Book Description

Sol-Gel Science presents the physical and chemical principles of the sol-gel process at a level suitable for graduate students and practitioners in the field. This book defines sol-gel rather broadly as the preparation of ceramic materials by preparation of a sol, gelation of the sol, and removal of the solvent. The sol may be produced from inorganic or organic precursors (e.g., nitrates or alkoxides) and may consist of dense oxide particles of polymeric clusters. Brinker expands the definition of ceramics to include organically modified materials, often called ORMOSILs or CERAMERs. The emphasis of the author' treatment is on the science, rather than the technology, of sol-gel processing. Although a chapter on applications is included, more detailed discussion is available in proceedings of conferences and in the recent collection of articles, Sol-Gel Technology for thin films, Fibers, Preforms, Electronics, and Specialty Shapes (Noyes, Park Ridge, N.J., 1988), edited by professor Lisa Klein.

5 out of 5 stars A Compendium of Knowledge about Sol Gel Science.......2000-10-11

Perhaps it's trite to say this, but Brinker and Scherer's _Sol Gel Science_ is *the* indispensible desktop reference for the sol-gel chemist. Though now over a decade old, the topics covered (only a smattering of which are mentioned in the editorial review above) are so fundamental that it remains one of the most often cited sol-gel references, both in texts and refereed journal articles. The layout of the book takes the reader through the entire sol-gel formation process, from reaction to casting to drying, curing and other post-modificiations, with a chapter devoted to each step - permitting this book either to be read cover-to-cover (for the interested newcomer or as a text for a course in sol-gel science) or to be referenced as necessary by the more familiar reader.

C. Jeffrey Brinker, now affiliated with Sandia National Laboratories as well as the University of New Mexico, remains the preeminent researcher and one of the most-often cited authors in his field, continuing research on self-assembled nanostructures, porosity-tailored materials, organic-inorganic hybrids, and related topics.

George W. Scherer, professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of Princeton University, also maintains a professional involvement in sol-derived gels, glasses, and ceramics, among other areas of interest, and is the author of several patents, as well as innumerable scientific papers, in these fields.

Though more-recent texts may be more up-to-date in terms of research cited, especially areas pertinent to nanotechnology, this book's position as a compendium of knowledge in the field of sol-gel science has not diminished with age and is highly reccomended.

Book Description

Originally published in 1962, this was the first book to explore teh identification of organic compounds using spectroscopy. It provides a thorough introduction to the three areas of spectrometry most widely used in spectrometric identification: mass spectrometry, infrared spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. A how-to, hands-on teaching manual with considerably expanded NMR coverage--NMR spectra can now be intrepreted in exquisite detail. This book:

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent excercises..........2006-03-12

It's an OK book if you are a novice in the Spectroscopy determination area, but a very nice book if it's going to be used as a reference book. It's very handy and explains the principles of the Spectroscopic and Spectrometric determinations in a very understandable way. Moreover, the excercises are challenging, making this book and excellent tool for those students interested in learning how to determine structures out of some spectra, although the spectra sometimes are so clean that they don't correspond with the one's that are taken by routine. The weak points of this book are the IR chapter and the lack of a UV chapter explaining various useful techniques for structural determination such as ORD and CD. The NMR section is just OK, but there are more details to be explained in the 2-D NMR NOESY, TOCSY and ROESY. I think the Mass Chapters are the best that any single book has offered to me so far to understand quite easily how powerful is the GCMS as a tool for the Structural Determination of Organic Compounds.

3 out of 5 stars Reference vs. Teaching Material.......2005-03-05

This book has wonderful charts and tables for quick referencing, however it is sorely lacking in demonstrations and worked out examples for students new to the subject. The chapters are painfully slow and complex when explaining the theory behind the spectrometric methods and effects on classes of molecules. In short, don't use this book to learn the material unless you already know it. It is a comprehensive reference, but not an effective textbook to teach from.

