Book Description

This concise, introductory text focuses on the basic principles of biochemistry, filling the gap between the encyclopedic volumes and the cursory overview texts. Principles of Biochemistry, 4/e has a well-deserved reputation for being the most accurate biochemistry textbook in the market. Widely praised in its previous edition for currency, and clarity of exposition, the new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect recent changes in this dynamic discipline.

3 out of 5 stars Biochemistry text that leans more on the chemistry side..........2007-06-01

This book was adopted by my university for a senior level / first year graduate level biochemistry course. It is well written and contains no messy jargon. Literally all of the text is useful information. In addition, it is concise.

My chief complaints about the book are: 1) the illustrations require substantial updating to be compared to what is presently available even in inferior texts. 2) it lacks clinical/biological correlations and focuses instead on the quantitative nature of biochemistry (acid base calculations etc) Clinical correlations are certainly essential to applying biochemistry concepts. If this book had either or both of these two items, it would have earned 5 stars from me!

Instead, I recommend the following texts:
- Biochemistry: outstanding illustrations and concept coverage.
- Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach: outstanding clinical correlations with concise concept coverage and good illustrations (although not in full color)
- Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, Fourth Edition: outstanding text and illustrations!

4 out of 5 stars Probably the best introductory text for Biochemistry. No Stereoviews?.......2006-11-10

This is one of the most readable texts for biochemistry on the market. It would be most useful for undergraduates and medical students. It is almost useless for graduate students in the biological sciences because it doesn't talk enough about experimental strategies. The older version of this text was much cooler because it has stereoviews. This feature makes the book stand out because the stereoviews are awesome. Whose idea was it to remove them??? This would make a good first book in biochemistry, but for upper level students I would recommend Stryer.

4 out of 5 stars Why your reviews are important..........2006-08-14

I am a biochemistry professor. After years of using another text I decided to try the Voet & Voet text. I was very excited about their latest edition and couldn't wait to teach with it. Unfortunately it was a disaster. There are far too many trees in Voet & Voet, and students couldn't see the forest this year. For next year I am looking at "Principles of Biochemistry" 4th edition by Horton et al.

So, in response to V. Kankanala below, student perspectives in these Amazon Reviews are very useful to those of us assigning the texts.

4 out of 5 stars Fine book, for whatever it matters.......2006-02-28

The book is decent. To be honest though, reviewing textbooks is kind of funny. Does it matter what I say? I suppose if you're ordering this book because you honestly just have a burning desire to learn about the principles of biochemistry, well... the more power to you. You'll learn it just fine from this book. If you're just buying the book because it's the required text for your college class (like I expect), well yeah, doesn't really matter what I say, does it?

Just the book I needed! Has lots of colorful pictures which is helpful with all those twisty-turny proteins and amino acids!

5 out of 5 stars Good reference for non-chemists.......2005-06-15

As a physics graduate student interested in biophysics research, I found this text an invaluable resource. I had intro chemistry as an undergrad and AP bio in high school, but no organic chemistry or any other background. This text contained a clear introduction to biochemistry and described a lot of the techniques I was reading about in scientific papers in language that a non-chemist could understand. I still refer back to it frequently.

5 out of 5 stars Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry is simply the best one........2004-05-10

The Lehninger Princicples of Biochemistry is the best book in biochemistry that has been written. I have use it in my biochemistry course in my first year in school medicine and thanks to this book I pass my class with one of the best notes in the group. Any other book exposes the biochemistry principles with clarity and coherence like the Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry. I can't wait for the 4th edition.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for biochemistry.......2004-02-15

This book is complete and thorough in explaing every energy pathway (Kreb's cycle, electron transport system, glycolysis, etc.) The diagrams are helpful and explain the material with visual detail especially in this type of book. The only thing, the book is somewhat hard to understand for reading it the first time. I know biochemistry is a hard subject, but I thought it could be explained in a little easier fashion. However, other than that, the book is quite organized and a must buy for every chiropractic student taking biochemistry. I also highly recommend:
National Board of Chiropractic Part I Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
Both these books I found very helpful for studying for the National boards. The text is a must for studying for the biochemistry part of the chiro boards.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Can't wait for the Next Edition!.......2004-01-24

