Like any other text. To pricy if you ask me.

5 out of 5 stars Best beginners book in market!!.......2003-11-07

Sperling's book stands out as the most useful polymer science text, compiling essential elements of varied physical properties and behaviour. The third edition has up to date material on all aspects of polymer physics including chapters on polymer surfaces and interfaces as well as on multicomponent polymer systems and liquid crystalline polymers. In my opinion, as a beginners guide, the book is definitely outscores over all other texts in market including Billmeyer, Painter Coleman, Rodriquez, etc. The book also contains a good description of various polymer characterization techniques.

The material covered is adequate to provide basic information about each field in polymer physics, and the textbook has enough material to be useful for two or three courses. The author presents a lot of tables in the book, that succintly summarize important points related to that topic. Coupled with Strobl's book, which has slightly advanced description of polymer physics, and Doi's Introduction to polymer physics, which has mathematically intensive description of statistical mechanics of polymers, you have three texts to teach you essentially everything there is to know in Polymer Physics!! (Perhaps you can add a text for Polymer Rheology, say by Larson!)

Book Description

Now updated to incorporate recent developments in the field, the third edition of this successful text offers an excellent introduction to polymer chemistry. Ideal for graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and industrial chemists who work with polymers, it is the only current polymer textbook that discusses polymer types according to functional groups. It provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the chemistry of macromolecular substances, with particular emphasis on polymers that are important commercially and the properties that make them important. Major topics include polymer synthesis and nomenclature; molecular weight and molecular weight distribution; reactions of polymers; recycling of polymers; methods used for characterizing and testing polymers; morphology; stereoregular polymers; polymer blends; step-growth, chain-growth, and ring-opening polymerization; commercially important addition and condensation polymers; and heterocyclic, inorganic, and natural polymers. Review exercises, many including journal references, are provided to help lead students into the polymer literature. Polymer Chemistry, 3/e, offers the most up-to-date treatment available of new developments in this rapidly changing field. It covers dendritic and hyperbranched polymers, olefin polymerization using metallocene catalysts, living free radical polymerization, biodegradable bacterial polyesters, mass spectrometric methods for determining molecular weights of polymers, atomic force microscopy for characterizing polymer surfaces, and polymers exhibiting nonlinear optical properties.

4 out of 5 stars Good Textbook.......2007-09-29

This is a good Polymer Chemistry Textbook. It is very informative. However, it isn't the most exciting read. The book is completely black and white, making it hard to read for extended periods of time. I would recommend this textbook for the quality of it's information.

5 out of 5 stars some other introductory books.......2007-04-18

Just wanted to mention two other introductory polymer books:

Polymers (Oxford Chemistry Primers) by David J. Walton & J. Phillip Lorimer. This book is just a brief intro to the field. Wouldn't use it for a full semester course.

The Chemistry of Polymers by J.W. Nicholson, 2nd edition, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, ISBN 0854045589. This one IS suitable for a 1 semester course.

Both are very good.

Check out my other reviews for other chemistry books.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to polymer chem..........2002-10-28

I was not able to fit polymer chem into my schedule at University, so I bought this book after graduating. This book is extremely organized and provides a lot of examples. The first of three sections provides a great introduction with the focus on definitions and structure. This is accomplished with very little reference to reactions.
The next two sections, which are titled vinyl and nonvinyl polymers respectively, address reaction mechanisms and kinetics. This layout allowed for smooth transitions between sections and concepts were introduced and reinforced smoothly.
The other thing I liked about it, is the continuous reinforcement of nomenclature...every time a name was used a corresponding structure was on that same page.

