Informative.......2007-08-23
I thought it very interesting and wasn't really aware of what I was doing to my body. I have since with a couple of my friends revised the way we eat know. No bread (yeast) products have gone past my lips in over a month now. I have also tried different things like seaweed and dulse and just add more protein to my diet. I haven't been able to fit into many things at the beginning of spring/summer but can now. I never feel as full any more and I only eat when hungry not when I just crave something.
thank you so much.
Fat Flush Foods.......2007-07-29
Classic herbs which help to flush fat are flaxseed oil, anise,
cayenne, cinnamon, cumin, fennel seed, garlic and parsley.
Apple seed vinegar, cranberry , B12 and flaxseed oil help to flush
cholesterol. Lemons act as a detoxifier. Lamb acts to stabilizer
blood sugar, as well as salmon and whey protein.
Other fat flush foods are fresh veggies, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage,
cauliflower, jicama (potato and apple cross) and cucumber.
The acquisition would be perfect to supplement any formal diet plan.
As such, it would be a good value for the price charged.
Great information!.......2007-07-15
This book taught me a lot about what foods I should be eating. Very informative and easy to read.
You can't go wrong if you buy it!.......2007-07-13
This is a very useful guide. This book is a collection of foods, supplements, and herbs/spices that Ann Gittleman considers her top fat "flushers." She gives you some background on the item; what the fat flush factors are (Blood Sugar Stabilizer; Cholesterol Zapper; Detoxifier; Diuretic; Energizer; Thermogenic); recommended usage; facts about the item; how to boost the benefits; cooking tips; caution tips. The herb/spices section has been very helpful to me. I know very little about seasoning dishes. Ann Gittleman has helped me a great deal in this department by compiling all this information into a handy guide made especially for fat flushers. You'll find it full of valuable information to help you prepare better meals which in turn helps you to lose weight and keep it off. You can't go wrong if you buy it!
Great Reference Book!.......2007-06-22
I am glad I ordered this book. I refer to it each week to plan my meals. It makes it much easier to stay on a healthy eating track.

Really great wealth of information about healing foods.......2007-05-08
Another great book by Michael Murray. Everyone should have one!
Easy to Read, Comprehensive Reference for the Lay Person.......2006-12-09
Lots of pertinent information, clearly presented. The egg discrepancy may be a typo, but as a former proofreader, I'd say it's unlikely a work of this size won't have one or two...Over all, I'm impressed with the accuracy. I particularly appreciate the appendices in the back. The disease-specific prescriptions are great, too.
Wrong Stance on Important Topic.......2006-05-17
Dr. Murray condons the use of Sucralose and Asparatame, pg 45. There is so much scientific data showing how harmful these pervasive substances are, it is unconscionable to approve their use in ANY way.
There is good info in this book. I can't say I've perused the whole book.
Informative and Helpful.......2006-03-29
"Healing Foods" takes a holistic approach to health, starting with the food we put in our bodies. I found "Healing Foods" helpful in pointing out what kinds of fruit are best bought organic. Organic watermelon for instance is better than conventional watermelon due to its high absorption of pesticides etc. I wouldn't say "Healing Foods" is a bible, but it's a good reference on healthy living. Because it's a reference book and not a guide book, it requires you to have something in mind. If you have say "hazelnuts" in mind and you want to know how best to store them and what they're nutritional value is, then the book is helpful. "Healing Foods" is not, however, a substitute for proper medical attention and especially acute medical care.
Grenerally good book.......2006-01-26
I liked the presentation of the book. It has a list of all different kinds of foods and then gives the benefits.
But, I am not giving this book 5 stars because there is some incorrect or misleading information. For example, the book says (page 8) that the per capita of eggs was 37 in 1909, but according to the Department of Agriculture the per capita was 292.8 (www.ers.usda.gov). That's a big difference!
He mentions phytic acid, but he doesn't say what foods have them or how to deactivate them. (Phytates pull calcium, zinc, and magnisium out of the body. They are found in grains and seeds, and they can be deactivated by sprouting or soaking in water with some yogurt.)
He writes that vitamin B6 helps detoxify estrogen out of the body, but he fails to say that only about 10% of vitamin B6 is absorbed from plant foods while about 100% of B6 is absorbed from animal foods (_AJCN_ 1988: 863-7). The ironic thing is that he says to avoid ALL animal foods (even organic) if one has an estrogen problem.
I'm glad he says usable vitamin B12 is only found in animal foods.
Overall, it's a good book.

