Five Stars With no Doubt........2007-03-15
During my years as Structural Calculyst this book was always on my right side on my desk, and when I needed it, it was ready to help me find my way. One really very good Engineer has never found all formulas in his head, instead he should be able of finding them out on good references and really know how to use
them all. This is the best reference book you are going to find when formulas is your subject, just buy it!
The only book I know better than this one is written in German and few people are able to read in German, so!
very useful handbook.......2007-01-04
Very helpful book in engineering job, but unfortunately I've found some mistake (the reason for 4 stars).
In general you can find lot of formulas in this book. This book is also very well known and that's the reason for recommending it. You can just refer to Roark's formulas and everybody knows what's that.
Great Reference Tool.......2006-10-29
This Book contains every fromula that i would ever need during my Mechanical Engineering Course.
It is quite easy to use, and the print is clear the index is user friendly
Well Thought Out Upgrade from Previous Editions.......2006-04-18
I have three editions of this book: the classic 4th edition, the useless 5th edition and this, the 7th edition.
The 4th edition has simple format, is easy to use, but lacks methods for more sophisticated hand analyses and is sparse on explanations. The 5th is best used for a doorstop.
This edition is an excellent combination of the usefullness of the 4th edition with modern and more advanced methods.
The layout of each section has excellent explanatory material and provides the simple 4th edition type equations backed with more involved/advanced formulas which are very useful.
My hat is off to the authors. This is probably the best reference for those nasty stress and deflection hand calculations we all have to do from time to time.
Excellent resource.......2005-10-01
Roark's has been and remains an excellent resource for the structural engineer and designer regardless of the edition. This is a referance I use on a daily basis. Typically the first book I reach for.

An increase in the use of composite materials in areas of engineering has led to a greater demand for engineers versed in the design of structures made from such materials. Few existing books demonstrate advanced concepts or emphasize structures. This book addresses that need by offering students and engineers tools for designing practical composite structures. Among the topics of interest to the designer are stress-strain relationships for a wide range of anisotropic materials; bending, buckling, and vibration of plates; bending, torsion, buckling, and vibration of solid as well as thin walled beams; shells; hygrothermal stresses and strains; finite element formulation; and failure criteria. More than 300 illustrations, 50 fully worked problems, and material properties data sets are included. Some knowledge of composites, differential equations, and matrix algebra is helpful but not necessary, as the book is self-contained. Graduate students, researchers, and practitioners will value it for both theory and application.

Customer Reviews:
Falls short on design.......2007-09-19
This textbook is aimed at graduate students but it is not good for an undergraduate course such as senior technical elective because it is very light on design considerations and design examples. No software is provided so the students will have to spend lots of time programming. Appendix 5 "Computer Programs for Laminate Analysis" is worthless; a one-page table listing Matlab, Mathcad, Maple, and references to commercial finite element programs, none of which are used in the textbook. The 3rd Edition only adds a chapter on "plates and beams" and another on "emerging composite materials"; if you have the 2nd edition you don't need a new copy.
Excellent overview of composite material performance and anlysis.......2007-07-04
This book is written in a very systematic manner and covers a broad range of composite materials performance starting from basic mechanics. Some contents are quite unique and I never found other composite books. For example, failure modes of composite materials are well-described and almost all-inclusive. This book shoould be a must read for the begginers who want to learn the subject of composite materials in a short time. Someone who understands the basic of composite and wants to do deep-down research, chapter 3 and 4 would be a great review for them.
Overall, I would rate this book as an excellent overview of performance and mechanics of composite materials.
Book Description
This book balances introduction to the basic concepts of the mechanical behavior of composite materials and laminated composite structures. It covers topics from micromechanics and macromechanics to lamination theory and plate bending, buckling, and vibration, clarifying the physical significance of composite materials. In addition to the materials covered in the first edition, this book includes more theory-experiment comparisons and updated information on the design of composite materials.
Customer Reviews:
A good reference book .......2007-04-12
I am working as an stress engineer in space industry. This book covers many subjects in introduction level and it is holding the topics in basic philosophy. It does not include the latest research results. Because it is not written for this aim. It can be a fundamental teaching text book and a reference book for engineers. I would recommend it definetely for the newcomers to composite structures. For engineers besides this book Military handbook series can be also very useful. For more numerical design studies with applications book from Tsai "Theory of Composites Design" is also very helful.
Excellent Text.......2007-02-17
I own the original edition of this text. I borrowed a colleague's copy of the second edition to review before buying my own copy. It didn't take me long to decide that the new edition was an essential purchase. This is THE text to buy if you have an interest in composites.
