Book Description

John McMurry's international best-seller is widely and consistently praised as the most clearly written book on the market. Why? In John McMurry's words: "I have been asked hundreds of times over the past ten years why I wrote this book. I wrote this book because I love writing. I get great pleasure and satisfaction from taking a complicated subject, turning it around until I see it clearly from a new angle, and then explaining it in simple words. I write to explain chemistry to students the way I wish it had been explained to me years ago." Through his lucid writing and ability to show the beauty and logic of organic chemistry, McMurry makes learning enjoyable for students. The highest compliment that can be given to a chemistry book applies to McMurry: It works! Mainstream in level, McMurry's coverage is concise yet doesn't omit any key topics. McMurry blends the traditional functional-group approach with a mechanistic approach. The primary approach, by functional group, begins with the simple and progresses to the more complex so that readers who are not yet versed in the subtleties of mechanisms are first exposed to the "what" of chemistry before beginning to grapple with the "why." Within this primary organization, the author places a heavy emphasis on explaining the fundamental mechanistic similarities. In this edition, McMurry retains his standard-setting features (including his innovative vertical format for explaining reaction mechanisms) while revising his text line-by-line to include hundreds of small but important improvements. For example, the Sixth Edition includes new examples, additional steps in existing examples, new problems, new phrases to clarify the exposition, and a vibrant new art program. In addition, new icons in the text lead students to a variety of new online resources. McMurry's text is in use at hundreds of colleges and universities around the world, from North America, to the United Kingdom and the Pacific Rim.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Text.......2007-08-12

I have used this text in my Organic classes and have found it very useful and informative. The author uses clear explanations and examples for all key elements in each chapter. The mechanisms and reactions are clearly described and detailed. Also for every college student the solutions manual reveals it all. It has both odd and even solutions. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because not all of the exercise problems really follow what you actually get taught in class, but they are still useful. Great text overall.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2007-07-07

This seemed like an okay book for chemistry. There were a few things that we covered in class however, that were not in this book, just a couple of reactions. I recommend the book "Pushing Electrons" as a supplement to this to help with resonance, it helped me a lot.

4 out of 5 stars Good Comprehensive Review.......2007-03-01

Good Textbook, clear and concise. However, for an advanced student who needs or wants to learn advanced explanations refer to another textbook on occasion. I use this as a reference on occasion b/c it serves my needs just fine, the SOLUTIONS/STUDY Guide manual is a must and gives very detailed explanations of the problems in the text, the manual is EXCELLENT. The strong point of this book are the practice questions which really get you thinking.

1 out of 5 stars Will not help at all!!!.......2006-08-05

This book was the required textbook for my organic I and II class...and it didn't help with either. If you didn't understands something the way the professor explained it, the book provided no help. The explainations in it were very short and were of no help at all. Most of the time the examples were too simple to really teach you anything. This is a very elementary textbook, that doesn't seem worthy to me of a place in any college or university.

2 out of 5 stars Didn't help me!.......2006-05-03

This text is an easy read, and you will understand the reactions that are given in the text examples. So why the low rating? Organic chemistry is all about "prediction". And when it comes to teaching you how to predict the outcomes of reactions you've never seen before, it is lacking! You can study this text two hours a day, every day, and unless you have an uncanny ability to understand chemistry (I don't)--you will still not have this most fundamental skill you need to succeed. Try "Organic Chemistry as a Second Language" and "Organic Chemistry II as a Second Language". They will have you predicting and understanding Orgo in no time!! This course isn't hard at all- once someone explains it to you properly. David Klein (the author of those two books) does that beautifully.

I ordered a used book for my daughter. Even though there were plenty available when I ordered, I received an email about a week later saying that the order was being refunded with no other explanation.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent O-Chem Book!!!.......2006-12-15

This is one of the finest O-Chem books I've seen! I own other textbooks, but this one does a spectacular job of explaining concepts in detail, and providing useful notes in the margins to avoid common mistakes. It's well-written and well-edited. I strongly recommend getting he full solutions manual with it as well.

5 out of 5 stars this is a darn good book.......2006-08-16

So I must admit that this is the book my favorite professor in college used. I also must admit that my favorite professor in college was Skip Wade the author. That said, this is a *very* good book if you're looking to understand the concepts behind orgo. Yes, there's memorizing (for goodness sakes, make flashcards! You can't get around this!). Yes, it's a pain. Yes, you'll find yourself doing 'back attacks' in your sleep. But in the end, this book will beat into you the intuition necessary to continue on in chemistry. And, as an added bonus, Wade throws in some little jokes to give you relief during those all night study sessions. Ah, memories...

