Book Description

Ideal for courses in aerosol science or particle technology, Smoke, Dust, and Haze: Fundamentals of Aerosol Dynamics, 2/e, is the only modern text that focuses on aerosol dynamics--the study of the factors that determine changes in the distribution of aerosol properties with respect to particle size. It covers fundamental concepts, experimental methods, and a wide variety of applications. Using the aerosol dynamics approach, the author integrates a broad range of topics including stochastic processes, aerosol transport theory, coagulation, formation of agglomerates, classical nucleation theory, and the synthesis of ultrafine solid particles. The book makes extensive use of scaling concepts and dimensional analysis and emphasizes physical and physicochemical interpretations. Basic concepts are illustrated by applications to many fields including air pollution control, the atmospheric sciences, microcontamination in the semiconductor industry, and the industrial manufacture of powders, pigments, additives, and nanoparticles. Revised and expanded, this second edition features new chapters on the kinetics of agglomeration of noncoalescing particles and the fundamentals of aerosol reactor design. It covers the effects of turbulence on coagulation and gas-to-particle conversion and also discusses the formation of primary particles by the collision-coalescence mechanism. The chapter on the atmospheric aerosol has been completely rewritten within the aerosol dynamics framework. Its basic approach and topicality make Smoke, Dust, and Haze: Fundamentals of Aerosol Dynamics, 2/e, an essential guide for both students and researchers.

    Book Description

This concise professional reference provides a fundamental framework for the design and operation of solid-state fermentation bioreactors, enabling researchers currently working at laboratory scale to scale-up their processes. After surveying the main bioreactor types currently used in solid-state fermentation, it focuses on the mathematical modeling of bioreactors, which is covered in three parts. Firstly, the book shows how to plan a research program in order to characterize the growth kinetics in a manner appropriate for incorporation into bioreactor models. Secondly, it addresses the heat and mass transfer phenomena that occur in solid-state fermentation bioreactors and the mathematical expressions that are used to describe them. Thirdly it demonstrates, through a number of case studies, how mathematical models can be used in the optimization of bioreactor performance. The final part of the book addresses several issues closely related with bioreactor operation, namely process monitoring equipment, process control strategies and the selection of an appropriate air preparation system.

        Book Description

Since the middle of the last century, computing power has increased sufficiently that the direct numerical approximation of Maxwell's equations is now an increasingly important tool in science and engineering. Parallel to the increasing use of numerical methods in computational electromagnetism there has also been considerable progress in the mathematical understanding of the properties of Maxwell's equations relevant to numerical analysis. The aim of this book is to provide an up to date and sound theoretical foundation for finite element methods in computational electromagnetism. The emphasis is on finite element methods for scattering problems that involve the solution of Maxwell's equations on infinite domains. Suitable variational formulations are developed and justified mathematically. An error analysis of edge finite element methods that are particularly well suited to Maxwell's equations is the main focus of the book. The methods are justified for Lipschitz polyhedral domains that can cause strong singularities in the solution. The book finishes with a short introduction to inverse problems in electromagnetism.

        5 out of 5 stars "The Bible".......2002-09-05

If you are an undergraduate (or even post-grad) student in any of the physical sciences then the best book you could ever buy for getting on top of math would have to be this book. Having come from a shaky back-ground in math ( it used to be my worst subject and my pet-hate) the book laid out the theory and the knowledge requisite for most, if not all, the theory behind physical chemistry. In fact this book is better than any undergrad math text I have ever come across and it's a special treat for the chem student because he goes over things you learn without really knowing why and he reinforces things later on- he really does build on concepts so that you don't forget them a week later. He also makes the subject interesing with little anecdotes and such- but not the type you come across in your standard highschool text with a grey drawing of a dead bloke in a bedsheet. In short this book is the bible for any student wanting to do a chem major and succeed in research- it's all you know you need and all you won't know you'll need til after you've read it.