3 out of 5 stars Great material, regular text..........2001-07-17

The book is subdivided into only 3 of the 4 classical methods for spectrometric identification of compounds: IR, MS, and finally NMR (covering 1H, 13C and very little of 19F and 31P). UV is left out in this edition, so maybe getting a hold of the old edition's UV chapter (which is extremely well-written) might be desired. The MS and the IR chapters are also well-written and explained out. It is in the main technique (NMR) that the author fails to deliver the subject in a straightforward manner and lacks what I think is most important in this field: a large number of exercises and problems.

5 out of 5 stars An Important book.......2000-05-10

This book provide a the basis of the fundamentals of Spectroscopy in many fields (IR, HNMR, CNMR, DEPT, COSY, HMBC, HMQC, TOCSY, MS, and much more) It has many real problems in an special chapter. And the most important, it has a lot of important tables and spectrums.

3 out of 5 stars Good in NMR Spectra analysis information, but weak elsewhere.......1999-11-19

This book lacked information in my opinion. Silverstein started a good project but just didn't give enough information about IR interpretation, mass spec, C-13 NMR, etc. He focussed on 2-D NMR a great deal, and I believe that there are much better textbooks on this subject.

Product Description

This is the first modern textbook, written in the 21st century, to make explicit the many connections between physical organic chemistry and critical fields such as organometallic chemistry, materials chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, and biochemistry. In the latter part of the 20th century, the field of physical organic chemistry went through dramatic changes, with an increased emphasis on noncovalent interactions and their roles in molecular recognition, supramolecular chemistry, and biology; the development of new materials with novel structural features; and the use of computational methods. Contemporary chemists must be just as familiar with these newer fields as with the more established classical topics. This completely new landmark text is intended to bridge that gap. In addition to covering thoroughly the core areas of physical organic chemistry – structure and mechanism – the book will escort the practitioner of organic chemistry into a field that has been thoroughly updated . The foundations and applicabilities of modern computational methods are also developed. Written by two distinguished researchers in this field, Modern Physical Organic Chemistry can serve as a text for a year-long course targeted to advanced undergraduates or first-year graduate students, as well as for a variety of shorter courses on selected aspects of the field. It will also serve as a landmark new reference text, and as an introduction to many of the more advanced topics of interest to modern researchers. An accompanying Student Solutions Manual will become available.

The book arrived on time in a good shape as I hoped it to be. I'm very glad I choose to purchase book from the seller and I will highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Text for Grad School.......2006-12-09

I completed my first semester of Physical Organic chemistry using this textbook and I am pleased beyond words. The book is very well written, yet sophisticated enough to help advance new graduate students like myself to the level that our Professors understand concepts at. The problems at the end of the chapter are very useful and the answer guide (sold seperately) explains them quite well.

The book is also binded very solidly. The other people in my research group keep this text on their lab bookshelfs for reference and I have no doubt that I will do the same.

5 out of 5 stars The long wait is over..........2006-09-19

Phys. Org. Chem. has always been one of my favourite subjects. As I graduated from school and college into university for my master's, I began to realise that it represents not so much a separate topic as a philosophy and approach; to treat chemical and biological systems from the perspective of structure, conformation, and reactivity, which are after all the most fundamental aspects of any such system. I reached the conclusion that phys org chem is a truly interdisciplinary framework, and any one who has a solid background in it can be a good computational chemist, synthetic organic chemist, and/or bioorganic/biochemist.

Unfortunately, all the classic phys org books until now have been of the 'pure' kind, focusing on mechanism and reactivity, but not discussing the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, especially for biological systems. My wait is over; Modern Physical Organic Chemistry by Dennis Dougherty and Eric Anslyn has completely and satisfactorily reinvented the phys org chem textbook. Now, one can look to a wholesome treatment of phys org as a multidisciplinary, fundamental, and exciting approach to both chemistry and biology. The book is worth its price, and covers the gamut of topics, including basic ones like mechanisms and bonding, but also is interspersed with lots of boxes and discussions explaining the applications of basic phys org concepts to host guest systems, proteins and nucleic acids, strained molecules, and materials science. Fantastic reference. It should make you a well-rounded chemist, which is the need of the day in today's era of collaborative research.