5 out of 5 stars Just Buy It........2007-09-18

To put it shortly, if you're an organic chemistry graduate student the just go ahead and buy this book. It will be the most used book in your personal library. Also, if you are an undergraduate working in a research lab buy it as well. You'll have a huge jump on the other graduate students when you go to grad school having been familiar with this book.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable reference source of organic chemistry.......2007-09-06

The Strategic Applications of Named Reactions in Organic Synthesis is constitute the largest group of organic compounds and are becoming ever more important in all aspects of strategic applications in mechanic of action organic synthesis in detail.hence,I read repeatly.I promoted to the organic chemistry from this text book.

5 out of 5 stars Epic of reaction mechanism.......2007-05-10

This book is like an epic of reaction mechanism. When I read the book for the first time, I was tried to think about the mechanisms only but gradually I realized that application of these name reactions are more important than to remember. Real life mechanism applications are hard, but I am sure, if anybody can remember some of them that they referenced in the book will be great. So in one word, this book is awesome book that I ever read for reaction mechanism.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary Named Reactions reference.......2007-05-05

This is the best named reactions book currently available to the organic chemist. Mechanistic detail is quite thorough, and i hope a second edition comes out in a few more years.

5 out of 5 stars Strategic Applications of Named Reactions in Organic Synthesis.......2006-11-10

I just want to say that I'm really satisfied with the conditions of the book, the time that it took from the purchase until it arrives is acceptable. I'm going to start buying more from Amazon.com. I'm really happy with the service.

The book is very good. It gives a broad view of the reactions and then specific examples where these reactions were applied with the references.

Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry, 3rd Edition (COMC-III), is aimed at the specialist and non-specialist alike. It covers the major developments in the field in a carefully presented way with extensive cross-references. COMC-III provides a clear and comprehensive overview of developments since 1993 and attempts to predict trends in the field over the next ten years. Applications of organometallic chemistry continue to expand and this has been reflected by the significant increase in the number of volumes devoted to applications in COMC-III. Organic chemists have edited the volumes on organometallic chemistry towards organic synthesis - this is now organized by reaction type so as to be readily accessible to the organic community. Like its predecessors, COMC (1982) and COMC-II (1995), this new work is the essential reference text for any chemist or technologist who needs to use or apply organometallic compounds.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding textbook.......2007-05-19

I used this text in the 80's as an undergrad in Brazil, and am now a chemistry professor. Although my research is in computational chemistry, and organic chemistry seems a lot like fantasy to me, I still love Morrison and Boyd's textbook. I remember my experience with it, and my awe in finding that someone could actually put a textbook together that was enjoyable to be read, and easy to understand - and mind you, I was not fluent in English back then. I have just recently realized that all my organic texts have been "borrowed" by students, and that I should really get Morrison's. And this time make sure nobody will take it out of my office. If you want to learn organic chemistry with no struggle, this is the book.

5 out of 5 stars The standard against which all other text books should be measured!.......2007-03-23

O.K. Let's face it: what could be more boring than Organic Chemistry - right? WRONG! Morrison and Boyd's Organic Chemistry takes the pallid and dry subject of Organic Chemistry and imbues it with a vitality and interest that will stupefy you. Trust me, you cannot begin to fathom how effective this book is at making its subject interesting and more importantly understandable. The authors are brilliant at introducing a complex and arcane topic, incrementally building slowly and confidently a framework of knowledge and information that nearly makes, of all things, intuitive sense when they are through.

Every educator should study Morrison and Boyd in an attempt to appreciate how it works its magic. I can say without reservation, this is the text book against which all others should be measured. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most pyramidal texts of Organic Chemistry ever published!.......2006-03-09

Due its ambitious purposes and powerful transcendence, the whole understanding of this fundamental branch of the Science seems to be in an authentic crescendo day after day.

This book illustrates and clarifies such just a few, the most relevant aspects of this dynamic and expansive scientific discipline.

Recommended for students and teachers of Chemistry, Chemistry Engineers and Bio analysts.

