3 out of 5 stars Scant physical explanation........2001-04-20

Venables' text fairly thoroughly covers modern surface science techniques. He summarizes thirty years of fundamental research and hits on modern interest areas. However, for a text labeled as an introduction, very few introductory ideas are adequately explained. Where are the energy level diagrams? Energies associated with various processes are arbitrarily assigned to be positive or negative, and reference energies are never mentioned. Attempts to solve chapter ending problems invariably lead to frustration, as the questions are vague, and the suggested results are impossible to obtain without consulting other, more detailed texts like Dejenqueres and Spanjaard. The sections on crystal growth are impenetrable unless one reads the referenced papers, but this is inexcusable for an introductory text. A more suitable title for the book would be: "A Survey of Surface Science," or "Collected Citations of Surface Science Research: 1970-2000"

    Book Description

Active matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCDs) are the preferred choice when thin, low power, high quality, and lightweight flat panel displays are required. Here is the definitive guide to the theory and applications of AMLCDs.

Contemporary portable communication and computing devices need high image quality, light weight, thin, and low power flat panel displays. The answer to this need is the color active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD). The rides of AMLCD technology over less than two decades to undisputed dominance as a flat panel display has been breathtaking, and designers of portable devices need a thorough understanding of the theory and applications of AMLCDs. Willem den Boer, a holder of over 30 patents in imaging technologies, has created this guide to AMLCD theory, operating principles, addressing methods, driver circuits, application circuits, and alternate flat display technologies (including active matrix flat panel image sensors). Numerous design and applications examples illustrate key points and make them relevant to real-world engineering tasks.

"Fundamentals" is right in the title. Covers AMLCD physics, technology and manufacturing in a very straightforward and easy to read text. It is useful if you are curious about how AMLCD's work, but does not have enough depth for serious study.

        Book Description

Thin film deposition is a broad and burgeoning field, with applications ranging from razor blade coatings to quantum-well lasers. However, much of the available thin film literature is based on empirical knowledge, and focuses only on specific processes or applications. This volume rectifies that situation, offering a complete description od the theory and technology of thin film deposition. The book's broad perspective gives readers the tools to objectively evaluate and choose the appropriate thin film process for a specific application. This indispensable volume also includes a complete list of symbols and an extensive index.

4 out of 5 stars Summarises the field well.......2004-06-09

Though this book is now ten years old, its papers should still hold up well. It surveys the then new field of making thin films by using pulses of high intensity laser light. The papers are written by experts in these methods.

Nucleation dynamics and how a film can grow under deposition pulses are explained in one chapter.

Several chapters also discuss the related subject of laser-induced ablation of surfaces. Studies are summarised of the characteristics of the ablated material. In some ways, ablation can be considered the inverse process to deposition.

One attraction of the deposition methods is to apply these in the construction of high temperature superconducting films. Typically, these are complex oxides, of 4 or more elements. The commercial viability of these materials depends in no small part on being able to manufacture them cheaply. The book has a chapter expanding on the praticality of this application.

4 out of 5 stars A good book indeed; highly recommend it........2007-03-21

To the curious minds of tomorrow:

I like this book for it is a rather comprehensive treatment of the subject, and is written in a clear prose. However, one should realize that the focus is solely on the mechanical behavior of thin films, which could be attributed to the authors background and research interests.

Virtually all properties of thin films (electronic, magnetic, optical, ferroelecrtic, multiferroic etc.) are affected if not chiefly governed by elastic coupling of "order" parameters with strains and such, especially at nanoscopic length scales. However, this book is primarly devoted to mechanical behavior of thin films in an isolated fashion. For instance, misfit dislocation and critical thickness phenomena in thin films is treated with linear elasticity models, so much so that it is of limited use in thin films of strongly correlated systems (ferromagnetics, ferroelecrtics, multiferroics etc.). Therefore, the uninitiated reader should proceed with caution.

At any rate, the book by Freund and Suresh would be an ideal introductory survey for those interested in the mechanical behavior of thin solid films, and I highly recommend it.

          Cheers,

Okay we followed this book for our lecture in thin films given by the first author of the book LB Freund, one of the best instructors i ever had. i will try not to be biased by his teaching skills while writing this review. i would say that its a must reference who are working in thin film area be it experimental or modeling. but i believe that you need to have a sound background atleast in continuum mechanics and elasticity to fully follow the mechanics (of deformation) part of the thin film on your own. the best thing i liked about this book is its methodical structure for e.g. deriving the basic Stoney's relation by minimizing the energy, then talk about its assumption in detail and then removing those assumptions one by one to make the relation more realistic (and offcourse more complicated). there are other things like material properties of common thin film materials used in microelectronics, topics on surface morphology etc. his writing style is very clear... again not for someone who doesnt have necessary background.
