Jim Gatheral has done everyone in quant fin a service by gathering and organizing his lectures, practical execution issues, and experience in this welcome volume, The Volatility Surface: A Practitioner's Guide. This is simply an excellent, clear work that defies the logic that good valuable books in finance don't get written because authors make more money elsewhere. Compare Gatheral with the execrable collection of disjointed papers with Jarrow's name slapped on it (Volatility, Jarrow, et al,1998). This is the book they were trying to write, but it took a practitioner who had his hands dirty and worked hard to try to explain what he was doing to write it.

Topics are rolled out extremely well, and Gatheral dives right in to where practitioners swim: volatility isn't a single data point, or a smile, but a surface and needs to be thought of that way. In explicating the volatility surface and the possible explanations for shapes Gatheral raises the level of conversation for everyone in the field: this is the way we must think of volatility now (until something better comes along, but given the curse of dimensionality my guess is we will be here for a very long time).

This is an excellent, necessary book. Full disclosure: I am not an expert in this field and only have friends who are (many of them are editorial and AMAZON reader reviewers cited here). This book assists me in having interesting and comprehensible conversations with them, but if there are any flaws they likely would escape me. So far, my friends who are experts all agree: thank you Jim Gatheral, excellent job. Very helpful and well worth the money.

I found this book by Jim Gatheral very useful from a practical standpoint. His insight for trading applications is remarkable. I reccommend this book to any derivative trader to read from cover to cover. Its filled w/ useful tips and concepts that will save you and your firm from the many pitfalls that arise in marketers trying to satisfy their clients at the house's expense.

Managers should make this required reading for all traders.

Too often we see authors unnecessarily overcomplicate mathematics. Jim Gatheral on the other hand does the reverse. By taking a difficult subject and presenting in a wonderfully concise and pedagogic style he shares with the reader his deep knowledge of volatility. Such an important financial quantity which still appears to be shrouded in fear, Jim Gatheral uses his enviable blend of master practitioner and brilliant academic to combine both the real-world finance principles together with the underlying mathematics to demystify volatility.

The working is beautifully laid out, in a manner that is patient, friendly and approachable - and shows that quant finance need not look greek! This is the measure of a true genius!

As a teacher of mathematical finance, I have no hesitation in strongly recommending this book to students, researchers and practitioners in the field of derivatives.

The Volatility Surface is a MUST READ for anyone who desires a deep and practical understanding of the pricing and risk management of derivative claims. Thoughtful enough for academics but accessible to the practicioner. The picture on the back jacket is a masterpiece as well.

Applying models to the real world.......2006-11-13

The book is a great guide to understanding the different models used on Wall Street to capture the intricacies of modeling and pricing derivatives. The books focus of using models as a tool and NOT a solution is a great reminder to both traders and salespeople.
This summarized when the author describes the pricing of a digital cliquet.
"Those sellers using local Vol models will certainly value a digital cliquet at a lower price than sellers using stochastic volatility. Perversely then, those sellers using an inadequate model will almost certainly win the deal and end up short a portfolio of misvalued forward-starting digital options. OR even worse, a dealer could have an appropriate valuation approach but be pushed internally by the salespeople to match (mistaken) competitors' lower prices."

Magic book on Topology for educated commons.......2007-08-05

This is a great book for anyone who is interest in Mathematical Topology and Cosmology Topology. This book does not require a reader to have strong mathematics knowledge. It only requires a reader to have patience to think and solve some problems in the book. The most brilliant point in this book is using diagrams to illustrate the Topology concepts, such as Manifold. This help the reader to get a "feeling" of some really difficult concepts in Topology. This book should be a classic like "Flatland".

The joy of math.......2007-08-02

I have a bachelors degree in Math.

As Feynman said, what we really mean by math is careful reasoning. This book brings you the joy of careful reasoning, guided by an expert.

Perhaps what turns some people off math in school is that the supreme example of careful reasoning is the mathematical PROOF. (Or perhaps it's just that most math teachers are so poor.) A proof tends to look dull and ponderous on the outside, and a student can easily miss the beauty of the underlying ideas. On the other hand, for your own amusement you can figure something out to your own satisfaction, without necessarily constructing a watertight proof. This book helps you do just that.

Many newspapers contain Sudoku problems, often with the reassuring claim that no math is required! People who hated math in school can be seen working happily on Sudoku puzzles, for the sheer joy of exercising their ability to reason carefully. The same ability would bring them far more joy while reading this book and answering the puzzles/exercises spinkled throughout.

