GOOD Installers book.......2007-03-15
Its a very good book, which starts reviewing from basics to intense data related to the topic of Fiber Optics.
Basics its very important , its like the foundation of knowledge to me, like breakfast is the most important food of the whole day..
I recommend this book.
The Fiber Optic Technicians Manual.......2005-11-04
Hi, I'm Jim Hayes, editor/author of The Fiber Optic Technicians Manual, with the third edition just released.
I'd like to clear up the confusion created by Mr. Cooke. Delmar Learning, the publisher of the book, also offers two companion books, an Instructor's Guide that provides guidance to instructors using the book in their classes and a laboratory manual for guiding students through hands-on activities that develop skills in fiber optic installation.
The Instructor's Guide has suggestions on how to structure classes using the book as well as answers to all the chapter exercises. The Lab Manual has step-by-step instructions on setting up and teaching labs in fiber optics. The instructor teaching a class with this book should have both manuals in addtion to the textbook to teach a class. A reader interested in developing skills in fiber optic installation only needs the Lab Manual.
We also offer complete instructor teaching packages based on the books and self-study programs through VDV Academy ([...])
If you want to learn about fiber optics and how to design and install networks using fiber optics (or teach it), this is a booked aimed directly at you.
Instructors Guide to Fiber Optics Technicians Manual.......2003-03-11
This is the second edition by Jim Hayes an instructor with Fiber U of "Instructors Guide to Fiber Optics Technicians Manual" WARNING You need the "other" manual issued in Feb 2000, not this one issued in March 2002 for the full 17 chapter overview!

Customer Reviews:
Somewhat Obsolete.......2002-02-08
Many portions of this book (the 2nd edition) are obsolete. This is due to a new TIA cabling standard (568-B) which was ratified right around the time of this book's release in the Spring of 2001. BICSI has since released a 3rd edition in 3-ring-binder format, but McGraw-Hill has not as of yet released the hardcover of the 3rd edition. If you plan on buying this book, either get the 3rd edition through BICSI or wait for McGraw-Hill to publish a hardcopy of the 3rd edition. But before you buy, read on...
Other than the now obsolete portions of this book, it is accurate, but without many exercises or detailed labs in this volume, I'd have to agree with other reviewers here and call it "lacking detail." Perhaps a lab-book is where all the details went. I have also noticed that this book goes so far out of its way to be "vendor-neutral" that it sometimes uses terms that almost nobody in the industry would recognize. This edition also fails to mention some new cabling innovations that have been around since early 2000.
Finally, just one point of interest here; the primary reviewer who has give this book a 5-star rating has a vested interest in the book as well. He is listed in the acknowledgements section of this book, so take those comments with a grain-of-salt.
Obsolete Information.......2001-03-23
This book contains old and soon to be obsolete information. Another reviewer says in his review "Its my understanding that an update is in the works and it can only get better". He is right. According to BICSI, they have written and will soon be selling a new version of this book. But this is the old book! I purchased this book now I find out that a new version is about to be released. I can't believe they are selling old book and passing them off as new material.
Book is dissapointing.......2001-03-23
I was expecting a lot when I purchased this book. I have been in the cable installation industry for over 25 years. I was looking for a book to teach communication cabling installation to new employees and to other individuals thinking of entering the cabling installation industry. The book has two major problems. First, the book provides cabling specifications that are based on old TIA cabling standards. BICSI publishes other manuals that have more up to date information. Therefore, this book contradicts the latest TIA cabling standards and other information that is used by everyone in the cabling industry. Second, most of the book's content is filled with bulleted points organized into lists. I assume that these bulleted point must be important but there is virtually no meaningful expanation of what these bulleted points mean and why they are important. As a result, I read lots of pages but didn't learn any useful information from this book. If you purchase this book and think you will become a cabling expert, you won't!
Awesome Book.......2001-03-17
This book is a 'must have' for persons that are involved in the installation of Telecommunications cabling in comercial buildings. This book is probably the most complete assembling of pertinant information of its kind. I highly recommend this valuable resource.
Great Manual.......2001-03-14
I have reviewed this technical manual from its inception in 1996 to date. This is the second revision and is much more inclusive than the first edition. It is a "must have" for each installer/technician in the industry. Strongly recommend it.
Book Description
This book is a comprehensive contributed volume that aims to describe and explain the design, fabrication, operating characteristics, and specific applications of the most popular and useful types of specialty optical fibers. These specialty fibers include any kind of optical fiber that has been architecturally manipulated to diverge from a conventional structure. For instance, metal-coated fibers can be utilized for bandwidth improvement, and hollow core fibers offer more controllable dispersion for sensitive medical procedures.
Applications for these specialty fibers abound in the biomedical, sensors, and industrial fields, as well as in more traditional communications capacities. This book will act as a specialty fiber guided tour, hosted by the top names in the discipline. The globally renowned editors, Drs. Mendez and Morse, have extensive experience in research, academia, and industry.
*Completely covers biomedical and industrial sensor technology with emphasis on real world applications
*Comparative studies of pros and cons of all fiber types with relation to test and measurement, mechanical properties and strength, and reliability
*Easy to access essential facts and details at the begining of each chapter
Customer Reviews:
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2007-03-21
Are you a developer in the specialty fiber business? Editors Alexis Mendez, T. F. Morse and other authors too numerous to mention, have done an outstanding job of writing a book provides insight into the many types of specialty fibers that are novel with respect to materials, fiber design, and application.
Mendez, T. F. Morse and other authors, begin with a review of the driving factors that have helped develop and grow the specialty fiber industry. In addition, the authors briefly focus their discussion on the light-guiding principles and fundamental aspects of fiber design. They also provide an overview of the various fiber fabrication techniques employed. Then, they discuss coating materials and processes. The authors then cover some of the newer, more specialized, single-mode fibers for telecommunications applications such as the ultra-low OF fibers, dispersion flattened, and dispersion compensating fibers. Next, they discuss a myriad of different specialty single-mode fibers. Then, they cover the photosensitive fibers used in the fabrication of fiber Bragg gratings and other devices. The authors continue by describing in detail the fundamentals of hollow-core fibers. In addition, they cover new research work on the analysis and fabrication of sub-wavelength diameter fibers and the so-called silica nanowires. The authors also discuss other singular specialty fiber types and chiral fibers. Next, they cover the various glass and crystal material candidates used in mid-IR and IR fibers. Then, they cover the different glass compositions and new advances in design. The authors continue by discussing the many situations in which ultra-low loss is not a necessity to fulfill a specific design application. Next, they cover the specialty fibers needed in fiber lasers and their industrial applications. Finally, they describe fiber delivery systems, specialty fibers required and applications in the biomedical area.
This most excellent book has presented a fairly complete overview of the many different types of specialty optical fibers. Perhaps more importantly, this book presented a fairly complete overview of the many different uses of specialty optical fibers, and the expected directions in which this field will develop!

