Book Description
FOOD ADDITIVES: A Shopper's Guide To What's Safe & What's Not reveals what food manufacturers don't want you to know about their products. It shows you how to find the truth behind deceptive food packaging. You will learn how to confidently read labels so that you will know how healthy a food really is and if it contains dangerous ingredients.
New in the 2004 edition, you will learn how to identify genetically modified produce in the grocery store.
This book classifies over 800 commonly used food additives according to safety, whether they may cause allergic reactions, and if they are Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA. In just seconds, the average person can determine if the food they're buying contains dangerous substances. The book is clear, concise and easy to use.
Customer Reviews:
What the FDA says is safe, isn't necessarily what you want to eat........2007-07-03
Just like the author says, anyone who eats needs to read this book. It's a pocket-sized reference guide. Pick it up!
Excellent pocket size reference for food shopping!.......2007-06-01
Provides valuable information to you when you need it, as it is small and portable. Helps when you're looking at boxes and cans and can't decipher what's actually inside.
handy resource.........2007-04-17
this book provides a plethora of information on a variety of additives but the depth is light. that's okay. if you're very interested i think you have enough to go off and do more research. this book is worth it. very small and easy to flip through. not too many sections/chapters. try it...by the way, i found my copy at whole foods.
Education While Shopping.......2007-03-31
Learn what's in the foods you eat while you shop for groceries. This handy guide goes right along with you.
Handy pocket guide.......2007-03-15
This is a good book for very general info. Good to have with you on trips to the store. It is smaller than I thought (pocket size) and the info is good, but not in much detail. I also bought the Dying to Look GOod which is the cosmetic guide. It was bigger and a bit more informative. Worth the $5, though.
Book Description
7 Weeks to Safe Social Drinking is based on the Drink/Link Moderate Drinking Program which has helped thousands of drinkers to control drinking and drink less since 1988. Over 60% of the drinkers who have completed this program have cut their drinking in half and over 80% have significantly reduced their alcohol consumption! You'll learn to modify your drinking habits and attitudes, overcome alcohol craving, drink less and prevent alcoholism on your own at home - no meetings, belief in a higher power or professional help are required.
First, you define safe social drinking and learn five healthy drinking guidelines. Then, each week you learn new clinically-proven strategies and techniques to help you stay within the guidelines you learned the first week. How to manage drinking desire, pace your drinking, pre-plan for drinking occasions and learn from your slips are all covered. By the end of the program, alcohol is less important to you, you're drinking less and enjoying it more!
Customer Reviews:
Best Book To Improve Drinking Habits!.......2007-07-31
This is the best book I've read about moderate drinking and how to get there.
Most of the time I don't have a problem with alcohol but sometimes it takes
over and I drink too much. I have found the suggestions in this book invaluable,
especially pre-planning my drinking behavior with the tips in the program,
eating while I'm drinking and watching the clock to slow down my drinking.
That's just for starters. Cornett gives lots of tips and also works on your
attitude about alcohol and its importance in your life.
I think this book could change the world and have given it to friends who
drink too much.
Not for hard drinkers.......2007-05-17
The book is well written and includes good guidelines to follow if you are not a serious drinker.
Problem Drinker or Alcoholic? It Doesn't Matter!.......2006-07-04
I don't know if I was a problem drinker or alcoholic. I don't care - I'm not into labels. But I do know I wanted to drink less and become less dependent on alcohol. And 7 Weeks helped me. One message in the book is you've got to take responsibility for your drinking instead of chalking it up to genes or a bad childhood or whatever. Another message is you can change if you want to. And Cornett gives concrete tips to cut down.
Who care if you're a "problem drinker" or "alcoholic"? If you want to drink less and have a healthier relationship with alcohol, 7 Weeks is for you. I'd pay twice the price for this book if I had to do it all over again.
A Winner for Anyone Questioning Their Drinking.......2005-11-30
This book has been a lifesaver for me. For years I enjoyed social drinking without problems, but the last couple of years I've questioned if I was drinking too much. This program showed me how to pace my drinking, how to make a drinking plan in advance before I started drinking(which really worked)and how to stick to my limit fairly easily. It also made alcohol less important to me - a huge step in the right direction to get back on the healthy social drinking path again. I recommend this book to anyone questioning their drinking. It's a straightforward approach to drink less and drink appropriately.
Loved this book!.......2005-08-11
I wish I had discovered this book 10 years ago. It spelled out how to achieve moderate drinking. It was easy to follow and best of all it worked for me! There are only a few books out that cover the subject of changing drinking behavior. One is filled with stats, boring and hard for me to stay interested in. Another one was too general - no specifics to help me manage drinking. 7 Weeks held my interest and gave specific tips to keep alcohol consumption down and to beat problem drinking.

Good Sound Stuff.......2007-09-25
Useful ideas and tips giving a good grounding in bombproofing your horse. Lots of common sense stuff.
Easy Step-byStep Approach.......2007-05-15
I've actually been training despooking clinics for a few years now. However, my girlfriend recommended this book as another guide to help out. Read the book, and loved it. Simply laid out, with step-by-step approaches for many, many circumstances both on horseback, and on the ground. Straight forward and easily understood. I would definately recommend it to almost anyone interested in training their horse.