Excellent Introduction, No Assumptions.......2007-07-05

This text is non-intimidating as an introduction to topology. Weeks carefully guides the reader through the building blocks of torii, Moebius strips, projective planes, and other surfaces. After working appropriate exercises, the reader gets a chance to visualize 3-manifolds and connected sums. Some aspects of these two topics can be difficult to explain, but analogies are applied to make understanding attainable. Further, figures and illustrations exist throughout the text, and these are definitely helpful for visualizing connected sums and non-orientable surfaces (both one-sided and two-sided).

(I especially like the approach to the Gauss-Bonet theorem using double lunes. It is a carefully crafted derivation with plenty of illustrations to avoid confusion.)

Some may think this text is too simple, but it is a "must read" for anyone who has not encountered topology and who wants to do individual research on the topic. Many texts claim to be introductory texts, but they are actually designed for those who already have a degree in math and who have seen similar subject matter. However, this one is definitely for "newbies." So don't worry.

Interesting book.......2006-11-26

This is a painless way to learn some advanced topology--or at least to gain insight. It's almost a picture book. Most problems include solutions and require only a few minutes of thought. They are also worth solving.

Now that I understand what is meant be a certain topology of the cosmos, I'm astounded that anybody actually considers it possible. Fascinating.

Easy Reading.......2006-02-20

This is a very good book for people whom have a light background in math. It is a readable book and great introduction into manifolds and torus. As a mathematican I am amazed with the quality of material, examples, and thus provide one with the ability to understand the topics. I plan to use this book and some of its topics in future teachings. Thus I recommend this book for anyone especially for people who struggle with math.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

What I like most about this book is how she shows how multiple processes combine well to create some very stunning fabric art. Though not the most comprehensive of fabric books I've read, it is a very close--especially when it comes to the usage of dyes and discharge techniques. A fabric artist of any level will find much to keep them inspired by this book. The examples are dazzling. I also appreciate how she shows you how to make basic tools (stencils, silkscreen exposure setups) without necessarily having to buy something specifically for the technique she's describing.

If you are just getting into dyeing fabric or already have got your feet blue and orange and green from spills, this book holds lots of tips and tricks and just plain "how to". Dunnewold's book can be read and used as a reference or browsed and used as a stimulus for "what can I do today?" Organized well, straight forward text and good explanations. Get some dye and make your cloth complex...layers and layers and layers of lovely.

Terrific book and I've taken 4 of her classes. She keeps on coming up with ideas--enough for another book or two. This is an excellent resource and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in surface design on fabric.

This text is perfect for the reader who can read graphs and diagrams. A picture is worth a thousand words and so are graphs and diagrams. This text is chock full of graphs with all the information that you may need for an undergraduate or graduate course. I love this book. Its an excellent reference.

This book covers all aspects of Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) process technology from the characterizing and preparing the substrate material, through deposition processing and film characterization, to post depostion processing. The emphasis of the book is on the aspects of the process flow that are critical to economical deposition of films that can meet the required performance specifications.

The book covers subjects seldom treated in the literature: Substrate characterization, adhesion, cleaning and the processing. The book also covers the widely discussed subjects of vacuum technology and the fundamentals of individual deposition processes. However, the author uniquely relates these topics to the practical issues that arise in PVD processing, such as contamination control and film growth effects, which are also rarely discussed in the literature. In bringing these subjects together in one book, the reader can understand the interrelationship between various aspects of the film deposition processing and the resulting film properties. The author draws upon his long experience with developing PVD processes and troubleshooting the processes in the manufacturing environment, to provide useful hints for not only avoiding problems, but also for solving problems when they arise. He uses actual experiences, called "war stories:, to emphasize certain points. Special formatting of the text allows a reader who is already knowledgeable in the subject to scan through a section and find discussions that are of particular interest. The author has tried to make the subject index as useful as possible so that the reader can rapidly go to sections of particular interest. Extensive references allow the reader to pursue subjects in greater detail if desired.

The book is intended to be both an introduction for those who are new to the field and a valuable resource to those already in the field. If you are new to PVD as I am, you will find this book to be well worth the money. If the book doesn't give you enough details on what you are interested in, it will give you a ton of references to get you in the right direction. As a graduate student working on different PVD techniques including RF Sputtering, Thermal Evaporation, Electron Beam Evaporation, and Arc Deposition I use this book all the time. The only drawback is that it is huge but I liked it so much, I simply bought a copy for the lab and a copy for home.