If you are a undergraduate or a graduate student who needs to learn some biochemistry from the ground up (without an instructor), this is the text for you. Lehninger really outdoes himself by creating a Biochemistry textbook that's not only colorful and pretty to look at but also wonderfully written. Of all of the science textbooks I've had to read to date, this was the best! Lehninger really does write the text so that it's like reading a novel, which allows for maximum absorption of the material he covers. Occasionally, I hit spots in my reading which were harder to understand, but that was because my own ignorance and not his. He begins the text with a review of the basics of general chemistry and organic chemistry which come into play with the biochemistry subject matter. Then he continues on, developing the student's foundations with describing protein structure and protein function, working his way up with enzymatic properties and activities. Carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids come next. The last section of the book is devoted to biochemical mechanisms, which is alot, but it is covered adequately for a beginner's textbook. The only major drawback: many of the answers to the chapter questions are wrong, hopefully, this will be addressed in the 4th Ed. If your school doesn't use Lehninger, protest, write treatises, do anything to convince your Biochemistry professor to use this text to teach you biochemisty! It's expensive, but once you have this textbook, don't ever sell it because if you're going into chemistry or biochemistry, it will be a priceless resource for your future studies!

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs way up.......2003-06-14

This book is one of the best biochemistry available. It presents an extensive amount of valuable concepts and information a highly readable manner. I used this text as an undergraduate and even as a gradduate student I find it impossible to part with it. The understanding biochemistry CD that is included with the book is also an excellent tool for revision. I found that the retention of information and ease of understanding is higher when the book is used in conjunction with the CD. It comes highly recommended for any serious students of biochemistry and as an invaluable reference.

4 out of 5 stars good with an adjunct.......2005-04-14

this is a very nice book with abundant information.there are few topics which are dealt extraordinarily especially centrifugation,HPLC,electrophoresis etcetera.i have been studying this book from my graduation.initially i used to feel some difficulty with this book,so i studied biopysical and biophysical techniques by Upadhyaya and Upadhyaya.once i got the clear idea regarding the techniques,i shifted to this book.now i feel this book is very helpful.it is highly recommended to all biology students.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.......2003-05-09

This book is an invaluable source of information not only for those studying about various practical techniques but even those engaged in experiments in a lab environment. Written more as an overview, it works to familiarize the reader with the principles of both experimental protocols and the equipment that might be used, for example centrifuges. It's very useful to go back to it from time to time to get a refresher on techniques that I might use on a regular basis but might not remember all the details of. Highly recommended. It's also written quite simply, which unfortunately is not the case for all biology texts.

4 out of 5 stars A useful, informative guide to practical biology.......1998-01-04

This book would be especially useful to science students engaging in a predominantly practical-based biological course.

5 out of 5 stars Great MEDICAL Biochemistry Textbook.......2007-05-10

This book is designed to educate medical students. It is easy and if you do the questions at the end of the chapters it helps you have a sound foundation of medical biochemistry. It is CLINICALLY oriented!!!

2 out of 5 stars bad.......2005-11-18

the visual illastrations are almost non existant and the book was extreamly disorganized, for example, he will discuss a topic in one chapter, then talk about something else, then go back to it in another chapter. I would go with Voet, lipincott and BRs biochem

5 out of 5 stars REVIEW PRINCIPLES OF MEDICAL BIOCHEMISTRY.......2005-08-30

EXCELLENT BOOK I STRONGLY RECOMMENDED FOR THOSE INTERESTED ON THE SUBJECT

2 out of 5 stars Let's Talk the Truth.......2004-04-18

I too was taught by Dr. Meisenberg, which he teaches at a Caribbean Medical School, Ross. First of all, he has a very strong accent to understand in the class. Second, I did not find the book to be written well. Third, the other professors who also taught my biochem class stated that there was some errors and information missing. Personally, I would suggest Basic Approach to BioChem,(which was suggested by one of the other biochem teachers to me) if you are like me and struggled in undergrad with chem & organic chemistry. It spells out everything also another good Biochem that helped me get through this course was Lippincott's Biochemistry...a good book too.