5 out of 5 stars The Standard Chemistry Textbook!.......2006-02-24

I used this book as a supplement for Ege's organic book. It helped me do well in my class and prepared me for the chemistry GRE. This book is older but well worth the cost. I think it should be on any chemists' shelf of literature. The reactions it tells you are easy to understand and the mechanisms make sense. The only problem I would have is the spec. section for infared is a little weak. But it does everything else well so it makes up for it. Buy this Book for undergraduate study you won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars easy to understand.......2006-02-07

it is a great textbook for those who need organic chem. i am a chemical engineering undergraduate and the way the book is set up in problems and exercises is also great. after every section a question , that may seem difficult at first, is really a restatement of that section. but don't get it twisted into thinking that it is a pick up and go book. the solutions manual is a must if you want to fully grasp an understanding for this difficult subject. i also got a copy of the wade series to complement the book when i wasn't sure of the full chemical reactions that took place but overall, it's a great book to use.

1 out of 5 stars This is not a good textbook.......2006-12-17

I am not finding this textbook helpful whatsoever. I am in a prenursing program at Mills College. Explanations are not thorough and I need frequent help through private tutoring, other chemistry help books and textbooks, workshops. The questions at the end of the chapter asked are not even discussed within the text. It should be understood that the majority of people entering the health field especially nursing are resumers and have not touched chemistry in decades. At least that is the case in my program, it seems like a lot of them are resumers.
More explanations needed. More basic background needed. More examples. Corrections needed to be made for the problems. Plus if the problems are tricky then they should not be in black but in red. A lot of inconsistencies.
The online website program needs to be improved with more interactive demonstrations, videos etc.
I took intro to chem with this book and now i have to take survey of chem with organ and biochem next semester with it.

    1 out of 5 stars Frustrating.......2006-04-24

The explanations provided in this text book are decent; although, on occasions the book's breadth is insufficient. Unfortunately, the answer keys and test questions that accompany this text are riddled with inaccuracies. After my Organic Chemistry class gets back each test, we spend a half hour eliminating faulty questions. Further, while this book is egregiously expensive, one must pay extra to access the online features.

    3 out of 5 stars it isn't the best.......2000-03-31

    Book Description

This innovative book from acclaimed educator Paula Bruice is organized in a way that discourages rote memorization. The author's writing has been praised for anticipating readers' questions, and appeals to their need to learn visually and by solving problems. Emphasizing that learners should reason their way to solutions rather than memorize facts, Bruice encourages them to think about what they have learned previously and apply that knowledge in a new setting. KEY TOPICS The book balances coverage of traditional topics with bioorganic chemistry, highlights mechanistic similarities, and ties synthesis and reactivity together—teaching the reactivity of a functional group and the synthesis of compounds obtained as a result of that reactivity. For the study of organic chemistry.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Textbook I Have Ever Owned .......2007-01-12

This is by far the best textbook that I have ever owned. I did not go to class, but I was able to do well just by reading the book and doing the problems along the way. Organic is hard if you try to memorize. This text teaches fundamental principles well, which minimizes the strain when more complex problems arise. There are some problems with the solutions manual/study guide. There are many errors in the solutions, and I wish that the author would elaborate on many of the explanations.

4 out of 5 stars A fine book for learning organic chemistry........2006-11-06

I use this book in a college level organic chemistry lecture. I feel that the book is clear and also offers some colorful illustrations to convey the concepts. The figures and pictures throughout the book provide a nice "break" from the arguably heavy reading material. That is, I feel that I can better retain the information in this context opposed to strictly text. The only slight nuisance is perhaps the order of the book. My professor covers the book in a slightly different order than it is written, often skipping from chapter to chapter. However, I don't know if this is a fault of the book.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introductory Text for the Beginner.......2006-07-30

With colorful illustrations and a supplemental website for extra practice and concept connection, this text is one of the better texts for introducing organic chemistry. As well, there is a teachers' resource from the publisher which allows easy creation of multimedia presentations for the classroom or preparing online notes for the students. It's organized well in the beginning, although some of the topics at the end get a bit redundant. The redundancy has its purpose, though, as it helps to demonstrate the parallels of laboratory chemistry and the in vivo biochemistry.

The astute instructor will be able to guide the beginner in the typographical errors in the text, which are all proposed to have been fixed in the newest edition (though I have not verified it personally). When the market value drops substantially, I recommend this edition. However, if you want a more intensive study of organic chemistry, I recommend the Advanced Organic Chemistry series by Caery and Sundberg. Though not as colorful nor student-friendly, those texts are byfar the most intensive study of organic chemistry I have personally come across.

