Customer Reviews:
Ok, but nothing extra.......2007-05-31
Current price does not correspond to the quality level of the book if one compare it other literature in Chemistry. It is ok, though, especially if one haven't read any chemistry prior to this book and at the same time focuses on the hazards connected to handling chemicals in general.
A new way of looking at chemistry.......2006-12-07
This was required for a chemistry class. However, it was generally an easy read for grad school and presented a new way of looking at chemistry.
Good, could be better.......2005-12-29
I took a graduate level class with this as the textbook. It is a great reference and does a good job explaining regulations. The problems and the examples need to be more clear. I guess what I'm saying is the complex problems, such as oxidation-reduction reactions, are explained too briefly. Other than that, I enjoyed using the book for the class.
good refresher/DOT reference.......2000-04-12
This is a well organized and indexed fire science text which is a useful reference for anyone who works with hazardous materials on a daily basis. It explains DOT regulations and how the regs are actually related to the chemistry of the materials. It explains the chemistry behind proper transport, handling, and storage of most major commodity chemicals and offers guidlines for emergency planning and response. The author does a good job of introducing/reviewing the concepts of chemistry with a clear focus on reactions which can lead to disaster. Two flaws: the writing is repetative, at times you can sense that the author/editiors were a bit tired of the text or in a hurry to get it to the press. The illustrations are O.K. but the black and white photos are AWFUL. Mr. Meyer, if you read this, go back and re-do all the photos for the next edition. I work at a RCRA TSDF and have found the text very useful for myself and our new employees who have studied chemistry but do not have a firm grasp of DOT and fire safety.

Book Description
Detailed, up-to-date coverage of hazardous materials and situations
Lack of awareness about hazardous materials poses a major problem, causing many needless injuries and losses of property. Incomplete awareness presents just as big a problem; often people who have contact with such materials know just enough to feel safe while actually putting themselves and others in great danger. Though regulatory agencies have provided written standards, rarely do these on their own offer the commonsense advice needed to properly evaluate and handle hazardous materials.
Hazardous Materials Characterization: Evaluation Methods, Procedures, and Considerations provides detailed coverage of hazardous materials and situations. Plain language and a common- sense approach make this an accessible resource for use by all workers who handle and deal with these materials.
Written according to the latest regulations and best practices, this guide groups related materials together for quick and easy access (corrosive, ignitable, radioactive, etc.). It also details methods and procedures for evaluating the properties and strengths of questionable materials, as well as what reactive substances and situations to look out for when working with these materials.
Other topics covered include:
- Regulatory review
- Sampling and monitoring equipment, applications, and procedures
- Human health hazards
- Biological hazards
- Radiation hazards
- Evaluating chemical and biological terrorist threats
- Environmental remediation methods
- References and resources
Packed with the most up-to-date information on hazardous materials and written to maximize accessibility, Hazardous Materials Characterization is a vital reference for all those whose work involves hazardous materials.
Download Description
This book provides information that is useful for those required to handle potentially dangerous materials. Even though regulatory agencies have provided written standards for working with dangerous substances, we rarely obtain regulations that provide readers with common sense concepts. This work is a valued resource that is easy to use and easy to understand. The commonsense approach is greatly stressed throughout the book. Topics are presented so that they can be used by all hazardous materials workers, especially those involved in chemical emergency action and response. The subject matter is user friendly, for persons needing information regardless of whether they are laypeople, chemists or workers that handle dangerous materials. Methods and procedures for evaluating the properties and strengths of questionable substances are also included. Information is presented in groupings or as families of dangerous materials. Reactive materials and situations that cause dangerous conditions are also covered. The latest regulatory directives relating to hazardous materials handling are referenced as they apply.

Book Description
The second edition of The Soil Chemistry of Hazardous Materials has been extensively revised and updated since the first edition. The text reflects the state of the science. Much is known about some areas and very little about others. Nevertheless, there is a great deal that is misunderstood about the behavior of chemicals in soil: One of the author's principal objectives in publishing the work is to dispel commonly held misconceptions and correct misapplications; over 100 have been identified and outlined in this edition. The Soil Chemistry of Hazardous Materials is devoted to providing scientists and professionals with a basic knowledge of the principles t hat govern the proper estimation of migration and degradation potential of chemicals in topsoil, and in the saturated and unsaturated zones. These principles apply to chemical behavior in solid and hazardous waste treatment and disposal units employing or impacting soil and other geologic materials--landfarms, landfills, deep well injection systems, compost piles, and sites affected by leaks, spills, and other types of accidental or deliberate chemical releases. A substantial amount of new knowledge concerning the basic nature and properties of soil, the behavior of water in the unsaturated zone, and the behavior of bulk hydrocarbons in soils appear only in this edition. Examples include a discussion of NAPL's and how they move in the subsurface and treatment technologies such as bioremediation, metal stabilization, and permeable walls. Because the focus is on practical applications of these basic chemistry principles, the text incorporates information from other soil science and environmental disciplines where appropriate.

Book Description
The indispensable resource for health professionals on potentially unsafe chemicals--now fully updated
Proctor and Hughes' Chemical Hazards of the Workplace, Fifth Edition provides a comprehensive reference text for health professionals who need toxicology data on chemicals that may be encountered in various work settings. Building on the success of the Fourth Edition-already a standard text-this new edition updates and revises the more than 600 entries of that text, and also adds monographs on new compounds.
Introductory chapters cover toxicological concepts, clinical manifestations of exposure, the diagnosis of occupational disease, and industrial hygiene aspects of chemical exposures. The rest of the text consists of more than 625 alphabetically arranged entries on individual compounds, each of which includes:
* Chemical formula
* CAS number
* 2003 ACGIH (American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists) threshold limit value
* Synonyms
* Physical properties
* Sources of exposure
* Routes of exposure
* Toxicological data
The toxicological data includes both acute and chronic effects, especially as related to any known exposure levels. The data emphasizes human studies and cases over animal data whenever sufficient information is available, and addresses any known carcinogenic, mutagenic, fetotoxic, or other reproductive effects. Clinical information is presented in a succinct narrative form to aid in understanding.
Easy to use, in-depth, and comprehensive, Proctor and Hughes' Chemical Hazards of the Workplace, Fifth Edition offers occupational health physicians, nurses, industrial hygienists, and other safety professionals an invaluable and up-to-date resource.

Book Description
The second edition of a bestseller, Hazardous Materials Chemistry for Emergency Responders continues to provide the fundamentals of "street chemistry" required by emergency response personnel. The information presented will assist you in responding to specific chemical spills, including identifying the exact chemicals involved and their individual hazards. The chapters are organized by the nine U.S. Department of Transportation's hazard classes. Within each class, the author discusses individual chemicals that are commonly involved in emergency situations along with their physical and chemical characteristics. Additionally, each chapter addresses the multiple perils of hazardous materials, including "hidden" hazards. The top 50 hazardous industrial chemicals are considered throughout the book, together with other hazardous materials. The author also provides incident reports and statistics to underscore the effects that specific chemicals can have on incident outcomes. Furthermore, he delves into the timely concern of dealing with chemical and biological terrorist agents. This information is extremely valuable in your daily work for the health and safety of yourself and those who rely on you. Hazardous Materials Chemistry for Emergency Responders, Second Edition offers a concise presentation of the topics of most importance. The subject matter is written to be appropriate for response personnel without a strong chemistry background by conveying the information in understandable terms. This book will familiarize you with the basic chemistry a responder needs to understand chemical terminology and communicate with others about the chemicals involved in hazardous materials incidents.
