    Book Description

The preservation of the environment is of increasing concern at all scales, from individual countries through continents to the entire planet. Combustion is known to contribute substantially to damage to the atmosphere and therefore this book reviews current knowledge of the mechanisms by which the main pollutants are formed in combustion systems. In most situations, pollutants are present as trace components and their formation and removal is strongly conditioned by the chemical reactions initiated by fuel consumption. Specific papers therefore define precisely the general properties of combustion chemistry for gaseous, liquid and solid fuels. A substantial part of the work also concerns the impact on atmospheric chemistry of the main combustion pollutants: NOx, aromatics, soot, VOCs, sulfur and chlorinated compounds. It is this combination of combustion and atmospheric chemistry that gives the book its unique character.

    Book Description

This book supersedes Gardiner's 1984 "Combustion Chemistry." It is an updated, comprehensive coverage of the aspects of combustion chemistry that are relevant to gas-phase combustion of hydrocarbons. It includes an extended discussion of air pollutant chemistry and aspects of combustion. The book newly reviews elementary reactions of nitrogen, sulfur and chlorine compounds that are relevant to combustion. Methods of combustion modeling and rate coefficient estimation which have been established during the recent years are presented, as well as access to databases for combustion thermochemistry and modeling.

5 out of 5 stars A good guide both for beginners and experts.......2000-11-24

When I saw the book for the first time I did not expect that it would turn out to be one of the best publications in chemical kinetics I had ever seen. I read it all and now I am treating it as some kind of a guide. If I need any information to any particular chemical reaction for my reasearch, I just open it and find: for example the coeeficient of the elementary reaction. Even if you are new in this field, having read the book you will become an expert.

    Book Description

This long awaited and thoroughly updated version of the classic text (Plenum Press, 1970) explains the subject of electrochemistry in clear, straightforward language for undergraduates and mature scientists who want to understand solutions. Like its predecessor, the new text presents the electrochemistry of solutions at the molecular level. The Second Edition takes full advantage of the advances in microscopy, computing power, and industrial applications in the quarter century since the publication of the First Edition. Such new techniques include scanning-tunneling microscopy, which enables us to see atoms on electrodes; and new computers capable of molecular dynamics calculations that are used in arriving at experimental values.
Chapter 10 starts with a detailed description of what happens when light strikes semi-conductor electrodes and splits water, thus providing in hydrogen a clean fuel. There have of course been revolutionary advances here since the First Edition was written. The book also discusses electrochemical methods that may provide the most economical path to many new syntheses - for example, the synthesis of the textile, nylon. The broad area of the breakdown of material in moist air, and its electrochemistry is taken up in the substantial Chapter 12. Another exciting topic covered is the evolution of energy conversion and storage which lie at the cutting edge of clean automobile development. Chapter 14 presents from a fresh perspective a discussion of electrochemical mechanisms in Biology, and Chapter 15 shows how new electrochemical approaches may potentially alleviate many environmental problems.

4 out of 5 stars A good treatment for those new to electrochemistry.......2005-09-15

The authors do a good job introducing the concepts of electrochemistry in a fairly readable and thorough manner. The individual chapters can be read more or less independently with minimal flipping back to earlier material for reference. The subject mater is handled at a level appropriate for an intermediate level student or for one not exceedingly familiar with electrochemistry. Exercises and problems are infrequent so this may not be a good stand alone text for an upper division class although I found the emphasis on conceptual understanding very valuable. In all a very good text.

5 out of 5 stars Great Electrochemistry Series!.......2005-03-28

These authors have a great writing style. This is a subject matter that has a potential to be very, very dry but the authors have somehow made it enjoyable. If they get into hardcore calculations and derivations that you might be a little rusty on, they anticipate that (I assume from lots of students' feedback) and include appendixes at the end of each chapter so that you don't need to run off and find the corresponding chapter in one of your math/physics/chemistry textbooks. They also have a very useful nomenclature guide (in the first book only) in case you keep forgetting what certain symbols mean and what units they are in. The footnotes are great and keep things from getting too dry. Overall, I would definitely recommend these three books.

Note: Unless you have a fetish for hard covers, get the paperbacks; they're half the cost. When I bought these books from amazon.com, it was very confusing to figure out which books to get. Here are the ISBN's of each of the three books in the series. This will save you some headache:

      Book Description

It is well known that corrosion products, i.e. rust, on iron and steel surfaces cannot be assigned a typical crystallographic structure with long-range order. In fact, the structure of rust is considered to be very complicated, and some forms of rust are assigned to the amorphous state for this reason. Accurate information about the atomic-scale structure of rust is important to shed light on corrosion mechanisms of metallic materials. And, since life of steel structures is often dominated by environmental degradation or corrosion of the surface, the structure of the rust formed on iron and steel surfaces during prolonged exposure to air is of great interest. This book describes the fundamental aspects of materials characterization for the ferric oxyhydroxides formed on steel surfaces. Selected examples, from both the basic science and the applied engineering points of view, are presented. Of special interest is the new structural information on ferric oxyhydroxides containing a small amount of alloying elements. The text relates this to their various states and their role in corrosion processes. This monograph will serve as a valuable guide and source of information for specialists and non-specialists alike.

              Book Description

Nowadays, there are increasing demands for the control and specification of all aspects of industrial manufacturing. There is also a growing need to understand various biological processes and conditions for agricultural production, and concern for protection of the environment and human health. These factors have made it imperative to develop adequate methods for the analysis of gaseous substances or substances that can be converted to the gaseous state. It is not only necessary to apply known and developed methods correctly, but novel analytical procedures must also be found. Instrumentation should be improved and the applications of these methods will have to be extended.

The present volume provides a comprehensive description of the state-of-the-art and of future possibilities in the analysis of gaseous substances. In the individual chapters the following themes have been discussed; the theoretical basis for the methods, a description of the instrumentation and the steps necessary in actual analyses and an outline of the principal areas in which each method can be employed. Both classical methods that are still useful for the solution of analytical problems using simple instrumentation, and the newest methods in the field are described. Special attention is paid to modern electrochemical and spectroscopic methods, and to methods based on a number of physical principles. Gas chromatography is discussed in the greatest detail because of its specially important position in modern analytical chemistry.

The book should be well received by the analytical public and should be extremely useful to students and workers in scientific research laboratories and in fields dealing with environmental protection.