Customer Reviews:
Unreadable.......2007-08-14
This book is nothing more than a series of unaddressed topics. They talk about many possible fiberglass repair situations but never quite get around to telling you how to fix them. Confusing photos. I know as much now as before I got this book. Ask a pint dealer or some old guy at Home Depot, you'll get better information.
Must be imaginative..........2002-12-19
I agree that this book has serious problems with pictures and photos, because the drawings included are very poor so you cannot identify the difference between the different materials. But in my particular case, people in fiberglass materials stores understood what I was looking for (by the materials and fluids names) and at that moment theory and reality matched perfectly.
The amateur results that I was expecting (car speakers, small boxes) were achieved completely.
Annoying.......2001-04-17
This will be short:
Have you ever seen one of those books that looks like it will have a lot of good info on how to do something, open the cover and realize that it's just a "this is nice stuff that you could do if you knew how, but I'm not going to tell you the details of how..." book? This is that book.
To add to that, it's outdated, and even though all the products introduced and shown were of one brand, they didn't even take a picture of them but instead someone drew a picture of the can sitting there...

One Up From Technician's Hanbook!.......2000-08-04
This is a good book that goes beyone those intro to fiber optics books (that left out the equations and engineering technologies). It's basically a non-equation book for engineers, rather than techs or curious fans of fiber optics (it does get a wee bit complicated).
This book goes into more detail on fiber optic components, applications (networks), manufacturing (packaging, semiconductor fab techniques etc) and touches on curring edge devices (well, the book is 2 years old...).
I'd recommend it if you want to know what your engineers and boss are talking about. It's not the book to grab if you're going to start designing routers or waveguides (you'd probably know the stuff in the book if you're given the job to do such things...)
Best book on Practical Fiber Optics.......1999-03-19
This is one of the best books I have ever read on Fiber Optic communications. Very up-to-date and in-depth. It is a definite book for your fiber optics books library.

Non-crystalline solid tellurite glasses continue to intrigue both academic and industry researchers not only because of their many technical applications, but also because of a fundamental interest in understanding their microscopic mechanisms. Tellurite Glasses Handbook: Physical Properties and Data is the first and only comprehensive source of physical constants and properties of these unique, non-crystalline solids. The author has collected rigid data from experiments conducted over the last 50 years and presents here their elastic, anelastic, optical, electrical, and thermal properties. He also provides details of the experimental techniques, explores applications, and suggests directions of future research. The interference and independence of physical processes occurring simultaneously are key problems in material science. With the Tellurite Glasses Handbook, researchers can begin to understand these physical processes, overcome current technological problems, and open up a new area of glass science: the Physics of Non-Crystalline Solids
