Herbs are grouped in chapters by function, with expanded summaries and tables for contrast and comparison. Each herb is identified by its pharmaceutical, pinyin, botanical, and family names, as well as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and English common names.
Key characteristics are provided at the beginning of each entry, along with dosage, properties, channels entered, and relevant cautions and contraindications. This provides a quick overview of essential information.
Actions and indications are integrated with important combinations that illustrate the range of an herb's functions, with references to appropriate formulas. This presents a more three-dimensional picture of how each herb is actually used.
Expanded commentary offers in-depth analysis and places each herb in its clinical context through rich historical references. The mechanisms of action underlying important combinations, and comparisons with similar herbs, provide a broader context for understanding how the herb can be used with optimal effect.
A section devoted to nomenclature and preparation describes the most important methods of processing and preparing each herb, and the advantages of each method. It also provides information about other commonly-used names and historical background.
Safety is an important focus of this edition, with an emphasis on proper herb identification. Issues concerning standardized products, desirable qualities, variants, and adulterants are explained for each herb. There is also extensive information on toxicity, as well as chemical constituents.
The utility of this book is enhanced by its wide range of appendices, among which are color photographs comparing the standard and adulterant forms of over 20 common herbs; tables of herbs that are indicated for specific pathologies of the five yin organs; and extensive cross references of the herbs by taxonomy, pinyin, pharmaceutical name, and other East Asian languages. Well, what can you say about this book? This is a hefty, giant book, and could certainly induce some kind of cerbral damage if dropped out of a third story window. :) No, in all seriousness, this is a great, concise book, and as the title of this review implies, it becomes more manageable after you get used to it. Used solely by itself, it will probably not help the student of Chinese herbology to ace any exams, but used in accordance with other study techniques, it will furter deepen and reinforce the studying of the herbs.

An Undesirable Text.......2006-12-09
For me, the utility of a chemistry text is defined in simple terms. Does it help me complete the homework assignments? Does it explain things in a way that my professor does not? Does it stand alone, apart from the instruction of my professor?
I took an Inorganic course to fill a deficiency and so I bought this book. I found it to be very disappointing. The explanations of key concepts (such as term symbols and crystal field theory) is lacking and the problems that the text works out seem esoteric and too terse for someone trying to connect the dots.
I like the Tarr and Mieslier text better.
Inorganic Professor.......2006-09-13
I recently got a copy of this text from the publisher (for review purposes). So I took a look and then read some of the reviews here. Let me just say that "Angry Inorganic Student" is way off base. I've taught out of both Huyeey, Keiter & Keiter and Douglas, McDaniel & Alexander. Both are ok and this one is no worse. In fact I think it has a nice fresh look that updates the materials in the "old standard" textbooks. I found the sections on solid-state materials, nanomaterials and bioinorganic timely and appropriate. I may even consider switching to this textbook when I teach senior inorganic in the spring term.

I am on amazon right now because I need to find a new textbook that is worth reading for my inorganic chemistry course. This book is garbage, it reads like an encyclopedia that was written by someone who already knows inorganic chemistry inside and out for someone who already knows inorganic chemistry inside and out. I had no idea the book was filled with errors because the book does such a bad job of explaining inorganic chemistry that I don't know what is being talked about most of the time. Avoid this book and if you can name a better inorganic chemistry textbook let me know.
Atkins slaughters another chemistry subfield........2002-09-20
Having muddied the waters of physical chemistry, Atkins proceeds to write this low-grade inorganic text. This book is laughable next to the Huheey, Keiter et al text. This text is also far below the Miessler & Tarr text.
This book is printed in large text, in black & white, with some line art. It has no more pages than M&T but is twice as thick. Its descriptions are shoddy and the explanations lacking.
Do yourself a favor and pick up the Miessler and Tarr text and leave this book alone.
Iorganic Chemistry by D. F. Shriver, P. W. Atkins.......2001-07-15
If after reading of dozens of chemistry textbooks you still have a mess in your head and feeling chemistry is something very tricky, this is the right book to put things on their places.

MOST EASY METHOD.......2000-02-24
Having been an Industrial Engineer and Management Consultant for many years I am allways sceptical when a "new" tecnique is launched. It was in this frame of mind that I approached MOST. What a revelation, not new as such as it is based on the original tried and trusted MTM system, however it is a fresh approach, and a welcome one at that! Here is a system which is statisticaly accurate, quick to apply,and easy to understand. More importantly it encourages method development and improvement. As a recommendation I would encourage everyone in this field of operation to read this book and consider its application. I did and have just completed the approved training and certification course.

The Very Best Reference - From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control.......2006-07-08
The book cover almost every single instrument used in the process industry for Process measurement and Analysis of the most common process variables. The book covers Flow, Level, Temperature, Pressure, Density, Safety and Miscellaneous Sensors (Vibration, Shock, acceleration, torque, noise, etc.)
One of the aspect that I find more appealing is that at the beginning of each chapter you find an application and selection oriented overview and an orientation table for the process variable covered in that chapter of the book. The tables list all the different types of sensors and summarize the features and capabilities, as well as approximated prices, accuracies and characteristics of each one. If you need a sensor for a particular application, you can narrow your options and then go to the sections of the book that covers in details the selected sensors.
If you work with Industrial Instrumentation you will find this book to be a very valuable tool in your day to day job, either if you specify, install, maintain or operate them.
This handbook has almost 2000 pages of really useful information.
I have been working in the Process Industries for more than 16 years as an Automation, Instrumentation, Process Safety and Process Control Engineer. I consider this book to be the very best in the field, and it is really an Excellent reference for anyone and everyone working in these areas or in areas related with their Industrial applications.

Excellent book. I second Mr. Hills comments, although I have recently purchased the books based upon comments Mr.Liptak has made in the control mailing list. It is a very good investment. The book is easy to read/understand, covers the full spectrum of instrumentation,give relative costs and companies manufacturing the items. It is a good first book to turn to, and will save me much research time. I wish I would have known about it earlier.
Excellent book for the advanced field technician........2000-07-07
I have used this book for years and it has never failed to provide the information necessary to troubleshoot and repair problems with measurement systems. Liptak does a wonderful job presenting measurement theory and the principles of operation of various measurement strategies. The most helpful information Liptak includes is the discussion of the limitation of various measurement devices. If you are responsible for the maintenance of a wide variety of instruments and you desire to know how those instruments work, this book is worth every penny.
