Book Description
First published in 1997, CONCEPTS IN WINE CHEMISTRY was the first text and reference book in decades to explain the basic science behind the chemistry of wine. This new edition is now fully revised and updated to meet the field's most recent developments and give the chemistry backbone to the broader science of winemaking. The chapters are logically organized from the musts and juice composition through each step of the winemaking process: fermentation, phenolics, oxidation, oak products, sulfur dioxide, cellar process and wine defects. Also included is a chapter on the history of wine chemistry and ancient winemaking practices, and a thorough index and chapter outlines.
Book Description
This comprehensive book gives readers easy access to the basic concepts and their relevant connections of the chemical principles operating in everyday life. Numerous examples and real-world applications provide chemistry enthusiasts with long-term, meaningful understandings. Chapter topics include scientific measurements, matter and energy, models of the atom, chemical reactions, the mole concept, liquids and solids, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction, chemical equilibrium, nuclear and organic chemistry, and biochemistry. For those who understand that knowledge of chemistry constitutes an empowering life skill.
Customer Reviews:
I like this book so much I am buying copies for my students!.......2005-01-12
I have been a college student and subsequently a teacher of chemistry for a number of years now and this is the first book that has really impressed me enough so that I want to continue teaching from it for years to come. I think the writing is clear and at the appropriate level for junior college students in a general introductory course. We only cover the first 11 chapters in our quarter, but the content, problems, and photography are superb.
I detest the racket of publishers putting out new editions every other year or so, forcing poor college students to fork over $120 per book for a course that may require more than one textbook! So I have taken it upon myself to buy up used copies of this edition (no way will the college bookstore buy them back from the students!) and distribute them to my students on a loaner basis for the duration of the course. Sure wish I had had a teacher like me! This book is a 1000 times better than the text I used at the University of California in the year-long sequence! The new edition (4th) is essentially the same book, just a nice new cover and an inflated price. My only complaint about the book is that it was not glued together well at the plant when they made them, as all of the first pages tend to fall out or pull out with too much use when students refer to the periodic table inside the front cover.
So that's my 2 cents, just please don't compete with me for the reasonably priced used 3rd editions. I already have bought over 50, though, so you really wouldn't hurt my program, but I intend to keep snatching them up!
pretty easy to read.......2002-08-05
i liked this book. the examples were easy to read and the book was a decent introduction to chemistry. if u are required to get this book for an introductory class. dont worry too much its not that hard.
Book Description
Organic chemistry may be challenging, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get the grade you want. This book points out the major principles in organic chemistry and explains why they are relevant to the rest of the course. It provides time-saving study tips and a clear roadmap for your studies that will help you focus your efforts. And it helps you develop the skills you need to solve a variety of problems types—even unfamiliar ones!

For sure .......2007-07-04
If you have any apprehension about taking the O.C., purchace this before anything else. But most of all, read it. Compare it to class notes and the textbook and ask your professor many well thought out questions both after class and during office hours. With this little books help i made an A in both O.C. I & II!
Orgo Review Book.......2007-06-27
I thought this book was great at first. It is really thorough with a lot of concepts that are difficult to grasp, such as resonance structures and naming. However, there were some mistakes in the book. And, it really just drops off after that, barely covering reactions. Instead, the book instructs on how to study the reactions yourself, but does not go through any of them as I had hoped it would.
kinda pointless, same examples you'll encounter in your book.......2007-06-17
with a little more work, there's really no need for this book.
THis book helped soooooo much!!!!.......2007-06-09
This book is a godsend. This book explains all the basic concepts really well. It is helping me out so much. I am retaking organic chemistry I now. I reccommend this book to anyone who is taking organic chemistry because it will clear up the basic concepts as well as reinforce the concepts by supplying problems. I just bought the second semster topics as well.
This book should be used with your textbook to get the most out of the course. I HIGHLY RECCOMMEND THIS BOOK! I wish I would of bought it the first time I took organic!
Be warned..........2007-05-18
I bought another one of the author's titles, from the same publisher, to have something a little smaller to read on the subway rather than pulling out my large textbook. The workable problems and their respective solutions are plagued with errors from beginning to end. I attempted to e-mail and call the author at Johns Hopkins to both bring this to his attention and to attempt to get a corrected solutions set, but to no avail. I feel that posting this is an appropriate warning to students who may actually need to rely on supplemental supplemental material like this to help grasp the material. If his other titles are any indication, I warn you to stay away from this book and seek other material.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Chemistry: Concepts and Problems: A Self-Teaching Guide (Wiley Self-Teaching Guides).......2007-08-08
Years ago my high school chemistry teacher told me I was too dumb to understand chemistry. This book helped me pass out of introductory college chemistry and gave me the confidence to take on upper division chemistry classes as I pursue a second career as a certified nurse practioner.
