Book Description

As one of the most popular heat transfer texts, Jack Holman's HEAT TRANSFER is noted for its clarity, accessible approach, and inclusion of many examples and problem sets. The new Ninth Edition retains the straight-forward, to-the-point writing style while covering both analytical and empirical approaches to the subject. Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on physical understanding while, at the same time, relying on meaningful experimental data in those situations that do not permit a simple analytical solution. New examples and templates provide students with updated resources for computer-numerical solutions.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Good and the Bad.......2005-02-27

The Good:
- A nice amout of examples.
- Whatever is explained is explained pretty well.
- Friendly style of writing.
The Bad:
- No solution manual.
- Some mistakes in the solved examples.
The Worst:
- There is no focus on the heat transfer sceince itself - the equations are "dumped" on you with no explanations/development or even some example experiments that were made to get to the equations. The focus is on application of the equations to engineering problems and methods of solving differential equations.

The bottom line:
This book will not give you an understanding of the heat transfer science, but the ability to solve heat transfer problems. If that's what you look for - this is your book. Otherwise, look for something else.

5 out of 5 stars Why only five stars?.......2004-07-24

This book is a winner . Forget about any other substitute . In this detailed text you will find all you want about every ine of the multiple equations about the heat transfer , clearly and powerful illustrated . The level of the problems are gradually increased so when you decide to solve them you will become in a real gladiator in this topic .
I recommend it deeply . Since I acquired it I noticed the little difference that makes the great difference . This is a heavyweight text and hardly you will find out another better than this .
A must for Chemical , Mechanical and Industrial engineers!

5 out of 5 stars A League of Its Own.......2004-01-23

In Holman's (the author) spirit I'll keep this simple. This text (along with Moran/Shapiro's introductory text in thermodynamics) is among the best textbooks met during the course of a civil, aerospace or mechanical enginnering study. The language used constitutes what should be an "industrial standard" for engineering textbooks. It keeps the level of attention peaking by avoiding loose talk and wordy explanations where this is not required. This is (academic) litterature in its truest sense. I own about 50 science/engineering texts within fluid mechanics, solid mechanics/dynamics, mathematics, physics and more. Among these, this book is top three - no small feat.

2 out of 5 stars textbook critic.......2003-11-30

This is a required classical text in most senior Mechanical Engineering programs. However, it was a difficult text to get through especially the sketchy discussed complex mathematical material -- if one is not well versed in Partial Differential Equations.

For most students, the text's analytical developments are difficult to grasp in the beginning since the author was inclinded to stay with the typical old style in writing engineering texts where as little as possible is given to the students!

I hope we're getting away from this rediculous old writing style and methodologies which ultimately needlessly blocks many good students from doing well or graduate.

Engineering textbook writers are slowly getting away from this horrible old style, by providing more comprehensive examples and making solutions manuals available to those students who wish to purchase them.

But, here I think that real market forces that brought about some needed change was the popular Schaum Outlines and REAs solution books -- giving the students what they really needed to do problems. So authors slowly began competing with these growing anciliary technical products!

Please note, in the past years, it was almost inhuman what technical students had to endure to get through their required courses to graduate.

Author J. P. Holman began in the 1960's with a really sketchy Heat Transfer textbook assuming students undestood the analytical proofs and then slowly began to make changes that gave the students more information in which to understand the complex analytical Partial Differential Equation derivations and solutions. The concepts of heat flow are not difficult it is the mathematics, the assumptions and the numerous steps reaching a solutions that is wild.

Hopefully, someday, we'll get away altogether from technical textbooks, which are inherently a 2-Dimensional medium, and move to modern medias that easily allow authors to write textbooks having 3-Dimensional data so students can quickly see and understand what the author is trying to convey.

Most technical courses deal with 3-Dimensional information so it is appropraite that authors move to new mediums soon and finally wean ourselves from technical textbooks altogether.

A classical. Required reading for heat transfer design in heater convection sections. I found it simple and practical. By the way, I am looking for a new book (as mine was stolen).

    Book Description

The concepts and relations pertinent to the solution of many thermodynamic problems encountered in multi-phase, multi-component systems are developed in this volume. Emphasis is placed on a comprehension and development of general expressions for solving such problems, rather than ready-made equations for particular applications. The first half of the book is devoted to defining the thermodynamic functions and to generating the fundamental relations relevant to chemical systems at equilibrium. The second half concentrates on the application of these relations to real systems and the methods which can be used to obtain additional connections. Throughout, the methods of Gibbs are used with emphasis on the chemical potential.

