Strong Coverage of Spectroscopy, interesting labs.......2001-04-15
This book contains an exceptionally strong coverage of spectroscopy. Proton and carbon NMR are well explained, with detailed tables to predict and justify chemical shifts. IR spec is also well explained. A limited discussion of mass spec is also present. The laboratory exercises are clear in most cases, with a few minor exceptions. Be sure to read the instructions before lab as a few exercises contin ambiguous instructions that become more clear if the entire lab is read first. The number of syntheses is excellent, and many laboratory exercises contain interesting procedures that result in various colored, or common products. As a student of one of the authors, Dr. Douglas F. Taber, I have found this book to be a useful reference for spectroscopy as well as an excellent lab text.
Book Description
Now in its fifth edition, the book has been updated to include more detailed descriptions of new or more commonly used techniques since the last edition as well as remove those that are no longer used, procedures which have been developed recently, ionization constants (pKa values) and also more detail about the trivial names of compounds.
In addition to having two general chapters on purification procedures, this book provides details of the physical properties and purification procedures, taken from literature, of a very extensive number of organic, inorganic and biochemical compounds which are commercially available. This is the only complete source that covers the purification of laboratory chemicals that are commercially available in this manner and format.
* Complete update of this valuable, well-known reference
* Provides purification procedures of commercially available chemicals and biochemicals
* Includes an extremely useful compilation of ionisation constants

Cannot properly review because amazon won't sell it........2007-05-27
This is more a review of amazon then the book. I have been trying to order the digital version for close to six months and I am encountering the same idiotic obstacles. Amazon will let me add the digital version to my shopping cart from my wish list. When I get to my shopping cart the book is not there and I get a message telling me to go to the product page for instructions on how to order. Go to the product page and there are no instructions. WTF????? Emailing customer support about the issue and I am told to follow the instructions on the product page. WTF???? So now not only has customer service failed to read my complaint they did not bother to check into my complaint. Why hasn't this situation been addressed?
An Absolute Essential for Chemists!.......2000-11-18
As a chemist, I am often in need of techniques for purification of various chemicals. Often time is a constraint and the "best" technique may be too time consuming, if one even knows what it is. This text offers several alternatives to the purificatin of most common compounds (especially solvents), including the best way to make the compound pure as well as other known techniques. One can then choose, based on the reaction one is doing whether one needs to use the best techniques or the fastest technique to get mostly pure material or somewhere inbetween. Unfortunately, often the text does not list the actual percent purity that each technique can yield (though it is often easy enough to guess which methodology will yield the best results.) An invaluable resource for any chemist, but especially for graduate students.
Great for the "Synthetic" Chemist.......2000-06-06
This is an indispensible resource for any synthetic chemist, either organic or inorganic (not sure about the biochemical section). This book has concise, informative entries on the purification of a vast number of common solvents and reagents. I don't know how any chemist can survive without having this on his/her bookshelf!
Great for the Organic Chemist.......1998-12-31
Like Carey & Sundberg, Jerry March, the Aldrich catalog, and the Merck Index, (etc.), this book should be a benchmate for the Organic Chemist. It is very good when one requires the purification of reagents, or the drying/purification of solvents. The protocols for purification are usually pretreatment followed by distillation or recrystallization, and can be carried out to give anywhere from moderately pure material, to giving the pure, pure substance.
Excellent for the research organic chemistry graduate student or the pharmaceutical industrial research chemist who likes to start with the purest materials, so as to leave only the investigative variables open to question.
However, in industry, although FedEx-ing new and pure reagents (and disposal of the old questionable ones!) is the easiest and encouraged method for research, it is often found that purification is totally appropriate--in these instances, Purification of Laboratory Chemicals (D.D. Perrin & W.L.F. Armarego) is highly recommended.
Book Description
This highly effective and practical manual is designed to be used as a supplementary text for the organic chemistry laboratory course - and with virtually any main text - in which experiments are supplied by the instructor or in which the students work independently. Each technique contains a brief theoretical discussion. Steps used in each technique, along with common problems that might arise. These respected and renowned authors include supplemental or related procedures, suggested experiments, and suggested readings for many of the techniques. Additionally, each chapter ends with a set of study problems that primarily stress the practical aspects of each technique, and microscale techniques are included throughout the text, as appropriate. Additional exercises, reference material, and quizzes are available online.

