Book Description

Curly girls of the world unite! Sixty-five percent of women have naturally curly hair, but for too long too many of these women have either been at a loss on how to care for their hair properly or, worse, have gone through life pretending they have straight hair. No more. Lorraine Massey, a professional hairstylist and passionate proponent of curly hair, celebrates the curly girl way of life, from hair care to carefree attitude.

Beginning with The Curly Girl's Twelve-Step Program (Step Three: I will accept that the scalp and hair are two different entities with completely different needs, and I will treat them accordingly), CURLY GIRL is an illustrated how-to, support group, and tongue-in-cheek manifesto all in one.

There are tips on shampoo (never daily), conditioners (use lots), drying, combing (only when wet and well-conditioned), styling, getting the right cut, and how to Heal Thy Hair after years of strong detergents and damaging blow-dryers. There are before-and-after photographs, Curly Cues, self-help tests, confessions from curly girls, advice to take to your stylist. And for girls seeking their inner curl, compassion and encouragement to let their hair break free-and to put the fear of frizz behind them forever.

Because from now on there's no such thing as a bad hair day.

4 out of 5 stars Best I've Come Across.......2007-10-05

I thought I was well-versed when it came to curly hair tips and tricks and what-have-you, but this is a valuable read with new insights. Pointers that WORK. I have often wished that there were magazines for curly haired girls at the hair dressers, because I never know how to describe the cut or style I want, and Curly Girl is basically it. Priceless suggestions.

5 out of 5 stars Curly hair .......2007-09-28

Really good book for curly hair and for those wanting to use more natural hair products. Made a huge difference in my wavy/softly curled hair. Much nicer hair now .

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-08-28

It turns out I'm not a curly or even wavey girl, but this book taught me so much. I found better products that were better for my scalp. I did pass this book on to my neice. She has natural cork screw curls. When I first told her about the book, she would skip days of washing, after I gave her the book, she's followig everything and loves having more control over her wild curls. It's helped her with her daughters hair too.

5 out of 5 stars This advice changed my life.......2007-08-28

I hate to sound so shallow but it's true. I used to really hate my hair and I was getting to the point where I was actually beginning to accept that I was never going to be able to get my head of super tight curly hair to do anything that would ever look good. My hair lived in a ponytail everyday. Then, almost out of a last stitch effort, I discovered the "curly girl" book on amazon, that lead me to visit Lorraine Massey's Devachan salon in NYC and from then on my hair problems were solved. Now I use only two hair products: DevaCurl One conditioner and the Angell styling gel. I care for my hair exactly the way Massey suggests ...and I'm telling you that my hair is healthy and looks great! If you have curly hair I can't recommend this enough...go out and buy the curly girl book and find out what products you should be using and how you should be taking care of your hair. And if you can, I highly highly suggest visiting a Devachan salon....even once...they will teach you in person how care for your curls and I promise you that your hair will look better than it ever has before!

5 out of 5 stars Finally the truth on curly hair!.......2007-08-16

I hate my hair, along with all the other curly hair people in this world. But after reading this book and following all the product dos and don'ts and tips, I'm starting to LOVE my curls. After just 4 days, my hair feels and looks healthy. I have received alot of compliments and that's just because I stopped shampooing my hair. Give this book a try, I promise you won't be dissappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Chock full of actual recipes. Does have hippie "tone.".......2007-06-21

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. A lot of beauty recipe books are chock full of information on why natural recipes are good, and then they contain very few actual recipes. This book is chock full of recipes that actually DO use natural ingredients as stated. It also educates you about modifying recipes without being too technically complicated (unlike a lot of soapmaking books.) The book does have a bit of a hippie bent and sometimes takes itself a little too seriously with statements that actually end up being unintentionally humorous. That's not really to be unexpected with this "genre" though, and overall I feel like I got a great value for the purchase price of the book.

