The large chains of molecules known as polymers are currently used in everything from "wash and wear" clothing to rubber tires to protective enamels and paints. Yet the practical applications of polymers are only increasing; innovations in polymer chemistry constantly bring both improved and entirely new uses for polymers onto the technological playing field. Principles of Polymerization, Fourth Edition presents the classic text on polymer synthesis, fully updated to reflect today's state of the art. New and expanded coverage in the Fourth Edition includes:
* Metallocene and post-metallocene polymerization catalysts
* Living polymerizations (radical, cationic, anionic)
* Dendrimer, hyperbranched, brush, and other polymer architectures and assemblies
* Graft and block copolymers
* High-temperature polymers
* Inorganic and organometallic polymers
* Conducting polymers
* Ring-opening polymer ization
* In vivo and in vitro polymerization
Appropriate for both novice and advanced students as well as professionals, this comprehensive yet accessible resource enables the reader to achieve an advanced, up-to-date understanding of polymer synthesis. Different methods of polymerization, reaction parameters for synthesis, molecular weight, branching and crosslinking, and the chemical and physical structure of polymers all receive ample coverage. A thorough discussion at the elementary level prefaces each topic, with a more advanced treatment following. Yet the language throughout remains straightforward and geared towards the student.
Extensively updated, Principles of Polymerization, Fourth Edition provides an excellent textbook for today's students of polymer chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials science, as well as a current reference for the researcher or other practitioner working in these areas.

Customer Reviews:
Must read for polymer chemistry!.......2003-11-01
Odian offers a comprehensive guide to polymer chemistry, covering nearly all the types of polymerization, exploring radical, ionic, step, and copolymerization mechanisms and kinetics in sufficient detail. Some recent advances in polymer synthesis are not covered, but book offers enough knowledge to have a good grasp of all aspects of polymerizations. A must read for anyone considering a career or education in polymer synthesis!
Great text book!.......2001-11-04
I took a course last year in Polymer Chemistry and this text was the standard text book. It was an amazingly great reference book. This book mainly target on Polymerization synthesis and characterization. If you are interested in the mechanical properties of polymer, you should look for other one. But this is a must for all polymer chemists and material scientists who are interested in polymer processing.
A handy reference.......2000-12-16
I have been using this book for several years, including a term where it was the primary text for a graduate-level Introduction to Polymers course. As textbooks go, I have found this one relatively easy to read, and the concepts easy to follow. It it quite comprehensive, but assumes an undergraduate background in organic and physical chemistry. Since the course, it has been a handy reference in my research, though, as someone else noted, it is lacking in respect to living polymerizations, particularly Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization. However, Odian's work remains one of the most useful textbooks from my graduate classes.
The standard text for teaching polymer chemistry........1999-06-26
The number of concepts covered in this book is amazing -- I learn something new with each reading. The book is also great for pointing you to the leading references in the field; although it is lacking decent coverage of living polymerization. Odian's book is not easy to read. For a chemistry book it includes relatively few chemical structures or mechanisms, so for students who don't already know chemistry it is a rather useless introduction A better introductory polymer chemistry book is by M. Stevens.
Impressive, despite recent reviews to the contrary........1996-07-22
Encyclopedic and comprehensive, this
text ought to be the sole reference work for undergrads and
graduates in the field of polymer science.

Book Description
Synthetic materials are a tremendous potential resource for treating human disease. For the rational design of many of these biomaterials it is necessary to have an understanding of polymer chemistry and polymer physics. Equally important to those two fields is a quantitative understanding of the principles that govern rates of drug transport, reaction, and disappearance in physiological and pathological situations. This book is a synthesis of these principles, providing a working foundation for those in the field of drug delivery. It covers advanced drug delivery and contemporary biomaterials.
Book Description
Revised due to new developments in the polymer area. This book contains a broad, unified introduction to the subject matter that will be of immediate practical value plus a foundation for more advanced study. New features include a discussion of liquid-crystal polymers, the Flory-Huggins theory, group-transfer polymerization, a quantitative treatment of Ziegler-Natta polymerization with three new worked-out examples and much more. Also, end-of-chapter problems have been added along with practical illustrations of the material.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Starting Out.......2000-07-26
This is an excellent book for the novice--concepts are introduced at a leisurely pace and considerable time is taken to develop them. The tone is slightly casual, and the book as a whole is entirely unintimidating and accessible. Advanced concepts are absent (hence the "funadmental" in the title) so if you're looking to advance your knowledge to the next level, you'd be better off looking elsewhere. This is, however, one of the only textbooks I've owned that I've been able to read large portions of in a single sitting; I don't want to say it's like reading a novel, but it is as close as you're going to get with a textbook on rheology.