The authors take you by the hand and walk step by step through a world that is logical and challenging. Their teaching method dispelled my fears of being too dumb and established a new found belief that I can and do understand chemistry.
I hope it will do the same for you.
Great layout, easy book to follow.......2007-05-24
I find this book a very thorough and painfully methodical step-by-step guide. Each concept is presented in a logical sequence and is broken into small pieces so it can be easily learned and absorbed. It has all the characteristics of good teaching: Small fractions of knowledge introduced progressively, frequent repetition, test questions on every other sentence, each piece is based on the previous, logical correlates and a sum-up test at the end of each passage. I don't mind the answers under each question, in fact I prefer it as it gives me instant feedback without having to flip back the pages 4 times a minute. I just hide the answers until I've answered the question. Even my cat could learn chemistry with this book. Brilliant!
Pretty good book.......2007-05-20
Useful information for someone who had chemistry 37 years ago and now taking it again. The information was pretty clear and the actual problems are easy to work. I got this book along with another one, and my "fears" were resolved before I even started the class.
Top Notch for Intro Chem.......2007-05-01
This book is fabulous. I purchased it so that I could more easily homeschool my eighth grader as I prepare him to take AP Chem next year. I have an excellent background in chemistry myself, so I was surprised to find myself looking at some topics in a fresh and helpful way. This book is easy to follow, with clear and understandable step-by-step problems making up each chapter. My 13 year old was coming up with the answers before I even finished asking the questions, it was that clear.
There are two reasons that I am only giving 4 stars:
1) I would have liked to see many more problems in order to reinforce the concepts that were so carefully laid out. I had to borrow a text book so that I could add more problems for my son.
2) I am aware of the possibility that my pre-existing understanding of the material might have allowed me to teach it more thoroughly and easily than your average homeschooler. It might not go into enough depth as a curriculum if you are looking for the whole enchilada. You might need to borrow another text to supplement it.
Overall...wonderful investment, inexpensive, great "frame" for introductory chemistry. I think this would be AMAZING as a "cheat" book for a high schooler or college student who is struggling.
Easy, simple, informative........2007-03-23
I didn't like chemistry at school but now I'm interested. It's excellent for learning the basics and doing it alone.
Book Description
The third edition of Concepts in Biochemistry makes the most applied and accessible biochemistry text on the market. Students are more successful with Boyer because it isn't intimidating and it makes clear the relevance of the material to their future careers. Like the first two editions, Boyer is written for students who need an introduction to the fundamental principles of biochemistry and are preparing for a career in the allied health sciences, the biological sciences, and the environmental sciences. (The text is also appropriate for use in one-semester courses developed for chemistry majors as a result of the new American Chemical Society requirements for three-credit hours of biochemistry coursework.)
The modern, student-friendly organization sets the book apart from the competition because the early placement of nucleic acids enhances the traditional coverage of protein structure and function, and metabolism. As an example, it is now possible to present metabolism in a more contemporary fashion, emphasizing gene regulation and integration.
Rod Boyer is a recently retired Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. He has a PhD from Colorado State and recently spent a sabbatical year at Nobel Prize winner Tom Cech's lab at the University of Colorado. He is on the Editorial Board for the journal, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education and has been very active in education affairs for the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Reference.......2001-02-01
This book is must for process engineer esp. engineer in Petroleun and Refinery business. Written in very lucid manner shows the author is not only technically competent but has extensive experience in the industry. His book on " Distillation Operation" is also highly recomended.
Book Description
This is the companion book to the author's best selling Concepts In Wine Chemistry. It is a successor to his original Winery Technology & Operations. Since the author published his first book in 1990, he has shifted much of his time from research and teaching to operating his own small winery and consulting world-wide with other winemakers. Thus, this new text has a very practical and applied science character. In addition there have been significant discoveries and technological advances in winemaking since the original text. The enlarged sections on fermentation, skin contact, acid balance, the use of oak, phenolics and quality control reflect and expand upon the original text.
This is a "how-to" book, organized in the sequence of the processes a winemaker faces when confronted with the rapid challenge of converting fresh grapes into good wine. As the author points out, the grapes will make wine by themselves due to natural biological and chemical processes. However, to make good wine or even great wine, nature must be guided by the skilled and artful hand of the winemaker.