"Plastic surgery isn't the only way to keep the aging process at bay. With the proper care you can have fabulous skin in your forties, fifties, sixties and beyond," promises author Nicholas Perricone, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine. In his opening chapters, Perricone explains why skin wrinkles and sags--a combination of factors including the passage of time, stress, poor nutrition, excess alcohol consumption, sleep deprivation, and exposure to cigarette smoke, sunlight, and pollution. Ultimately, however, it all boils down to damage caused by those renegade free radicals.
The bulk of his book is then devoted to a clearly presented skin care regimen that involves oral and topical antioxidant therapy. On the oral front, he emphasizes eating antioxidant foods, such as cantaloupe and dark green leafy vegetables, and avoiding "bad carbohydrates" (high in the glycemic index) such as pasta, sugar, and pancakes. And if you want to look good for a big event within a few days he suggests eating "fish, fish and more fish."
On the topical level, he recommends nutritional skin products such as his DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) cream ("an instant anti-aging face-lift"), a product that can only be purchased at specific places, such as selected Nordstrom stores or www.Sephora.com. Perricone's tie-in with his personal line of "cosmeceuticals" makes the book feel a tad self-serving. (He even includes an index of where to buy his products.) However, most of his advice is based on solid research and common sense, which gives this celebrity doctor credibility as well as a huge following. --Gail Hudson