Some acne sufferers might find her advice to wash your face with oil a bit naive (I've often heard such advice from people who haven't had to deal with acne much to start with), but it was interesting to learn that this technique does involve cleansing the oil off right away -- which isn't often explained or included in other sources that cite this home remedy.

Helpful lists of ingredient vendors (with contact info) are also included in the back of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Base recipes and directions..........2007-03-31

I like the base recipes and directions however I find the layout of the book frusterating. I wish that the directions were in each section instead of in their own section in the back of the book. You end up when you are trying something new flipping back and forth between your recipe and the directions. But once you get down the basics its good...some of the recipes are a lil unrealistic as the ingredients are somewhat difficult to find at least in my area but as I said I like that I have a base point to start from with this book its one of the better ones ive found and quite a bit more up to date than alot of the others out there.

5 out of 5 stars Book for Natural & Personal Care.......2007-01-15

Very fast shipping, book in great shape - easy to do business with.

5 out of 5 stars Great Recipes.......2007-01-10

This book is full of great recipes. The author doesn't waste any space. There are recipes for almost anything you'd want to make. Buy this book. It is worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars natural remdies.......2007-01-04

The book is well done, has good information about the house manufacturing of high quaality hair care and skin care products.
I enjoy making my own recipies and I had great success with some acnee problems. The hair rinses that I made are excellent and keep on making and using them. My girlfriends love it too.

5 out of 5 stars In-Depth Information.......2006-10-24

This book is great for understanding how to shape a brow that best suits your face. I believe it is intended for use as a text book in cosmetology and esthetics courses, but it provides great in-depth information for styling your brows. If you're seriously interested in learning what styles and shapes suit your face type this is the book for you. I was thourougly satisfied.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2006-10-12

This book was a huge disappointment. It was very basic and very vague. For example, it would tell you to shape the brow to make their face look longer or shorter, but it wouldn't tell you how to shape the brow in order to do that. All the pictures were small, in black and white, and it was hard to see any detail. I kept on reading on, hoping that I was going to get to the good stuff, but the good stuff never came. I truly felt like I learned nothing and it was supposed to be an instructional book. A waste of money. I was debating returning it, but it doesn't seem worth it to go to the post office and have to pay for shipping it back.

5 out of 5 stars The best book ever written on eyebrow design.......2005-01-06

This eyebrow book is the best educational
material on the market.
After you have read the book do your career a favor and
take the test provided with the book.
I personally learned so much from this book and I am a
professional in the field of Permanent Makeup. In my opinion
this is a must read book for anyone in the field of makeup.
This is a book you'll keep in your personal library for years to come.
All we can do for now is wait for the next book from this talented author.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good stuff but missing stuff.......2007-09-03

I really liked this book; however I wish there were more recipes for like soaks for pedicures & manicures & baths.

3 out of 5 stars OK for beginners.......2007-04-09

The book has some interesting ideas and recipes but it covers mostly what is already widely known. Also in the recipes it does not clearly specify which facial preparations are going to be non-greasy day creams or greasy night ones.
I expected to find some make-up recipes but they aren't in the book.
Generally it is a good book for a beginner.

1 out of 5 stars Do your homework first..........2007-03-03

I was VERY disappointed in this book for several reasons:
1). The author mentions the use of mineral oil and petrolatum as a moisturizer (for those of you that don't know these are byproducts of gasoline and are AWFUL for your skin, the cosmetic/beauty industry only use it because it is dirt cheap and never goes bad).
2). It is not practical to put your time and effort into making something for one application (will we really see results after just one use?). I suppose you can multiply the recipes but most of the recipes need to be used ASAP or they spoil. Needless to say I have not found a happy medium!
3). I have coarse curly hair- I tried one of the "hair packs" and needless to say it was a MESS! It took several shampoos to get all of the stuff out of my hair.