The author's many years of experience in producing many different wines helps the reader focus on the right processes at the right time to achieve winemaking success. This book stands on the shoulders of the original highly acclaimed text and again it can be said: "Don't make wine without it"!

Book Description
In photochemical reactions, such as photosynthesis, light energy initiates a chemical reaction. In the jellyfish we have just the opposite situation. That is, light energy is produced by a chemical reaction. The production of light energy by a chemical reaction is known as chemiluminescence. If it is produced by living organisms, such as the jellyfish, it is known as bioluminescence. This text emphasizes the relevance of chemistry to the world around us. Both within the text and in the essays entitled "Making It Real" you will find discussions of how the abstract subject of chemistry relates to the reality of our everyday lives. The Making It Real essay in Chapter 13 discusses bioluminescence that was first noticed in fireflies.
Discover a fascinating, living science!
From the mysteries of dark matter to the power of lightning, few subjects are more fascinating and relate more directly to everyday life than chemistry. Now redesigned and revised to promote visualization and enhance understanding, the new Seventh Edition of Leo Malone's Basic Concepts of Chemistry captures the excitement of this dynamic field, and presents it in a way that is easy to learn.
Covering all the essential topics in a student-friendly style, this best-selling preparatory chemistry text provides students with all the help they need to master basic concepts, overcome common math difficulties, and develop strong problem-solving skills.
Highlights of the Seventh Edition
* NEW! Making It Real sections relate the subject at hand to high-interest topics that demonstrate applications and motivate learning.

Finally!!! A book that shows math set ups in an easy to understand format!.......2007-04-06
Chemistry contains A LOT of math, at least my professor requires it.
I am taking a college Chemistry course to satisfy my degree requirement in the nursing field. I am an adult student whom has always struggled with math. I have searched high and low for a book to show the right set ups for the math problems that must be dealt with in order to succeed in this subject. I finally found it, Basic Concepts of Chemistry.
At the beginning of the book, it shows how to set up conversions. It does a beautiful job of showing mole to mole conversion in later chapters. It also shows you the geometry that you need when you encounter the valance shell electron pair repulsion theory (VESPR) in an easy to understand format.
This book may contain typos and errors but it delivers the good by explaining what you need to know. If you can overlook them, you've got yourself a winner.
Yes, this book is not college level, but it is a fast read, and explains concepts clearly. The book seems to help "prepare" you, or get you ready for the math that you will face in Chemistry without it seeming overwhelming to the student. I only wish I had this book at the beginning of the semester, instead of towards the last, when I really needed it.
For comparisons, I do like it better than The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry, 2nd Edition (Complete Idiot's Guide to) and Chemistry for Dummies. The book that my class requires is Introduction to General, Organic and Biochemistry (with CD-ROM and ThomsonNOW Printed Access Card). It does an okay job but out of all of them, Basic Concepts of Chemistry is the best.
Worst text I have ever used.......2006-11-20
This book does an extremely poor job of explaining basic concepts. The explanations lack even more clarity because of the absurd amount of typos that occur throughout (the study guide contains several typos per chapter...and we're not talking grammar, we're talking wrong answers/formulas). I actually bought a second textbook for my chemistry course and found it more helpful than this one (and the course was taught from this text). Someone needs to A.) PROOFREAD THE TEXT AND STUDY GUIDE, and B.) DEVELOP REAL, LUCID EXPLANATIONS, not relate molar mass to apples and oranges. For anyone who is interested the second book I purchased was the one published by McGraw-Hill(and no I do not work for them).
Better then expected.......2005-09-24
I was very pleased w/ my purchase. You said it was like new and I really don't think it had ever been opened.
Barely the Basics 7th edition.......2003-07-21
CONS:
If your planning on taking college level chemistry, don't waste your time with this text. It's overly simplistic and is not able to explain many of the regular concepts that are required for completing a college chem. course. Although the simplicity appears appealing to the beginner level, the text will leave you hanging with numerous unanswered questions.
PROS:
The book is a "ok" "review" unless your in high school and still you'll need more then it offers. The math examples and color are probably it's best features. ...
The Perfect Companion.......2000-01-08
This book is the perfect companion for those studying Chemistry at a beginner level (high school, and to a lesser extent first-year College study.) Its detailed explaination of ideas and concepts coupled with the lively and colorful diagrams all provides excellent back-up notes for one's course of study. Take it to class and have it ready to go when you study. Malone writes in a friendly and non-formal style, but still gives very good and up-to-date deatils of current chemistry techniques. The tag questions on each page will make you think about each chapter's contents and will reinforce the content of the book. Like chemistry, the ideas in this book are universal and will benefit your study no matter where in the world you are.