Knowledgeable practical advice.......2007-03-09
I found this book to be very practical and helpful. The author, having trained police horses, is very knowledgeable on the topic, and the exercises are clearly laid out with straightforward advice. He included general techniques for training as well as specific exercises for different spooky situations and discussed his philosophy on training while understanding horse's natural instincts. There was a big emphasis on safety for both the horse and rider while working through scary lessons. The information in this book would be applicable to riders in all disciplines. I highly recommend it.
Wasn't greatly impressed with the book/since I'm not a beginner.......2007-01-11
The book was ok but alot of stuff I was already doing with my horses. I would recommend it to someone who is just starting to learn how to despook horses.
Excellent Ideas for Improving a Spooky Horse.......2007-01-09
Easy to follow suggestions make this book a winner. Highly recommended!

An indispensable and timely guide, Risk is the authority for assessing threats to your health and safety. We continually face new risks in our world. Expert authors David Ropeik and George Gray include information on: - 50 top hazards - your likelihood of exposure - the consequences - ways to reduce your risk They cover topics such as: - cancer - biological weapons - indoor air pollution - pesticides - radiation
Customer Reviews:
The antidote to media scares.......2007-05-27
Though its prose style is deliberately dry, this wonderful reference work is the perfect antidote to the "scare of the week" that the media continually inflict upon us. Has short sections on each of 48 risks (e.g. indoor air pollution; pesticides; firearms; X-rays; caffeine; breast implants) containing data and the relevant scientific knowledge, summarized by two scales of "likelihood of being affected" and "seriousness of being affected". Even those who consider themeselves knowledgeable about risk will learn something; I recommend it for my undergraduate seminar course at Berkeley.
great for browsing.......2006-10-07
I thought this was a really fun and interesting book to read, and it is great for learning to think about things from a public health perspective. It also introduces a wide variety of scientific terms and concepts in an interesting and easy to read way. While I believe that the general conclusions on specific risks are valid in a general sense, I also feel as though the heavy reliance on population data makes this less of a practical guide on the individual level. For example, looking at the risk of developing health problems due to air pollution for the U.S. population in general is interesting and informative but may not accurately reflect my individual risk in New Jersey. Because of the complexities involved in risk assessment, I thought the risk meter presentations (although very interesting, and truly a browser's delight) were too general and simplistic. In the author's defense, the narratives often give more practical detail, identify modifiable risk factors and acknowledge some limitations of the data and assessments. While at times I took issue with the validity of generalizing the data and the practicality of some conclusions at the individual level, I recommend this book highly for those interested in how public health risk is evaluated.
Easy to read and comprehend .......2006-04-01
This publication brings more complex concepts of risk management to a common level of understanding for many college students. It helps create a foundation for proper risk communication and arms students with the knowledge to address a large variety of issues affecting our lives today.
MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT.......2005-08-24
I recognize the authors to be significant scholars capable of important work, but this book is downright deceitful in that the title and subtitle suggest that it is a scholarly effort when in fact it is a pop culture "digest" or collection of superficial lists. There is very little discussion worthy of the researchers and you should save your money for a real text if they do one. You can find ALL the information quite easily on the internet.
An Interesting Read, But Has Some Shortcomings.......2005-06-28
I've been interested in the topic of perceived versus real risks for quite some time. When I bought this book I was hoping for a source for comparisons of data that would be useful to someone with such interests. While this book addresses many common risk situations with practical advice regarding them it lacks much really hard data or statistical analysis. No specific references are provided (footnotes, end notes, sources) for teh materials in the book. However, sources for further investigation do appear regularly at the end of each chapter.
Also, despite publication in 2002, after the "9/11" attack and all of its attendant fall-out it fails to address even at a superficial level the preceived risks of terrorism in the US. In the index the word terrorism is noted "see biological weapons (bioweapons); perceived risk." In my opinion, this lack of coverage is glaring. Granted the book was doubtless in the works before 9/11; still, had I been the author or publisher, I'd have delayed publication until a relevant section could have been added.
This is a handy book, a relatively easy read, and probably a decent introduction to the basic concepts of relative risk assessment. As long as one understands this is a basic layperson's text and not a serious look at risk assessment, this may be a good book for you.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2006-02-13
With Allopathic medicine (regular medicine) proving to be miraculous in some situations. At the same time in other situations its proving to be too strong, too much and causing too many side effects. Welcome in herbal medicine as kind of a similar but more sensitive way to treat many of the same problems.
Welcome in a book like this which keeps it simple. Yes simple, yet has very valuable information about herbs and drug interactions and even talks about which herbs are safer than others. A fantastic book to have on hand if you are interested in the wonderful world of herbal medicine.