Good student text.......2000-06-28
The authors give a nice presentation of theory involved in recrystallization, distillation, chromatography, and extraction. The writing style is academic, but friendly enough to keep you interested. I found it great to read before doing the scheduled experiments in O-Chem lab. However, this is a very "student"-ish text and I seriously doubt professionals would find it useful, unless you're looking for a refresher course in the basic techniques. The labs I took had a significant amount of NMR involved; not much discussion in this text about that. The problems provided are usually good, but there are no answers given. I'd also recommend "Principles and Techniques in an Integrated Chem Laboratory" by Aikens, Bailey, et al.
Book Description
Prepared by John H. Nelson and Kenneth C. Kemp, both of The University of Nevada. This manual contains 43 finely tuned experiments chosen to introduce students to basic lab techniques and to illustrate core chemical principles. Pre-lab questions and post-lab questions have been revised and include detachable report sheets. Safety and disposal information has been expanded and includes waste management information. This new edition has been revised to correlate more tightly with the text.

43 experiments that are clearly laid out for student learning.......2006-09-14
Lab work has been a standard part of the study of chemistry since people have been studying chemistry. In fact, it was the practical experimentation that led to the learning that is written in the texts and taught in lectures. The experiments that chemistry students execute are not designed to discover presently unknown aspects of chemistry. It is essential that students be given clearly defined procedures that elucidate specific points that are related to the text they are studying in lecture. The purpose of lab work is to give the student a visceral connection to the material, to see in reality what they are reading about, and to develop their technique in working with precision, in detail, and in making correct and relevant observations.
This book provides 43 experiments that relate well to the 25 chapters of the main textbook. Each experiment lists clearly everything that will be needed for the experiment, discusses the point of the experiment and what is going to transpire during its execution, the exact procedure to be followed, the questions that need to be answered for the report (these are observations, calculations, deductions, equations, and so forth), pre-lab questions, and relevant diagrams. There are also appendices of useful information that will be needed during the experiments.
These experiments have been tested and tried and are geared to minimize the work of the instructor in refitting the lab when adopting the text and lab experiments. Since it is the 10th edition, I would expect that most things will work as expected. But in reality, one should always be prepared for the unexpected and work carefully around chemicals, flame, and other people.
A sound and interesting text and program of experiments.

Book Description
Renew your inorganic chemistry lab course. This completely revised and enlarged second edition of the classic now includes over 20 new experiments reflecting modern research, with many of the compounds only having very recently been described. The book offers detailed descriptions of more than 80 experiments, ranging from undergraduate to graduate level, covering organometallic, main group, solid state and coordination chemistry. Almost all reaction types, laboratory techniques and classes of compounds which constitute current curricula are exemplarily represented.
University teachers from all over the world have contributed experiments, each of which has been thoroughly tested. Special safety instructions are provided in each case, with highly hazardous substances substituted by less harmful ones wherever possible. The products are characterized by modern spectroscopic techniques and the book also includes exercises, questions and hints for further reading. A whole new set of experiments considers new knowledge gained by science education research: Discovery-oriented open-end experiments that resemble real research, allowing both teachers and students a more fascinating and efficient approach to standard courses in inorganic chemistry, already training the group-oriented approach to research carried out in academic and industrial settings.
Book Description
This flexible, reliable, accurate manual includes both macroscale and microscale procedures for each experiment. The level and writing style of the text, which emphasizes biochemical and biomedical applications, make it ideally suited for the mainstream organic chemistry laboratory.
Microscale experiment options allow instructors to purchase costly chemicals in small quantities while minimizing issues of environmental impact and hazardous waste disposal. Macroscale versions can be used for less costly experiments, giving students experience with the manipulation of conventional glassware.
- A student CD-ROM includes videos and photos related to the material in the text. Videos feature the exact glassware required for each experiment and demonstrate techniques for how to conduct experiments successfully and safely. Photos show lab equipment set-ups.
- Icons throughout the text direct students to the corresponding videos and photos on the CD-ROM. A letter or number code allows students to search the CD-ROM for the appropriate technique.
- "In this Experiment" is a new feature that appears before every microscale experiment. It presents the objective of the experiment and keeps students from getting bogged down in the minute details of experimental procedures.
- An instructor web site provides a forum where instructors can communicate directly with the text author about specific experiments and the implementation of microscale techniques. The site also includes PDF files from the Instructor's Resource Manual.
- Material on mass spectroscopy has been added to Chapter 14.

