Thanks very much!.......2007-07-05
It's a great edition of the book, and I appreciate it very much! I'm very happy with the shipping and condition of the book, and it was great overall!
not the product I ordered.......2007-04-03
I wanted to order the book, but when I recieved it, it was the wrong edition! Thanks for the honesty!
Well Written.......2007-01-05
The book was used for 90% of my class. It well written for the student with little exposure to chemistry. The pictures and diagrams could have better depicted the subject matter. The price was $40 less than what my college bookstore charges. Great value.
Excellent Textbook.......2006-04-19
This is an excellent textbook for a two semester course in General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry for Health Professions. It does a very good job of explaining the concepts of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry. It also has excellent applications on disease processes and pathophysiology. The organization of each chapter is a plus. I highly recommend this textbook. It is number one!
Excellent Book on Physiological Chemistry.......2006-03-05
This book is exactly as described by the publisher. A very readable overview of general and organic chemistry. A comprehensive study of the organic molecules and chemical processes specific to the human body.
I liked this book so much that I'm ordering a hardcover copy to replace my original paperback edition.

Amazing Read.......2006-11-20
I have to admit that this is the most interesting books I've ever read. If you want to know how the basics of life all tie together and form the world and existance around you then this is for you. This book has seriously opened up the world to me. I cannot look at anything around me like I used to. I recommend getting and reading this book solo. The way it is written makes it perfectly understandable without a teacher or professor of any kind. Everything is spelled out clearly with simple everday comparisons and examples. There are a ton of useful problems to work on to assist in cementing your knowledge in place. Seriously though I really can't think of any other book I've ever read that was more interesting than this one. Pick it up and prepare to see your world unfold in front of you as a new and chaotic, complex and beautifully organized universe.

General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry 3rd Ed (Student Text)
ASIN: 0618606068 |
Book Description
This text, aimed at nursing and other allied health majors, boasts a clear, comprehensible writing style and a pedagogical approach that is easy to apply and use. The early chapters of the text focus on fundamental chemical principles. Later chapters, built on the foundation of these basic principles, develop the concepts and applications central to the fields of organic chemistry and biochemistry.
The development of chemical topics always starts at the ground level. Complicated mathematics is minimized and used only when it helps clarify a topic. The text's pedagogy is supported by strong graphics, features that help students learn and retain material, and rich problem sets.
- New! The Student CD-ROM features a student math review that covers the prerequisite mathematics relevant to this course.
- New! The HM ClassPrep CD-ROM features everything an instructor needs to develop lectures. This cross-platform CD includes PowerPoint slides with all text figures, tables, and virtually all photos; Animations and simulations from the Hart, Organic Chemistry, 11/e and Zumdahl, Chemistry, 6/e CD-ROMs; "Chemistry at a Glance" sections; The Instructor's Resource Manual in PDF format; Word files of the printed Test Bank
- New! The text's art program has been thoroughly revised to help students better visualize the molecular world. The text includes many space-filling models that more closely match what students see in multimedia resources. Reactions are conveniently color-coded in the organic chapters.
- New! Every chapter now includes new "Additional Problems," giving current users a fresh selection and expanding the range of difficulty in this popular problem category.
- New! Additional "Chemistry at a Glance" sections provide brief visual summaries of core chapter concepts to help students visualize difficult material.
- New! Additional "Chemical Connections" boxes show chemistry as it relates to everyday life, highlighting its relevance to careers in the health and environmental fields.
- New! The author reviewed and improved coverage of the following topics to make the new edition as current as possible: Solubility of solutes in water; Chemical effects of radiation; Oxidation and reduction as applied to organic molecules; Dietary considerations and carbohydrates; Dietary considerations and fats and oils; Classification of lipids in terms of function; Classification of proteins in terms of structural characteristics; Functions for vitamins; Protein synthesis and human genome project results; Genetic engineering; Oxidative phosphorylation and ATP production
- Chapter outlines give students a road map of what is covered in each chapter.
- In-text worked-out examples walk students through the thought process involved in problem solving. A "Practice Exercise" follows each example to reinforce concepts.
- "Margin Notes" provide tips for remembering and distinguishing between concepts, highlight links across chapters, and present interesting historical background.
- "Defined Terms" are highlighted in the text when they are first presented, using boldface and italic type. Each definition appears in a complete sentence so students are never forced to deduce a definition from context.
- A glossary offers definitions of all key terms in the index.

A very solid text!.......2003-08-28
I'm a computer guy working at a biotech and wanted to know more about what the guys in the coats are doing. This book is a very good introduction for those with a science bent.
I especially enjoyed reading about the Bohr model of the atom (which is what I learned in school) only to have it totally dissed after 3/4ths of a page as inadequate!
I don't know how well it works as a class room text (this is night-time reading for me) but for a enjoyable well written text on Biochemistry this is an excellent choice.