    3 out of 5 stars It's ok.......2006-03-13

It's ok I guess but I have no other book for reference because this is my first time taking the course.

3 out of 5 stars Yes, but with restrictions.......2004-08-07

This is an excellent book that uses illuminating diagrams and examples to explain fundamental concepts. It is by no means, however, an easy reader. To understand the concepts you must read the chapters and do the problems at least 3 to 4 times. (if not more). I worked very hard in orgo, which is one of the reasons why I did well in it. The only reason that kept this rating from being higher, was the solutions manual and the chapter on stereochemistry. The solutions manual is very selective in it's explanations. The solutions to the problems are not explained in a way that everyone can understand it. A solutions manual should always include detailed explanations of every problem, and this solutions manual certainly doesn't do that. Then, on the flip side, if you thorougly understand the chapter before attempting the problems at the end of each chapter, then the solutions manual is an excellent guide. Chapter 5, the stereochemistry chapter, at least all of it, except section 5.19, is extremely poorly written. Stereochemistry is a very tough and important subject, and although the chapter was 50 pages long, it was written very inadequately with examples that don't exemplify simple concepts. Get a model set to learn stereochem, I finally learned at the end of Ochem 2, but that was because I finally understood the basics, and understood that it was extremely easy. Overall, this book is not for someone that doesn't have an interest in ochem, but for someone that takes passion with the subject. I never went to class, but i loved the subject, so the book, for me was excellent. If you love chemistry-BUY THIS BOOK.

This book is in its 8th Edition with two new authors. The style continues the high standards set in the previous edition. I find this book to be a very good quick reference guide for chemical reactions, stoichiometry, organic and biological chemistry. I am very sad to see that Bettelheim and March have passed away!

5 out of 5 stars A+ For End of Chapter Problems.......2006-05-11

I had used this textbook at Ramapo College of New Jersey for Organic Chemistry I and II, and I found that the end of the chapter problems were superb in preparation for exams. I can't say much otherwise about the body of the text, reactions, mechanisms, etc., but I give this book an A+ for the End of Chapter Problems. They were tough and required a good amount of thought, which was exactly how I was tested in this class.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, especially with abstract ideas, but lacking in some practical matters........2007-02-08

I found this book to be quite excellent; it was used for an undergraduate course which I dropped, but I found the book so useful that I kept it. I find that this book is clearer than many professors. The strengths of this book are that it does a good job of discussing unifying themes, patterns, etc. The weaknesses are that it presents a somewhat abstract, idealized view of the subject, with little or no discussion of practical concerns or connections to other subjects. The author does not do a very good job of pointing the reader towards further reading, or discussing the ways in which one might pursue deeper questions.

One of the other reviewers complained that this book has too much explanation--I think this extra discussion of the "how" and "why" is actually critical for learning the subject of O. chem. Many students find organic chemistry difficult because they approach it as a collection of random facts to be memorized. In this book, the author consistently discusses unifying themes, and weaves specific facts together with general principles into a coherent fabric of ideas. This makes otherwise painful material seem natural and easy--for the students who have the patience to read every paragraph thoroughly. (Students who don't want to do this, in my opinion, have no business taking O. Chem).

The weaknesses of this book is that it is too idealized and perhaps at times too abstract. While the book does discuss reaction mechanisms and synthesis techniques, they are done in an overly idealized way. The author presents a very classical (and I would even go so far as to say short-sighted) view of Chemistry in which byproducts of reactions are totally ignored. Someone interested in chemical engineering, for instance, will likely find this book inadequate for their needs. Similarly, people interested in Biology and Biochemistry will find that this book does not make or even set up any of the obvious connections to these subjects. The thoughtful reader will find too many questions that arise naturally in the text that are not even mentioned, let alone addressed. Similarly, there is very little discussion of health and environmental issues associated with the various families of compounds. This is a shame, because the general trends and patterns in the toxicity and hazards associated with various compounds are intimately related to the trends and patterns in molecule structure and form that are discussed in this book.

Overall, this is an above-average text that is well-suited for use as a textbook in a basic organic chemistry class. I think it is exceptionally well-suited to self-study. In either case, however, readers interested in chemical engineering, biology, biochemistry, and/or environmental issues, would need to rely on supplementary materials to address some of the omissions I described above.