5 out of 5 stars Premier Polymer Chemistry Text.......2002-07-12

This textbook does an excellent job of going over the basics of polmer chemistry. There are insightful questions at the end of chapters that make students think and the book goes over the material in such a way that a background in organic chemistry is not necessary. If you need to learn about polymer chemistry on your own, this book is an excellent purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Polymer Chemistry-An Excellent Introduction.......2001-04-22

"Polymer Chemistry: An Introduction" is an excellent text for an upper division undergraduate or graduate level course in polymer chemistry. The book is also enjoyable to read for scientists and engineers in the polymer and materials fields. The content is logically organized, there is fairly in-depth discussion of mechanisms of polymerization reactions and of the origins of stereoregularity in polymers, and the problems at the end of each chapter are more than adequate for reviewing the subject matter. Professor Stevens clearly introduces the reader to the subject of polymer chemistry, relating the physical properties of macromolecular materials to polymer orientation, microstructure, stereochemistry and chemical composition. He also provides an enormous amount of information on the history of polymers in a fashion that effectively reinforces the important concepts being described. I find myself referring to this text far more frequently than the other polymer texts on my bookshelves.

Book Description

Introduction to Polymers, Second Edition discusses the synthesis, characterization, structure, and mechanical properties of polymers in a single text, giving approximately equal emphasis to each of these major topics. It has thus been possible to show the interrelationship of the different aspects of the subject in a coherent framework. The book has been written to be self-contained, with most equations fully derived and critically discussed. It is supported by a large number of diagrams and micrographs and is fully referenced for more advanced reading. Problems have been supplied at the end of each chapter so that students can test their understanding and practice the manipulation of data.

An excellent and a must read for anyone with an interest in polymeric materials. It easily is the best introductory book on the subject and I'd recommend it to all students - believe it - i've been taught by the authors! I only wish they'd also write on more specialized topics in Polymer Science.

5 out of 5 stars THE introductory text for polymers.......2000-09-24

This is a lovely introductory text for polymer science, hitting on all the major concepts of characterization, structure, mechanical properties, and synthesis. Topics are covered very concisely, but with sufficient detail to be useful in several different graduate level courses on polymers. Great background for understanding Flory-Huggins theory, chain dimensions. And an excellent price as well! Just my opinions as a grad student in some polymers courses...

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Basic Mechanical properties.......2000-03-31

This is an interesting introducing to basic properties on polymers. Specialy chapter five, wich talks about mechanical properties. I would recommend this book as a guide text for an introductory course to polymers, specily on mechanical properties. The mathematical treatment is just enough, without unnecesary ecuations but clear and simple.

Book Description

Although dynamical mechanical analysis or spectroscopy has left the domain of the rheologist and has become a prevalent tool in the analytical laboratory, it is still common to hear, "What is DMA, and what will it tell me?" or "I think I could use a DMA, but I cannot justify its cost." Previously, the novice in the field had to sort through texts on thermal analysis, rheology, and materials science just to find basic information - until now. This book provides the chemist, chemical engineer, or materials scientist with a starting point to understand the applications of dynamic mechanical analysis, its workings, and its advantages and limitations. Discussions include: · rheological concepts · stress-strain · data handling · experimental techniques and considerations · test methods, such as frequency sweeps and time-temperature curves · data analysis

Customer Reviews:

The DMA technique may be helpful on several materials dynamic-mechanical characterization and this book introduces the why and how to.

Good investment to my thesis!

5 out of 5 stars What I needed, when I needed it.......2001-09-27

I needed to get up to speed on DMA fast and I got what I needed. It didn't provide all the info I required for my specific application (submicron thin films) but it did provide a sound foundation for further investigation. This is truly what it claims to be, a practical introduction, many thanks to the author.

Let's face it, there are not many current Thermal Analysis textbooks for sale. The books I've seen are too scrambled with no understanding at the end. This book was VERY informative, and it answered my questions. Special Thanks to the author. Please write many more books with the same intentions in mind: "We would like to understand and learn from what we read"! Thank You!

I ordered this book based on the other review here onamazon.com and was looking for a bit more. A fair bit of the contentis already covered by free application notes on the web and sales literature that the makers of DMA instrumentation pass out for free. If your looking for a solid treatment of the polymer physics of DMA testing, that's not this book; maybe it hasn't been written yet. If you just want to relate DMA testing to real world environments and effects, then there aren't enough good examples in the book or a method to make this book worth the price.