The supplements and topicals work - try them!.......2007-02-09
I have never seen Dr. Perricone on either PBS or the Oprah show, nor have I ever read or heard of him before reading this book. The info in the book about free radicals, antioxidants and aging as a form of inflammation intrigued me and so I decided to try the supplements and topical cream for a three month experiment. Well...I don't need 3 months to determine that it's working! I can tell you that improvements in skin tone are almost immediate upon using the topical cream. Trust me, this man knows what he's talking about! I am 46 years old and have a few crow's feet and and the start of other wrinkles, so I have tried numerous skin products - including some of the more popular (and expensive) ones that claim to diminish wrinkles. Some of the products I had used in the past produced minimal positive results, but some were too harsh and caused inflammation around my eyes - leaving the skin looking worse than before. The topicals (ALA, C ester, DMAE) suggested by the author are available in a cream that is very lightweight and non-greasy. I agree with the reviews that state Dr. Perricone's product line is quite pricey. Indeed it is, however similar formulations of the supplements and topicals are available elswhere for considerably less. For instance, RevivaLabs makes an affordable ALA, C ester, DMAE cream that's available on-line or at your local GNC store. Not having the big money to fork over for Dr. Perricone's brand, I decided to try the RevivaLabs version of the ALA, C ester, DMAE cream and went to Jewel-Osco to pick up the supplements. BTW, RevivaLabs' cream does not contain any animal ingredients and RevivaLabs does not use animal testing. :o) If I had the money and lived near Dr. Perricone's practice, I'm sure I'd make an appointment to see him (and possibly purchase the products from him as well)! But it's nice to know that he's willing to share his knowledge for the price of a book!
The Doctor's a Bit of a Quack.......2007-02-04
Although Perricone writes that he feels he's always been ahead of the curve, there really isn't anything new here, just presented with a fancy cover that gives a medical image, proposing that there's more here than the usual diet/health book. The doctor is on such an ego trip throughout the book, that it's a turn off. His ego rants tend to undo some of his claims, however. In going on about his fabulous breakfasts and his brilliant daughter, he claims that they are both so amazing that she ends up eating all his food and he leaves the house hungry, which then underscores one of the main staples of healthy living (don't go out into the world hungry, dude). Most of the book is made up of diet and meal plans, and if you've already followed heard the golden rules that have been drummed into every other basis 'this will save your health and life" book of the last 20 years (more activity, less stress, more water, less sun, more anti-oxidants, more vitamin c, etc etc etc etc) you aren't going to get anything new here). The fact that the testimonials, ie, blurbs, on the back of the book don't come from too many bright lights in the medical field is of particular caution. The fact that two of his biggest, longest blurbs/testimonials come from second-level MAKEUP ARTISTS (!) is something to be wary of (and then he thanks them in his acknowledgements for being so nice). One makeup artist here says that given the fact that he must work on the most beautiful faces in the world, he must keep up on the latest in medicine (oh please). The fact that the doctor then says that all the other age-defying products on the market are bogus, and then says that only his are for real, further makes the case that the guy's just out to sell a product that HAS NOT been proven to have more results than any of the other WAY OVER PRICED products on the market. And by the way-- have you checked out the photo of the doctor? Is it a little reminiscent of...I don't know... Michael Jackson? Beware beware beware and save your money. QUACK QUACK QUACK.
His skin products don't work. His diet isn't new (and imperfect).......2006-08-10
It hasn't been clinically proven that Perricone skin products work. My mom (age 46) tried them anyway, and they didn't work.
His advice to stay away from grains (and whatever comes from them, of course) is great, but not new. Yes, farm-raised salmon is screwed up, eat the wild one, but again, I knew that already.
And I disagree with his complicated "system" of taking supplements. If you just eat normal food, like vegetables and fruit, NOT grains and soda, you won't need supplements. The only supplement you need is fish oil, since farm-raised animals that we eat lack necessary fatty acids.
This book is great.......2006-08-08
I loved this book. I knew you should drink lots of water and eat fish. But staying away from pasta... I had no clue. This book is real informative and a must read for anyone concerned with aging. Highly recommended.
CAUTION!.......2006-04-23
What I DID NOT like:
1. Setting your expectations too high. There isn't enough scientific evidence to give Dr. Perricone the right to make such strong clams.
2. The author doesn't mention any controlled double-blind studies that would directly test the effects of his skin products. This means that he either has not done such studies, or the results were negative.
I'm currently testing a free sample of one of his products that "helps smooth fine lines around the mouth", but so far I haven't seen any benefits (it's been 54 days). Moreover, during the first 2 weeks it was giving me burning, redness and scaling (I started by appling it 2-3 times a day, but after a few days reduced it to only once a day). So experiment on your skin only when you can afford to hide - with that inflamed and crusty area on one side of your face.
3. Some of Perricone's tips on nutrition may prove misleading for some people. For example, Alaskan salmon that he praises so much is probably not ideal food due to the environmental pollution and perhaps should not be your major source of protein and even essential fatty acids. Ultra-refined fish oil is a great alternative, but Perricone's fish oil is not ultra-refined and not among the best on the market.
4. I found the "case studies" superfluous, and - in the absence of controls - even annoying and cheap.
I wish Perricone had used that wasted space and time to explain why our conventional diet turned out to be so bad. And he should have included scientific articles on nutrition in his reference list. I'm painfully aware that some nutritionists are still not up-to-date with the modern knowledge on nutrition. That's why I wish the author had elaborated more on the nutritional part of the book.
What I LIKED:
1. Nice job explaining why black people look younger than their white peers. If you are not aware that you should hide from UV light, read this book.
2. Dr. Perricone's tips on nutrition will generally be useful for you if you are not familiar with Paleolithic (or at least The Zone) diet.
What I found to be OK (curious ideas, but haven't been proven to work yet):
1. An introduction to the idea that some antioxidants might slow down aging not only when ingested, but also when applied topically.
2. An introduction to the idea that vitamin C might help collagen production not only when ingested, but also when applied topically in esterified form.

