me this book saying that it had been rejected by the committee that selects the books for the intro chem classes.
Cons: there are a few mistakes in this book and when I asked the professor why it was rejected she stated it was because there were some chemistry in the book that was wrong.
Pros: I loved the book. It was very easy to read and to follow especially if going on it independently ( of course when I had questions I asked my graduate level friends and they cleared this up). Overall it was a great book it really explained it on easy terms at least well enough that when other future professors went over a topic I found I could either grasp what they were talking about much quicker than the other students around me or I had gone a little more in depth than the professor wanted to go but because I did I was able to understand it better and quicker. The book is not perfect but it is a great basic chem book. Even now 2 semesters later I got unlucky to get stuck with a really dry hard to understand professor and I am using this book to reference as I once again continue to do independent learning.
One more note: I use this book as reference book so I have never read it back to back..I have always followed the syllabus in my classes and just looked up what I needed to know, worked out the example problems, and the cumulative problems. When my answered differed from the text that was when I asked my TA to help me solve. This has worked fabulously for me. I hope that this review helped. Heck for the price it can't hurt to try it. You probably won't regret it.
Sorry, but I am finding incredibly bad mistakes in this..........2005-03-03
It's too bad that this book isn't that badly written, though I disagree with the way the book is organized. I got asked to teach chemistry at our local community college for mainly nursing and respiratory therapists. It's their only chemistry course, and we didn't make it through two weeks of this book without finding so many errors in the questions in the back of the chapters, the quizzes, and I am finding more and more on the CD-ROM provided with this. I did not pick this book, and the department has gotten me another recommended chemistry book to replace this one, coming in next week. In the meantime, I have to double-check all the answers and do a lot of the tests and quizzes on my own with material from other sources, because the stuff for this book is so bad. This is not the fault totally of the writers, but of the publisher too, who needs to have someone capable of checking and proofreading who knows chemistry, and can sit there with a calculator and check all the answers. I cannot expose a group of students going into medical professions, who need to have a good basic grounding in chemistry, to such a badly proofed text!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent NMR book for the ones 'in between'.......2005-08-12
Lambert and Mazzola's NMR book strikes a nice balance between the weighty tomes aimed at NMR specialists, and the structure-determination only books aimed purely at synthetic organic chemists. For someone like me, who is interested in the experimental and technical aspects of the NMR spectrometer and of NMR spectroscopy, but only because he wants to run good, clean NMR experiments, this book is marvelous. Lambert combines concise and clear discussions of key concepts like relaxation, NOEs, phase cycling, and processing parameters, with succint and illustrative examples. One of the unique aspects of this book is the listing of ballpark parameters for many experiments including ones like mixing times, no. of scans, relaxation times etc. For all parameters, the essential things, and those essential things which you have to watch out for, are both carefully explained.
Lambert's book is a very useful tool for those chemists who are 'in between'- that is, those who want to do structure determination themselves and also learn the practical and fine points of spectral acquisition as well as processing, without too much detail, either instrumental or mathematical. Lambert and Mazzola give us just the right amount. A must have on the shelf of any scientist interested in NMR.

Book Description
This highly recommended book on transport phenomena shows readers how to develop mathematical representations (models) of physical phenomena. The key elements in model development involve assumptions about the physics, the application of basic physical principles, the exploration of the implications of the resulting model, and the evaluation of the degree to which the model mimics reality. This book also expose readers to the wide range of technologies where their skills may be applied.