4 out of 5 stars Good Textbook.......2001-12-27

The author, Dr. Meisenberg, actually teaches Biochemistry at the medical school I attend. I found the text very well formatted and the illustrations extremely helpful. I personally read this book from cover to cover and along with the BRS, I think Biochemistry doesn't have to be a painful experience. Meisenberg integrates metabolism and other important subjects into several chapters to re-emphasize key points over and over. Many elaborate illustrations and graphs make learning hard to remember facts easier, and with the help of pertinent biochemical clinical facts you'll soon find relevance in a clinical setting far from the classroom.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Incursions in the Infinitely Unimaginable Kingdom of Wireframes .......2007-06-28

Fascinating Incursions in the Infinitely Unimaginable Kingdom of Lehninger's Principles of Biochemistry(Fourth Edition) (Hardcover) by David L. Nelson and Michael M. Cox, Freeman 2004.
This is a medium-sized heavyweight classic, updated, honest and useful for physicians. The authors do not make a fuss about the wealth of data available in biochemistry, keep a cool attitude overall and somehow manage to inspire lay readers. Physicians benefit from it a lot, since the dreaded detail of molecular pathology is described at an amazing level of medical awareness and even clinical relevance. Molecular models are clear enough for the busy practitioner who has little if any real interest in the arcane wireframes of those nevertheless current substances involved in prescriptions. The print is fine, and readable, the pagesetting is minimalist but useful, and the index is workable. As for the biochemical material, in the original text of Lehninger, everything has been carefully updated, in order not to spoil the reader with the usual Big Pharma nonsense. Incredible as it may sound this is an independent book even in the Age of Virtual News. Highly Reccommended.
In conclusion, here we have a book we will not buy for the beauty of our reference desk, even in the age of the instant reference.

5 out of 5 stars Compulsory Read for Bioscience Students.......2007-05-07

What can I say? This book is almost certainly on every university's recommended reading for biochemistry, molecular biology and bioscience students. It is incredibly generous in detail and depth. I've used it for my undergraduate and postgraduate studies and still keep it as a crucial reference for my doctorate research. Definitely a must have!

5 out of 5 stars good text and illustrations.......2007-01-19

It is very usefull book and it consist alot of information. More, this book is easy to read for foreigners. I am glad to have it.:)

3 out of 5 stars supplemental.......2006-12-22

This book was a supplemental text for my class, so it was good as an aid for material not covered extensively enough in my other text. It is not terribly deep in context, though, especially for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Short Attention Spans.......2006-11-25

This Biochemistry textbook is extremely well-written. The figures, tables, and boxes are quite informative, and the problems at the ends of the chapters will challenge you a lot! I really don't know why anyone in the sciences would not like this book. First of all, an incredible amount of data and research went into the making of this book -- so there is A LOT to learn. Second of all, this is a Biochemistry textbook, which means that the material will seem mind-numbing and dry. But since when does "interesting" entail "fun"? No one can be automatically excited by the subject matter; it requires a conscious effort to GET excited, once you get past the mind-numbing part -- exercise your brain!

The only reason I can think of which would turn people away from this book is having a short attention span! The whole point of learning is not to be entertained but to be educated, and this book is the perfect tool for educating. There aren't any goofy cartoon characters or child-like drawings in this book, which may seem why many are turned off by it. But the subject matter is extremely interesting, and if you are willing to learn about the amazing chemical processes within cells, then buy this book! (Learning Glycolysis and the Citric Acid Cycle for the first time will NOT be a fun task -- take my word for it, it's extremely dull -- and no amount of cartoons can make metabolic processes fun. But such processes should be appreciated, regardless of the level of difficulty in learning them.)

