Customer Reviews:
It is a good book but difficult to read........1999-04-18
Zelewsky's book covers an important topic which is typically not covered in detail in graduate classes in inorganic chemistry. Although the book is somewhat difficult to read, which is probably because the author is not a native English speaker, it is worth wading through.
A concise and beautifully written book on stereochemistry........1997-11-19
The book explains the modern aspects of stereochemistry of coordination compounds including nomenclature, chirality elements, isomer counting, helices, chains and knots, gives an account of the historical background and includes many 3D-figures as stereograms. All figures and additional material are available on the internet. The book is well suited for undergraduates, post-graduates and especially lecturers who can benefit from the supplementary material available. Just colors are missing - but this for the sake of a really affordable price.

Bible of Stereo.......2006-10-06
This is still the single best book for learning stereochemistry, which is one of the most fundamental aspects of organic structure and synthesis, and it became an instant classic when it was first published in the 60s. Stereochemistry is a topic that comes up again and again in an important manner no matter what kind of research in chemistry you are doing. Ernest Eliel was probably the foremost expert in stereochemistry of his time, and even now, there is nothing which compares with his book. Luckily, he has updated it periodically. It now includes an excellent section on stereoselective synthesis, which drives research in both academics and industry. The earlier chapters on the stereochemistry of acyclic and cyclic systems (especially six membered rings) are updated and still remain the clearest explanations of conformation and reactivity that I have seen. They contain very basic and extremely important concepts which drive the reactivity of organic molecules in any reaction, including those in biological systems. I have this book on my shelf for six years now, and so do most of my professors. And we find that no matter what kind of reesearch question we are pondering, we often keep coming back to 'Eliel'. An indispensable reference.
A Classsic.......2000-04-19
This is a classic book by a world-renowned expert. I am a practicing organic chemist, and this book has never failed to answer even the most obscure questions I have had about stereochemistry. It is highly recommended as an indispensible reference on the subject.
Book Description
A short historical introduction serves to introduce many common stereochemical terms used throughout the book. Chapter two is an account of the structures of simple unstrained organic molecules followed by examples of strained molecules. The third chapter deals with conformational analysis of acyclic and carbocyclic molecules, ending with a short exposition of molecular mechanics. Chapter four is about stereoisomerism in molecules and compounds. A full description of enantiomerism and diastereomerism is followed by an explanation of the nomenclature for absolute and relative configurations of molecules and for topism. A short chapter describes racemates, their resolution, and methods for determining enantiomeric purity. The book concludes with a survey of stereoselective and stereospecific reactions, including the use of chiral catalysts and auxiliaries, rules for predicting stereoselectivity, and double asymmetric synthesis.

Book Description
A unique guide to variable temperature CD spectroscopy and its application in organic chemistry
This timely, original, thought-provoking work looks at organic stereochemistry from the perspective of circular dichroism (CD), using variable temperature CD spectroscopy to determine the conformation or absolute configuration of chiral molecules. With an emphasis on the analysis of optically active ketones and the carbonyl chromophore, the authors demonstrate the advantages of this highly sensitive spectroscopic tool for obtaining stereochemical information in diverse areas of organic chemistry, biochemistry, and medicinal/pharmaceutical chemistry. They combine detailed examples of stereochemical analysis with clear, thorough presentations, correlating chiroptical data with molecular mechanics calculations as well as data from NMR spectroscopy and other spectroscopic techniques. In addition, they provide a systematic survey of the professional literature, featuring an extraordinary collection of original CD spectra run at varying temperatures. Coverage includes:
* Chiroptical measurements: CD and ORD (Optical Rotatory Dispersion)
* Conformational analysis of compounds ranging from simple cyclic ketones to polycyclics
* Conjugated and homoconjugated systems
* Stereochemistry of the carbon-carbon double bond
* Stereochemistry from exciton coupling of two or more chromophores
* An interesting historical account of the development of stereochemical concepts
Book Description
This clear and concise text is concerned with the reactions used in stereoselective organic synthesis. It sets out to consider the general principles upon which such reactions are founded, especially stereoelectronic effects, and how these are applied to a wide range of stereospecific and stereoselective organic reactions used in organic synthesis today. The general topics covered include: reactions of carbonyl compounds, aldol reactions, additions to C-C double bonds, oxidation and reduction, rearrangements, and enzyme catalysed hydrolysis. Reactions whose stereoselectivity is either substrate controlled, reagent controlled or controlled by a catalyst are covered, and where appropriate, examples of their application in organic synthesis are provided. Fully illustrated throughout, with set problems and suggestions for further reading to accompany each chapter, this informative text will be an invaluable study aid for all undergraduate chemistry students. Undergraduates in related subjects studying chemistry to second year level or higher will also find this book useful.
Book Description
Organic Synthesis: Strategy and Control is the long-awaited sequel to Stuart Warren’s bestseller Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach, which looked at the planning behind the synthesis of compounds. This unique book now provides a comprehensive, practical account of the key concepts involved in synthesising compounds and focuses on putting the planning into practice.
The two themes of the book are strategy and control: solving problems either by finding an alternative strategy or by controlling any established strategy to make it work. The book is divided into five sections that deal with selectivity, carbon-carbon single bonds, carbon-carbon double bonds, stereochemistry and functional group strategy.
- A comprehensive, practical account of the key concepts involved in synthesising compounds
- Takes a mechanistic approach, which explains reactions and gives guidelines on how reactions might behave in different situations
- Focuses on reactions that really work rather than those with limited application
- Contains extensive, up-to-date references in each chapter
Students and professional chemists familiar with Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach will enjoy the leap into a book designed for chemists at the coalface of organic synthesis.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent sequel - but it is a SEQUEL.......2007-08-30
The book is a tremendous follow up to the original work - Disconnection Approach.
However, it does assume you have significant prior knowledge on retrosynthetic analysis. Basically you should have read their 1984 book first.
This is my only complaint as that book is dated and I would have preferred an updated version so that I wouldn't have to read a dated book only to have it 'corrected' in the sequel.
This sequel however is BEEFY. Big book with great stuff. Very current...
Should have just made it even BEEFIER and included the updated version of the first book.