In conclusion, I would reccommend you research what products are actually good for you and not just convienient for the makers!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2007-01-22

I always wanted to learn how to make my own beauty products without all of the harmful chemicals that I always come across while shopping at a retail store. I have bought other books in that past only to find that it was incredibly expensive and almost impossible to find all of the ingredients, but not this one! I am able to make most of the recipes with the items I already have at home! I also love the fact that most of the recipes only require a few ingredients. The recipes are also extremely effective and the book also explains the purpose of each ingredient.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas.......2007-01-18

I love this book...I ordered a few of them to start making my own cosmetics after researching all the nasty things that are in what we actually cover our bodies with. Our skin is the biggest way into our insides and it affects us more than we even realize. this book has helped me come up with my own variations. Thank you for the very useful and helpful information: Easy to read, easy to follow and lots of fun, too. Great price too,Amazon.com!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars It's a great book but..........2007-07-13

I found it to be very repetitive. Throughout the whole book, he just says wash your hair with the Nexxus products, and stay away from the no-lye perms and use a lye perm. But I have read over and over that lye perms can be just as damaging to the hair. So instead of using getting the lye perm, I got the phytospecific relaxer which has no-chemicals in it and my hair came out really straight and soft. But it's really expensive. The book did help me though, I was really lost with my hair, always wondering why it would grow but split making me cut it off. But I wanted more information on my hair, I want to know anything and everything about it so that it would be healthier, so I'm thinking about buying another book to go along with it. Buy the book if you want simple information on your hair, child's hair, coloring your hair, and how to put in a lye relaxer. But if you want something with more detail, buy something else.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-07

I think this is an awesome guide for anyone doing their own hair at home or update some of our cosmetologist skills.

5 out of 5 stars I must sing the praises of Shamboosie!.......2007-01-05

I was just browsing the the book in the bookstore and a lady came up behind me and said this was a very good book. So I figured, what the hey, buy it. After reading it, I understand why my hair is getting drier and more unmanagable over time. I thought it was aging! I followed his instructions to the letter and exactly as he said-after the 4th treatment I had silky, bouncy, managable hair that I thought was gone forever. I have been converted. I am buying my best friend a copy for her birthday. Ladies of color, do yourselves a favor and read this book!

1 out of 5 stars never arrive.......2006-11-10

I have ordered this item since Aug, now is Nov, but i still havent received it!

5 out of 5 stars Best Hair Care Book (and Ive bought many).......2006-05-11

I bought this book two years ago and have been using the products recommended by Shamboosie for all of that time. Can I just say that if you read all of the other reviews and doubtfully pass this book over you are doing yourself a dis-service! I do not have a bad grade of hair but I was one of those folks who thought my hair had to be short to be cute. I would grow it out, lose control (as in breakage, ugly hair days, etc) and just cut it off again. I did the grow/cut cycle 5 times in 10 Years!!! Can I just say that these past 2 years have allowed me to receive compliments CONSTANTLY on my hair's health and overall look. I tell everyone that I am not sure if it is JUST the NEXXUS products but it sure could be!!! So much so, that I budget to buy these products! BUY THIS BOOK!

This book presents the industry-adopted level system of haircoloring, which analyzes the lightness or darkness of a color and eliminates the guess work of haircoloring. As more and more color companies use the technique it becomes essential for the salon professionals to be educated in the process. It provides sound and foolproof techniques, making the system a very attractive and appealing technique to learn and use.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good intro book.......2005-12-07

This book gives a good introduction on hair coloring, a lot of theory and a large number of interesting tips, however it falls short on the most important topic: Formulating. The book explains all the elements to consider when formulating, but doesn't explain in depth how to combine them all and how to build the actual formula for every case you might encounter.
Less important, this book is printed in black and looks as if it was designed for color printing and comes back an annoying number of times on "how to make big money coloring hair".
Despite the shortcomings, there are interesting thing to learn from this book and it might be useful as complement to the other Milady haircoloring book.