5 out of 5 stars Organic Chemistry Text.......2006-11-10

An excellent text book for an introduction to Organic Chemistry, comprehensive and well structured.

3 out of 5 stars A decent resource for Orgo beginners.......2006-09-14

Orgo (I, II) was the most difficult subject I EVER had. I've taken both sections over and went through 2 books. The strengths of this particular book are its reaction summaries: before introducing a topic, the author dedicates a page or two to summarizing the reactions that lead up to this topic and then summarizes the reactions of the topic once he's through explaining it. Example: 'Reactions That Yield Alcohols' and then `Reactions of Alcohols'. Summaries are accompanied by short, yet thorough descriptions. With elaborate and comprehensive reaction mechanisms, this book is more of a reference that a textbook, although the text is inclusive and relatively simple. If you understand the lectures and use this book for mechanisms, reactions and problems, rather that for understanding concepts, you'll be fine.

One major weakness of this book is the NMR IR Spectroscopy section, which does a poor job of explaining this easy but confusing topic. Another shortcoming -- the only all-inclusive table of functional groups is provided in the index at the very back of the book, so you'll have to make a copy to keep it handy at all times. The problems deserve a mention -- most are simple and repetitive, those who do them get the grades.

A general note to the beginners: ALLNIGHTERS BEFORE ORGO EXAMS DO NOT WORK (even if you put Ritalin in your coffee)!!! Do yourselves a big favor, study constantly through the semester and just review before the exam. Concentrate on mechanisms and problems rather than on theory and you will successed. Remember -- memorization comes from doing problems and not from repeating a reaction 10 times in a row. All the luck in the world to the brave souls who register for o-chem!

3 out of 5 stars In Peripatetic Style, Carey Waxes Tirelessly While Avoiding the Point.......2006-05-05

Ok, perhaps I'm being a little harsh. Whether or not you enjoy this book by the esteemed Professor Emeritus Dr. Carey (Virginia ) depends largely on the teaching methods you embrace. Personally, I am the "Joe Friday" of students. Just the facts please unless and until I ask for more. As I read Carey, I envision a group of gangly sophomores following their Professor around their Jeffersonian campus as their teacher drops morsels of wisdom and his students anxiously retrieve them. As the brisk walk comes to a close, Professor Carey will guide you back to the classroom from where you originally departed and tell you all that you really needed to know about organic chemistry.

All of the aforementioned is a "Careyesque" way of saying, if you use this text, always read the last paragraph first. If you curious about "Why?", then go back and read the preceding paragraphs ( in order ).

The fine details that Carey offers in some areas are truly quite interesting on subsequent reading but at first they are tiresome and admittedly distracting.

I grew to love organic chemistry. Like most difficult subjects, it requires multiple textbooks to truly tame this monster. If you find the Carey approach annoying, I suggest some additional material.

Brown/Foote have published a fine text on Organic Chemistry with an additional solutions manual. No fluff here. These guys grew on watching Friday and Gannon. They are an excellent source of mechnisms and practice problems not found in Carey. Another nice benefit of Brown/Foote is that they organize the problems in the back of each chapter under the topic of the material so you can target your weaknesses. Strongly recommended. 5 stars.

Also, please utilize Professor Klein's ( Hopkins ) two books ( Organic Chemistry as a 2nd language and Second semester topics ). I found his books to be a wonderful STARTING point for topics and he often has wonderful heuristics that are helpful. Beware however, that I did find direct contradictions in a few areas between Carey and Klein on the subject of Substitution vs Elimination competition. In fairness to both, the matter is very difficult to illuminate because many times the answer is a prediction but results must be determined experimentally.

Finally, do NOT buy flash cards. You must make your own. Use them religiously. Keep score of the number of times to get the answer right AND the number of times you get it wrong. Keep working the cards until you get it right more times than you get it wrong.

I also purchased the solutions manual for Carey. All I can say is that you CANNOT live without it. It is a superb tool when used properly. The practice exams at the end of each chapter are terrific.

Good luck on your journey. May you tame the monster young Jedi.

The book was fine. It's our class textbook and it was cheaper new that it was used in the bookstore at school. However, I had problems with it being shipped with me. The street I live on got renumbered and UPS was unable to find my house. I ended up picking it up from their offices even though I paid to have it shipped next day. So that was a huge hassle with amazon and their shipper UPS.