1 out of 5 stars NOT a solutions manual.......2007-09-29

I don't do reviews, but I'm so angry, I just had to.

The title of this text is misleading. It leads one to believe that it contains worked solutions to questions asked in the text. It does NOT. Instead, it contains warm and furry puzzles and discussion questions (with answers to those.)

Everyone knows what a "solutions manual" is -- or even a "study guide and solutions manual." It is a book with solutions (potentially to "selected problems" if the authors are feeling particularly stingy and manipulative) in the text.

Hello authors and publishers! Wake up! What full time undergrad science student has the time to do anything besides the bare reading and exams (unless they've never been to the gym a day in their life and live on dingdongs and coffee?) "Study groups" are BS sessions with people yammering so loud you can't think. Why would you force your happy fuzzy "it's all about learning" ideology down my throat with your deceptive title? Why don't you let ME and my professor worry about how good a biochemist I'm going to be? Grant me the dignity of charting my own course through our pathetic public university system!

The authors and the publisher should be prosecuted for FRAUD and forced to offer refunds to anyone who purchased the book, new or used, regardless of the source. Then they need to rename it "Warm and furry study manual to accompany... blah, blah."

4 out of 5 stars Very pleased.......2007-02-19

The producted was in the condition promised by the seller. I am satisfied with the product BUT I paid extra for priority shipping and it took over a week to receive the book.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2007-02-15

This workbook contains cross-words and a variety of different quiz questions to help review. I probably use this source more than the text associated with it, because our class is focused around the lecture moslty. A great buy and a great way to keep up with the material.

4 out of 5 stars Good Study Aid.......2007-01-05

The problems in this book reallly help to understand the concepts. Also it give a more precise way to focus in what is most relevant in each chapter.

4 out of 5 stars Should be required for about 75% of us.......2006-11-10

A solution manual is a great thing to have in an undergraduate biochem class.
All of the solutions are in the back section.
The front of the book goes through each chapter and focuses on what the authors feel is most important.
There are even suggested topics for discussion with your study group.

I am student of Agronomy, Ljubljana - Slovenia. This subject is one of the most terrible in our 2nd year, but when I bought this book it was like I found a treasure. I passed the exam at first time and with a good mark. This is the best book I was ever studying from. I wish you to do more books like this one is. My best and kindest regards. 5 out of 5 stars a book to use, and a book to keep.......1999-05-01

Lehninger's book remains the best single text in biochemistry, at least in English. A fine book for undergraduates, it is also the one volume that you may keep on your shelf for years to come, and the best biochem text for those whose primary specialty is not biochemistry (e.g. medicine, p-chem, microbio). No text is ever a substitute for the journals if you work in the field, but this book gives a sense of the whole discipline that is beneficial for anyone who may become too narrowly fixed on one topic. Its clear writing is also a blessing, both for those using English as a second language, and for native speakers with some affection for their own language

Great help at the bench work, from theoretical to practical points

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional book by an exceptional scientist!.......2005-08-27

As a Biochemistry graduate student, I am constantly on the lookout for books which could help me in my research. When this particular book came out, I didn't have second thoughts in purchasing it and my decision was amply rewarded. I am greatly impressed by the way Dr. Hafiz Ahmed presented his work. The principles/theories are outlined followed by the step-by-step experimental procedures which are easy to follow. As I read the contents of each page, I couldn't help but feel that the author conceptualized the book in such a way that the end-user won't have any difficulty in conducting his research since each topic has a detailed description. This book is a valuable investment that every student/biochemist will be proud of.