2 out of 5 stars MILADY'S STANDARD HAIR COLORING MANUEL AND ACTIVITIES BOOK: A LEVEL SYSTEM APPROACH.......2005-07-21

Not what I thought it would be. The book emphasizes the activities more than the instruction. There are some good things in the book overall as far as types of haircoloring procedures. Overall, I wish I had not ordered the book and kept my $35.99

5 out of 5 stars This is a very useful book!.......2000-08-22

Hi! I'm a student of cosmetology and I bought this book looking for complementary information besides my courses at my Cosmetology School. I found this text very very useful and above all, very easy to understand. This book covers every basic knowledge a student and haircolor lover needs to know: Color process, fillers, corrective color, the level system, basic color applications (virgin, retouch and artificial pigments removal), the law of color, lots of tips, cautions, recommendations and more. The book also includes some more advanced techniques such as foiling, bleaching and the special techniques which I found very interesting and beautiful to try, they are 15 in total and are all included and explained in detail in one chapter. There are also short sections of questions and activities with their corresponding answers (they are short and practical!) At the end of the book the reader will find a glossary, a Manufacturers' Hotline Numbers list and some "Note pages" for the reader to wrote down notes, questions, formulas, ideas or whatever he/she wants. I highly recommend this book to all the students who need stronger bases and to every person who loves color and wants to do it the right way!!!

Are $20 shampoos and conditioners worth it? Can good hair-care products be found at the drugstore, or are the expensive salon products really superior? In this comprehensive guide to all things hair care, consumer advocate Paula Begoun answers those questions and more in her reviews of more than 130 drugstore, salon, and department store hair product lines, from Aveda to Matrix and Pantene to Zirh. Thousands of products are described and evaluated according to their performance, reliability, price, and claims. Begoun compares good and bad ingredients, dispels hair-care industry myths, evaluates what helps and what hurts hair, and explains how to tell the difference between reality and hype with respect to a product's performance. Hair sprays, shampoos, conditioners, gels, mousses, pomades, silicone serums, and other items are covered. Her "Best Products" lists make it easy to find items worth trying in any category. The consumer bible of hair-care products, Don't Go Shopping for Hair-Care Products Without Me, shows how to find the best products available at the most economical prices. Ultimately, Begoun shows consumers how to have beautiful tresses without spending a fortune.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.......2006-12-26

I have saved a ton of money by reading her books. Love her!

1 out of 5 stars I think she got paid by Pantene!.......2006-12-03

I read this book, and I must say, it seems that the only thing she likes is Pantene, and other like products. On every other page there is a reference to a product, but how Pantene is better. Are you kidding me!!!! Yuck! I think she seriously got paid off on this one. Cover to cover advertisements for a damaging horrrible product.

5 out of 5 stars Save yourself some money and read this book.......2006-11-21

I am very glad that I read this book. This book is a must read. It will save you time and money on products because you will know why you should or should not buy them. And you will know what works and what does not. I never realized there were such over-laps and similarities in the hair care industry. Thank you Ms. Begoun for writing this book.

2 out of 5 stars Informational but Biased.......2006-08-31

Ms. Begoun should be commended for her massive research but I found her information biased, and her opinions flip-flop from chapter to chapter.I did not understand her vicious attack on companies that produce natural and organic products, especially one particular organic company so I did a little more digging. She has her own haircare line which is full of all the things she says are bad for your hair. Her book seems to seeks to discredit any companies that make great products that do not use the chemicals she uses.
She also makes a very ridiculous statement about black hair in its natural state not being an acceptable fashion statement. Yet later in the chapter she asks the question why these women allow themselves to be slaves to fashion styles such as braiding, cornrowing, and weaving. Her lack of new, accurate, or real information for black haircare probably could have been the catalyst for several black and multi-ethnic haircare website showing up offering real tried and true products she did not review (probably because they don't have all the chemicals she loves, or are so unlike many of the black haircare products she reviewed.) Her book aggravated me because she seems to hide her opinions behind supposed scientific research.