Demystify the herb world.......2006-01-13
I'm so pleased to tell readers that this book was so pleasurable to read that I read it cover to cover the day it arrived. I started on an herb regiment four months ago (thanks to webmd.com), much to the dismay of my rheumatologist and cardiologist as I was already on fifteen prescription pills a day. With the help of the herbs I've been able to cut those pills in half. But I, too, was concerned about my ignorance as to the possible incompatibility of my newly found herbs with my doctor's advice and pills. Thanks to this book, we can all rest assured that I'm not messing with a dangerous mixture. Absolutely one hundred percent of my prescriptions were listed in the book and found to be safe with the herbs I'm now taking daily. The book is beautifully written with colorful pictures and easy-to cross-reference drugs, herbs, foods, etc. and their interactions with one another. At the end, a bonus that I had not expected: a long list of ailments offered to the reader who may have he or she's own agenda for wanting to try an alternative path to wellness. The mystery of these age-old remedies, that our ancestors probably used, is quickly unraveled in a written format simple enough for a child to understand. And, if I'm not mistaken, the author never once promised to cure cancer, etc. That would have been a giant signal to me that I was dealing with a quack. It is what it is, a guide to herbal usage. It's my new favorite book! P.S. Thank you to the previous on-line critics who lead me through the maze of self-help books to this very special one.
Excellent and Beautiful.......2004-10-21
Being as the publisher is Dorling Kindersley, the book is well laid out and beautifully illustrated. Being as the authors are medically qualified, the book is comprehensive and user-friendly. Very good book indeed.
A Must for the Budding Herbalist.......2004-05-18
This book is necessary for anyone even considering using herbs and herbal remedies for their family. It gives you interactions herba can have with prescription medication, other herbs, vitamins and minerals, even interactions with food!!! I have several other definitive herb books, but this is a must have. It also lists herbs that are safe for Children, the Elderly, and Pregnant Women,as well as the Herbs you should not use.
Improve Your Health with Herbs.......2002-06-08
Prescription and over-the-counter drugs can interact with herbs, so before taking an herbal formula it is a good idea to see which herbs should not be taken with various vitamins, minerals and prescription drugs. There are also some herbs that most people should avoid and this book contains the information you need to make the best decisions about your health.
Herbs can be quite powerful and there can be side effects. There are seven sections that explain the 175 best herbs and how to use them to promote healing and relive minor symptoms.
The Contents Include:
Introduction - Why you should take charge of your health naturally.
Safe & Effective Herbs - Safe herb catalog and herbal medicine explained
Safe and Effective Multiherb Formulas - Multiherb forumulas explained
Herb-Herb and Herb-Food Interactions - Potentially harmful interactions
Dietary Supplement-Herb Interactions - Beneficial dietary interactions, harmful interactions.
Drug-Herb Interactions - Drug catalog and understanding interactions.
Herbs for Special Cases - Safe herbs for children, potential dangerous herbs for children, unsafe herbs for pregnant and nursing women, safe herbs for older adults, dangerous herbs for older adults.
Buyer Beware - Herbal safety, herbs to avoid.
Appendix - Reliable manufacturers, suppliers, top-selling herbs, index of safe herbs, conditions index, additional reading, easy-to-use index.
Not only does this book give you the best information I've seen on herbal medicines, it also is beautifully illustrated with full-color pictures of the plants being discussed. The layout of the items is especially appealing and you will find this book easy-to-use and very practical.
For instance, if you are taking Anacin 3, Asprin-Free Excedrin, Bayer Select, Excedrin PM, Panadol or Tylenol, these contain Acetaminophen which is a pain reliever and fever reducer. While there is no known herbal interactions, you may want to help prevent liver damage from long-term use of acetaminophen by taking Milk thistle. So, preventative care is also discussed in detail.
The Index of Safe Herbs by conditions gives you information fast. If you have Insomnia, you can look up the name of the condition and you will find recommendations for Catnip, Chamomile, Dill seed and Valerian. To read about Chamomile in detail, you can easily look up the herb at the front of the book in the safe herb guide.
What you will find is a picture of the herb plant, why it is used, how it works, comments and cautions and dosage information. For instance, if you can't sleep, but are using a blood-thinning drug like warfarin, or you are allergic to ragweed, you might want to skip that remedy and research a second option. In the beneficial herb-herb interactions tables, you will see that catnip and passionflower are good combinations to relieve anxiety and insomnia. However, they should not be used with antidepressants or MAOI antidepressant drugs like phenelzine.
As with any remedy, it is a good idea to discuss your health issues with your doctor before taking herbal supplements or vitamins. Use this book to catch those items your doctor might not even be aware of. Most physicians don't seem to be aware of the side effects of herbs and don't take a great interest in this area. That has been my experience. Once you know what works for you, I think you will see your doctor less and feel empowered that you can in fact help your body heal with your own knowledge.
Echinacea, olive leaf extract and oregano have literally been a miracle for me and my husband. Within about three days of catching a cold, we seem to recover and get on with life. Before, even on antibiotics, it took one to two weeks to get well.
I looked up Olive Leaf on page 44 and sure enough it is used to treat infections, including colds and ear infections. It contains oleuropein, that has been shown to kill bacteria and viruses. It also has been used for antibiotic qualities for more than 6,000 years! Talk about an ancient remedy. Echinacea is also a Native America remedy and then you have oregano which contains substances that are known to be antibiotic and antifungal. I take the capsules as the oil is rather intense and is not recommended for internal use.
Herbs may be the miracle you have been looking for.
