A lot of information, but not-so-well explained..........2005-04-13
With an undergrad degree in chemistry and a year of graduate school (granted, without a focus solely in biochemistry), this text was often difficult for me to follow and gain much from. Though the text contained an impressive breadth of topics, this breadth came at the cost of depth. In my opinion, a textbook should more-or-less stand on its own in providing a clear understanding of a topic. All too often I didn't find this to be the case with the Fersht book. Instead, I often had to consult many of the references listed in the text to obtain sufficient understanding of topics. (Fortunately, the book includes extensive reference lists.) If looking up endless references (many old and sometimes difficult to obtain) is something you enjoy, this book is for you.--If not, forget it!
Highly recommend it.......2003-08-31
Hands down the bible of enzyme kinetics!
Anyone looking to learn more about enzyme kinetics, thermodynamics, structure, and function will find this book clear, thoughtfully written, and at the forefront in the field.
essential.......2002-05-01
If you are studying protein structure, you probably should read this book for reference.
This is solely my opinion, but I have learned new things and reinforced some old knowledge, as well. The book is well-written, and understandable, without being simplistic.
Some texts are difficult to understand, or dry, or facile. This is not one of those texts.
Biochemists Can't Miss.......2001-08-23
The book focuses on enzyme catalysis, stereochemistry of enzyme reactions, determination of rate constant, enzyme kinetics, and protein structure and folding. It would be an ideal reference for the study of protein chemistry. It can serve as the primary text for an advanced course in protein chemistry or a supplement for undergraduate biochemistry text.
Protein folding has remained one of the most intricate yet less understood process in modern biochemistry. Feersht's treatise of the subject in this book is splendid. The author overviews protein structure and diversity in the opening chapter. What I find really precious about this book is the discussion on protein engineering, forces on folding, and recombinant DNA technology in the context of protein folding.
Aside from protein chemistry, the chapter on chemical catalysis is excellent in learning more about transition state theory, general acid/base catalysis, covalent catalysis, structure-reactivity relationships, and kinetic isotope effects.
The Mother of All Enzyme Books.......2001-01-10
Man, this book rocked! I took one look at the ribbon structure of ATPase on the cover and said to myself, "Whoa dude! This is, like, phat!" Then I turned the pages and BAM! I was knee deep in protein structure! Like, any first-year biochemist knows its all about the acids, as in amino, and Fersht, he knows his peptides! Oh man, I was on cloud nine! And I've been off my meds for two months now! But you wanna know the real dope? You can't say diddly about function unless you know structure, and that Alan, as in Fersht, dude! Like, he starts you off simple, like, you know, with the "building blocks," like we're a bunch of two-year-olds, and you string 'em together and get all that higher-order structure and stuff, and slowly, ever so slowly, like a mental itch that invades your consciousness and becomes screaming voices telling you to AHHHHHHHHH! So many domains! Too many functional units! No, no, nooooooo! Schiff base? Shift Bass! Ah HA HA HA HA! What do all those K's mean!?! Take me home! Please...

Pleased.......2007-09-27
The book arrived on time and in the condition indicated. Pleasure to do business with.
eh.......2007-08-31
i always thought this book was overrated. it's just not a text you can sit down, relax, and enjoy. it's definitely a reference text, and for a reference text, it's definitely not the first one I go to.
6th March is an excellent buy.......2007-08-08
It is very difficult to rewrite reviews for 6th edition of the "March". Classical flagships among textbooks and reference books in organic chemistry, unbeatable. With 7000 new refernces it brings unbelievable 25k reference citations, very well organized on the bottom of the pages. Excellent indexes, very good cross view between 5th edition and 6th edition aligning chapters of different numbering, perfect drawings made in CamSoft ChemDraw, etc. etc. As the text and accompanying material is polished and polished edition to edition, it is very difficult to do anything else but to praise this excellent reference book, which hardly could be omitted in any chemical laboratory. Not only that but hardcover book of 2357 pages for $73 at Amazon is not only a good book but also a good buy.
very fast shipping and very good conditions of the book.......2007-05-13
very fast shipping and very good conditions of the book
Good oganic chemistry.......2007-03-22
As for the 5th edition this new one is really clear and fully of bibliografic reference. I really appreciate that, now, the references are below at the page and not at the end of the chapter, form me this change help to finding the information. I think that this is one of the most complete book for the organic chemist.