beating cholesterol!.......2007-08-16
If you are like me and cannot take 'statin' drugs, you will appreciate the information in this book. It may tell you some things you already knew, but it also focuses on the natural approach. I think this book is a good reference book for anyone trying to combat inherited high cholesterol and wants alternatives to prescription drugs. I lowered mine from 330 to 220-still high but oh so much better.
Excellent guide to those who want to improve their diet, lower cholesterol.......2007-06-06
Benecol Smart Chews, Caramel, 120 Soft Chews
In addition to taking products like Benecol to lower cholesterol (and, by the way, Benecol is not a medication, but tastes like candy with the benefit of plants), this book can help give you guidelines for lowering your cholesterol and perhaps help you prevent the use of statins.
Controlling Cholestrol The Natural Way.......2005-08-10
This book helped me in some ways, but it was not a simple book to read. I felt that there could have been more information on the exact foods to eat to lower the cholestrol. I will not be using it as an reference
A great introduction to "functional foods" .......2004-09-26
For over 30 years, Dr. Ken Cooper has been a trusted source for insights into health, exercise, and heart disease. Despite its release in 1999, Dr. Cooper's book remains a persuasive and detailed introduction to the use of so-called "functional foods" and "nutriceuticals" to lower cholesterol. These included stanol/sterol esters in butter substitutes, soy products, Phytrol, and oat bran. If you have high cholesterol (LDL or total) and you're unaware of the power these strategies, you've got to read Dr. Cooper's book to get up to speed.
Dr. Cooper's book is also the only other book on the market besides mine that discusses how heart scans can be used as a part of your heart disease prevention program. Although the discussion is only 3 pages long, he details how this exciting technology is proving to be among THE most powerful tools available for detecting hidden coronary plaque.
Only one criticism: Dr. Cooper's discussion of causes of heart attack beyond cholesterol is too brief and you'll have to turn elsewhere for more information. (In all fairness, much new data has become available since publication of this book.) Nonetheless, Controlling Cholesterol the Natural Way remains a principal reference for people who wish to augment their health program with powerful nutritional strategies.
Oustanding advice on a major problem.......2004-09-18
The dangers of heart disease as an early killer if not identified and tackled properly do not need repeating This book is great - after reading numerous items on the subject of cholestrol and preventing heart disease which told you little new and largely duplicate each other, one finishes this book feeling great and that there is real hope without needing to just rely on expensive medications and drugs.
This is because firstly it delivers a much better grasp of all the extensive medical research; secondly it outlines well the simple steps needed to make a real difference, and thirdly it shows how the diferent alternatives can be mixed and tailored (diet, exercise and drugs) for each person's specific case. The most critical benefit (and hence the "natural way" in the title of the book) is his coverage of the new functional foods (both natural and designed) and the way these can make a real difference and how they should be approached and used based on your specific cholestrol problems.
The writer's no nonsense and straight talking style plus his long experience as a doctor treating patients in this area, means that though there is a lot of medical and scientific jargon inevitably, one finishes the book with a much greater general knowledge and appreciation of what is possible plus how with suitable application one can access the compund effect of applying diferent elements of the treatments together. An educating and thought provoking read on an important subject.

I have owned this book for 1 year and it is well worn. The concepts are easy to understand and make sense. I have loaned this to our swim coaches and the mom of our local High school football star. The recipes are easy to prepare and most important...taste good. I really like the section on Team Dinners...lots of great suggestions. Buy two right away because people borrow this little book all the time.
This one gets used.......2005-10-02
This gets more use in our house than any other cookbook . It's very basic and simple. Common sense stuff. I'm not known for my cooking, but this book is easy for me to use and put out quality meals that taste good and that middle school kids will eat. My daughter and her athlete friends are on board (sometimes) with the concept of eating well to improve performance, and they use these recipes themselves. I actually made the granola and it's awesome.
Not what I had in mind........2005-09-12
I was looking for a serious guide to highschool athletes and their nutritional needs. Instead I got a cutesy feed your kid celery sticks type thing.
Got Kids Playing Two Sports? - Need to Optimizing Energy .......2005-09-06
Two kids, soccer and cross country, and problems keeping them fed enough during the fall athletic season. This book helps to identify the best bang-for-the-buck nutritious foods to keep them energized and performing. It details optimum schedules for the pregame/practice as well as post game/practice meals, snacks and hydration. The recipes are contrary to the typical American diet, and so what else is new? Now that they know what complex and simple carbs are and how they affect their levels of energy, at least they know the ice cream for post practice/game recovery isn't the best alternative. At least they are giving the bean dishes a try because they know that they are one of the best nutrient dense foods. The recipes are surprisingly good and I'm going to try more on my kids and expand their horizons.
A good book to use when you are trying to get 3000 calories/day into your children. The school lunch probably isn't going to cut it on game or meet days.

