Customer Reviews:
A brilliantly explained text.......2002-10-24
A brilliantly explained text containing extremely good applications, and above all, clear and well-referenced recipes. Most pitfalls in microscopy are the result of not following optimal processing conditions. After reading Dr. Hayat's present publication, there is no excuse for not following well-tested reliable protocols.
This Handbook is the most authoritative publication in the disciplines of microscopy, immunohistochemistry and antigen retrieval methods. It is expected to become a classic in teaching and research. This book should not be absent in your personal collection, as well at the library.
- Taken from a review by Prof. Dr. E. Marani, Afdeling Fysiologie, Leiden, The Netherlands.
Book Description
Few technical manuals have become standards in biomedicine. Antibodies: A Laboratory Manual, by Ed Harlow and David Lane, has had that status for a decade. Now there is a new and even higher standardUsing Antibodies: A Laboratory Manual.
Harlow and Lane have completely revised their guide to the use of immunoglobulin reagents in the laboratory. Chapters have been entirely rewritten, reorganized, and updated to provide background, context, and step-by-step instructions for techniques that range from choosing the right antibody and handling it correctly, to the proper methods for characterizing antigens in cells and solutions. New chapters on tagging proteins and epitope mapping are included.
Rather than presenting an array of solutions for working with antibodies and antigens, Using Antibodies instead identifies in each case the best approach to specific problems. These recommendations include more detail in the protocols, extensive advice on avoiding and solving problems, information regarding proper controls, and extensive illustration of theory, methods, and results, both good and bad. An additional bonus included with this manual is a set of Portable Protocols, step-by-step instructions for the most frequently used and essential techniques printed on spill-proof, durable cards that can be annotated and used directly at the bench.
The expert advice in Using Antibodies is presented using an imaginative design with extensive use of color and graphic elements calculated to help readers plan and execute their experiments efficiently and accurately. A newly available type of binding will maintain the manual's integrity during years of use.
Customer Reviews:
Should be [less money], Not [more money]!.......2002-10-21
Although I liked the outdated 1988 version of this book, this one is extremely simplistic and omits much of the previously included material. Most of the information included can be found on the web and is shallow compared to Current Protocols or other texts. Although it serves as a reasonable introduction for novices to this area it's extremely overpriced for [money]!!!
I would reccomend Monoclonal Antibodies by Goding ([money]),
Two Thumbs Up.......2000-10-25
This is an exceptional reference for anyone using abtibodies in the laboratory. It is a *must-have* for anyone venturing into unknown teritory. For the experienced individual forced to bang out new protocols with a cranky antibody, this reference is priceless.

Customer Reviews:
Good manual, though needs revision........2007-06-28
This laboratory manual is very concise and easy to read. The topics range from antibody production to protein/enzyme conjugation, with step by step instructions and formulations. Previous to most topics is given a fairly thorough background. One drawback is the fact that this book is nearly 20 years old (pub. 1988) and lacks a significant amount of progress made in the areas of homo and heterobifunctional linkers, PEGylation, and antibody engineering. Given a good price however, this would be a good reference manual.
An old classic, but still useful........2002-08-26
This classic is getting old...
But you cand find some important informations inside, classic protocols and keys-data to the antibodies-world.
A must-have reference for any today-biologist working with antibodies (immunostaining, immunoprecipitation, Western-blot, antibodies production, etc...).
An excellent summary of immunological methods........1998-01-16
This book is indespensible for those wishing to set up any type of antibody related methodology. Gives excellent overviews of immunodiagnostic methods (ELISA,RIA,etc.), antibody production (polyclonal and monoclonal), and includes basic summaries on the nature of the immune sytem in vivo. Especially useful to researchers developing immuno-techniques as it gives detailed methodologies.