        Book Description

Natural phenomena consist of simultaneously occurring transport processes and chemical reactions. These processes may interact with each other and lead to instabilities, fluctuations, and evolutionary systems. The objective of this book is to explore the unifying role of thermodynamics in natural phenomena. Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics, Second Edition analyzes the transport processes of energy, mass, and momentum transfer processes, as well as chemical reactions. It considers various processes occurring simultaneously, and provides students with more realistic analysis and modelling by accounting for possible interactions.
This second edition updates and expands most of the chapters of the first edition by focusing on the balance equations of mass, momentum, energy, and entropy together with the Gibbs equation for coupled processes of physical, chemical, and biological systems. Every chapter contains examples practical problems to be solved.
This book will be effective in senior and graduate education in chemical, mechanical, systems, biomedical, tissue, biological, and biological systems engineering, as well as physical, biophysical, biological, chemical, and biochemical sciences.

        * Will help readers in understanding and modelling some of the coupled and complex systems, such as coupled transport and chemical reaction cycles in biological systems
        * Presents a unified approach for interacting processes - combines analysis of transport and rate processes
        * Introduces the theory of nonequilibrium thermodynamics and its use in simultaneously occurring transport processes and chemical reactions of physical, chemical, and biological systems
        * A useful text for students taking advanced thermodynamics courses

Studies of thermodynamics often fail to demonstrate how the mathematical intricacies of the subject relate to practical laboratory applications. Thermodynamics of Pharmaceutical Systems makes these connections clear, emphasizing specific applications to pharmaceutical systems in a study created specifically for contemporary curriculums at colleges of pharmacy.

Students investigating drug discovery, drug delivery, and drug action will benefit from Kenneth Connors’s authoritative treatment of the fundamentals of thermodynamics as well as his attention to drug molecules and experimental considerations. An extensive appendix that reviews the mathematics needed to master the pharmacy curriculum proves an invaluable reference. Connors divides his one-of-a-kind text into three sections: Basic Thermodynamics, Thermodynamics of Physical Processes, and Thermodynamics of Chemical Processes; chapters include:

Thermodynamics need not be a mystery nor be confined to the realm of mathematical theory. Thermodynamics of Pharmaceutical Systems introduces students of pharmacy to the profound thermodynamic applications in the laboratory while also serving as a handy resource for practicing researchers.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Text On Applied Optimization Methods.......2001-11-22

Excellent introductory text on the various mathematical methods used to optimize thermal systems. Example problems with solutions in each chapter quickly reinforce the concepts discussed. Answers to most of the problems are a beneficial aid in helping the student arrive at the correct solution rather than stumbling down a blind alley.

There could be more depth in the discussion of thermal systems and design concepts but overall the tradeoff between optimization methods and design concepts is good.

5 out of 5 stars Great for starting to design any type system.........1997-11-17

I was taught from edition one of this book back in the early 70's. Once the second edition came out I jumped at it and was not disappointed. The third edition came out in 1989 and I got it at once. Now I hope Professor Stoecker is still working on a fourth edition so that I can also get it.

This is the best book I have ever seen to help someone understand the in's and out's of design; any design, from system concept to system completion. I can't say enough about this book.

The optimization subjects are as simple to understand as came be made with excellent explanations.

Subjects covered are economics, equation fitting, modeling systems, system simulations, lagrange multiplers, search methods, dynamic programming, geometric programming, modeling of thermal properties, steady state simulation, dynamic behavior of thermal systems, calculus methods of optimization, probabilistic approaches to design and more.

Included in the appendices are a list of comprehensive problems and a computer program for generalized system simulation.

You can't go wrong with this one.

                Book Description

As the cost and complexity of designing thermal systems have increased, the need to understand and improve the design process has also grown. This book describes recent progress. The book begins with a brief history and outline of developments in thermal system design. Chapters then discuss computer design tools for the power and chemical industries, predicting physical properties with computational tools, "pinch analysis" to improve thermal efficiency, applications of the energy concept, thermoeconomics, and the potential for artificial intelligence and expert systems in the design of thermal systems. With chapters written by internationally recognized authorities, the book offers a state-of-the-art review for both researchers and practitioners in mechanical, aerospace, chemical, and power engineering.
