    Book Description

A readable, informative, fascinating entry on each one of the 100-odd chemical elements, arranged alphabetically from actinium to zirconium. Each entry comprises an explanation of where the element's name comes from, followed by Body element (the role it plays in living things), Element of history (how and when it was discovered), Economic element (what it is used for), Environmental element (where it occurs, how much), Chemical element (facts, figures and narrative), and Element of surprise (an amazing, little-known fact about it). A wonderful 'dipping into' source for the family reference shelf and for students.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating tour de force.......2007-03-14

This is an outstanding piece of work aimed at the intellectually and scientifically curious that also works as a nice reference book on the elements and the Periodic Table.

After a short introduction filled with some top ten tables (e.g., top ten elements in the earth's crust: "Oxygen 466,000" parts per million, "Silicon 277,000" p.p.m., etc.) Emsley spins out a chapter per element in alphabetical order beginning with Actinium and ending with Zirconium. Each chapter is filled with interesting and specific information about the element in question. In the chapter on carbon, for example--understandably one of the longest in the book (7 pages), since carbon is so important to us and so plentiful--there are sections entitled "COSMIC ELEMENT, HUMAN ELEMENT, FOOD ELEMENT, MEDICAL ELEMENT, ELEMENT OF HISTORY, ELEMENT OF WAR, ECONOMIC ELEMENT, ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENT, CHEMICAL ELEMENT," and "ELEMENT OF SURPRISE."

The idea is to place each element in terms of its importance in these various categories as well as giving all sorts of information about its history, abundance and uses. In the ELEMENT OF SURPRISE section Emsley usually comes up with something unusual or striking about the use or the history of the element. In the case of iron, Emsley cites a research project that "fertilized" a barren part of the ocean west of the Galapagos Islands with iron sulfate with dramatic results: "Within a week this barren span of ocean bloomed and turned green with plankton, proving that it was simply lack of this metal that was limiting their growth." (p. 211)

Included in the sections are tables showing how much of the element is in the human body (in the blood, in bones and tissues), and how much is in the environment (in the crust, in the soil, in sea water, and the atmosphere). A third table gives the element's chemical symbol, its atomic number, its atomic weight, melting point, boiling point, density and oxides, if any.

There is a final chapter on the history and development of the Periodic Table, which I found interesting. One of Emsley's strengths is his ability to make the material just so fascinating to read. Part of that comes from his obvious love for his subject matter. He is so good he makes me regret that I did not study chemistry when I was young. Just reading this book has opened my eyes to some of the ideas of chemistry and has greatly improved my knowledge of what the elements are like and how they interact with one another to form various molecules as they become familiar and not so familiar substances.

Here are examples of some of the fascinating details that can be found in the book:

"Iridium is the most corrosion-resistant metal known... The standard metre bar, kept in Paris, is made of a platinum-iridium alloy (90% platinum and 10% iridium) but this was superseded as the basic unit of length in 1960 by a line in the atomic spectrum of krypton (see p. 213)."

And on page 213 we find that "The standard was changed in 1983 to one based on the speed of light in a vacuum, a metre being the distance light travelled in 1/299 793 458th of a second, as measured by a light beam from a helium-neon laser."

"Inside the body, iron, as iron(III), is strongly bound by transferrin, a protein found in serum and other secretions... Transferrin binds iron tightly and, because it does so, it acts as a powerful antibiotic simply by denying this essential metal to any invading bacteria which need iron to multiply. As soon as our body registers a bacterial invasion, it produces more transferrin to mop up any free iron in the blood stream and 'hide' it in the liver." (p. 206)

"Neodymium-iron-boron (NIB) magnets are so powerful that those handling them must wear protective glasses--they fly together with such force that they can shatter and send splinters flying in all directions. At times young people have used these industrial magnets to attach ornaments to their cheeks by putting one of the small magnets on the inside of the mouth. However, the magnet and ornament have then proved impossible to pull apart, sometimes necessitating a visit to a hospital for surgical removal." (p. 270)

I have two suggestions for the next edition: (1) provide an index; (2) give us the value of the elements in terms of current (or relative) dollars or Euros. It would be fun to compare. (I realize that in some cases, the value of an element because it is so rare or not used for anything would be just an educated guess, but that's okay.)

Another interesting book by John Emsley is The Thirteenth Element: The Sordid Tale of Murder, Fire, and Phosphorus (2000). See my review.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic .......2006-06-08

Dittos to all who gave this book 5 stars. This is a fact filled book that anyone would find interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Building Blocks is a Delighful Read; fails as a solid reference.......2006-02-19

While I am greatly enjoying Nature's Building Blocks by John Emsley, I am sorely disappointed in not finding an index for this wonderful book. When trying to go back and pull out some gem or another, I find myself groping and grumbling at this editorial oversight.