    Book Description

Since its original appearance in 1977, Advanced Organic Chemistry has found wide use as a text providing broad coverage of the structure, reactivity and synthesis of organic compounds. The Fourth Edition provides updated material but continues the essential elements of the previous edition. The material in Part A is organized on the basis of fundamental structural topics such as structure, stereochemistry, conformation and aromaticity and basic mechanistic types, including nucleophilic substitution, addition reactions, carbonyl chemistry, aromatic substitution and free radical reactions. The material in Part B is organized on the basis of reaction type with emphasis on reactions of importance in laboratory synthesis. As in the earlier editions, the text contains extensive references to both the primary and review literature and provides examples of data and reactions that illustrate and document the generalizations. While the text assumes completion of an introductory course in organic chemistry, it reviews the fundamental concepts for each topic that is discussed.
The Fourth Edition updates certain topics that have advanced rapidly in the decade since the Third Edition was published, including computational chemistry, structural manifestations of aromaticity, enantioselective reactions and lanthanide catalysis.
The two parts stand alone, although there is considerable cross-referencing. Part A emphasizes quantitative and qualitative description of structural effects on reactivity and mechanism. Part B emphasizes the most general and useful synthetic reactions. The focus is on the core of organic chemistry, but the information provided forms the foundation for future study and research in medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry, biological chemistry and physical properties of organic compounds.

The New Revised 5th Edition will be available shortly. For details, click on the link in the right-hand column.

5 out of 5 stars Comments on Carey 2007.......2007-08-25

I have been using this book since the first edition, in my postgraduation courses and each time, it is better. The 5th edition introduced aspects that we awere longing for, like, for example, new achievements in the area of aromaticity and improvements in the first chapter. The best improvement was attached to problems solving (despite being not so friendly) and 3D figures. A CD should be added to the next edition.

    3 out of 5 stars Undergraduate text.......2006-10-30

This text is good for an advanced undergraduate course. It is a pretty good reference, with two major problems:

    1) The book is a flimsy paperback. Other paperbacks I have can withstand usage just fine, but after 1 month the text was in two pieces. It feel apart at the binding. I never even brought it to class, it sat on the bookshelf and fell apart after twice a week readings.

    2) The solutions are presented as references to journal articles. I am not too shy of searching for articles, but when you are in a crunch it would be nice to not have to search through 10 pages of tangential information to find the one data or conclusion you need in order to verify the accuracy of your work.

Besides for that, it worked just fine for my advanced undergrad course in physical organic chemistry. I did have to make frequent references to other sources for more in-depth information, but when study time came it worked better than the myriad organic texts available at my library.

2 out of 5 stars save your money for Physical Organic Chemistry - by Dougherty & Anslyn .......2006-04-10

This book is written at the undergraduate level. The figures are a joke. It's a paperback and will fall apart. If you are in graduate school; buy the text by Anslyn & Dougherty instead. It is a nice hard bound book, durable & weighs a ton. Its worth the money and the weight in your backpack.

    1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2005-09-16

It is now more than a month after I was supposed to receive this book and I have not gotten it yet, what the hell is going on.

    4 out of 5 stars Update of a Classic.......2003-11-12

This is an update on a classic text that has been used by many graduate and advanced undergraduate students. The core of the book is still an excellent survey of older literature and of enormous use to students. There are also many excellent problems. Unfortunately, there is not as much new material or references in some sections. I found I had to frequently supplement the text with current readings. The use of modern theory is especially lacking.

    Book Description

The features of this book which will be of special interest to academic organic chemists are the introduction (Chapter 1), which presents a short course on the concepts and language of heterogeneous catalysis, covers organic reaction mechanisms of hydrogenation (Chapter 2), hydrogenolysis (Chapter 4), and oxidation (Chapter 6), a presents problems and solutions specific for running heterogeneous catalytic organic reactions in solution. These materials can supplement advanced chemistry courses.

