Book Description
DNA-chip analysis has come a long way since the first conference in Moscow in 1991. Nowadays, DNA-microarrays seem to be a common commodity in biological sciences. The complexity hidden behind the apparent ease of such studies, however, is highlighted by the fact that it took about ten years before the methodology really set off. Also, on closer scrutiny, one realises that some problems still remain. Nevertheless, microarrays produce data on a scale beyond imagination a few years ago. The authors of the book took part in bringing this about. They are well-known experts in the field, many - like Edwin Southern, Hans Lehrach, Radoje Drmanac, Pavel Pevzner and Charles Cantor - have been actively pursuing array technology for more than a decade. They demonstrate the continuous development in both technology and application areas and elucidate on critical points that need to be considered when performing microarray analyses.
Book Description
A Machine to Make a Future represents a remarkably original look at the present and possible future of biotechnology research in the wake of the mapping of the human genome. The central tenet of Celera Diagnostics--the California biotech company whose formative work during 2003 is the focus of the book--is that the emergent knowledge about the genome, with its profound implications for human health, can now be turned into a powerful diagnostic apparatus--one that will yield breakthrough diagnostic and therapeutic products (and, potentially, profit). Celera's efforts--assuming they succeed--may fundamentally reshape the fabric of how health and health care are understood, practiced, and managed.
Presenting a series of interviews with all of the key players in Celera Diagnostics, Paul Rabinow and Talia Dan-Cohen open a fascinating window on the complexity of corporate scientific innovation. This marks a radical departure from other books on the biotech industry by chronicling the vicissitudes of a project during a finite time period, in the words of the actors themselves.
Ultimately, the authors conclude, Celera Diagnostics is engaged in a future characterized not by geniuses and their celebrated discoveries but by a largely anonymous and widely distributed profusion of data and results--a "machine to make a future."
In their new afterword, Rabinow and Dan-Cohen revisit Celera Diagnostics as its mighty machine grinds along, wondering, along with the scientists, "what constitutes success and what constitutes failure?" The pathos of the situation turns on how one poses the question as much as how one answers it.

Book Description
Metabolic engineering is a new field with applications in the production of chemicals, fuels, materials, pharmaceuticals, and medicine at the genetic level. The field's novelty is in the synthesis of molecular biology techniques and the tools of mathematical analysis, which allow rational selection of targets for genetic modification through measurements and control of metabolic fluxes. The objective is to identify specific genetics or environmental manipulations that result in improvements in yield and productivities of biotechnological processes.
Key features of the book are pathway integration and the focus on metabolic flux as a fundamental determinant of cell physiology. The book keeps mathematical complexity to a minimum, and provides a glossary of biological terms to facilitate use of the book by a broader spectrum of readers. A web page exists to communicate updates of the codes and homework problems.
Key Features
* Demonstrates metabolic engineering in action with numerous examples of pathway modification
* Includes methods for identifying key enzymes in metabolic networks
* Contains a comprehensive review of metabolic biochemistry
* Discusses metabolic regulation at the gene, enzyme, operon, and cell levels
* Explains concepts of stoichiometry, kinetics, and thermodynamics of metabolic pathways
* Minimizes mathematical complexity
* Links to a Web page to communicate updates of the software code and homework problems
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2006-08-21
This book was a very pleasant surprise. It is rigurous yet accessible enough to provide a very clear picture of the metabolic pathway engineering field. Complicated topics like metabolic control and flux analisys (MCA) are very well treated. The examples are usually relevant and well explained, however, some need pen and paper to work up some jumps in the reasoning train. The first chapter is just an introduction whereas the second chapter is a review of cellular metabolism that may result too dense for most people (including myself). Most biologists can probably do away skipping it (althought some examples involving transport where quite interesting). I am glad I didn't put the book away because on chapter 3 things get really exciting. If you are interested in understanding how metabolic pathways are organized and what analytical tools are there available to model them (and eventually "reconfigure") this book for you.
Note: the book is meatn to be undestood and it is nice to see MCA depleted of the hoopla many authors insist on surrounding it with.

Book Description
This book provides the first and only comprehensive description and detailed summary of the genetics, structure, function, mechanisms of action, evolution and engineering of homing endonucleases and inteins. These two unique protein superfamilies, which are tied together through their frequent fusion and coevolution, have generated considerable excitement for their fundamental, structural, and functional properties, their evolution as parasitic elements, and their widespread applications as gene targeting agents and as instruments for the generation of modified proteins and novel protein combinations.

Book Description
The human genome project is set to revolutionise health care and medicine in the near future. The genetic make up of each individual gives clues as to the genetic factors that predispose one to a particular genetic disease. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), single base changes in the nucleotide DNA sequence of individuals, are thought to be the main cause of genetic variation. By comparing patterns of SNP allele frequencies between disease affected and control populations, disease associated SNPs can be identified and potential disease gene(s) located. These types of study necessitate genotyping of thousands of SNPs which requires the use of powerful, high throughput, systems of analysis. Mass spectrometry is fast becoming the preferred technology for this type of high throughput analysis.
This book contains a collection of descriptions of some of the most outstanding advances in the field of mass spectrometry from which, I hope, the reader will be able to learn both the principles and the most up to date methods for its use in genomic analysis. It covers the general principles of the technologies and more in depth detailed descriptions for more academic reading and information.
Audience: Whether you are a student, a post-doctoral researcher or experienced MS user, this book will be a stimulating addition to the analytical arena of mass spectrometry and genomic analysis.

Book Description
This primer provides a systematic and rigorous introduction to the spectra and electronic structure of atoms in the gas phase. Throughout the book, the author explains observed spectra in terms of underlying quantum mechanical principles while at the same time illustrating experimental aspects
and chemical applications. The book begins with a review of elementary quantum mechanics as applied to spherically symmetric problems and a discussion of electromagnetic radiation properties. It goes on to detail the spectra of hydrogenic atoms, the alkali metals, the helium atoms, and
many-electron atoms at all stages. Topics such as spin-orbit coupling, the Zeeman effect, spin-correlation and the Pauli Principle, Russel-Saunders, and jj-coupling are included. Modern applications and techniques such as lasers and cooling of atoms are briefly discussed. Many topics are covered
at two levels in separate sections, so that a newcomer can gain qualitative understanding by omitting some sections and then return later for a more detailed quantitative picture.

Book Description
Recent scientific breakthroughs have improved our understanding of the impact of environmental toxic substances on human health. With the knowledge, new techniques are incorporated into human monitoring programs to identify damage to DNA, other macromolecules and cells that can be used to predict health risk from exposure to environmental genotoxic agents. The molecular and cellular responses are often measured in peripheral lymphocytes because these cells can be collected in a socially and ethically acceptable manner, and via a minimally invasive route. However, other cells such as sperm, buccal or nasal epithelial cells, placental cells, and body fluids such as urine and serum, are also used. From these investigations, it becomes obvious that an individual's genetic constitution and lifestyle activities can significantly influence the exposure effect. Genetic constitution includes inherited variations in genes for chemical metabolism and DNA repair. Lifestyle activities include diet and levels of physical activity. Because of the significant influence of the environmental factors on human health, there is increased interest in monitoring human populations for improvement of health. The major objective of this publication is to enhance the knowledge and expertise of researchers in molecular epidemiology and human monitoring.