1 out of 5 stars NO INFORMATION FOR BLACK WOMEN, RACIST.......2006-08-21

This book is not for people of color. Paula Begoun only devotes 10 pages to information regarding black hair, and actually has the audicity to say, "Suffice it to say that the natural state of black hair is currently not an acceptable fashion statement for women of color." IS SHE CRAZY??? This statement is extremely offensive. (Would anyone ever say almond shaped eyes are unacceptable on asian people?) This is a part of our genetics and our looks. Does Paula notice all of the models, actresses, singers and even politicians who are black (women) who wear their hair natural??? Even white people and asian people try to braid/lock their hair to look like ours!! If she thinks natural black hair is unacceptable, then she should not write books abour hair care, and go live by herself on an island (which is obviously where she has been). Paula sweetie, stop sniffing hair care products...

Book Description

At loose ends with your locks? Let the “Queen of Curl” show you how to bring out the best in your hair.

The lengths that women go to in order to tame their curls! If you’ve been blessed with curly hair, chances are that you’ve thought of it as a curse, complaining, “It’s uncontrollable!” “It’s a mess!” or “It’s so frizzy and
tangly!” Out of frustration, you may have mistakenly resorted to methods (straighteners, irons, blow-dryers) that only cause more damage to your hair. Now renowned New York City stylist Ouidad sets the record straight on curly hair and shows you how to start loving the waves, kinks, and curls you were born with. In Curl Talk, Ouidad reveals the secrets to bringing out your natural beauty, including:
* Finding the right cut
* How often to shampoo (and why you never wrap your wet hair in a towel)
* Why brushes and mousses should be outlawed
* The best conditioning and styling treatments
* Blow-drying, coloring, and straightening the safe way

Based on Ouidad’s experience catering solely to curly-haired clients at her exclusive Manhattan salon, Curl Talk is a straight-talking guide for your daily struggle with the frizzies, offering simple, step-by-step solutions for getting a gorgeous head of curls. It will revolutionize the way you treat your hair.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-09-21

This book is a great resource for those of us having a hard time taming our curls! She has packed this little volume with loads of useful information, from good/bad ingredients in products to how to enhance curl and prevent frizz. I only wish that she had a salon in Chicago!

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-08-19

I guess I never knew how to care for my hair, since following the tips in the book I have a gorgous head of hair. I could not be happier.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Curly Hair!.......2007-06-07

I really enjoyed this book. It gave me some great advice I had never heard before on how to deal with my curly hair. It talks about hairstyles and haircare for several different types of curly hair. It's wonderful the author has curly hair herself and isn't just guessing what it feels like to live with it.

4 out of 5 stars Curly Hair Relief.......2006-07-31

Ouidad understands curly hair as she, her siblings, and parents, all have differeing types of curly hair. How nice it is to have a stylist who created a product and a cutting method because she, herself, needed it -- as opposed to a marketer who is simply trying to make more sales. This book, partnered with the web site, is worth the money if you are trying to conquer and show off your beautiful curls.

1 out of 5 stars Get CURLY GIRL book instead.......2005-12-05

Sorry but this book was like watching an informercial for Ouidad products. Don't waste your money on the book or the "miracle product." Buying a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner which contains the right proteins, emollients, humectants etc.and alcohol-free clear hair gel from your local discount store will do the trick. HINT: Look for products in the ethnic hair care section of your store, product with a big price tag that promises your hair a miracle!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Haircolor Book for Beginners.......2006-07-19

I am a cosmetology educator and I use this book to help me teach my students. Excellent for cosmetology students or some one who has been out of the business and wants to brush up on coloring . A little to basic for advanced professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-12-07

By far the best book on hair coloring that I ever came across. Covers theory and formulating in depth. It has a lot of practical examples, explains many problem situations and remedies.
The only possible drawback is that this book frequently has to refer to your color manufacturer's documentation - and it is not so easy to find good technical product documentation that is level with the high quality of this book.

5 out of 5 stars a reader from Georgia.......2004-04-27

This book is brilliantly written and researched. It can be read at all levels of background. I highly recommend it for the colorist that wants to be knowledgeable. I picked it up and couldn't put it down.