Most synthetic organic chemists use a variety of "protecting groups" which they attach to functional groups (reactive groups of atoms) while some reaction is being conducted on another part of the molecule. These protecting groups prevent reactions of the functional groups during other reactions and are removed later by a heterogeneous catalytic method called hydrogenolysis. One unique feature of this book, not found in other books on catalysis, is an exhaustive chapter (Chapter 4) on hydrogenolysis, which is dredged from the recent synthetic literature published by modern organic chemists. Academic organic chemists should find this chapter extremely useful and may wish to adopt the book as a supplement for advanced organic chemistry courses designed for seniors and for graduate students. It will also be useful for professors and their research groups engaged in synthetic organic chemistry.

Many academic organic chemists are not aware of recent advances in heterogeneous enantioselective catalysis (Chapter 3) or in selective low temperature, liquid phase heterogeneous catalytic oxidations by hydrogen peroxide (Chapter 6). These specialty topics are timely and may be new to academic organic chemists and can be used to supplement their advanced courses.

Several features of this book will also be of special interest to industrial chemists who are unfamiliar with heterogeneous catalysis. Many good organic chemists are hire by industry. They synthesize a new compound using standard organic synthetic techniques but are informed by their supervisor that they must convert some of their synthetic steps into heterogeneous catalytic steps. They may not have been exposed to heterogeneous catalysis and have few places to turn. This book offers them a crash course in heterogeneous catalysis as well as many examples of reactions and conditions with which they can start their search.

Those industrial organic chemists already familiar with heterogeneous catalysis will find this book useful as a reference to many examples in the recent literature. They will find recent surface science discoveries correlated with heterogeneous catalysis or organic reactions and mechanistic suggestions designed to stimulate innovative nontraditional thinking about organic reactions on surfaces.

5 out of 5 stars Heterogeneous Hydrogenation Made Accesible.......2000-04-08

For the advanced organic chemistry researcher who is entering the wonderful world of heterogeneous catalysis in general - and heterogeneous hydrogenation in particular - there is no single resource such as this to guide him. Working in the field of heterogeneous hydrogenation myself, I had felt that a modern, up-to-date, readable text was long overdue. Heterogeneous Catalysis in Organic Chemistry has all of these attributes and much much more. It will help you o brave chemist to safely navigate the enormous and often useless primary literature and reach what you were looking for. Be that experimental details for a particular transformation, current developments in the scope of the field, understanding of the underlying theory. I strongly reccomend all organic synthesis research departments obtain a copy. It will be invaluable for the whole range of staff, from the first year inexperienced graduate student nervously exploring the field, to the research group leader who wants to update his knowledge and understanding, painlesly, accurately and quickly.

      Book Description

This volume is devoted to the various aspects of theoretical organic chemistry. In the nineteenth century, organic chemistry was primarily an experimental, empirical science. Throughout the twentieth century, the emphasis has been continually shifting to a more theoretical approach. Today, theoretical organic chemistry is a distinct area of research, with strong links to theoretical physical chemistry, quantum chemistry, computational chemistry, and physical organic chemistry.

The objective in this volume has been to provide a cross-section of a number of interesting topics in theoretical organic chemistry, starting with a detailed account of the historical development of this discipline and including topics devoted to quantum chemistry, physical properties of organic compounds, their reactivity, their biological activity, and their excited-state properties.

      Book Description

This well-illustrated and well-referenced book provides a systematic introduction to the modern aspects of the topographical stereochemistry of coordination compounds, which are made up of metal ions surrounded by other non-metal atoms, ions and molecules.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It is a good book but difficult to read........1999-04-18

Zelewsky's book covers an important topic which is typically not covered in detail in graduate classes in inorganic chemistry. Although the book is somewhat difficult to read, which is probably because the author is not a native English speaker, it is worth wading through.

5 out of 5 stars A concise and beautifully written book on stereochemistry........1997-11-19

The book explains the modern aspects of stereochemistry of coordination compounds including nomenclature, chirality elements, isomer counting, helices, chains and knots, gives an account of the historical background and includes many 3D-figures as stereograms. All figures and additional material are available on the internet. The book is well suited for undergraduates, post-graduates and especially lecturers who can benefit from the supplementary material available. Just colors are missing - but this for the sake of a really affordable price.