Book Description
With diet and health news making headlines on a regular basis, the ability to separate, identify, and analyze the nutrients, additives, and toxicological compounds found in food and food compounds is more important than ever. This requires proper training in the application of the best methods, as well as knowledgeable efforts to improve existing methods to meet certain analytical needs. Methods of Analysis for Food Components and Additives is a concise guide to both new and established methods for the analysis of food components and additives. The book presents detailed explanations of modern methods of analysis by 32 leading scientists, many of whom personally developed or refined the techniques. They summarize key findings on novel methods of analysis of food components, additives, and contaminants, including the identification, speciation, and determination of components in raw materials and food products. Each chapter is structured to provide a description of the component or additive that can be analyzed, a simple method explanation of how it works, examples of applications, and references for more specific information. This comprehensive volume features all major classes of food components and contaminants, along with components of current interest to the nutraceutical and functional foods industries. It is an essential reference for food scientists and chemists, as well as food manufacturers and researchers interested in the many methods of food analysis.

Customer Reviews:
I've read about him in jounals.......2004-04-21
It seems he's not widely respected by other physicians.
Words of wisdom.......2003-02-06
I devoured Dr. Perricone's Wrinkle Cure book, so I was ecstatic about his latest book, The Perricone Prescription. His advice is so logical and easy to follow it was no wonder I shed weight and felt great, not to mention looking younger, too! His menu plan and anti-aging research is not to miss! The journal was such a helpful tool to follow my progress. That is why I have previously given up on other diet plans. This was easy to follow and successful, too! Thanks Dr. Perricone!
Handiest and my best nutrition tool!.......2003-02-04
The Perricone Prescription Journal is the best tool I have ever used for a nutritional program and it has become as essential to my day as my home keys!! Not only can I follow a daily menu at a glance, but I can keep track of my progress as far as skin and body condition: (my weight, of course but important details too like my pore size and my stress level) as well as jot down my impressions and my feelings every day! Plus I love the fact that the book is light weight and spiral-bound. Extremely handy, full of zen-like sensible advice, I recommend it to anyone with a will to win the anti-aging battle!
It Works!.......2003-01-31
Once I started writing in the Journal the effects were amazing. The daily reports motivated me to stay on the program and the results, noticable with every passing day have been wonderful. I've lost weight, feel great but best of all feel in control. I can honestly say that Dr. Perricone has changed my life for the better.

Customer Reviews:
down to earth for real people.......2007-05-09
I think this is one of my favorite books on eating for health. Some read like encyclopedias and some are so self-righteous you feel guilty for shaving your legs or flying in airplanes. This is humorous and informative and full of ideas you can use right away, with lots of the statistics removed to sidebars so it reads smoothly and conversationally. My copy is well-underlined. My husband grabbed it first when it arrived and read it through in just two days. We already had a pretty healthy diet but there's always more to learn, especially the why's behind the decisions you make in the grocery store aisle.
Good, practical, eye-opening advice.......2006-08-26
Kelly Hayford has written a very practical book with an approach that is much different than other nutrition books that I've read. The idea of eating only real food is so simple and so common-sense that I'm surprised I haven't seen this advice much more from other nutrition experts. I've spent so much time reading labels for sugars, saturated fats, fiber, etc., but have never really given much thought to the long lists of chemicals on most labels. I just figured that they must be okay if they are allowed in food. Since Kelly's book opened my eyes, I have made major changes to the quality of food that I bring into my house, and I feel a lot better about what my children and I are eating. I do find, however, that if I take this type of advice too seriously, I get way too obsessed about food. I just try to follow nutrition advice like this as well as I can. (I will never get to the Level 4 described in the book, but Level 1 or 2 is better than I was a couple of months ago!) I stongly recommend this book for anyone who wants to improve his diet.
No hype, Just Common Sense and Good Information.......2006-03-14
Kelly Hayford's book is one of the best I've read on nutrition and truly natural health care. It is not about vitamins (which, by the way, are not foods, but at best only parts of foods) and it does not contain any strange, "new age" advice. Instead, it is filled with practical information that, if you follow carefully, will do wonders for your health, despite any health condition you may have. Or, if you are fortunate enough to have good health, Kelly Hayford's book is more than just an ounce of prevention - it's a whole guide to it. ALL health problems and diseases are tied to our diet, which is what makes this book the foundation of good health and healing.
finally I get it.......2006-02-01
Kelly Hayford's book "If It's Not Food, Don't Eat It" puts the whole scope of good nutrition together in one easy to read package. Everyone thought reducing fat intake was the key, then low carbs; well know I understand the key is eating good fats, nutritious foods and avoiding food additives, sweeteners and toxic ingredients in processed foods. I love here down-to-earth style.
If It's Not Food, Don't Eat It! .......2005-10-04
This is the only guide you will ever need for how to eat and live in a healthy way. The information was life changing for me and for my patients. Her easy to understand book takes the mystery out of what is and isn't healthy. I found the recipes at the end of the book especially helpful. Kelly shows you how to implement the suggestions into your daily routine immediately. You will not just lose weight, you will gain energy and stamina to enjoy life's passions.