So much, much more than I expected!!!.......2007-09-25

Others have already related the key points about this book. I just want to further confirm for everyone looking to buy it that this author really did an EXCELLENT job. She obviously is a art and TECHNICAL expert in this field. She could've taken less time and put out a book that would've gotten her a solid 4.5-star rating. Instead she obviously put in twice the time and ended up with a 10-star book. She gives you all the details that people serious about trying complicated crafts look for but rarely find without studying in the studio of a professional. I just picked this up from the NEW BOOKS rack at the library because I am generally interested in the subjected. Like the one person so far who has given her a lower rating, it did make me think that this is probably too difficult for me. But on the other hand, she has many photos showing the possibilities of what I might be able to accomplish if I did try and it's very seductive. Nothing very special worth accomplishing comes easily and that seems to also apply to fabric art. I also appreciate the thoughtfulness of her making the binding a spiral so the pages lay perfectly flat for easy reference while you follow the directions. If I decide to seriously try this craft, it will be this book that I buy and I doubt I'd even need to buy another one ever.

Holly Brackmann's new book The Surface Designer's Handbook is long over-due and I have ordered it as the textbook for all my fibers classes. As soon as it arrived my students all wanted their own personal copy so several of them purchased it outright just on sight alone. The spiral binding is excellent and the extent of the techniques covered is wonderful. I teach both beginners and advanced fibers students and this book has everything we need as a textbook.

I use it myself for my own work and find it very helpful, well organized and thorough. The information about making color cards with diluted MX dye on watercolor paper is worth the selling price all by itself. It is a technique I knew nothing about and I am thrilled to learn about it. It has saved hours and hours of dye testing time.

In my classes we had been using Kate Wells' book Fabric Dyeing and Printing and prior to that, Proctor and Lew's Surface Design for Fabric. Now, 16 years later, Holly's excellent book has arrived and is the handbook of the hour. It is up to date, comprehensive and thorough, and should be in everyone's library that works with dyes, textile paints and cloth. It improves on and surpasses every handbook published to date and encompasses a massive amount of information.

I look forward to using it in my classes for many years to come and I salute Holly for the enormous amount of work that went into creating this book. She has provided a gift for the entire surface design community both here and abroad.

I had hoped for a book that had practical suggestions for using surface design in mixed media and art quilt work. So much of this book is devoted to very technical dye processes that I find only a small portion of it is actually of help to me. If I wasn't already a bit afraid of dying my own fabric, I certainly am now!

Hi,
I am the author of this book. The first review in the list of five gives a glowing report and yet rates only one star! I feel that this is a mistake. All the other reviews give the book five stars. Not only is this book filled with beautiful color photographs and illustrations, it's packed with practical information for both beginner and advanced potters. Even non-potters who have an interest in pottery will find it an excellant source for understanding the the technical and aesthetic basics of surface decoration. As a potter and a pottery teacher, I find myself going back to the book frequently for information and ideas.

It delves into all aspects of potting, and not only illustrates the results that can be achieved, it provides the "how to" for many of the processes. This is an exciting book, it is not just about painting marks on surfaces. The list of options is quite comprehensive from liquid slips, clay colour modifications, carving, underglazes, slip-trailing, lustre-ware and of course impressions and incisions made by tools. Robin Hopper is a master of clay due to the years he has be absorbed by it. He has used good quality work by various potters to display the different forms of decoration.

Surface decoration is always something you need to think in advance about before making the piece. You need to be clear what you want to see in the end, these choices will affect how smooth you want the surface to be and of course the decoration needs to be a custom-fit aesthetically for each piece. Discourse about these matters is found throughout the book.

Glaze technology is discussed in this book, though not to the depth a total beginner would like - total knowledge could be gained in a technical course.

This is one of those books that you can keep using as your understanding grows depending on where you are. Always interesting and inspiring to read about other surace decoration forms gaining knowledge all the way.

This book would also be good as a guide in a set course, chapter by chapter you could do projects eg Chapt 1: Drawing, Chapt 2: Sign & Symbol, Chapt 3: Pattern & Space, Chapt 6: Marks of Slash, Scratch, Carve & Cut etc.

All in all, a wonderful storehouse of so many ideas to have at hand !

For the dabbler or those needing inspiration to try something new.......2005-07-09

While I'm relatively new to the art and craft of pottery, I beginning to find my own voice in my work. This book is helping me to think about differnet ways to express myself in my work. While I will probably never go out and buy a sand blaster or work with lusters, I know I have the inital reference source I need should I decide to go that way.

Possibly one of the most valuable (but not necessarily exciting sections) is his intial discussion of drawing and line. I come from a background of hard science (chemistry) and know little of formal art or the principles of "line." He explains why this is important and how to start thinking about it.

