4 out of 5 stars Not the best, it helps.......2007-07-02

The last comment from James Min is on the ball, however, although many of the questions ARE too easy..there are too easy for sum1 who has a solid foundation in OCHEM, like myself. However, with sum of teh questions that i got wrong, the explaniations were perfect in allowing me to understand and review sum of the things that I 4got. Example: What is the hydrogen defeciency of C1204h3Br1-

The formula for this problem is (2n+2) - x/2 where is the number of carbons and x is the number of hydrogen OR Halogen...My OCHEM prof never mentioned that we added the halogens to this equation! So overall I will give the book 4 stars

2 out of 5 stars It will not prepare you for the MCAT.......2007-06-30

It does not deal sufficiently with reactions. The questions are too easy. I don't have a problem with the questions being in discrete forms since one needs solid understanding of the materials (through discrete questions) before being able to tackle passage based questions. But, after having gone through about 50% of the book so far, I don't feel like I've improved in my knowledge base in Ochem. If you need very very basic questions, this book is for you. I get the feeling this book was put together in a hasty manner with little thought invested in the quality of the questions. I would not recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Exam Style.......2005-09-23

This book is a hasty review of Orgo, but it covers most of the MCAT material in relatively small number of pages. Although some diagrams are not very helpful, it tells you most of what you need. It is basically a good book if you are a time-pressed pre-med trying to take the MCAT in 2 months. If you have more time, I recommend reading over your orgo textbook once more and doing problem sets in various other MCAT preparation materials (the ones with only MCAT style problems). Hope this helps.

2 out of 5 stars Decent.......2005-07-24

This book was decent in that it reviewed some of the fundemental concepts necessary for the MCAT. However, most of the questions were too easy, and none resemble the format of an actual MCAT question (not passage based). There were some errors, but easy to identify. The book was worth having for extra practice if you have the money, but don't expect much.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect practice problems for MCAT.......2004-02-19

Practice is the key to the MCAT. Review is an essential first step, but is only part of the complete preparation for the MCAT. ORGO 1001 will help you guys ace the Biological Science questions. Everything from stereochemistry to lab techniques is in this book. There are over 90 stereochemistry questions alone. This book won't guarantee a 15, but it may help raise your score a couple points.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ok.......2007-05-31

Again Barrons keeps to its style of writing review books that are somewhat more difficult than the actual test. Overall I think they have a good book here. Unfortunately there are some noticeable typos, wrong answers in practice exams and that sort of thing. However if you are decent, they won't be a problem and you'll benefit from the 4 practice exams in the book.

3 out of 5 stars Use with other books.......2003-08-15

This is a good refresher book for those that haven't had chemistry in a while. However I would recommend using it in conjunction with either Examcrackers or Kaplan as well as a chemistry textbook for reference.

5 out of 5 stars A GOOD GUIDE!!!.......1999-10-16

I used mcatchemistry book for the Aug. MCAT. It was great! idid well on the test and this book played a good role. The book is agood guide for mcat chem preparation for both genral & organic. *****

4 out of 5 stars An Adequate Refresher!.......1999-08-07

the MCAT Chemistry touched the essential key concepts in chemistry for the MCAt. It functioned as a good refresher for me.

1 out of 5 stars Completely incomplete!.......1999-08-02

This books provides skimpy coverage of the chemistry you'll need for the MCAT. There are very few practice problems and they do not reflect the MCAT format. Don't bother.

5 out of 5 stars A good CHEM package!!!!.......1999-07-27

This book helped me to refresh chemistry basics for the mcat. A good review of general chemistry and organic.. practice questions also helped.

4 out of 5 stars another solid review book. .......2006-11-04

If you did well in gen chem, then this book will be great for reviewing concepts in a timely manner. The section on acid\base chemistry and electrochemistry are quick and to the point.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional MCAT Prep Materials.......2002-04-29

This book contains all the info necessary to do well on the Physical Sciences section of the MCAT. Everything is presented very clearly and this book truly gives you an understanding of mcat chemistry. I recently took the April MCAT and I must say that this book and the Examkrackers physics made me feel like the PS was a JOKE! Their materials allow you to understand the mcat science conceptually such that no mcat item is EVER intimidating. Each lecture is complemented with a 30min exam where you can test the concepts as you review. (They're challenging though) Examkrackers all the way with no Imitations!!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book.......2001-04-02

This book is layed out in a fashion that allows you to learn the material in a simple but productive manner. If your going to take the mcat this book will teach you chemistry.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, not without errors.......2003-07-24

This book is excellent, and will help you with the Chemistry AP test AND your class.

It is, however, riddled with errors. The errors are small, and part of the learning process (I suppose) is finding them, crossing them out, and laughing in delight at your genius. "Planck's constant is 6.63*10^34, NOT 6.63*10^24!! I WIN AGAIN BARKER!" I had quite an adventure with this book, the name Brett Barker will forever be etched in my mind.

My chemistry class was like this. The teacher knew more about her subject than any other teacher I've ever had, but alas, couldn't teach to people of less than average intelligence. She was cursed with knowledge that could not be shared. Hence, I learned close to nothing in the class. I suffered tremendously 2nd semester because of organic chemistry and earned a B.

