Great text.......2007-07-03
This was an easy textbook to follow when I took my textiles class. It is very informative and interesting.
Excellent insight for Seamstress.......2004-07-09
I had been searching through all of the sewing books I could find to learn more about the nature of fabric and fibers...and everything I could possibly want to know was here, and more. Absolutely fascinating. It is a textbook, but was written clearly enough that anyone with an interest in the area can easily understand it. I've been teaching classes to costumers and members of the local American Sewing Guild, who are equally impressed with the knowledge we got from this book.
Connecting Textiles and Science.......2001-05-21
I use this book as the text for teaching a basic textiles course for sophmores. This text provides a sound foundation for students understanding the textiles and the science foundations that are the base for predicting textile performance. Every line is packed with information; there is no fluff in this book. If you want to understand WHY textiles and textile products perform in specific ways, this is the book to buy.
Book Description
This book is designed to introduce plastics to a wide range of non-chemists who need to either gain, improve, or refresh their knowledge of plastic materials and manufacturing. It fully discusses both materials and manufacturing processes in a carefully-constructed and logical presentation. While providing a fundamental overview of a broad spectrum of topics, this book’s high level of detail makes it valuable as a professional reference manual.
Complete examination of materials, processes and performance of plastics includes many recent developments–at the molecular, micro and macro levels–such as conductive polymers, nano technology, biodegradable polymers, bio-based raw materials, twin-sheet thermoforming, and health considerations of plasticizers.
Appropriate as a reference manual by manufacturing engineers, chemical engineers, plastics engineers, mechanical engineers, industrial engineers, or any other engineer working in a plastics-oriented company.
Customer Reviews:
Good for processing.......2003-04-04
This book is written a very understandable and readable style. It seems to be very good and thorough in the processing areas. There are a number of errors in the first few chapters on structure, so if you use this book you should supplement it with something else.
Excellent Resource for Many Reasons.......2002-02-25
From my particular perspective, Brent Strong's text on plastics is valuable because it is one of the very few places one can turn for a substantial discussion of high-energy radiation processing of plastics by means such as e-beams, microwaves, UV light, and plasmas. E-beam processing of plastics to impart commercially valuable improvements in their physical properties is especially well covered.
excellent book.......2001-08-21
I have used this book as a reference and for teaching a Plastics Course in Mechanical Engineering. It is very easy to read, it does not get into too much confusing details about the chemistry - it explains the chemical fundamentals very easily. It does a great job of relating plastic structures with actual properties such as permeability, strength and conductivity. All my students consider a great book. It is one of the best written books I have encountered during my academic career. Worth its weight in gold !!
Plastic: materials and processing.......2000-06-23
Very helpfull and usefull book for everyone who would like to know about plastic materials technology.

A concised and unified overview on soft matter.......2004-01-19
This book contains a concised overview on soft matter physics or what chemists use to call colloid chemistry. As stated by the author in the Preface, it has been written primarily for undergraduate students. However, it should be also useful to researchers that are looking for a unified view of the subject. The book is organized in five chapters: 1) Introduction, 2) Polymers, 3) Colloids, 4) Amphiphiles, and 5) Liquid crystals. Each chapter includes both FURTHER READING and QUESTIONS sections (numerical solutions to the questions are provided at the end of the book). All in all this quasi-pocket book appear to have reached its scope, I think, and hence I rated it with five stars. Readers that want to dig deeper into this subject may consult the book Soft Matter Physics: an Introduction, by Kleman and Lavrentovich (648 pp). Those wishing to take an intermediate step, may consult the recently published book Soft Condensed Matter by Jones (230 pp).

Terribly boring but useful.......2007-07-24
I had to get this book for my textiles class. The book is done in a rather boring format (it is pretty much just a reference book, what did I expect?!) but it was extremely useful for that class and for many more I have taken. Interesting tidbits throughout the book if you are at all interested in fashion and textiles.

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of polymers. Its target audience includes undergraduates in the areas of physical sciences and engineering, and industry professionals new to the field of polymers.
Special emphasis is given to the characteristics that set polymers apart from small molecules, as studied in classic chemistry courses. The various branches of polymer science are introduced and discussed in a systematic manner, starting from basic chemical structures, continuing through super molecular organization and physical properties. Specific examples are used throughout to illustrate how end usage relates to the principles under discussion. A series of chapters devoted to case studies describing the principal classes of synthetic polymers complete this book.

Customer Reviews:
I agree, the binding is very nice.......2006-03-20
However this edition is full of ERRORS! An extremely frustrating book to try to learn out of. Did i do it incorrectly or is the equation printed there wrong or is the answere printed over there wrong, or maybe the question itself has a typo......who knows! My professor for this class was familiar with the first edition, but agreed to go with the second edition after we (the class) found it for $4 on here, then he had to go through and correct all the mistakes for us.
A good book on Polymer Chemistry.......2003-12-09
I used this book in conjunction with my Physical Chemistry book when we had a section on macromolecules. The coverage of material I needed for my class was applicable, readable, and spelled out in a way that made it easy for me to understand the subject matter. I have also read through the book outside of my Physical Chemistry class, and I believe it is on the more readable side. The text has a good supply of worked out examples in the text, but sometimes falls short on practice problems. Most of my experience with this book comes from using it in conjuction with other books - this book really shines at its explanation of the subject matter.
The best part about this book is its beautiful binding........1999-06-26
This book does a very poor job of teaching polymer chemistry. Coverage of most topics is too brief and includes too many mistakes. However, the book is organized in an interesting way, and topics that aren't included in most polymer chemistry books are mentioned briefly -- for example interesting polymer properties such as flame retardancy. In this sense, the book might get students excited about polymer science.
