    Book Description

Today's chemists need to know how hazardous the chemicals they work with are, and they want to understand the relationship between chemical and structural properties and toxicity. At the same time, modern society requires that chemists have this kowledge, as legislation makes the producers/users of chemicals responsible for any adverse effects. The book deals with the effects on both man and ecosystems. It stresses especially on the relationship between chemical structure and chemical properties/toxic effects and metabolic conversions.
This is not just another book on toxicology. What makes this book special is that it is written from a chemical point of view. This textbook applies the basic principles of reactivity and reaction possibilities of organic compounds to metabolic reactions and living systems.

      Book Description

Venomous Earth is the compelling story of the worst chemical disaster in human history - unfolding now. It explores the geology, politics and biology of why tens thousands of people are dying, hundreds of thousands developing cancer and tens of millions of people are at risk in Bangladesh, India and beyond, from arsenic-contaminated well water. Andrew Meharg compares this scenario with that in other areas of the world where drinking water is tainted with arsenic, such as extensive areas of South Western USA, the Alto Plano of South America and New Zealand's volcanic regions. He details historical precedents spanning thousands of years in mining and smelting communities, and due to the widespread use of arsenic in alchemy, farming, medicine and manufacturing. His tale takes in William Morris, Paracelsus, George W Bush and a cosmetic that killed two popes. Finally Venomous Earth looks at how the current arsenic crisis is to be tackled and highlights new challenges to our ongoing struggle with the toxic element.

A good introductory-level textbook on contamination control that that provides sufficient background knowledge for the lay person. Concepts were presented in a clear and concise manner. Could have been better if the book includes more diagrams and figures, though.

            Book Description

The second edition of a bestseller, Hazardous Materials Chemistry for Emergency Responders continues to provide the fundamentals of "street chemistry" required by emergency response personnel. The information presented will assist you in responding to specific chemical spills, including identifying the exact chemicals involved and their individual hazards. The chapters are organized by the nine U.S. Department of Transportation's hazard classes. Within each class, the author discusses individual chemicals that are commonly involved in emergency situations along with their physical and chemical characteristics. Additionally, each chapter addresses the multiple perils of hazardous materials, including "hidden" hazards. The top 50 hazardous industrial chemicals are considered throughout the book, together with other hazardous materials. The author also provides incident reports and statistics to underscore the effects that specific chemicals can have on incident outcomes. Furthermore, he delves into the timely concern of dealing with chemical and biological terrorist agents. This information is extremely valuable in your daily work for the health and safety of yourself and those who rely on you. Hazardous Materials Chemistry for Emergency Responders, Second Edition offers a concise presentation of the topics of most importance. The subject matter is written to be appropriate for response personnel without a strong chemistry background by conveying the information in understandable terms. This book will familiarize you with the basic chemistry a responder needs to understand chemical terminology and communicate with others about the chemicals involved in hazardous materials incidents.

            Customer Reviews:

This text is a one stop shop for those responders who want to know what HAZMAT is really about. Anyone interested in furthering their abilities and understanding of Hazardous Chemicals needs this book. It is not too technical for those few who think you can become too technical when responding to emergencies, but opens the door for those of us, who take our work seriously.

Methylenediphenyl diisocyanate[MDI] and toluene diisocyanate [TDI] are chemicals produced at a total rate of about four million tonnes per annum. They are reactive intermediates employed in the production of polyurethanes and other polymers which are used in a wide diversity of applications involving many thousands of workers worldwide. The safe handling of MDI and TDI requires close attention to working practices in their transportation, storage, use and disposal. This book focuses on handling aspects, but also includes reviews of medical and environmental issues. There is detailed information on the properties, occupational and release limits and nomenclature of MDI and TDI, and on their analysis. Gilbert International Ltd operates the Scientific Office of the International Isocyanate Institute. The Institute is wholly dedicated to safety, health and environmental issues related to MDI and TDI. Book Description

The products we purchase and use are assembled from a wide range of naturally occurring and manufactured materials. But too often we create hazards for the ecosystem and human health as we mine, process, distribute, use, and dispose of these materials. Until recently, most research has focused on the waste end of material cycles. This book argues that the safest and least costly point at which to avoid environmental damage is when materials are first designed and selected for use in industrial production.

Materials Matter presents convincing evidence that we can use fewer materials and eliminate the use of many toxic chemicals by focusing directly on material (chemical) use when products are designed. It also shows how manufacturers can save money by increasing the effectiveness of material use and reducing the use of toxic chemicals. It advocates new directions for the material sciences and government policies on materials. And it argues that manufacturers, suppliers, and customers need to set more socially responsible policies for products and services to achieve higher environmental and health goals.