1 out of 5 stars Boring !!.......2000-08-23

Not a very modern approach. Most of the ideas in this book would be appropriate for the 70's and 80's but not for today. The techniques used are all things any colorist should know coming out of beauty school.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed, Fascinating.......2000-08-06

Excellent presentation of info for the professional hairdresser. Good for any level of expertise. How to of hair color and the WHY behind it. I loved the details...(for example, they explain WHY and HOW chlorine turns hair brittle and green, not just a boring statement of the fact that it does and some ways to reverse that.)

Nice photos, well laid out, a little pricey but LOTS cheaper than a class.

1 out of 5 stars Designed for "Little House on the Prarie".......2007-09-08

While on the search for a good book on easy hairstyling, I was elated to read all of the positive reviews for this book. I had short hair for years and have grown it out and was seeking some insight on quick and easy styles that would not require a lot of time (I have two young children and have little time for difficult dos).

I had hoped to find some neat updos and nice variations on the traditional ponytail. Instead, this book is all about braiding and the braids (as well as the models in the photographs) look like they are straight from an episode of Little House on the Prarie. The directions are clearly outlined and the photos nice BUT (and that is a big BUT), you must be interested in the 70's farm girl hair style in order to appreciate this book.

Though the braids are easy, I would never do them on myself as I prefer more modern styles (or even traditional styles that are not as dated as those in this book). The title of the book is very misleading -- the "and styles" is not appropriate. The entire book is about braiding alone. I purchased the book more for the "and styles" section which really does not exist.

As I said, if you are looking for a book on very dated braiding styles, this one is simple and quite clear with wonderful photographs to assist you. However, if you are looking for more modern styles and an inclusion of something other than braids, look elsewhere. I was very disappointed in this book.

4 out of 5 stars So simple even a dad can use it.......2007-08-20

My hair hasn't touched my collar since 1983. Over two decades of military experience. A masters degree. Over twenty years of training with any weapon I could get my hands on, or fighting with empty hands. Just to be a six year old girl's hairdresser (among other things). Such is fatherhood.

Dignity and machismo be d*****, if I going to do it, I'm going to do it as well as I can. This book was a huge help. Before this excellent Klutz Press publication, I was limited to pony tails and simple variations on the theme. Now, I can braid, herringbone, and twist with the best of them. I'm not so good at french braids, but the girl's hair is very fine and I understand it is hard to do a good french braid in extremely fine hair.

The instructions are clearly laid out and easy to understand. The techniques are basic, but provide a "vocabulary" that can be expanded into a wide range of styles for even the most unpleasant mornings when nothing is quite right. The mysteries of the rat-tail comb have been revealled to me, and I won't attempt anything harder than a pony-tail without it again. The single strongest point has to be the clarity of the instructions. Everything is described in simple words and clear pictures that even I could grasp.

Several reviewers commented on the difficulty of doing these techniques by yourself. I will defer to their experience as I never tried to do any of these on myself.

The only downside to this book is that I have been blacklisted by a number of fellow dads after their wives said "Van can do a Victorian twist, why can't you do anything other than a pony tail?"

5 out of 5 stars Braids, Braids and More Braids ... .......2007-06-08

One great book of braids; from the standard (and easy to follow instructions) for french braiding to a wonderful selection of unusual and beautiful styles. Easy to complex and all very stylish. You will love this book and love your new looks.

3 out of 5 stars Fun but not very practical........2007-06-05

The book is fun to read and the styles are nice to jazz up your everyday look. My fingers are super clumsy, so most of the styles actually take me over 15 minutes to do, which is too time consuming for a morning schedule. People with short or super long hair probably won't find it as useful as those with shoulder-length or moderately long hair. If your hair is one plain color without highlights, it won't look as interesting as those pictured in the book either. I still find the book interesting and look it up for styling ideas once in a while.

5 out of 5 stars Hair Braiding.......2007-05-17

This book is just what you need if you want to learn how to braid your hair in numerous ways. It is informative and instructional.