Questionable Textbook.......2006-11-03
I bought this item from A1Books. I searched around for the "Experiments in Physical Chemistry" book by Shoemaker/Garland/Nibler that I needed for my chemistry class at college that started October 24th. I ordered it on the 24th, because it said it would be mailed within 2 days. It wasn't mailed until the monday after I ordered it (6 days), but I recieved it that Thursday (9 days after I ordered). I was a little bit dissappointed by the slow transaction.
My main complaint is that instead of recieving what I was looking for, which was the 7th edition "Experiments in Physical Chemistry," I recieved "Customized Experiments in Physical Chemistry, 6th edition: For Rutgers State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick Campus." As I do not attend this school, and NOWHERE ON ANYTHING DID IT EVER SAY that it was 6th edition, or customized, or for any school. There were about 4 items in amazon with the same label, so I went with the cheapest one. They were all described EXACTLY THE SAME (word for word copy/paste), and I recieved a book that is different from the rest of the books that amazon was selling with the same name/description. Be wary of A1books, because there is no way to return books for a refund (all sales are final), and they don't seem interested in hearing from you (they send spam to the e-mail you give them, and say that replies to the sender will not go through).

A good PChem Lab Text.......2005-05-19
I felt the book did a great job explaining the labs from the perspective of the applications to the PChem theory learned in other classes.
This book lacks good explanations of theory, so hold onto your pchem text if you need this book for a class!!!
S-G-N...AN INSTRUCTOR'S PERSPECTIVE.......2001-12-06
(...)IN ORDER FOR MY CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERS TO MAKE USE OF THIS TEXT SOME BASIC PRINCIPLES NEED TO BE REVIEWED (OR IF THE STUDENT HASN'T HAD P-CHEM LECTURE THEY WILL ALSO NEED A GOOD LECTURE TEXT).
AS AN EXAMPLE LET'S TAKE SPECTROSCOPY AS A TOPIC...STUDENTS COME INTO MY COURSE LARGELY QUITE CONFUSED ABOUT HOW ALL THE PARTS IN THIS BROAD, BUT VITAL AREA FIT TOGETHER. OUR STUDENTS TAKE THIS COURSE AS JUNIORS AND LESS OFTEN AS SENIORS (ENGINEEERS ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE SENIORS) AND MOST WILL NOT HAVE HAD DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS.
WHAT S-G-N REALLY LACKS ARE SIMPLE CLEAR EXPLANATIONS OF BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SPECTROSCOPY (OR KINETICS ETC.)INCLUDED IN THE TEXT. NOT ALL THE DETAILS, BUT THE BIG PICTURE E.G. RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY... THIS IS THE FIRST MULTI-PHOTON EXPERIMENT MOST UNDERGRADS HAVE HAD AND, SADLY, THE LECTURE TEXTS OFTEN DO A POOR JOB (HERE I AM NOT COUNTING THE NUMEROUS CONCEPTUAL ERRORS THAT HAVE CREPT INTO SOME OF OUR LARGEST SELLING TEXTS) GIVING A SIMPLE EXPLANATION. TWO PHOTONS STRIKE A MOLECULE (SAY THEY ARE GREEN) AND A BLUE ONE AND A YELLOW ONE ARE EMITTED IN SUCH A WAY THAT ENERGY IS CONSERVED. IF POSSIBLE EACH EXPERIMENT NEED THIS.
P-CHEM LAB TEXTS GENERALLY DON'T GIVE A SIMPLE PICTURE OF THE CONCEPT (WHAT IT IS AND WHY ARE WE DOING THIS EXPERIMENT, HOW ARE WE GOING TO DO IT) IN SIMPLE BROAD TERMS FIRST BEFORE WE GET TO THE DETAILS. S-G-N, AS WELL AS OTHER P-CHEM LAB TEXTS NEED THAT.
YES, THERE ARE REFERENCES, BUT IT IS WISHFUL THINKING THAT STUDENTS WILL GO TO THEM WITH THE FOUR OTHER ADVANCED UNDERGRAD COURSES THAT THEY ARE TAKING. IT STILL IS THE BEST AROUND, BUT AS AN UNDERGRAD REVIEW NOTED HANDOUTS ARE OFTEN CRITICAL BECAUSE OF THESE KINDS OF PROBLEMS. I LECTURE FOR HALF THE SEMESTER TO OVERCOME THESE AND OTHE PROBLEMS; SHOULD THAT HAVE TO HAPPEN?