not for the faint hearted.......2005-05-25
I am a Chemical Engineering senior at a major university. My professor forced middleman down our throats both for fluid dynamics and Mass and Heat transfer(double dose of Middleman..hehe..:).However he was a good teacher and pretty much derived everything .I got a B in the class and I am only an average math student. The book taught me alot and I am glad that I perservered ,particularly it made me appreciate diffQ's and how they are applied to design ,in Chem E. I have to admit this book is not meant for self study, you have to read it like 3 times to get it ,it's kind of a test of how bad you want to be a Chem E. Some parts are like advanced hieroglyphics. some of the end of chapter problems are insane(Middleman must have been tipsy:)). Despite everything I honestly feel it's a very good solid book well written for the most part and intended for a mature audience( like any serious ChemE's:). It is also meant to teach you how to think in terms of design and I am grateful for that. If you want to learn how to design air freshners:)and how to set expiration dates on bread and candy :) etc you have to suck it in and get through this book/Course. Maybe it wouldnt be so bad if students had access to answers to some of the end of chapter problems. I know it is engineering not physics but cut us some slack Middleman. Also if you really want to be a Chem E quit whinning and just struggle through the book nothing comes easy ,many have gone before you and survived. This book is not that bad. I recommend it to all who are not faint hearted. You dont have to be a math whiz to grasp the concepts ,if you look beyond the arcane math and if you dont get bogged down by the algebra, there lies beneath it a beautiful subject that will enhance your understanding of Calculus and Diffq's and open your mind to real engineering and its applications.
Good luck if you have to take this book and by the way pick up some No-Doze, before the semester begins , you will definitely need that.
P.S It also made me realise how worthless my diffQ. teacher was.
Greg
Save your money and many hours of your life........2004-05-22
This book makes people want to quit undergraduate chemical engineering at my school. I'd rather do slave work in a mineshaft than to try to read this dry and abstruse book again! What a waste of people's lives when professors force their students to try to learn from this book. The subject matter itself should be challenging part and not the presentation. You know, I think when authors spent too many years using the concepts, they feel like what is obvious to them is good enough for any novice to understand. I felt like I had to translate heiroglyphics and learn fluid dynamics at the same time. Of course, I don't mean to be so depressing and leave anyone hanging. A good book like Fundamentals of Heat&Mass Transfer should be like a day at disneyland compared to this book. Schaum's outlines can be quite nice too. Good luck!
Different from the others.......2003-10-22
I agree with some of the other reviewers that there are notoriously few books on heat and mass transfer which are not heavy on mathematics -- which has to do with the subject! However, Middleman's book stands out in another respect: it tries to balance the motivation behind the maths with the mathematical derivations themselves and is therefore much more self-contained than many others. Personally, I found the use of non-SI units annoying, but that may not be a problem for US readers.
Terrible.......2003-04-17
I think it's not an introduction but messy complexd.
This book require too much mathmatical background in despite of
an introduction.
I don't want to recommand this book to beginner
Excellent intro book.......2001-09-14
This book is by far the best INTRO text to transport phenomena from the perspective of a chemical engineer.
Of course, a student must be equipped with proper math background (such as BASIC differential equations, vectors, etc). Middleman presents the material by giving proper mathematical derivation and many realistic applications. This book should be easy to follow as opposed to BSL that requires higher level of math. Students that complain about the book should realize that they need to review simple calculus.

Customer Reviews:
Not for beginners?.......2003-10-22
I read this book first when preparing tutorials in fluid mechanics for 3rd-year chemical engineering students. Maybe there are other textbooks which give more detailed derivations (although I'd like to see them!), but Middleman's text is one of the extremely rare books where mathematical derivations are balanced with detailed accounts of the motivation behind it all. In fluid mechanics, it seems almost unique in this respect, and I found it a pleasure to read.
Crazy.......2003-10-13
I am a junior chemical engineer taking a class that is using this book. This book is awful. The examples are made to be over complicated, and the problems at the end of each chapter are vague, and full with clarity issues. I would not suggest this book to anyone, and i pity those who are subject to its fury.
Very hard book!.......2001-12-15
This book is very hard to understand. The author uses very complex mathematics, that most graduate and professors don't even understand. When coming up with the formula he skips steps that he assumes everyone knows how to do. This book would be ok for graduate students, but for an introduction to fluid dynamics it is a very difficult book. The book does have a lot of examples on different types of systems that will be useful if you ever use that kind of system. The book does have examples for a wide variety of engineers (ie bioengineers, mechanical, civil...). But overall this book was very difficult!!!