5 out of 5 stars Ah, cool chem book...wish I had had it a semester ago..........2005-12-16

I've been teaching chemistry for the last three semester at our local community college. Never mind the fact that my major was in neuroscience (emphasis on studying disease in the brain). I had loads of chemistry classes, so it wasn't like I was coming into these classrooms with no previous knowledge.

But I've been having problems first of all with the quality of the textbooks recommended to teach with...actually, had to beg the school to get a different book because the chem textbook they were using was very wrong in so many problems and even basic text. Not only was I finding them, but the students were finding them also.

The next problem I'm having is the overwhelming emphasis put in general chemistry on math, rather than on the science of chemistry and the elements. Yes, the students need basic algebraic constructs, but if all the teaching in chemistry is mathematically-related, I lose my students very quickly in an area which can be loads of fun to study (given a great teacher who knows how to teach it...which I luckily had two great teachers in chemistry).

So I've been looking at the books being recommended to me by Amazon.com, and this is the third book. I liked the other ones. They were fun and had some hilarious history, but first of all I want my students to become really familiar with the periodical table and all of the elements. All the math in the world, without a basic understanding of the elements is going to lead no where, especially since my students are usually going into medical fields.

This book is clean and concisely written, and I can hardly wait to use it this coming semester.

4 out of 5 stars A comprehensive list of properties for many compounds........2000-04-19

This book covers a widee range of physical properties. The major criticism that I have for this reference book is that the data is presented in a way that is not always readily useful in creating spreadsheets and programs to use the data efficiently.

Other more historical references also have a more comprehensive representation of the data that in this book (although it would be difficult to fit all the detailed information of every compound out there into one book). Not a bad place to start to look for information - but no means a bible.

5 out of 5 stars Handbook supplies huge amount of properties information........1999-11-08

The author has produced a unique chemical, physical, and thermodynamics properties reference for scientists, researchers, chemists, and engineers. Those working in agricultural chemicals, environmental studies, explosion hazards, petroleum refining, petrochemicals, pollution control, safety and health, soil and groundwater remediation, and many other fields where finding properties data is important, will find this handbook highly beneficial. Dr. Yaws, assisted by colleagues and students, has worked for years in the fields of properties correlation, usage, estimation, and values collection from hundreds of references.

The NST/Engineers, Inc. reviewers found that in this book, in a compact form, readers will learn to use methods for getting massive amounts of temperature-variable data for a number of important properties variables. That is, as opposed to the older method of property versus temperature for each chemical compound being presented as a separate table, here key constants are provided in a single row of data. The compact form used is the correlation equation that contains the constants. You get the property value you want, at a temperature you choose, by making a fairly simple calculation. However, many other useful tables are provided where properties data is simply listed. As it is, the book has nearly eight hundred pages. Had the older method been used exclusively, it would have required a library of books.

The correlation equations have been either developed or selected from the literature. References providing a deeper understanding of the correlations are provided. The typical correlation equation used gives the property as the dependent variable, temperature as the independent variable, and values for the necessary constants. The range of temperatures is given over which the correlation and its constants are most valid. Both experimentally-measured and estimated data that are considered reliable have been used in determining the constants.

An example is the table of constants and their valid temperature range for the Gibbs (Free) Energy of Formation, delta Gf, specifically for organic compounds as gases. It is based on a correlation equation that is a series expansion in temperature. A table row gives the organic's name and formula, values for the three constants, and the valid temperature range. Just in case you want the delta Gf value at room temperature, the measured value at 298K is listed. If you want to check your calculating ability, the calculated value at 500K is also listed. All temperatures are in Kelvin. The text explains that delta Gf values are used in determining the probability that a proposed chemical reaction, or decomposition, will take place. For a reaction, you select reactants and reaction products that make a balanced equation. Using the table, you add the delta Gf values for all the products and subtract from that total all the delta Gf values of the reactants. If the result is negative, the reaction will probably occur. The more negative the result, the more likely the reaction. If the result is positive a reaction is not expected.

The table for inorganics is different. Only values at room temperature are given. However, room temperature values for Helmholtz Energy of Formation (used in estimating the energy of vapor cloud explosions) and Entropy of Formation (also used in explosion estimates) are listed.

Other correlation-keyed tables presented are: Heat Capacities of Gases, Liquids and Solids; Enthalpy of Vaporization; Vapor Pressure; Liquid Density; Surface Tension; Enthalpy of Formation of Gases; Solubility of Organic Compounds in Water Containing Salt up to Saturation, at selected temperatures; Solubility of Organic Compounds in Water as a Function of Temperature; Henry's Law Constant for Organic Compounds in Water; Adsorption of Organics on Activated Carbon; Soil Sorption Coefficient for Organics in Water; Viscosity of Gases and Liquids; Thermal Conductivity of Gases, Liquids, and Solids; and Coefficient of Expansion of Liquids.