Book Description
The ancient wisdom of Ayurvedic medicine meets up-to-the-minute nutritional science in a clever, colorful guide to matching diet and body type.Marcia Zimmerman takes the mystery and complexity out of healthy eating and makes it simple. Eat Your Colors is a health and nutrition guide based on the idea that everyone fits into one of three body types. Identifying each type by a simple color -- red, yellow, or green -- Zimmerman provides a questionnaire to help readers determine their primary and complementary colors and explains which foods are best for which color types. For example, reds do very well on a vegetarian diet, yellows need some animal protein to feel their best, and greens will reap benefits from pungent foods and strong spices.Eat Your Colors is filled with information on such news-making topics as phytoestrogens, which can reduce the risk of breast and prostate cancer; lutein and zeaxonthin, which protect the eyes of computer users and prevent the common eye disorder macular degeneration; and anthocyanidins, which reduce inflammation in cases of chronic disease. And it offers practical, easy-to-follow advice on: --creating meal plans using the optimal foods for each color--using herbs, spices, sauces, and condiments to balance off-colors--discovering color weaknesses and combating them by eating the right foodsOffering a unique way of thinking about diet, Eat Your Colors will do for body type what Eat Right for Your Type did for blood type.

Body Type Book is Much Better.......2002-05-02
I've purchased and read them all.
This one was surprisingly the least informative.
I found it similar to the others, without clear foundation and thought.
I wouldn't purchase this book. The Body Type Book is a much better buy.
I'm loving 'eating my colors'.......2001-10-03
I'm loving 'eating my colors'. I'm red as can be and all my favorite foods are what I get to eat. I noticed a difference after the first week, more energy, better sleep, and I even lost 4 pounds without using any diet pills.
Thank you so much Marcia for writing this book. I will be buying several more copies and sending them to my friends for Birthday's and other gift ideas.]
And thank you for my better health.

This Physician Says: Buy Eat Your Colors and Read It.......2001-08-13
I am an experienced pediatrician with an interest in nutrition. This is one of the best books on the subject that I have ever read. I give it a five star rating. It includes an up to date summary of current nutrition research, much of which can be confusing. Fortunately, she is able to sort out and clarify much of the confusion. The author includes some great tables that I plan to use as a reference. For example, she has an informative table about the different kinds of rice, which turns out to be a very healthy grain. What I really liked was her fresh approach to the subject. Many nutrition books can be boring-this one is well written and interesting. I kept saying to myself, "How does she know so much about me and my habits?" There are very few foods that I don't like, but somehow she knew which ones and why. (hint: I discovered I was a "red" body type and they have many common characteristics). Complete the body type questionnaire for some fresh insights into your life and you'll see what I mean. In addition, I discovered some totally unexpected gems. For example, she has the best description of the causes of excess intestinal gas that I've ever read. She has great information about antioxidants, soy foods, cancer prevention and heart disease prevention including many useful tables. After reading this book I came away with a fresh approach to shopping, storing food, and eating. In addition, Marcia Zimmerman opened my mind to learning more about Ayurvedic medicine. She was able to relate a 5000 year old approach to medicine to the 21st century. When an author can not only teach me new information about diet and health, but also open my mind to new possibilities, she's pulled off quite a feat. I plan to recommend this book to my friends, patients and medical colleagues. It is a welcome addition to my personal library. I suggest you buy Eat Your Colors, read it, and see if you will also be motivated to change your diet-I certainly was.