Comprehensive P-Chem Lab Text.......2000-09-05
One of the most comprehensive physical chemistry lab text, SGN discusses about calculations and presentation of data, uncertainties in data and results, background and theory for each experiment. Experimentals are extremely clear and detailed, though individual instructors might develop modifications. The uncertainties section might be supplemented by John Taylor's "Introduction to Error Analysis" for more in-depth reference.
Experiments are groups into topics like Gases, Transport Properties of Gases, Solutions, Electrochemistry, Kinetics, and Spectroscopy, etc. The text also devotes incredible amount of pages on electronic devices, vacuum techniques, instruments and lab procedures for reference. Many lab texts are published, yet SGN might be the best for students.
OSU Integrated Lab Students, Hear Ye!.......2000-06-17
Students were asked to purchase this textbook, and most students in the class agreed that it was more or less a waste. In six terms of lab, we did no more than three experiments out of the thirty or so in the book. The discussion is often at such
a high level that the 'trees in the forest' are hidden
by the surrounding fog. If you're taking the 300 or 400-series
lab courses at OSU, just stick with what's in the
handouts...that's what I did, and I got A's on about 90%
of the reports. Even if the profs tell you to read S-G-N,
don't waste too much time on it. As a research or reference book, S-G-N is fine and probably very useful (today I'm
an industry chemist, not a researcher). But if you're
an undergrad student taking labs at OSU or any school,
put S-G-N back on the shelf for a rainy day or
return it and get a refund.

Dealing with the Unknowns? Then, this is the book for you........2004-06-28
Invariably, the final semister/quarter of General Chemistry involves determining the ions contained in an unknown solution. This can be a frustrating time for a student, which is in many instances due to the lack of clearly written and understandable laboratory procedures. When I took the class, I thankfully had a savvy professor who utilized this book (the Sixth edition) as the sole laboratory procedures. As a consequence, I did well in the lab (grade was an A) and had a positive experience.
As a teaching assistant in graduate school, I recalled how useful this book was and developed my lectures based on its content (the Chemistry department at that university utilized its own "home grown" book of procedures which were sadly lacking in clarity). This book contains much of the necessary background in reaction kinetics, solution phenomenon, and ionic properties for each group that a student needs to perform and understand the experiments. Two of the most important and indispensable aspects of this book are the flow charts and the questions in each chapter. The flow charts provide a clear, overall picture of the procedures and are easy to follow. I implemented flow charts similar to these in my class with much success. Many of my students copied those flow charts and gave them to classmates in other laboratory sections. The questions were VERY helpful in clarifying how separations of the ions could be successfully achieved and the importance of reaction conditions during these separations. The questions, or variations of them, also made good lab quiz questions. (Hint, hint.) I highly recommend answering the questions prior to performing the lab to give yourself a better idea of what to expect when following the procedures. With this book and good laboratory techniques, you should have no problem acing the Unknowns.