Book Description
The aim of this book is to describe and discuss the preparation of immuno-gold probes, the progress and development of preparation methods suitable for immuno-electron microscopy, and the use of immuno-gold labeling at the microscopic level. The perspectives and limitations of the different methods used in combination with immuno-gold are evaluated not only in the methodology chapters, but also in the chapters where the validity of immuno-gold labeling is exemplified in a successful application to biological questions. In addition to examining cryosections as one of the most common preparation methods for immuno-electron microscopy, an alternative embedding method, such as freeze substitution of rapidly frozen samples, and replica methods, such as freeze-etching, fracture label, label fracture, and whole mount, are discussed in detail. This book is an excellent source for cell biologists, researchers, technicians, and students.
Customer Reviews:
Good Information, but Expensive and Brief.......2004-10-07
This book contains useful information on utilizing good bacteria, like the cultures contained in yogurt, to increase your level of health. The are interesting chapters on using probiotics to treat cancer and autism, but I was more interested from the standpoint of maintaining healthy digestion. If you have taken any antibiotics, there is a good chance that your intestinal flora is out of whack and that probiotics can help.
In any event, my only complaint is that the information is rather sparse in terms of general health questions given the price of the book. I was happy with the product descriptions in the last chapter, which I found helpful in selecting the right product for my personal use.

Book Description
Immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization are widely used biomedical sciences. They are essential in medical diagnosis and in cell biology research. Affinity labeling is the central goal of the experimental strategy involving a series of techniques in a logical order; from the effects of specimen fixation, through specimen preparation to expose the antigen, to optimizing immunolabeling, to assessing the result and finally to safety considerations. Numerous examples of these techniques in biomedical sciences are included, as well as experimental assays and practical tips. This survey of methods will serve as an invaluable reference source in any laboratory setting (academic, industrial or clinical) involved in research in almost every branch of biology or medicine, as well as in pharmaceutical, biotechnological and clinical applications.

Introduction to Immunocytochemistry
ASIN: 0896035700 |
Book Description
Lorette Javois' timely new 2nd edition revises and updates her widely acclaimed collection of step-by-step immunocytochemical methods, one that is now used in many biological and biomedical research programs. The methods are designed for researchers and clinicians who wish to visualize molecules in plant or animal embryos, tissue sections, cells, or organelles. In addition to cutting-edge protocols for purifying and preparing antibodies, light microscopic analysis, confocal microscopy, FACS, and electron microscopy, this revised edition contains many new methods for applying immunocytochemical techniques in the clinical laboratory and in combination with in situ hybridization.
Book Description
The New Edition of this popular text features world-renowned experts who offer the most current information and reliable guidance on immunohistochemical diagnoses in surgical pathology and cytopathology. The book is organized in a consistent format of organ systems, specifically designed to target diagnostic dilemmas in surgical pathology. Each chapter features an introduction and a systematic approach to the diagnostic entities of that organ system. Readers will also find easy-to-understand diagnostic algorithms and "immunohistograms" that depict immunostaining patterns of tumors, as well as charts, tables, and high-quality color histologic images that assist in making a definitive diagnosis.
Customer Reviews:
Useful and worth buying, but with one major drawback.......2006-07-17
The content of this book is adequate and it is written in an easy-to-read, flowing style. It could use some more tables for comparison of immuno. panels to help in differential diagnoses, but over-all it is a decent and very helpful everyday reference. The index, however, has much to be desired. Many immunoperoxidase stains are not listed individually in a catalog style, nor are the specific cells/organs/organ structures that they stain, so unless you already know what entity a specific stain is used for or know alternate diagnoses or names, you may not be able to find it. You can't just look up a specific stain you may have heard about and want to research further. The index is a critical component of a well-written book and is just as important as text it represents--it's no use having a book full of information if you can't find what you need. I hope this issue is addressed in the next edition, in which case then, this book may reach the status of excellent.
Must Have Textbook.......2004-03-12
This reference is a must have! If you are a surgical pathologist and do not have this textbook you are setting yourself up to fail. It is extremely well written and with all the color photos it is a great value for the money. I probably use this text more than any other reference textbook. The insight gleened from reading this text has saved me on a number of challenging cases. The tables are excellent and easy to read. I can't wait for the next edition.
