      5 out of 5 stars All encompassing.......2007-01-10

You can tell when someone has lived that which they write.

There is much more to this book than 'just sensors'. It treats complex situations with simplicity and depth. The author describes how you might decide upon a certain technique and then how to use the appropriate sensor or from the other angle, which sensor would work best and the unexpected accompanying pieces to ensure it, for example, his novel use of a guitar string.

Some may call this book a 'bible' of sorts. As a reader of technical books, to me, this book is a very satisfying read. An elegant coverage, well thought out, complete and orderly while not bloated and padantic. I cannot say that about too many books, technical or non.

This book could gets the three bears award!

5 out of 5 stars One-of-a-kind text in mobile robotics.......2003-04-16

The author is one of the most renown in the field and reading this book you can see why in this one-of-a-kind book. This work documents many systems and techniques used in mobile robotics. It gives enough detail to provide a technical picture (without delving unnecessarily deep) for the sake of covering the broad range of topics. Although a bit dated as of this review I still would highly recommend this for educational and reference purposes in addition to leisure reading. Much of the technologies and techniques covered are still used in today's world and definitely will likely be applied, in many ways, to future technologies (robotic or otherwise). For persons with some science and engineering background, this is an excellent book that can help you take a step into the world of robotics.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-10-18

This book includes descriptions of an amazing variety of sensors. I had never even imagined some of these sensing devices. I used two of the sensing techniques for a class project and they got quite a bit of attention from others in the class because the sensors I chose were so unorthodox. You may think you have seen it all but you haven't unless you own this book!

      2 out of 5 stars so so..........2001-11-21

Book covers alot of topics related to robotics, but fails to do so at more detailed levels.
Good book for general information, but would not recommend it to anyone looking to get any "real" information for implementation.

      5 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR ROBOTICS.......2000-01-12

This is simply a great book. I use it all the time for reference. If you are into robotics, this is a must.

            4 out of 5 stars A STARTING POINT.......2007-07-12

A concise and interesting book for the ones that want to start learning about wireless sensor networks (WSN). It presents facts regarding wireless communication, network function and sensor applications implying all seven layers of the OSI model.

It includes a consistent chapter about middleware (session and presentation layer) that i could not find in other similar books.

It may appear boring for those who know much about WSNs. This book is a very good starting point, but is not suitable for those who want to design WSNs.

I give it 4 stars because it has provided me a very good basic knowledge about WSNs.

2 out of 5 stars Redundant and very superficial.......2007-05-24

I bought this book in the hope of learning some really concrete stuff about wireless sensor networks. After reading the first chapter, I was already disappointed with the redundancy. After reading the first four chapters, I was disappointed with the redundancy and superficiality of the book. The following chapters I only sampled and the trend of redundancy and superficiality continued. On top of this, the writing style is very boring. This was probably the most boring pseudo-technical book I have read in ages. This book is definitely not worth its considerable high price. And I pity the students that are probably going to be forced to study from it.

            Book Description

Taking another lesson from nature, the latest advances in image processing technology seek to combine image data from several diverse types of sensors in order to obtain a more accurate view of the scene: very much the same as we rely on our five senses. Multi-Sensor Image Fusion and Its Applications is the first text dedicated to the theory and practice of the registration and fusion of image data, covering such approaches as statistical methods, color-related techniques, model-based methods, and visual information display strategies. After a review of state-of-the-art image fusion techniques, the book provides an overview of fusion algorithms and fusion performance evaluation. The following chapters explore recent progress and practical applications of the proposed techniques to solving problems in such areas as medical diagnosis, surveillance and biometric systems, remote sensing, nondestructive evaluation, blurred image restoration, and image quality assessment. Recognized leaders from industry and academia contribute the chapters, reflecting the latest research trends and providing useful algorithms to aid implementation. Supplying a 28-page full-color insert, Multi-Sensor Image Fusion and Its Applications clearly demonstrates the benefits and possibilities of this revolutionary development. It provides a solid knowledge base for applying these cutting-edge techniques to new challenges and creating future advances.

It should come as no surprise that viewing things with different sensors produce images that are different. Looking at two or more images side by side may well not provide enough information to the brain for a combined or fused image to appear. This book is on computer processing of multiple images to present a combined image that provides a human with an enhanced picture containing more useful information than the two separate images.

Blum and Liu are editors of the book. They are contributors to some of the chapters, the other chapters are written by an international group of experts in various fields. Contributors come from Canada, France, England, Czech Republic, Australia, The Netherlands, and all around the US.

The book is a combined technical work on producing fused images along with application notes on the use of fused images in various applications such as medical imagery, surveillance and navigation, various industrial applications and more. There are twenty eight pages of color images most of which contain multiple images.

This book represents the state of the art in image fusion as it exists today.

            Book Description

This book presents a unique combination of mobile robots and embedded systems, from introductory to intermediate level. It is structured in three parts, dealing with embedded systems (hardware and software design, actuators, sensors, PID control, multitasking), mobile robot design (driving, balancing, walking, and flying robots), and mobile robot applications (mapping, robot soccer, genetic algorithms, neural networks, behavior-based systems, and simulation). The book is written as a text for courses in computer science, computer engineering, IT, electronic engineering, and mechatronics, as well as a guide for robot hobbyists and researchers.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure chest of ideas.......2006-08-27

This book is a real treasure chest of ideas for an amateur robot builder. It does not show solutions in enough detail to copy them, but it points you in the right direction.

For me some of the most interesting topics covered were:
            - Motorola M68332 based general purpose robot controller board,
            - Introduction to different robot competitions,
            - Simplified image processing solutions,
            - Walking robots and evolutionary programs to control the gait,
            - Examples of real life robots.

4 out of 5 stars Comments to Embedded Robotics.......2006-07-31

Hi, so far the book is a little dissapointeing, because is to much centered to a commercial hardware (EyeCon) that is somewhat hard to adquiere to a group that has a very low budget for that kind of projects... but is important to have a reference. That is why it deserve a 3. But also supply a very important source of information for sensors and actuators design. That is why i gave an average of 4 stars.

Best regards, and thanks for all the effort you made for me enjoying this book.