Nice pictures, no value.......2007-02-11
I'm a final-semester senior at the University of Kentucky in Mechanical Engineering and I purchased this book as required reading for my composites class. Here's the thing: the book doesn't really say that much of anything. It spends all of its time stating equations for particular types of composites without specifying why it's doing it or how it got from equation to equation. As a matter of fact, all the chapter-end review questions seem to be are "hey, bet you can't figure out how we got from equation 4.56 to equation 4.57." It makes for somewhat easier homework because it's simple algebra and trig most of the time, but what am I learning, exactly? I usually try to justify books like this as saying, well, at least maybe I'll use it as a reference book in the future...but this book's just horrible. I would recommend you not buy this unless it's required of you for any particular class. Hope this helps.
Good reference book.......2002-12-03
I find this book to be a very handy reference. Sometimes the equations get very involved, but I do like the way the material is presented. The font is kinda wierd (newest edition), but thats just a subjective thing for me. I also like the design section in the back, and the depth of information on design considerations is neat. Including this book, Swanson's analysis book is another good addition for joggling your memory on composite analysis that you took in grad school. :)
Not half bad.......2001-02-27
When I took a composite materials course as a senior at NCSU, the teacher didn't. In a fit of desperation, I went to the bookstore and looked at all (3) composite books. This one used the same symbology as my prof's lecture notes, so I bought it, despite the price.
What a great investment! The first chapter gives an excellent overview of the "why?" of composites. Chapters 2-end give you everything you every needed to know about composite mechanics (at least at the senior undergraduate level.)
With this book, I learned the material and passed the course quite easily.
Complaint: Like most textbooks, it gives very little coverage of computer modelling. Some, but not as much as I would have liked. It helped me pass the concept parts of the course, but I had to sink-or-swim on my own when it came time to write code.
Other than that complaint, this is an excellent introductory book.
Book Description
Engineering Mechanics of Composite Materials, 2/e analyzes the behavior and properties of composite materials--rigid, high-strength, lightweight components that can be used in infrastructure, aircraft, automobiles, biomedical products, and a myriad of other goods. This edition features additional exercises and new material based on the author's research and advances in the field.
Customer Reviews:
Terrible.......2006-11-13
This book is not worth buying. If you buy it, get the next edition. It has more examples, less errors on important equations and procedures. Honestly I am considering trashing this and buying the next one because it is that much better.
Engineering Mechanics of Composite Materials.......2003-02-08
The book Engineering Mechanics of Composite Materials by Isaac M. Daniel and Ori Ishai is probably one of the best introduction books for composite analysis. I own several books in composites and so far this is the book I believe is most intuitive. I used this book as undergraduate and I continue to use it today. The book is easy to follow and for the most part provides with the formulation of most of the equations cover in the book. The only thing it lacks is a section in tensor analysis to help students understand stress and strain transformation via linear algebra. Over all I would recommend this text to anyone interested in learning the basics laminated composite analysis.
A great book to start the study on composites.......2002-10-16
This book is really friendly for a novice in composites. It contains a lot of theoretical and experimental data, solved problems and problems for the reader to solve and also lots of enlightening illustrations and figures. Chapters 7 and 8 nicely cover stress and failure analysis and characterization and testing subjects. Overall a very good book and up to date.
Good for eduction.......2000-06-07
I like this text book for my under graduate students it has a lot of materials informations.
Book Description
The first textbook on the design of FRP for structural engineering applications
Composites for Construction is a one-of-a-kind guide to understanding fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) and designing and retrofitting structures with FRP. Written and organized like traditional textbooks on steel, concrete, and wood design, it demystifies FRP composites and demonstrates how both new and retrofit construction projects can especially benefit from these materials, such as offshore and waterfront structures, bridges, parking garages, cooling towers, and industrial buildings.
The code-based design guidelines featured in this book allow for demonstrated applications to immediately be implemented in the real world. Covered codes and design guidelines include ACI 440, ASCE Structural Plastics Design Manual, EUROCOMP Design Code, AASHTO Specifications, and manufacturer-published design guides. Procedures are provided to the structural designer on how to use this combination of code-like documents to design with FRP profiles.
In four convenient sections, Composites for Construction covers:
* An introduction to FRP applications, products and properties, and to the methods of obtaining the characteristic properties of FRP materials for use in structural design
* The design of concrete structural members reinforced with FRP reinforcing bars
* Design of FRP strengthening systems such as strips, sheets, and fabrics for upgrading the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structural members
* The design of trusses and frames made entirely of FRP structural profiles produced by the pultrusion process
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for learning and designing!.......2007-10-03
This book is a great help if you are learning or designing with FRP composites. It's probably the best book I've bought in the subject. I strongly recommend it.