5 out of 5 stars Great book! More geared to P-Chem students and students in Physics........2007-04-13

I'm a grad student in Physical Chemistry and from my point of view a great book! I can see how many students can rate this book as negative without the proper preperation. As a matter of fact most grad. Chem(organic, inorganic, analytical....) majors found this book and course to be very difficult. Lets face it Physical Chemistry and all of its sub-disciplanes ARE mathematical. To really appreiciate this book you need to be comfortable with single & multivariabe calculus, differential equations(basic understanding of seperation of varible, understanding how the solutions are applicable to the D.E.), basic linear algebra, and basic concepts of vectors. It's not that the math is difficult but you have to be comfortable with it. In addition, you need two semesters of undergaduate P.Chem. With this preperation this book makes perfect sense! It's geared more 4 grad. students or advanced undergrads. So if your in theoretical or physical chemistry, or any other physical science this is ur book. If you dont enjoy physics and its application to chemical systems stay away but definately an addition to ur library. Cant say enough.

1 out of 5 stars Not an entry level text.......2006-12-15

This book was assigned as the main text in my undergraduate structural biology course. I'm not sure what the professors expected; this book does not introduce material so much as it delivers a mathematical review of each of the concepts presented (thermodynamics, structure determination, and spectroscopic techniques).

Although I'm only an undergrad, I'm not sure how useful the book would be to more knowledgeable grad students. Chapters refer readers to equations found earlier in the book, making nonsequential reading a pain. Figures presenting data are taken from journal articles and their captions do a poor job of relating the data to the many equations in the text. Two professors in the course (in which different techniques were taught by different professors) commented that they found the sections of the book relating to their techniques (NMR and x-ray crystallography) confusing and poorly written.

I got through the class by shelving the book and heading to the library for better written text books.

If you're looking for a good introduction with a bit of math, I recommend checking out Physical Chemistry for the Life Sciences by Peter Atkins, Julio de Paula. It's not as advanced, but it'll clarify Principles of Physical Biochemistry quite a bit.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2006-03-22

The book offers a comprehensive review on biophysical chemistry with an emphasis on practice, although the book may not be clear for readers without good background...

1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE TEXTBOOK.......2005-05-06

I am a chem major at Duke University and we used this book in my biophysical chem class. The book is all around horrible. It doesn't introduce topics at all- just jumps right in and assumes an depth knowledge about chemistry, physics, biology. There are no sample problems worked out at all, and even though some answers are in the back of the text it's hard to know how they arrived at the answer without any examples to look at. The book is dense and difficult to read, and other books like Cantor and Schimmel are much more readable and helpful. This book presents all the topics, but still left me confused and not understanding the topics indepth enough.

1 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK.......2003-10-22

THIS BOOK IS A PIECE OF CRAP AND A WASTE OF TIME TO FIGURE OUT. I WOULD SUGGEST READING STUFF OFF THE INTERNET AND READING JOURNALS RATHER THAN WASTE TIME WITH THIS PIECE OF TOILET PAPER. I AM GONNA FLUNK THE CLASS CUZ OF THIS PEICE OF CRAP BOOK.

DONT BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Complete Solutions Manual in the Collectible Section is worth its weight in GOLD!.......2007-02-12

Hi everyone, I just got my exam score emailed to me from Physical Chemistry (the one with some calculus involved). Guess what? I got a 96%. The class average was 45%. The professor told me my exam had the highest score ever in this class.

I found that all the test had were problems from the book. I remember procrastinating and not getting any studying done. So the night before the exam, I just memorized all the solutions, and I got a 96%.

The professor told me to get an A in the class, all I need to do is get above a D on the next 2 exams. Man, what a relief. My friends envy me, my professor worships me, and I owe it all to this solutions manual.

I was at first skeptical about its price, but it was worth so much more. Can you put a price on getting an A? Can you? Can you really? Its going to be alot more than $120, which was how much I paid for the well-needed solutions manual.

I just hope too many students don't get the manual, because then professors might figure out that there is a solutions manual (my professor has NO IDEA THIS BOOK HAS A SOLUTIONS MANUAL!).

So if you do end up getting the manual, just use it for yourself, don't even show your friends or bring it to class. Just use it on your own, memorize the solutions, get your A+ in the class, tell all your friends and your professor that you just studied VERY HARD, and leave it at that.

