Organic Chem Lab Manual.......2006-11-10
Perfect/new condition with VERY fast shipping. Cheapest price I could find, and was significantly cheaper than elsewhere. I had the first lab, and ordered the manual that night assuming that it would not arrive before my next lab, but it did! I was very pleasantly surprised. Thanks!
an inexpensive yet effective lab book for undergraduate orga.......1998-05-28
An inexpensive, yet effective lab manual for undergraduate organic chemistry. The students do not have to buy a hard cover text, full of colors. The reagents used are cheap and, generally, available at low cost. There is great variety of experiments- some are standard syntheses, some are kinetcis, but above all there is a great qualitative analysis chapter. The techniques illustrated in the first few chapters are essential in running high yield syntheses. An excellent set of appendices with subjects like % yield, how to make solutions and how to balance a redox equation. This is a book where one learns how to do expts. without necessarily running a very expensive lab.

The best.......2007-07-24
I bought this book about half way through my postgraduate studies in Physical chemistry, then immediately kicked myself for not buying it earlier. If you're a bit rusty in QM, as I was, then the chapter on QM is worth the price of admission alone, the same could really be said for all of the 5 chapters (Group Theory, QM, Vibrations, MO Theory and Electronic Transitions) though as they are all clear, well constructed, with nice problems (and solutions for most). Great introduction for any aspiring Physical Chemist.
Excellent spectroscopy book.......2007-05-17
There was really no need for my short review to convince anyone interested or even marginally active in the field of molecular spectroscopy that the SYMMETRY AND SPECTROSCOPY-Introduction to Vibrational and Electronic Spectroscopy by D.C. Harris and M.D. Bertolucci is an excellent presentation of the underlying physical principles, the laws and parameters involved in the measurement and, above all and in accordance with the title, the involvement of symmetry on the appearance of virbrational and electronic spectra.
Recommended, in my opinion, to both students and tutors, and to those interested in the application or the theoretical part of the aforementioned spectroscopic fields.
loved this book .......2007-03-29
I used this book to supplement my molecular spec. course many years ago. As others have noted - very friendly in its tone.
For other classic books in this area look at:
1. Introduction to Molecular Spectroscopy by Gordon M. Barrow, McGraw-Hill, 1962 (You should avoid his more commonly found book with a similar title: The Structure of Molecules: An Introduction to Molecular Spectroscopy, published by W. A. Benjamin, 1964. This book is too basic.)
2. Introduction to Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy by William A. Guillory, Allyn and Bacon, 1977
Check out my other reviews for other chem books.
Great book........2007-03-17
Got this book to study for a Spectroscopy of Optical Materials course and it was wonderfull. Easy to follow and complete.
Great book for a difficult subject.......2006-02-26
Harris and Bertolucci do a great job of covering every detail needed to know to understand the subject. Good guide to confusing subject.

Customer Reviews:
Great Supplemental/Review Material.......2005-04-06
For as cheap as it is, this is a great value. It reviews every concept in physical chemistry very well. Obviously it won't replace your textbook, but it will at least cover subjects that maybe your textbook omits. The outline was last updated in 1989, but, honestly, physical chemistry has not changed in at least the last twenty or thirty years. Conceptually, all of physical chemistry has remained the same, so I would not say that this book is obsolete.
No good, stick to your textbook!.......2005-01-21
The examples are from a different planet! The text is very general in the important concepts and too detailed in the obscure stuff; this is definintley not intended for someone new to PCHEM. Stick to you textbook, like Atkins, which probably has better explanations and problems.
GOOD, BUT OBSOLETE CONTENTS.......2003-03-02
The over-five hundred pages that make-up this "Schaum's Outline of Physical Chemistry" were dedicated to giving overview of every aspect of the subject. The book's presentations and analyses are easy-to-follow; and would be appreciated by any Physical Science undergrad.
I valued its exploits in the fields of: Thermodynamics, Equilibrium Properties, Chemical Kinetics, and Intermolecular Forces. Its information are concise; yet, detailed enough. There are both tutorials and worked examples in every chapter: hence, making it a fine revision tool.
However, bear in mind that the contents of this book are more or less obsolete. The fact that it has not been revised since 1988 is discouraging. In view of this, I am reluctant to recommend it!
Excellent supplement!.......2000-11-06
This book is a fabulous supplement to any physical chemistry text. It even includes reviews on quantum and solid state. I found this book especially helpful as i am a physics major taking p.chem with little chemistry background.