I still earned a 3 on the AP test, an average, unspectacular, but still PASSING grade. How did I do it? What was my secret? You guessed it - "Arco Master the AP Chemistry Test 2001: Written by Brett Barker." I picked it up 3 weeks before the test, spent over 3 hours a day taking notes on the entire book and doing all of the practice problems. Perhaps if I had gotten it 5 weeks before the test and spent 5 hours a day, I would have gotten a 5.

Get this book BEFORE your class, if you know everything in it you'll get 2 A's and a 5. If only time travel was practical...I could travel back in time and fix my foolish ways.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for a Full Review.......2001-08-10

This book offers an extensive review of the material covered on the AP exam. There are a few typos, but anyone who is even slightly good at chemistry will be able to realize what they actually meant. I would not say that this book is a good one in a last ditch effort to try to squzze some chemistry in your brain. The review is meant to be studied at a moderate pace. In fact none of these prep books can take the place of a solid year of study in a rigorous class with a competent teacher.

Nevertheless it is a very good book. It did help me achieve that 5. I didnt take the practice exams but from the looks of them they seemed to be a good reflection of the test. I actually took real AP tests from past years. Taking actual multiple choice and free-response sections of preious exams coupled with studying this book for a month, and a strong year in chemistry will get anyone a 4 at the very least.

4 out of 5 stars No index...?.......2001-08-08

I found this book right before taking the AP exam and checked it out of my library hoping it would help. Unfortunately, I did not have much time to study it, but from what I could tell, it was a good book that would have probably been very effective preparation.

The presentation was very nicely done and did not make my eyes ache. The variance in fonts, enlargement of important concepts, and obvious display of sample problems all contributed in keeping me focused. The explanations were pithy but never confusing or vague. I appreciated the reminders and descriptive side boxes for key concepts. In addition to the content, the narrative style was most helpful in its ability to introduce matter in a direct and affable manner without making you feel stupid or overwhelmed.

My only complaint is the way topics are displayed. The chapters are listed in the beginning and there are clear headings throughout; however, this is somewhat difficult for quick reference. An index is indispensable and I wish they would have included one in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Thorough Review But These Caveats:.......2001-04-29

This book does provide a thorough review; however, in my copy there are about 33 pages missing!! If you do buy this great book, check your copy and see if you have pages 87-118.

4 out of 5 stars A review book with clear explanations.......2001-02-25

Unlike most review books of this type, this one delivers a lot of information with in-depth explanations that are clearly written. The author seems to know his audience well, and strives to explain complex material by going over the basics and then building a logical and coherent framework. There is also a lot of emphasis on problem solving, which no doubt will be useful to those taking the AP Chemistry exam. This book probably would be useful for 1st year college chemistry students as well. Overall, this book is one of the better ones in this genre, marred only by a few easily discernable typos.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent General Chemistry book.......2007-08-28

I am studying for my DAT now and i think this book is much more sufficient than Kaplan. I took my general chemistry 5 years ago; thats why some of the important concept had faded out of my memory.
I am really scared since i dont want to go back to my gen textbook; i am glad that i picked out this book
The book also very organize and really easy to understand.
I recommend for any students who are struggled with General Chem to have this book.

3 out of 5 stars The questions in this book...are different from the exam..........2000-05-17

....There's a modern version of this book (the one with rainbowcolors). I took five out of the six tests...and every time I took a test...it would lower my esteem A LOT! So if you have a high esteem....I would get this book...otherwise don't get it at all. The multiple choice questions are WAY HARDER than the ones in the ap exam ~ so...I guess it was good practice (but I felt like I wasted my time...so this book is NOT RECOMENDED for last minute studying). And the free response questions...are NOTHING like the ap exam (the one in the REA seems to be easier). I believe there are better books out there. I would recomend the Barron's AP Chemistry book (warning: this book is like another text book...so if you have a very good background..then you probably don't even need this book). Finally I really recomend EVERYONE to get the Princeton Review book. The book contains the majority of the information that is included in the AP Chemistry exam. The book is also presented in an UNINTIMIDATING format...and you'll be able to review the whole course in 3 hours or less if you use the book efficiently. ....

1 out of 5 stars It was a very poor review of Chemistry concepts.......1999-05-19

First, The book had a lot of errors. Second, the tests in this book ( although there are 6 of them) are much easier than the AP Exam and it excludes a lot of concepts that the actual AP exam stresses. So I would stay away from this book.

1 out of 5 stars Stay away from this very poor book........1999-05-17

Do not buy this book. It's explanations are poor, it has way too many typos, and it doesn't have real AP tests. I thought it would be nice having solutions to problems to work from, but they were no good.

1 out of 5 stars Go buy a different book!.......1999-01-27

Our school ordered tens of copies of this book for our AP Chem class, and it wasn't helpful at all! First, the tests weren't like the AP Exam. Second, the book covered topics not in any of the AP guidelines, e.g. calculus-based chemistry/physics. Please, why waste your precious money and time with this book? I'm told that this is not uncommon for books from this publisher, so I'd avoid them.