Customer Reviews:
Nice book, for sure.......2006-11-06
I'm pretty sure that you _must_ have this book if you are studying advanced organic chemistry. Maybe it's not the best one to use as a study guide, but it's extremely helpful as a reference book both for undergrads and graduate students. However, one can argue that this edition is a bit out-of-date.
The Best Reference for Organic Chemistry.......2005-10-09
This is by far the best text I have found. Although it is considered a text book, it is more handy as a reference tool. I have seen no other book that contains more information than March's. This book is actually worth the price.
An investment that'll last you for years........2004-09-04
I bought a copy of this text (2nd Ed) after finishing my sophomore year of college, and it proved to be the best single investment I've ever made in chemistry. I used it so often, I had to duct-tape the book together.
I think the happiest moment of my career was when my name appeared in the index of a later edition. Anyway, buy it and treasure it.
The Green Bible of Organic Chemistry.......2004-08-15
March never leaves my desk. It covers everything. From functional group transformations to mechanisms to FMO theory - you name it it's there. Highly recommended for any advanced undergraduate, graduate or post-doctoral researcher. It's a bookshelf staple that any organic chemist should have available.
1495 Page Bible Of General Reactions And Mechanisms.......2004-02-09
I paid more for my 4th ed. new, and find it to be worth even more. It is not a cookbook per se, but it is a very comprehensive textbook that details general reactions by functional group. It outlines every way known to remove, add to, or otherwise modify every functional group. There is as much commentary as is needed, if not more, and every pathway is mentioned regardless of how exotic or primitive and low-yielding. The corresponding OS synth refs for specific cpds. are given for each type of reaction, along with a total of 15,000 other refs in footnotes. This was cutting-edge in 92, with much updating of the 3rd ed. The index will take you to the section that shows how to make the manipulations you want - if it doesn't, it probably can't be done.
Book Description
Since its original appearance in 1977,
Advanced Organic Chemistry has found wide use as a text providing broad coverage of the structure, reactivity and synthesis of organic compounds. The Fourth Edition provides updated material but continues the essential elements of the previous edition. The material in Part A is organized on the basis of fundamental structural topics such as structure, stereochemistry, conformation and aromaticity and basic mechanistic types, including nucleophilic substitution, addition reactions, carbonyl chemistry, aromatic substitution and free radical reactions. The material in Part B is organized on the basis of reaction type with emphasis on reactions of importance in laboratory synthesis. As in the earlier editions, the text contains extensive references to both the primary and review literature and provides examples of data and reactions that illustrate and document the generalizations. While the text assumes completion of an introductory course in organic chemistry, it reviews the fundamental concepts for each topic that is discussed.
The Fourth Edition updates certain topics that have advanced rapidly in the decade since the Third Edition was published, including computational chemistry, structural manifestations of aromaticity, enantioselective reactions and lanthanide catalysis.
The two parts stand alone, although there is considerable cross-referencing. Part A emphasizes quantitative and qualitative description of structural effects on reactivity and mechanism. Part B emphasizes the most general and useful synthetic reactions. The focus is on the core of organic chemistry, but the information provided forms the foundation for future study and research in medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry, biological chemistry and physical properties of organic compounds.
The New Revised 5th Edition will be available shortly. For details, click on the link in the right-hand column.

Comments on Carey 2007.......2007-08-25
I have been using this book since the first edition, in my postgraduation courses and each time, it is better. The 5th edition introduced aspects that we awere longing for, like, for example, new achievements in the area of aromaticity and improvements in the first chapter. The best improvement was attached to problems solving (despite being not so friendly) and 3D figures. A CD should be added to the next edition.
Undergraduate text.......2006-10-30
This text is good for an advanced undergraduate course. It is a pretty good reference, with two major problems:
1) The book is a flimsy paperback. Other paperbacks I have can withstand usage just fine, but after 1 month the text was in two pieces. It feel apart at the binding. I never even brought it to class, it sat on the bookshelf and fell apart after twice a week readings.
2) The solutions are presented as references to journal articles. I am not too shy of searching for articles, but when you are in a crunch it would be nice to not have to search through 10 pages of tangential information to find the one data or conclusion you need in order to verify the accuracy of your work.
Besides for that, it worked just fine for my advanced undergrad course in physical organic chemistry. I did have to make frequent references to other sources for more in-depth information, but when study time came it worked better than the myriad organic texts available at my library.
save your money for Physical Organic Chemistry - by Dougherty & Anslyn .......2006-04-10
This book is written at the undergraduate level. The figures are a joke. It's a paperback and will fall apart. If you are in graduate school; buy the text by Anslyn & Dougherty instead. It is a nice hard bound book, durable & weighs a ton. Its worth the money and the weight in your backpack.
Horrible.......2005-09-16
It is now more than a month after I was supposed to receive this book and I have not gotten it yet, what the hell is going on.
Update of a Classic.......2003-11-12
This is an update on a classic text that has been used by many graduate and advanced undergraduate students. The core of the book is still an excellent survey of older literature and of enormous use to students. There are also many excellent problems. Unfortunately, there is not as much new material or references in some sections. I found I had to frequently supplement the text with current readings. The use of modern theory is especially lacking.