5 out of 5 stars a good book to have when you're taking pchem.......2002-01-17

I initially got this book because my math skills were shaky and being a chem major, I knew that shaky math skills would not suffice. I took a calculus course and glanced through the book, but didn't really use it so much. Then I took pchem. This book was a life saver, seriously. All the math and the equations that seem to come from nowhere in pchem books are deeply explored, derived and explained in an understandable fashion. If I didn't have this book, I would have been lost with my problem sets. Many of the examples they give in this book were actually problems that we had to do for class. This book explained pchem alot better than my pchem textbook (McQuarrie) and it is not even a pchem text per se!
I highly reccommend this book to anyone who is going to take pchem or needs to learn how to relate math to chemistry. This book, unlike many text books actually succeeds in relating math to chemistry and shows how math can be a tool to help solve problems. Many other chemistry text books I've seen just show you an equation and say "hey, you can use this equation to solve the particle in a box" but haven you ever wondered, why? Now I am not a theoretical type person, but I did enjoy this book becasue it explained where all these equations were coming from so that you didn't just try and memorize them and pray that the ones you did memorize would be the ones on the test. This book helped me to understand what the significance of these equations were, and how I could relate them to other problems. All in all, a very good investment.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Science and Engineering.......2001-09-08

Steiner lays out years of mathematics in a very concise easy-to-find way. If you're looking for unit conversions, basic algebraic equations, line integrals, matrices, or numerical methods, it's in there. What really makes this text so useful is that after dealing with a particular type of equation, he'll have a couple examples and practice problems (which have solutions in the back).

In addition to a clear exposition of the math, Steiner does a well-balanced job of applying the math to real scientific problems in chemistry and physics. For instance, in the section dealing with implicit solutions and inverses, Steiner shows how those algebraic methods can be used on the Van der Waals equation. He doesn't overdo these problems or make the book's scope too narrow--you don't have to be a chemist to enjoy this book--but these "real world" examples really do help you make sense of math, and make this book a very useful, enjoyable resource.

          Book Description

All life is chemical. That fact underpins the developing field of ecological stoichiometry, the study of the balance of chemical elements in ecological interactions. This long-awaited book brings this field into its own as a unifying force in ecology and evolution. Synthesizing a wide range of knowledge, Robert Sterner and Jim Elser show how an understanding of the biochemical deployment of elements in organisms from microbes to metazoa provides the key to making sense of both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

After summarizing the chemistry of elements and their relative abundance in Earth's environment, the authors proceed along a line of increasing complexity and scale from molecules to cells, individuals, populations, communities, and ecosystems. The book examines fundamental chemical constraints on ecological phenomena such as competition, herbivory, symbiosis, energy flow in food webs, and organic matter sequestration. In accessible prose and with clear mathematical models, the authors show how ecological stoichiometry can illuminate diverse fields of study, from metabolism to global change.

Set to be a classic in the field, Ecological Stoichiometry is an indispensable resource for researchers, instructors, and students of ecology, evolution, physiology, and biogeochemistry.

From the foreword by Peter Vitousek:

"[T]his book represents a significant milestone in the history of ecology. . . . Love it or argue with it--and I do both--most ecologists will be influenced by the framework developed in this book. . . . There are points to question here, and many more to test . . . And if we are both lucky and good, this questioning and testing will advance our field beyond the level achieved in this book. I can't wait to get on with it."

5 out of 5 stars Hardcore description of how and why molecules move and react.......1997-04-24

An ideal reference for those intimate with the field of reacting and non-reacting "fluids". This is not a text-book for those faint-of-heart when it comes to mathematics and "techno-babble", but rather a comprehensive treatment of physical properties and interactions that govern gaseous and liquid phase molecules.

"Molecular Theory of Gases and Liquids" is unique in its cross-disciplinary approach to each aspect of molecular phenomena. Chemists, Physicists, and Engineers alike will find its content, the corresponding discussions, and at least one of the various approaches to the derivation of each concept invaluable.

Most disciplines have a text that is casually refered to as its "bible". As a physical chemist studying the interactions of high- temperature reacting fluid flows, (a glorified way of saying combustion), I heartily recommend "Molecular Theory of Gases and Liquids" to that status.

          Book Description

Applied Colloid and Surface Chemistry is a broad introduction to this interdisciplinary field. Taking a genuinely applied approach, with applications drawn from a wide range of industries, this book will meet the demands of the student and professional currently working in the field.

The text includes keynote sections written by practicing industrial research scientists, bringing to the reader a wealth of real industrial examples. These examples range from water treatment through to soil management as well as examples taken from the coatings and photographic industries. To aid accessibility, some of the more demanding mathematical derivations are separated from the main text, enabling them to be avoided as required.