This would make an acceptable guide for a technician who was just introduced to a DMA - I was looking for more.

The research and development of nanofibers has gained much prominence in recent years due to the heightened awareness of its potential applications in the medical, engineering and defense fields. Among the most successful methods for producing nanofibers is the electrospinning process. In this timely book, the areas of electrospinning and nanofibers are covered for the first time in a single volume. The book can be broadly divided into two parts: the first comprises descriptions of the electrospinning process and modeling to obtain nanofibers while the second describes the characteristics and applications of nanofibers. The material is aimed at both newcomers and experienced researchers in the area.

3 out of 5 stars Neutral about it ............2007-08-30

There are only a few books that discuss these topics and only in one or two chapters. This book brings a fair review of the theory of electrospinning and some of the current state of the technology in one reference. I felt like the work of some research groups was not discussed or even mentioned. A problem that many of these books have and make you question its "sientific neutrality or objectivity (sorry if I mispelled)." Good for a first read into the topic and as a starting point for a literature review.

Now some comments not related to the content. Even someone whose first language is not english (like me), can not ignore the large ammount of typos and grammatical errors. I could not control myself and ended up reading and correcting the errors with a red pen. Some people may be put-off by this. I got the paperback edition which has a fair price (compared to other books that you may pay more and get the same quality). The hardback is not worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Review of An Introduction to the Mechanical Properties of Solid Polymers.......2007-01-05

It wasn't great, but it was a required book for the class I took, so I suppose it was everything I needed. That's about all I can say. I actually barely read anything in the class.

4 out of 5 stars A reader.......2000-03-27

This book is a good introduction to understanding the mechanical properties of solid polymers from both a theoretical and practical viewpoint. It is suitable for university students with some knowledge of the physical properties of polymers but advanced enough to be used in a graduate course. This is book is a much more manageable version of a previous book by I.M. Ward, "Mechanical Properties of Solid Polymers". It has been useful as basic reference and provides further references should more details be desired. Highly recommended addition to any persons collection of polymer science and engineering books. The only drawback is the cost. It is a bit disappointing to see the price almost double in less than 3 years.

    Book Description

    How to predict thermoplastics behavior in high-performance structural applications Here's the very first engineering resource with all the data and design/analysis techniques you need to work with even the newest thermoplastics. Structural Analysis of Thermoplastic Components by Gerry Trantina and Ron Nimmer shows you how to predict stiffness, creep and fatigue of polymeric components--PLUS non-homogeneous materials such as structural foams and composites. You'll benefit from detailed comparisons of analytic prediction versus measured behavior and much more: Nonstandard property measurement and analysis; Nonlinearities associated with large deformations; Using structural geometry to offset low material stiffness; Designing thermoplastics to withstand impacts; Important loading variables, component lifetimes, frequency effects, hysteric heating and cyclic crack growth.

      Book Description

      A revised molecular approach to a classic on viscoelastic behavior

      Because viscoelasticity affects the properties, appearance, processing, and performance of polymers such as rubber, plastic, and adhesives, a proper utilization of such polymers requires a clear understanding of viscoelastic behavior.

      Now in its third edition, Introduction to Polymer Viscoelasticity remains a classic in the literature of molecular viscoelasticity, bridging the gap between primers on polymer science and advanced research-level monographs. Assuming a molecular, rather than a mechanical approach, the text provides a strong grounding in the fundamental concepts, detailed derivations, and particular attention to assumptions, simplifications, and limitations.

      This Third Edition has been entirely revised and updated to reflect recent developments in the field. New chapters include:
      * Phenomenological Treatment of Viscoelasticity
      * Viscoelastic Models
      * Time-Temperature Correspondence
      * Transitions and Relaxation in Polymers
      * Elasticity of Rubbery Networks
      * Dielectric and NMR Methods

      With detailed explanations, corresponding equations, and experimental methods, supported by real-life applications (as well as the inclusion of a CD-ROM with data to support the exercises), this Third Edition provides today's students and professionals with the tools they need to create polymers with more desirable qualities than ever.
