Customer Reviews:
Wasn't the book described.......2006-01-18
The description given about the book did not correspond with the book I received. The book I received was not a hardcover nor was it the 550 pages as described. It was the paperback version that contained 384 pages. However, regardless of being paperback rather than hardcover, it was still the same book I needed. I ordered it on thursday, and received it on monday. The shipping was extremely fast and I'm very happy about it, because I needed this book ASAP to do my studies. And the price of the book couldn't be beat, I practically saved 60 bucks for a new book.
not for beginners.......2005-03-07
I had to buy this book for my class. This book doesn't instruct how to input equations. Not enough example answer codes for each problem. Less visual and tedious to follow all words.
Great Book.......2005-01-16
This is a well-written book that provides a nice, concise introduction to numerical methods. As with other books by this author, it is very student friendly and should be particularly useful for people, like myself, who use it for self-study. I was not familiar with MATLAB prior to using the book. This book made it relatively easy for me to pick up the fundamentals and then implement numerical solutions. As a computer scientist, I also liked the emphasis placed on the development of M-files. My only criticism is that I wish the book covered more material. I hope that the author expands it in future editions.
Book Description
Still brief - but with the chapters that you wanted - Steven Chapra’s new second edition is written for engineers and scientists who want to learn numerical problem solving. This text focuses on problem-solving (applications) rather than theory, using MATLAB, and is intended for Numerical Methods users; hence theory is included only to inform key concepts. The new second edition feature new material such as Numerical Differentiation and ODE's: Boundary-Value Problems.

Customer Reviews:
Great for biosignal processing algorithms with Matlab.......2005-10-14
This book assumes that you have both a prior knowledge of Matlab and of signal processing concepts. It spends the first three chapters going over measurement and transducer systems, basic signals and systems, and classical methods of spectral analysis. Even though these chapters are meant to be a quick review, there are some Matlab implementations of basic algorithms in each chapter. Chapter four introduces digital filters and shows Matlab implementations of both IIR and FIR filters. A special treat of chapter four is that some time is spent introducing the reader to the Matab signal processing toolkit. Now that the basics of digital filtering have been introduced, more advanced signal processing techniques are tackled. These include modern methods of spectral analysis and also time-frequency analysis using such methods as the Wigner-Ville distribution. Again, in all cases, the equations are concise, the prose is very accessible, and all concepts are demonstrated using Matlab programs. There is a separate chapter devoted to the wavelet transform and to its use in filter banks, denoising, and feature detection. Quite frankly, I found this chapter far more accessible than entire books that have been devoted to the subject, especially if you are interested in getting to the heart of the matter and using wavelets to perform a task. Two more chapters round out the section of the book on general signal processing techniques- one is about adaptive filters and another on principal component analysis. The final four chapters of the book concern themselves with image processing and Matlab, and the Matlab image processing toolkit in particular. You should already be familiar with the basic concepts behind image processing, and as with the signal processing portion of this book, the point is to have a single text with all of the relevant signal processing techniques briefly described along with Matlab code for the purpose of biosignal processing. However, even if you are not a biomedical engineer, and I am not, you should find this book helpful in the general sense of producing implementations of signal processing concepts. This book would also be helpful for biometric professionals since it goes into great detail on how to turn biological features into measurements that can be processed and compared.

Book Description
The extraordinary development of microprocessors and their extensive use in control systems in all fields of application has brought about important changes in the design of control systems. Their performance and low cost make them much more capable, in many circumstances, than analog controllers.
In order to take full advantage of this potential,
Digital Control Systems demonstrates in detail how to design and implement high-performance model-based controllers combining system identification and control design techniques extensively tested in industrial milieux. The effective use of these techniques is illustrated in the context of various systems including: d.c. motors, flexible transmissions, air heaters, distillation columns and hot-dip galvanizing. Topics covered include:
• essentials of computer-based control systems;
• controller design methods (robust pole placement, long-range-predictive control, state space, digital PID, etc.);
• system identification techniques;
• practical aspects of system identification and digital control.
A number of recent methodological developments in control design and system identification, driven by applications, are presented, including:
• robust digital control design using sensitivity function shaping;
• plant identification in closed loop operation;
• reduction of controller complexity.
The text of
Digital Control Systems is enhanced, for practical and tutorial purposes, by the use of software which illustrates the various concepts and algorithms and gives a feeling for the phenomena, discussed. The MATLAB
®/Scilab routines used for this purpose can be downloaded from the textbook’s website where additional material for teaching is available (slide presentations of the chapter material, data files for additional laboratory sessions and example files).
Graduate students in courses on digital control will find this text to be most helpful in learning the essential techniques of computer-based control while the wealth of additional material will make the tutor’s tasks of teaching and preparation quicker and easier. The book also provides practising engineers wishing to enhance their skills in this area with efficient and co-ordinated methods for the design and implementation of computer-based controllers.

Medical Image Analysis Methods (Electrical Engineering & Applied Signal Processing)
ASIN: 0824758498 |
Book Description
It is essential that differently oriented specialists and students involved in image processing have a firm grasp of the necessary concepts and principles. A single-source reference that can provide this foundation, as well as a thorough explanation of the techniques involved, particularly those found in medical image processing, would be an invaluable resource to have. Medical Image Processing, Reconstruction and Restoration: Concepts and Methods is that resource. It not only explains the general principles and methods of image processing, but also focuses on recent applications specific to medical imaging - providing a theoretical yet clear explanation of underlying generic concepts. The content of this book is divided into three parts: Ø Part I, Images as Multidimensional Signals, provides the introduction to basic image processing theory, explaining it for both analogue and digital image representation. Ø Part II, Imaging Systems as Data Sources, offers an alternative view on imaging modalities, with emphasis placed on analyzing internal signals and (pre)image data that are consequently processed. Ø Part III, Image Processing and Analysis, focuses on such vital image processing topics as tomographic image reconstruction, image fusion, methods of image enhancement, and image restoration techniques. This section also explains concepts of fundamental-level image analysis - detailing local feature analysis, image segmentation, and generalized morphological transforms. It also addresses what is needed within the image processing environment by noting necessary hardware and software and processes for image archiving and communications.

Book Description
Single Crystal Growth of Semiconductors from Metallic Solutions covers the four principal growth techniques currently in use for the growth of semiconductor single crystals from metallic solutions. Providing an in-depth review of the state-of-the-art of each, both experimentally and by numerical simulations. The importance of a close interaction between the numerical and experimental aspects of the processes is also emphasized.
Advances in the fields of electronics and opto-electronics are hampered by the limited number of substrate materials which can be readily produced by melt-growth techniques such as the Czochralski and Bridgman methods. This can be alleviated by the use of alternative growth techniques, and in particular, growth from metallic solutions. The principal techniques currently in use are: Liquid Phase Epitaxy; Liquid Phase Electroepitaxy; the Travelling Heater Method, and; Liquid Phase Diffusion.
Single Crystal Growth of Semiconductors from Metallic Solutions will serve as a valuable reference tool for researchers, and graduate and senior undergraduate students in the field of crystal growth. It covers most of the models developed in recent years. The detailed development of basic and constitutive equations and the associated interface and boundary conditions given for each technique will be very valuable to researchers for the development of their new models.
* Describes the fundamentals of crystal growth modelling
* Providing a state-of-the art description of the mathematical and experimental growth processes
* Allows reader to gain clear insight into the practical and mathematical aspects of the topic