Finally, the book is a visual orgy. My husband (non potter) and I frequently sit and flip through the book to look at the examples of the various works. It becomes intoxicating. We can sit and discuss what makes one peice have that "come hither" look while another, while technically excellent, has little or no appeal to us. It has become a spring board for me in terms of astectics.

While this book will not teach you how to sand blast or give you important clues about the proper layering of airbrushed glazes, it will help you think about all of the different types of marks you can make on clay and choose the ones that call to you.

Most popular textbook on Differential geometry. Feynman once said the most popular one may not be the best, which is not completely true here. If you want another view of differential geometry, Su Buqing's Lectures on Differential Geometry is a great little book.

Best DG book out there.......2005-04-21

This book is rather expensive, but when compared to the other books available, it is not a waste of your money. It has plenty of exercises, many of them with answer or hints in the back of the book, and its exposition is broad, very clear and concise.

It is hard to tell being a math student, but I think anyone with a solid knowledge in multi-variable calculus (Apostol's book would be perfect) or, better yet, who has taken multi-variable analysis course would find this book accessible. One of the advantages of this book is that it is self-contained, so even though it uses, for example, the inverse function theorem (which is something unavoidable for a DG book), it has an appendix on differentiability and continuity which covers this.

The exercises range from easy to very hard, but because of the exposition and of the way the exercises are stated (the tougher ones are many times itemized so that they drive you to the answer) it is rare to find a problem that the reader will not be able to solve upon a little thinking.

The greatest advantage of this book is its clear and well-written exposition. It has very few errors, mostly typographical. It covers a lot of topics and its notation is extremely simple and suggestive, which, believe me, is of great help in a DG book. In short, if you want or have to learn differential geometry, save your time and get this book. As another reader very intelligently put it, there is a reason why this is a classic.

There is a reason why it is a classic........2005-04-03

Before talking about the book itself, let me tell you that I am a mathematician, and when I took a differential geometry course and used do Carmo's book, I already knew I wanted to be a mathematician. So, is this a book for mathematicians? Well, yes, but not exclusively. It is certainly written from a mathematician's point-of-view, and it assumes some maturity on the part of the reader. For instance, the exercises contain very little in the way of drill, and are used to enhance the theory (as pointed out by another reviewer). It seems to me that the author believes that mature readers can provide their own `drill' exercises. So, you won't find many exercises asking for you to find pricipal curvatures for this or that surface, and that other as well; exercises in this book have a theoretical flavor to them. This, of course, makes for some hard exercises, and I do remember spending a lot of time over them, often working together with other students taking the same course. The upside is that we learned the material, and thoroughly. Also, the author provided plenty, plenty of examples. The figures are very well drawn and really allow you to see what is going on - even though these days, with powerful computer packages like Maple, Mathematica, Matlab, and others, any student can provide his/her own pictures. But just because now we can use computers, I wouldn't say the text shows signs of age. It is jus as clear now in its exposition of topics and concepts as it was many years ago. So, even though there are many good alternatives in the market, if I had to teach a course now on this subject, or even better, if I were a student now taking this subject, I would certainly have this book at the top of my list of possible textbooks.

engineers should get another book.......2005-03-16

If you are a mathematician this book probably suits your purposes, BUT if you are an engineer (interested in shell structures for instance) I would recommend "Elementary Differential Geometry" by Pressley.
This book focuses on many sub-topics that are not of interest to an engineer and many of the exercises are abstract and of very little practical value. Also "Elementary Differential Geometry" focuses more on real 3-D shapes and their properties, and thus it is more readable.

Very Difficult.......2004-01-22

Although some claim it is classic, don't expect it to be readable. The book's definitions cna be quite confusing, and it is often difficult to understand many of the definitions or problems without a great deal of effort. If you are using this book for a class, I would reccomend getting a more readable text for reference.

Looking for something extra.......2007-10-05

If your looking to do something different with your polymer clay, then this is the book for you. I love all the different methods Donna Kato talks aout, and she writes so well, it is so easy to read, and she makes you feel like it is the easist thing in the world. I love just looking at the images in this book as well. The only thing I would say I don't like about this is book, is that several of the projects are japanease style, but this doesn't make any difference bcuase you can create whatever designs you want to. If you thinking about a polymer clay book-to extend your knowledge then don't hestiate to buy this one!

I just started working with polymer clay a few weeks ago and wanted a book that logically explains techniques as well as offering good photography. Being a librarian and fiber artist, I HAVE to have my own library of art/craft books for reference and inspiration. Kato's is one of the best I have for any media. It's well written and organized and the photos are inspiring. I highly recommend this book for any polymer clay artist or library wanting to add a high quality book to a crafts collection.