Book Description
Principles of Polymer Chemistry, Second Edition was written for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in polymer chemistry, along with practicing chemists who need a reference guide. Many important events have taken place since the
First Edition was published in 1995, and they are updated here. For example, sections have been included on controlled/living free radical polymerization, and sections on metathesis type polymerization and metallocene catalysts were expanded. The book was also expanded to include discussions of thermodynamics of elasticity, thermodynamics of polymeric solutions, and rheology and viscoelasticity. A chapter on degradation of polymers was also added.
Customer Reviews:
Buy this book only if you are forced to!.......1998-04-05
I bought this book because it was the prescribed text for a class I took. It doesn't tell you anything in detail other than what you already know and keeps reffering to journal papers for every little thing. The organization of material is haphazard, and its very dificult to read through the list of names that keep appearing. Anyone who wants to understand Polymer chemistry, please look for some other book.This looks like the work of someone who has obtained a long list of papers on polymers and has written whatever he could gather from a glance at them, and did not even bother to proofread it once.
Book Description
'Chemical Principles of Textile Conservation' provides must-have knowledge for conservators who do not always have a scientific background. This vital book brings together from many sources the material science necessary to understand the properties, deterioration and investigation of textile artefacts. It also aids understanding of the chemical processes during various treatments, such as: cleaning; humidification; drying; disinfestation; disinfection; and the use of adhesives and consolidants in conservation of historical textiles. Textile conservators will now have ready access to the necessary knowledge to understand the chemistry of the objects they are asked to treat and to make informed decisions about how to preserve textiles.
The combination of a chemist and a conservator provides the perfect authorial team. It ensures a unique dual function of the text which provides textile conservators with vital chemical knowledge and gives scientists an understanding of textile conservation necessary to direct their research.
The many practical examples and case studies illustrate the utility of the relatively large chemical introduction and the essential chemical information which is included. The case studies, many illustrated in colour, range from the treatment of the Ghandis' clothes, high-altitude flying suits and a Mary Quant raincoat, to the Hungarian Coronation Mantle.
*Comprehensive coverage of the subject by a chemist and a conservator
*Illustrated with many practical examples and case studies
*Provides textile conservators with necessary chemical knowledge
Customer Reviews:
A must read for the polymer technologist.......2006-01-15
This book is truly fantastic for people working on various aspects of polymers. Numbers of statements made by Flory in this book are still challenging. Remarkably good for those who want go for advance research in the filed of polymers/plastics. Not good for undergraduate students but should be used as a reference book in graduate degree. Person working on polymers knows nothing unless he/she read this book. Equations are tough and do not show from where they are originated, but fits well in real experiments with hardly exception at all.
A Classic!!.......2003-09-25
A comprehensive guide to Polymers by the Nobel winning Flory himself!!! The book came out over half a century back, and hence understandably contains a lot of material that has been revised and is now understood differently. Still the book continues to be an essential read for anyone interested in polymer science, and knowledge of how Flory developed and demonstrated several key ideas used in everyday polymer science. Not recommended as a textbook for beginners, but as reference book for anyone planning to delve deeper into the subject!
It Can Be Easily Shown? Duh!.......2000-04-05
I mean no disrespect for the FATHER OF POLYMER CHEMISTRY, but its really hard to follow this book especially the equations......they just come out of nowhere...
The bible from the father of polymer chemistry.......1997-08-05
This book wears its age well. Experimentalists are still trying to disprove many of his gedanken experiments-virtually all fail.
A great book to have in your library. If you are a Professor and want to give your students a challenge-have them solve an equation that Flory indicates "it can be easily shown..."

Book Description
The emphasis in degradable polymers has changed since the first edition of this book. Biomedical and agricultural applications remain important topics of scientific and commercial interest in the second edition. However, an increased emphasis on composting as a means of recovering value from wastes has led to a new impetus to understand how plastics degrade in the environment and the implication of this for international standards. Polymers based on renewable resources are also a major topic in this edition but the debate continues about their long-term sustainability and ecological advantages over degradable man-made polymers.
Degradable Polymers will be of interest not only to academic and industrial scientists working on packaging, agricultural and medical applications of plastics but also to students of environmental science and legislators concerned with the effects of man-made materials in the environment.