Major data tables presented are: Critical Properties and Acentric Factor; Enthalpy of Fusion; Refractive Index, Dipole Moment, and Radius of Gyration; Entropy and Entropy of Formation of Gases; Solubility Parameter,Liquid Volume, and Van Der Waals Area and Volume; Solubility in Water and Octanol-Water Partition Coefficient for Organic Compounds; Explosive Limits in Air, Flash Point, and Autoignition Temperature; Enthalpy of Combustion of Organic Compounds at 77 deg. F; and Exposure Limits for Safeguarding Health.

Note the application of a number of these tables to air and water pollution control and soil remediation projects. Keeping in mind that estimations have played an important part in preparing the tables in the handbook, users must understand that if carefully determined experimental data could be obtained where it does not now exist, such values could vary from values obtained from the tables. However, where the author has checked estimated and correlation data with measured data, the variation was usually no more than several percent.

There are helpful appendixes listing: organics by increasing carbon content in the formula, name, and CAS Number; inorganics listed alphabetically by formula, with name and CAS Number; then organics and inorganics by increasing CAS Number; and finally organics and inorganics listed alphabetically by their synonyms that you might see in U.S. industrial or international chemical literature, together with formulas, the name used in the handbook's tables, and the CAS Number.

The great advantages of the book are that it provides access to such a large amount of properties data that otherwise would cost the searcher a great amount of time and effort to obtain, and it is in a compact form.

5 out of 5 stars Essential compilation of data for many process fluids.......1999-04-30

This book is a reasonably well ordered compilation of process fluid properties for a remarkably broad range of fluids. This book is a "must have" for anyone dealing with a broad range of process industries. It is a "good to have" for all other engineers working in chemical process industry.

2 out of 5 stars plain collection of data.......2006-10-19

I bought this book not realizing that is nothing more that two sheets for each element, collecting useful, but quite easily found data. Do not expect any written text. In the internet era, just look at the NIST site, I hardly see the need of such compilation.

5 out of 5 stars The Chemical Elements That Make Up The World.......2004-12-14

For the first time all the key facts about the 100 or so elements that make up the world. Easy-to-use in about 300 pages. This is the best book of this type that I have ever seen. "The Elements" is a handy reference for chemistry students and teachers and for the lay person who wants to learn more. You will learn the history and structure of each element and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference for Chemists or Chemistry Teachers.......1998-03-27

This is the book that I tell my students is my "bible." I use it in class in and in the preparation of my exams. The information in it is well organized and as up-to-date at it can be for the subject matter. Some of the "elements" are not there but that is because they were discovered after the publication date. I highly recommend this book to my colleagues.

A long-awaited comprehensive treatment, it covers the field from a history of the industry, through the fundamentals of thermodynamics and electrochemistry, to the treatment and disposal of the waste products of manufacture. While membrane cells are considered state-of-the-art, the handbook does not ignore mercury and diaphragm cells. They are considered both from a historical perspective and as examples of current technology that yet evolves. Special attention to paid to safe handling of the products, the obligations of Responsible Care®, and process safety management. Other major topics include corrosion, membranes, electrolyzer design, brine preparation and treatment, and the design and operation of processing facilities. The coverage of membranes is both fundamental and applied. The underlying transport processes and practical experience with existing types of membrane both are covered, as is electrolyzer design. The book explores the basic electrode processes and the fundamentals of current distribution in electrolyzers as well as the characteristics of the leading cell designs while the appendix offers selected physical property data. The authors, each with extensive experience in chlor-alkali technology but with diverse backgrounds and fields of specialization, achieve both breadth and depth. Anyone with interest in the large field of chlor-alkali manufacture and distribution, and indeed in industrial electrochemistry in general, will find something useful here. The Handbook offers not only broad coverage, but also in depth treatment of each topic. It will be an asset to managers, process engineers and operating personnel working in the chlor-alkali industry. This book provides valuable information to engineers and scientists involved in development of chlor-alkali technology and in the design of new plant or upgrading of existing plants. It will be especially valuable to universities as it begins with fundamentals and progresses methodically throu gh each step involved in chlor-alkali production, including environmental issues. from the Foreword by Barrie S. Gilliatt, Executive Director, Euro Chlor "Anyone with interest in the large field of chlor-alkali manufacture and distribution, and indeed in industrial electrochemistry in general, will find something useful here. The work is recommended to students; chlor-alkali technologists; electrochemists; engineers; and producers, shippers, packagers, distributors, and consumers of chlorine, caustic soda, and caustic potash. This book is thoroughly up to date and should become the standard reference in its field. "

            Book Description

Volume 4 expands this series to include inorganic compounds and elements in addition to the organic compounds covered in the first three volumes. The data are presented in graphs for viscosity as a function of temperature. The graphs are arranged by chemical formula to provide ease of use; many of them cover the full range from melting point to boiling point to critical point. Common units are used, but each graph displays a conversion factor to provide English units.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, bit expensive..........2006-09-07

              All,
This book is a little bit pricey. That being said it is a must for those of us doing hydrogenations/reductions. The choice of catalyst/solvent/temperature is extremely important. The book provides very good summaries and references if you need more details.
Overall I am very happy with this book, it's one of the few good review books out there.