The less the number of people that know about this solutions manual, the better. Also, since this was my first time using amazon.com, make sure that when you add the item to your card, the description should say "SOLUTIONS MANUAL." I bought it from the collectible section, and in the description it said that it was the "complete solutions manual."

Good luck in mastering physical chemistry;I won't need luck, I got the solutions manual!

5 out of 5 stars Get the SOLUTIONS MANUAL; Best decision I ever made in my ENTIRE LIFE. ONLY one in my class who got an A, let alone an A+.......2006-10-01

Hello mates,

I don't write any reviews, but when I got my first physical chemistry test back to day, I just had to write this out. THIS BOOK WAS IN THE COLLECTIBLE SECTION OF THE NEW AND USED SECTION. All my test had were questions from the book, and some that were very much like the book (only changed numbers). I procrastinated to study as usual, and all I did was study the solutions manual, and I was the ONLY STUDENT TO GET AN A+. THE ONLY ONE IN THE CLASS. My professor asked me to become a tutor, and now I'm getting paid.

All in all, physical chemistry is tough, BUT you WILL GET AN A with the solutions manual! You have my word, and my experience to prove it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Solutions Manual; Helped me get an A+ without much work!.......2006-09-29

When I received it, OH MY GOD, it had DETAILED ANSWERS to every single problem in the book. Whats more, my physical chemistry course had questions from the book on its test, and all I did was memorize the solutions and got an A+. I can't believe it!

I even corrected my professor on a few problems; my professor didn't even know there was a solutions manual and I wasn't about to tell him there was.

All in all, I just wanted to post my awesome experience. It was a great help. Just like in Physics, Chemistry, or biology, a solutions manual can only augment your skills. Plus it wasn't too long, about 100 pages.

Also, the other reviewer who said the solutions manual was bad must've bought another edition (older one), because the solutions manual I received had ALL THE SOLUTIONS to ALL THE PROBLEMS in COMPLETELY WORKED OUT form.

2 out of 5 stars someone really did only for the money or ...........2005-10-15

simply this book is terrible.

despite the impression the publisher wanna impose on the readers by citing the authors' notable teaching positions, it immediately loses whole credibility it tries to establish as a decent book by failing too soon in every respect, begining from the chapter 2.

i have read two other p.chem books and personally do not like the babish differential appoaches all of them give out invariably and rather forcing the concept that differential operators are "infinitesimal quantities." I understand that authors chose this crude and uber-ancient interpretation(along with other mathematical nonsenses) to reach the widest audience possible but this sort attempt makes the book fraught with confusing junks. And this particular book does not fail to follow this safe yet confusing approach. However, unlike other p.chem texts(at least for the atkin's and levine's) it abuses the mathematical notations and forces equations by ignoring constraints to come up with formulas. For example, to derive the partials of the extensive functions(chapter 4) it just intergrate all the different partials(dual base coeffients and its corresponding dual base) and somehow comes up with definite integrals. Anyone who took decent calculus class would know that the inverse map of the differential map is not that simple unless the variables are not related to each other. Other texts at least offer the constraints, although not explicitly(this subsequently makes the unwary readers oblivious about the specific conditions in which the pertaining equation is applicable).

anyhoo, the book is way too superflous with mathematical nonsenses and tries really hard to get rid of diffcult concepts by presenting concepts as "definitions." More frusrating than this is the fact that it completely lacks the proper motivation building-up before presenting particular concepts or formulas. Perhaps the authors of this book are truly convinced that all the future-biochemist/MD wanna-bes are faithful believers of the ubiquitous yet unspoken notion that all of our current scientific knowledges are nothing more than mere remnants of forcefully fed informations on a few chosen human beings many years ago despite their vehement refusals.

Just buy another p-chem book and use a good biochem text(such as voet's) instead of using this book. Making connection between the physical chemistry and biological science is not that difficult. If you can't you always got internet.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Book.......2005-09-23

This is an absolutely horrible textbook, derivations and applications of physical chemistry equations are poorly explained. Very few examples of how to use the equations provided. This text was required for my second year Phys Chem course, and did nothing but confuse me!