Introductory Raman Spectroscopy, Second Edition
ASIN: 0471607312 |
Book Description
Surface Enhanced Vibrational Spectroscopy (SEVS) has reached maturity as an analytical technique, but until now there has been no single work that describes the theory and experiments of SEVS. This book combines the two important techniques of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and surface-enhanced infrared (SEIR) into one text that serves as the definitive resource on SEVS.
- Discusses both the theory and the applications of SEVS and provides an up-to-date study of the state of the art
- Offers interpretations of SEVS spectra for practicing analysts
- Discusses interpretation of SEVS spectra, which can often be very different to the non-enhanced spectrum - aids the practicing analyst
Customer Reviews:
A great addition to my reference library.......2007-09-01
Concise, comprehensive coverage of SERS, SEIRA, and single molecule SERS and SEIRA techniques, including theoretical background. Inspired me to continue my studies in this area, despite the often unruly nature of these systems. Lists many important references.
Book Description
In contrast to diatomic molecules, the spectroscopic study of polyatomic molecules was for a long time carried out principally by work in the infrared region and by the study of the Raman effect. However, the considerable improvement in vacuum ultraviolet techniques and the development for the study of free radicals have made possible a rapid development of the study of electronic spectra. The object of this book is to present the results of this new development without neglecting the significant older work on the subject.

Book Description
Today, fluorescence spectroscopy is an important tool of investigation in many areas. In analytical sciences, its advantage is extremely high sensitivity and selectivity - even single molecules can be detected - and it achieves a high spatial resolution and time resolution in combination with microscopic techniques or laser techniques, respectively. In material sciences, this is used to study structure and dynamics of surfaces. Particularly in the areas of biochemistry and molecular genetics, fluorescence spectroscopy has become a dominating technique. Together with the latest imaging techniques, fluorescence spectroscopy allows a real-time observation of the dynamics of intact biological systems with an unprecedented resolution.
This book offers a comprehensive introduction to and survey of fluorescence spectroscopy. It is written for newcomers and active researchers alike who are learning to apply fluorescence methods in the areas of chemistry, physical chemistry, polymers, materials, colloids, biochemistry, biology, medical and pharmaceutical research.
Customer Reviews:
great for beginners, but too few references.......2003-12-07
This is a great introductory book. Beautifully edited, very well written, with a lot of information to start digging each subject; I just missed a few more references in each chapter, and also more references to journals and not just other books, and then I would have been a 5 star.
Book Description
An enormous amount of research on lasers and their applications in spectroscopy has been done over the decade since the first edition of this text, was published in 1974. The last five of the book's 14 chapters have been completely rewritten for this new edition to reflect these developments. They take up molecular beams, masers, lasers, optical resonance spectroscopy, coherent transient spectroscopy, multiple-photon spectroscopy, and "spectroscopy beyond molecular constants."
What has not changed in this edition is the breadth of its coverage, one of the features that led to its wide use as a graduate-level text. It is still the only available text that presents from a consistent theoretical perspective an introduction both to classical atomic and molecular spectroscopy and to the spectroscopic advances made possible by modern optics, particularly laserbased methods.
Although the author has taken care not to lose sight of the lore and tradition of classical spectroscopy, his underlying interest is in molecular dynamics and the interaction of radiation and matter, in addition to the tabulation and assignment of spectral lines and their interpretation in terms of molecular structure.
The first nine chapters deal mainly with classical topics. The presentations have been updated and corrected, and a more consistent notation is employed in this edition. After a review of the quantum-mechanical background and atomic spectra, the book discusses the rotational, vibrational, and electronic spectra of diatomic molecules. A brief presentation of rudimentary group theory then leads to a consideration of the spectra of polyatomic molecules.
Jeffrey I. Steinfeld is Professor of Chemistry at MIT.
