Handbook of Stochastic Methods: for Physics, Chemistry and the Natural Sciences (Springer Series in Synergetics)
ASIN: 0444893490 |
Book Description
This new edition of Van Kampen's standard work has been completely revised and updated. Three major changes have also been made. The Langevin equation receives more attention in a separate chapter in which non-Gaussian and colored noise are introduced. Another additional chapter contains old and new material on first-passage times and related subjects which lay the foundation for the chapter on unstable systems. Finally a completely new chapter has been written on the quantum mechanical foundations of noise. The references have also been expanded and updated.
Customer Reviews:
Utility and Clarity.......2003-08-30
Van Kampen is that rare book that has enormous utility while being very clear and readable. It is perfectly suitable for sitting down and reading; the ideas flow together in a seamless way. Yet if you need to use it as a reference, you can flip to the appropriate page and the ideas will still be clear! It's amazing to me how Van Kampen manages to have the topics of the book stand alone, yet be woven together in such a logical, and even pedagogical, way.
This book is recommended for anyone working in statistical physics and is a must for anyone studying nonequilibrium phenomena in chemisty or physics. Even moreso than Kubo's excellent book on nonequilbrium statistical mechanics, this is the most clear and complete volume.
A Classic.......2000-04-03
Van Kampen's book is a must-have for anyone interested in stochastic processes. The presentation is masterful and there are numerous thought-provoking examples and exercises. The author's remarks on "abuse" of methods (such as the Langevin technique) are well worth understanding, even if one does not agree with him in all cases. The price is a bit steep which is unfortunate since this book is really ideal for advanced undergraduates and graduate students.

Book Description
This popular and well-established reference on two-phase flows, boiling, and condensation is now available in paperback. `Convection Boiling and Condensation' is written primarily as an aid to heat exchanger design and is in its third edition. The first two editions of the book were widely adopted in industry, by design and development engineers, and also as a graduate text for students studying this area. The third edition covers the new advances made since the last edition in 1982, and significantly extends coverage to include new problems after each chapter to enhance its use as a text.
Customer Reviews:
A renewed fundamental book.......2000-08-08
Possibly the single problem with the original version of "Convective Boiling and Condensation" by J.G. Collier was that it was getting too old. After the update made in the last versions with the work by J.R. Thome, the book has been renewed recovering the role of a fundamental textbook to be considered for both teaching and research. It is full of the best explanations you can find about several basic heat transfer mechanisms and provides precious suggestions for further reading and more in depth study. A nice book indeed.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for the newbie.......2005-11-19
This book is one of the few books I have found on the topic of two phase flow which gives good, concise physical models that correspond to the mathematical theory.
Excellent introductory book for studying Two Phase Flow.......1996-06-29
There are very few books written exclusively focussing on Two Phase flow, and this is one of the very good books on that subject. It caters the interest of Mechanical engineers in large and also Chemical engineer

Customer Reviews:
Has things over BSL.......2007-02-25
This is one of the few texts that treats karman number analysis of fluid flow. Also like unit op by g.g.brown, it covers flow through porous media which BSL doesn't. Over all this text is better in application than BSL while being as rigorous.
OK for a review of the material.......2000-02-13
The focus of this book is on the mathematics of transport phenomena with little regard to applications or accessibility to students. A broad range of topics are condensed into a single book that reads like the hastily prepared lecture notes of the professors. The poor quality of the typesetting, figures and illustrations is frustrating - making the reading process painfully arduous. This is probably the last book I would turn to for information on the subjects listed in the title (most of which is better covered in the 1960's classic Transport Phenomena by Bird, et. al.).
It was boring as paint drying.......1999-10-07
This book was extremely dry. The subjects brought up in the book had no real applications and was only pleasing to those whose fun time is filled with boundry layer equations and diffusion of dilute gases in my butt.

Book Description
Combustion technology has traditionally been dominated by air/fuel combustion. However, two developments have increased the significance of oxygen-enhanced combustion - new technology producing oxygen less expensively and the increased importance of environmental regulations. Advantages of oxygen-enhanced combustion include numerous environmental benefits as well as increased energy efficiency and productivity. The text compiles information about using oxygen to enhance high temperature industrial heating and melting processes - serving as a unique resource for specialists implementing the use of oxygen in combustion systems; combustion equipment and industrial gas suppliers; researchers; funding agencies for advanced combustion technologies; and agencies developing regulations for safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly combustion systems. Oxygen-Enhanced Combustion: o Examines the fundamentals of using oxygen in combustion, pollutant emissions, oxygen production, and heat transfer o Describes ferrous and nonferrous metals, glass, and incineration o Discusses equipment, safety, design, and fuels o Assesses recent trends including stricter environmental regulations, lower-cost methods of producing oxygen, improved burner designs, and increasing fuel costs Emphasizing applications and basic principles, this book will act as the primary resource for mechanical, chemical, aerospace, and environmental engineers and scientists; physical chemists; fuel technologists; fluid dynamists; and combustion design engineers. Topics include: o General benefits o Economics o Potential problems o Pollutant emissions o Oxygen production o Adsorption o Air separation o Heat transfer o Ferrous metals o Melting and refining processes o Nonferrous metals o Minerals o Glass furnaces o Incineration o Safety o Handling and storage o Equipment design o Flow controls o Fuels