With carefully structured chapters, starting with learning objectives, and containing tutorial questions with answers and explanatory notes, this text is invaluable for undergraduates taking a first course on colloid and surface chemistry. This book will also be suitable to postgraduates and professionals, who need an up-to-date account of the subject.

This book draws together contributions from cell and developmental biologists, structural biologists, geneticists and clinical scientists aimed at a better understanding of the cellular and molecular basis of these diseases. Topics include: How nuclear structure and location within a nucleus affect gene expression Chromatin organization and cell differentiation The nature of the interactions between the nuclear envelope and the cytoskeleton The extent to which the cytoskeleton mediates communication between the cell membrane and nucleus in regulating gene expression and whether disruption of such communication might underlie the disease processes It is hoped that a better understanding of the mechanisms leading to disease pathogenesis may ultimately lead to more rational and appropriate treatments.

This book claims that it has taken a genuine applied approach, with applications drawn from a wide range of industries, and thus the book meets the demands of the student and professional currently working in the field.
Further, it is claimed that the text includes keynote sections written by practicing industrial research scientists.
It is also supposed to be useful for undergraduates taking a first course on colloid and surface chemistry.
But how does the book look like after one has bought it based on these claims.
Let us first consider the Figures as used throughout the book.
As in any technical book, the figure is supposed to catch the eye such that the reader is inspired to read the text.
In this book most of the Figures are very poorly drawn and some even are incorrect. Thus a reader has to redraw these figures in order to make any sense at all.
But who wants to redraw Figures in a book after one has paid over 100 USD.
The text looses its value if the Figures are poor in details.
Thus one may conclude that the book in its present form should never have been launched with these poor qualities.
It is not recommended to waste money on such a poor quality book, especially considering that one of the authors is a very well-known scientist.

2 out of 5 stars Not a good textbook for self-learning.......2005-08-14

I have a Ph.D.degree in physics but working in chemistry. I wanted to learn more about surface and colloid chemistry. This book is concise and reasonable price with a lot of nice conceptual figures/photos. So, I thought this might be a good book to start learning about this topic by myself. Also authors said they wrote this book for 3rd year undergraduate students.

I bought this book but it turned out to be very frustrating textbook,,,,,,,,,, I was stuck even at the beginning of chapter 2. A lot of formula, new technical words, and new concepts are suddenly introduced without explanation, sometimes even without telling what the definition is! For example, character of “gamma” seems to represent surface tension. But I could not find any clear description/definition about gamma in chapter 1 and 2. How can we understand new formula or technical words without explanation/definition? At chapter 2, surface tension is discussed. But authors never clearly describe what surface tension is. Then suddenly they start derivation of Laplace pressure equation. Again, Laplace pressure is introduced without enough explanation about its physical meaning and importance. I could guess the meaning and importance of the Laplace pressure, but if I were undergraduate student, I am 100% sure that I would be stuck here totally. At the same time, authors are discussing spherical bubble, but in the formula, they suddenly introduce “two” radius of R1 and R2 although until then they are discussing completely spherical bubble! It is enough to confuse undergraduate students. Organization of the text is also quite poor. This textbook is not like “telling a story”. I had to read text for several times to understand what authors try to tell.

It is pity, although this textbook contains a lot of nice conceptual figures/photos, text and organization are quite poor.

4 out of 5 stars A very nice refresher book..........2000-11-17

The truth is that many US chemists (hell, all chemists) are lazy when it comes to math. (Ok, so maybe some theory guys aren't, but they all dress in black and have bad attitudes or big egos so they aren't your garden variety chemist...) Well, the good news is that this book can really help to remedy some of those situations... Many of the very useful topics are presented in a concise manner and therefore in a non-threatening and appealing way... Very good as a first reference and also helps with some radial function transforms and the like (Jacobians and etc...) My only major problem with the book is that it doesn't have anything on statistics, but then again, most analytical books give a good appendix on that subject anyway, so you can find it there...

5 out of 5 stars Great math companion for the physical chemistry student.......1999-06-17

As a graduate student in the pharmaceutical sciences, I found this book to be a comprehensive and easy-to-use study companion. It reviews fundamental mathematical concepts and relationships (i.e. integration and differential calculus, vectors etc.) along with applied examples encountered in physical chemistry. The book is very useful if the student pursues development of mathematical models for his/her research.