Customer Reviews:
This book is crap.......2005-09-27
Ok, I will be clear that I am not reviewing this exact book, but the purely organic chemistry book that is a 1991 version that I got at the library. I have never actually taken organic chemistry. I was hoping to get a leg up, and this was the only book at the library on it, so I checked it out. And I am finding it terribly lacking in explanation. It is all problems and little explanation. It takes one paragraph and one example to explain something, which isnt enough to cover all aspects of the topic to where one can understand it, then it proceed to give you problems that you cant really work, but you follow through them and try to understand why they work, and most of the time there is a short explanation as to why the answer is the correct one. There are handy little charts here and there that make things a little easy, although it needs more. I have been able to grasp most of the information due to this book, but there are key topics that are recurring that I dont fully understand and it doesnt matter how much I read that one paragraph, I dont fully get it. Afterwards I went online to clear up the discrepencies, and I easily got it. From the review here, it sounds like this book is better than taking the class. I hope that is not the case. But I can tell you from the standpoint of someone that has never studied organic chemistry, but has taken general chemistry, this book is insufficient as a textbook.

If you love O. Chem... what's wrong with you?!.......1998-04-04
I have found the Schaum's Review series very helpful both in review and in independent study, especially for Organic Chemistry. Many times, chemistry students fail to learn key concepts not because they are incomprehensible (thankfully) but rather because they were either explained badly or simply explained in a way that does not make sense to a student. This book explains all the key concepts and includes almost 2000 problems to make sure you understand O. Chem. clearly even if you're so sick of it you're comtemplating shoving an Erlenmyer full of benzene down your professor's Organic throat. Buy it, and save your sanity.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Introduction to Chemistry.......2005-12-28
This was my first time studying Chemistry, and the book was excellent.
It's intended to students in the health field (ie nursing), and their applications are wonderful.
A little heavy on the exercises, but better too much than too little. It would do well to include more answers to the practice questions, but that's how they get you to buy the Study Guide. Oh well.
Great introduction to chemistry..........2003-01-06
this is an excellent introductory chemistry textbook....
it is great for the last year of highschool.. or for bridging from highschool to unviersity..
it isn't that deep enough for most first year chemistry courses... but reading through this book before OR while you are in ur first year course will greatly help you understand the material... because this book doesn't assume u know a lot about the subject already...
cuz face it guys... nobody tries to remember stuff in highschool.. i personally just wanted to get it over with... therefore I forgot everything ...... but in university ur mentality changes.. u actually want to learn.. not just get 90 and get it over with.. that's why I bought this the summer before my classes started.. and went through it a little everyday...
well my First Year class used Raymond Chang's CHemistry book (more advanced than this one) ... but I found it much easier, because I reviewed during the summer... and when I hit a topic that was hard.. i would reference this book.. read it.. then go back to Chang's and read the material... this helped a lot because this book assumes no previous knowledge....
so it's good for ppl like me.. for the few out there who actually cared in highschool.. and remember nething... this book is a waste.. because it isn't deep enough for first year chem courses (it is deep enough for non science major chem courses.. but not the hardcore first year general chem course)
hope this helps
Life saving personal tutor.......2002-08-25
I recently took chemistry part II after not having chemistry for several years. This book was a life saver. I was able to pull many examples from it to guide me when I did my homework. Chemistry is tough enough by itself, but this book really helped. All the answers are there so you can test yourself on one part, and then see the answers with explinations on another part. Everything was easy to understand in this book. I highly recommend this Study Guide. This Study Guide will save you a lot of time at the tutor, and keep you from pulling your hair out while figuring out chemistry.
Chemistry by Karen C. Timberlake.......2000-03-11
This is an excellent book. I tutor students who are going into the allied health professions, and some have never had chemistry before now. The chapters are clearly written with sample problems after each topic and end-of-chapter problems. I refer to it for exercises for my students. It is the best that I have found so far.

Book Description
A whole new twist on General, Organic and Biological Chemistry!
Introducing a unique approach, with a whole new twist designed for the specific needs of the General, Organic, and Biochemistry course! Kenneth Raymond's General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry offers a concise, manageable, highly effective alternative with an integrated Table of Contents. Now, students can get to the biochemistry topics earlier, better appreciate how the course relates to careers in allied heath, and see connections among these three areas of chemistry.
Here's how Raymond's approach works:
1. Integration.
The text presents interrelated topics from general, organic, and biochemistry in the same or adjacent chapters. This highly integrated approach reduces excess review, and enables students to explore biochemical topics earlier in the course. The result is a briefer, more focused, and more engaging text.
2. Applications.
Raymond takes a very applied approach, filled with real-life examples that effectively connect the chemistry to future careers in health-related fields. Chapter-opening vignettes focus on the link between chemistry and everyday topics.
3. Relevance.
