Book Description
Presents aquatic chemistry in a way that is truly useful to those with diverse backgrounds in the sciences. Major improvements to this edition include a complete rewrite of the first three background chapters making them user-friendly. There is less emphasis on mathematics and concepts are illustrated with actual examples to facilitate understanding.

Aquatic Chemistry text for introductory course.......2002-04-20
I used this text for a one-quarter introductory Aquatic Chemistry course. The tableau method to solve equilibrium problems was positively received only by about half the students. Other texts used for this course are Pankow and Stumm and Morgan. (None of them were free of difficulties. Stumm and Morgan still serves as the best reference; but readability is a problem for an introductory course.) Morel does a good job in the treatment of metal ion kinetics.
The worst book ever.......2000-09-24
There aren't many good things to say about this book (except that I got rid of it). You have to read it with the authors around you to get a clue what they're talking about.
Book Description
Designed to show readers how to use chemical principles in solving geological problems, this book emphasizes a quantitative approach to problem solving and demonstrates how chemical principles control geologic processes in atomic and large-scale environments. The book starts with basic principles and emphasizes quantitative methods of problem-solving. It uses the principles of isotope geology to enhance the understanding of appropriate geochemical subject areas. The book also examines the geochemical processes that affect the chemical composition of surface water and that determine its quality for human consumption. For anyone interested in Geochemistry or Geology.

Facilitates learning.......2005-02-04
Faure wrote a book with all the technicalities of geochemistry in an easy-to-follow manner. Very good balance of principles and forumlae relative to other Geochemistry books I have used. I borrowed 3 Geochem books from the library (including Faure) for a coarse I am taking and 95% of the time, I find myself using Faure.
Faures principles and apps of geochem.......2000-09-20
This is an excellent text for geology / earth science undergraduates and graduates covering pretty much all the fundamental geochemistry topics. It is generally very readable with material presented in a logical and coherent fashion. The sections regarding geochemical thermodynamics and the construction of Eh / pH diagrams are especially well presented. An excellent reference text and a must have for those interested in a broad range of geochemical areas.

Book Description
This is the first dedicated book to cover the basics of a wide range of stable isotope applications in a manner appropriate for someone entering the field. At the same time, it offers sufficient detail – and numerous references and examples – to direct research for further inquiry.
Discusses diverse topics such as hydrology, carbon in plants, meteorites, carbonates, metamorphic rocks, etc. Explores the theory and principles of isotope fractionation. Offers unique, up-to-date discussion of meteorite (extraterrestrial) isotope data. Presents the subject in an interesting historical context, with the classic papers noted.
A useful reference for students taking the course and professionals entering the field of Geochemistry.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2007-05-13
This is an excellent resource for the use and analysis of stable isotopes and their applications in isogeochemistry. Not only could this book be an excellent textbook for graduate studies, but a reference that would be utilized time and time again.
A great addition to the field.......2006-07-28
This book is sensational. It is well researched, and well written--two things that one does not always find in a science textbook. Dr. Sharp has also spent the time to index the book so that it more user friendly. I predict this book will be around for a long time. It's much more current, and useful than the other books out there on Stable Isotopes.
Book Description
The basic philosophy of PRINCIPLES OF ENVIRONMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY is to present chemical principles that are essential for understanding environmental problems and then show how these principles can be applied to real-world problems. The latter goal is achieved by including a number of case studies in each chapter. The book is process oriented, emphasizing the tools needed to understand environmental problems, and is not a recitation of environmental problems and issues. Chemistry topics are developed from first principles and the focus is on those principles that are most useful in the environmental field. This text is more accessible than the larger, higher-level environmental geochemistry books on the market that assume familiarity with chemical and quantitative background material. The topical coverage is broad, including extensive material on the isotopic and mineralogical aspects of environmental issues and a significant chapter on the atmosphere. Case studies are integrated throughout to show the application of the various principles to real-world problems, and many of the very extensive set of end-of-chapter problems encourage students to become familiar with the scientific literature on this subject.

Isotopes: Principles and Applications
ASIN: 0471864129 |
Book Description
This wide-ranging text in isotope geology/geoscience allows students to integrate material taught in various courses into a unified picture of the earth sciences. Gives a rational exposition of the principles used in the interpretation of isotopic data and shows how such interpretations apply to the solution of geological problems. Current with references up to 1985, chapters in this edition have been revised, and new chapters on Sm-Nd, Lu-Hf, Re-Os, and K-Ca decay schemes and cosmogenic radionuclides have been added. Data summaries and references have been expanded. Also includes problems for student study and abundant line drawings with explanatory captions.
Customer Reviews:
Great book. Highly recommended.......2004-12-12
This is a great book. I had never taken geochemistry until I used this book for a class on radiogenic isotopes and geochronology. Even though I was a "geochem novice," I found the text easy to read and there were enough examples to help me understand each topic fully.
The book is also a very complete and easy to use reference.
I highly recommend this book for anyone as both a text book and as a reference.
Information that works.......2001-02-04
A great book for anyone needing information on isotopes. Well written, with enough stories of isotopes in everyday life to make the book interesting. As a textbook, it is helpful. As a reference book, it is easy to find what you are looking for. I used this book as a student in two isotope classes, and I am going to hold onto it for the rest of my career.

Book Description
Our landscape is constantly changing, but before the dramatic effects of erosion and mass movement take place, more subtle forces work on the rocks, minerals and soils around us. Weathering is the initial process which exposes the top few layers of the Earth to the potential for change. This book provides an introduction to the scientific principles behind mechanical, chemical and biological weathering. Starting with a consideration of the chemical and physical properties of rocks and water, the authors proceed to an accessible explanation of the weathering processes themselves, concluding with a review of weathering rates and intensities, and a survey of the effects of weathering on the landscape. Assuming little background knowledge, the authors develop ideas from first principles to provide a straightforward introduction to weathering for students of geography, geology and earth and environmental science.

Book Description
This book presents a quantitative treatment of the theory and natural variations of light stable isotopes. It discusses isotope distribution in the context of fractionation processes, thermodynamics, mass conservation, exchange kinetics, and diffusion theory, and includes more than 100 original equations. The theoretical principles are illustrated with natural examples that emphasize oxygen and hydrogen isotope variations in natural waters, terrestrial and extraterrestrial rocks, and hydrothermal systems. New data on meteoric precipitation, rivers, springs, formation fluids, and hydrothermal systems are included in relation to various natural phenomena. Essentially, this book seeks to reconnect the diverse phenomenological observations of isotope distribution to the quantitative theories of physical chemistry and the language of differential equations. It may serve as a textbook for advanced students, as a research reference, or as a quick source of information. The book is organized into five chapters, each followed by suggested quantitative problems and a short reference list. The three theoretical chapters progress from an elementary review of the physical chemistry of stable isotopes, to the thermodynamics of isotopic compounds, and finally to the calculation of isotope distribution in dynamic systems. The third and fifth chapters emphasize oxygen and hydrogen isotope variations in Earth's hydrosphere and lithosphere, constituting the most important examples of the theoretical principles. Appendices provide data on atomic weights of light elements, physical constants, mathematical relationships, and isotopic fractionation factors.
