Book Description
Recent decades have seen an explosion of new applications of fluoropolymers in all aspects of human life, particularly in the chemical, electrical, and semiconductor industries. Properties of durability, inertness, low coefficient of friction, and high heat and chemical resistance are unmatched by any other family of plastics.
This is the second of a two volume series of books about fluoroplastics. Volume 1 covers the non-melt processible homopolymers, requiring non-traditional processing techniques. Volume 2 is devoted to the melt-processible fluoropolymers, their polymerization and fabrication techniques. Both a source of data and a reference, the properties, characterstics, applications, safety, disposal, and recycling of melt-processible fluoropolymers are comprehensively detailed for immediate use by practicing engineers and scientists in the plastics industry. Students will benefit from the book’s arrangement and extensive references.
Customer Reviews:
Fluoroplastics Volume 2.......2003-10-27
This is a continuation of a previously published book on fluoroplastics by the same author. This volume covers the melt-processable fluoroplastics, one of the fastest growing segments of fluoropolymeric materials. The written material is very well and logically organized.
The book emphasizes the practical over theoretical, although it still covers relevant scientific principles involved in the synthesis of monomers, polymerization, properties and processing. Each melt-processing technology is introduced and very well explained. Additional topics covered are applications, safety, disposal and recycling of fluoropolymers. Numerous appendices contain test methods and technical properties of the commercial products, such as high temperature resistance, permeation etc. A comprehensive glossary is also included.
The ample references at the end of each chapter serve as a resource for more detailed reading on the given subject. There are numerous review papers included, which represent additional relevant resource for the reader.
Fluoroplastics, Volume 2 contains a wealth of useful information and quality data for the student, for the engineer in process or product development or for the scientist in industrial research and development or for the university teacher interested in technology. It is definitely the most comprehensive and informative work on the subject published so far.
Melt Processible Fluoroplastics.......2003-07-29
This is an excellent, thorough work covering this fast-growing segment of the polymer science and technology. Its title claims to be "The Definitive User's Guide and Databook" and it is just that. It covers everything from fundamentals, synthesis of monomers, polymerization, structure and properties and a large variety of essential processing and fabrication methods and applications pertaining to melt processable fluoropolymers. Although all chapters of the book are put together impeccably, those dealing with processing are the strongest ones. Each processing method is explained first and then the details applicable to fluoropolymers are discussed thoroughly. Seven appendices provide information on high temperature resistance, permeation properties of certain fluoroplastics, mechanical, thermal, electrical and physical properties of FEP films, and modulus data for fluoroplastics. A very thorough glossary and a list of trademarks are included and represent additional valuable resources for the reader.

Book Description
This extensively updated second edition was created for medical device, medical packaging, and food packaging design engineers, material product technical support, and research/development personnel. This comprehensive databook contains important characteristics and properties data on the effects of sterilization methods on plastics and elastomers. It provides a ready reference for comparing materials in the same family as well as materials in different families.
Data is presented on 43 major plastic and elastomer packaging materials, including biodegradable or organic polymers. New to this edition are resin chapters containing textual summary information including: category; general description; applications; resistances to particular sterilization methods; and regulatory status considerations for use in medical devices and medical/food packaging. The resin chapter material supplier trade name product data is presented in graphical and tabular format, with results normalized to SI units, retaining the familiar format of the best selling first edition and allowing easy comparison between materials and test conditions.

Book Description
"Completely updated and enlarged to reflect the advances that have taken place since the publication of the Second Edition. Third Edition offers concise examinations of the chemical nature, characteristic properties, and uses of traditional industrial polymers, such as acrylics, polyolefins, vinyl polymers, polyesters, epoxies, and silicones, among others."
Customer Reviews:
Unreadable.......2007-08-14
This book is nothing more than a series of unaddressed topics. They talk about many possible fiberglass repair situations but never quite get around to telling you how to fix them. Confusing photos. I know as much now as before I got this book. Ask a pint dealer or some old guy at Home Depot, you'll get better information.
Must be imaginative..........2002-12-19
I agree that this book has serious problems with pictures and photos, because the drawings included are very poor so you cannot identify the difference between the different materials. But in my particular case, people in fiberglass materials stores understood what I was looking for (by the materials and fluids names) and at that moment theory and reality matched perfectly.
The amateur results that I was expecting (car speakers, small boxes) were achieved completely.
Annoying.......2001-04-17
This will be short:
Have you ever seen one of those books that looks like it will have a lot of good info on how to do something, open the cover and realize that it's just a "this is nice stuff that you could do if you knew how, but I'm not going to tell you the details of how..." book? This is that book.
To add to that, it's outdated, and even though all the products introduced and shown were of one brand, they didn't even take a picture of them but instead someone drew a picture of the can sitting there...

Book Description
This book describes the history and properties of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) used in artificial joints.
UHMWPE is currently used in 1.4 million patients around the world every year for use in the hip, knee, upper extremities and spine. It has been used in hip replacements for over 40 years. Although the use of this material is very succcessful, the lifetime of artificial joints is limited to approximately 10 years, after which the survivorship declines markedly.
Recently, the orthopedic industry has developed new processing techniques (radiation crosslinking), which are expected to dramatically reduce wear and improve the longevity of hip implants beyond 10 years.
A major emphasis of this book is to describe the properties of these new highly crosslinked UHMWPE materials and to review the latest clinical results.
* The most up-to-date information on the properties of UHMWPE
* Endorsed by Ticona - the world's leading manufacturer of UHMWPE for medical use
* An enormous 'installed base' of over 1.4 million procedures each year
* UHMWPE has been used by orthopedists for over 40 years, yet its properties and performance in situ are still not well understood
Download Description
Artificial hip, shoulder and other joint replacements are routine surgical procedures today, and are growing exponentially with an ageing population. The material used for these prosthetic joints is overwhelmingly comprised in part (normally as the socket in which a metal ball joint sits) of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene or UHMWPE. Looking and feeling a lot like the Teflon substance used for artificial skating rinks, this substance has remarkable properties - which explain its useage - but is barely understood to any depth in practice by either surgeons, biomaterials specialists, polymer scientists and engineers. Recently, the orthopedic industry developed new processing techniques (radiation crosslinking), which are expected to dramatically reduce wear and improve the longevity of hip implants beyond 10 years, making this material of still greater importance to the materials and medical communities.