Book Description
This book provides an authoritative review of developments in the chemistry of Beta-lactams: in particular the synthesis, reactivity and mechanisms of reaction, including novel Beta-lactam structures and non-Beta-lactam analogues.
Book Description
Designed to help students not only understand what has been done in the past, but also be able to develop new concepts and to see new relationships in the future, Carroll's text emphasizes the nature and limitations of knowledge in chemistry, the need to question the underlying bases of familiar concepts, and the usefulness of exploring the role of complementary models in the understanding and practice of organic chemistry.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent intro to physical organic chemistry.......2003-12-29
Carroll's text does not attempt to teach organic chemistry per se. Rather, it tells the story of how many of our key ideas about organic chemistry have developed through the past 80 years. I certainly do not recommend it for introductory students, but it is an excellent read for anyone intending to pursue chemical research because it urges the reader to challenge yet not entirely disregard the simple, often incomplete ideas that are taught to introductory students.
an impetus of scientific temper.......2001-11-01
I read this text in my organic chemistry core course.I am certain that this is not one of the "run of the mill" texts in organic chemistry flooding market today.I must say it's really an advanced text that gives you less of statements and more of proposals. It stimulates reader's scientific temper and makes the reader challenge the simplistic and dogmatic perspectives prevailed in the contemporary organic chemistry. As mentioned by the author he could refrain himself from making it an encyclopedia of organic chemistry but he gives us the rationale behind the stabilities and reactivities of organic molecules by which one can enter into the "dreadful endless jungle"(in Friedrich Wohler's words,1835) with innumerous mind-boggling reactions with appreciable amount of confidence. It is not recommended for the beginner in the subject but is a real beacon for the graduate students in the feild.
I sent this back.......2000-06-10
because I had hoped for something to supplement the perspective from Lowry-Richardson's book. It is still a good book, though, especially for the undergraduate.
excellent adv organic text........1999-10-08
caroll's book is an excellent "advanced" organic textbook and reference. more of a teaching textbook than a strict reference guide, but all around great. it's without a doubt the best adv organic text i have come across (out of the 7 that i own and many others that i have glanced thru). highly recommended.

Book Description
Carbanions and other group 14 anions are fundamental reaction intermediates in organic chemistry and are central in mechanistic studies and in synthesis. This book describes their properties and structures, the conditions under which they form, and the factors that affect their thermodynamic and kinetic stability. Important chapters on the spectroscopy of these group 14 anions and on carbanion reactions catalyzed by heterogeneous solid basic catalysis are included.
Book Description
The control of reactivity to achieve specific syntheses is one of the overarching goals of organic chemistry. In the decade since the publication of the third edition, major advances have been made in the development of efficient new methods, particularly catalytic processes, and in means for control of reaction stereochemistry. This volume assumes a level of familiarity with structural and mechanistic concepts comparable to that in the companion volume, Part A, Structures and Mechanisms. Together, the two volumes are intended to provide the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student in chemistry with a sufficient foundation to comprehend and use the research literature in organic chemistry.
Customer Reviews:
good book with attactive price.......2007-09-27
This fourth edition has no big difference with the new fifth release. However, the price is only half. That is a good purchase for me.
good organic chemistry book.......2007-06-01
this is the textbook in chemistry dept. It is good but will be better if it have more content in organometal stuff.
Really good books.......2007-01-10
Both A and B part are very good reference book for organic chemistry graduate student. It is worth to have one if you want to open your career in organic chemistry
Strong Organic Text.......2006-05-20
I thought that the book was clear and interesting. It explained the reactions in sufficient detail for the first graduate level organic class I took.
My only complaint was that there was no answer guide. The answers are given as literature references, necessitating that you go look them up. When you are assigned 30 of his problems, that's not a trivial task, especially when some of the journals are esoteric. Also, finding the journal isn't enough, as often the journal citation has nothing to do with the problem. The "answer molecule" might just appear somewhere in that article.
And then, to add insult to injury, there are errors in the citations.
It's a great reference, but I wish that the problems in the book had more readily available answers.
My synthesis prof. slams this text on a regular basis!.......2006-04-10
I forgot to enter the number of stars field; Amazon automatically put 5, and I cannot edit this out. The text deserves 2 or 3 stars. This text was required for my graduate course in reactions at Florida State University. I went on to take my advanced synthesis course, which requires references for all synthetic transformations. Naturally, it seemed easy to reference the Carey and Sundberg text for the more basic steps. Even there, my professor took issue with many of the topics we covered in class with reference to this text. He said he was going to put this on his list of "texts not to buy..." I respect this professor highly, therefore I take it seriously that he disapproves ot it. I wish I would have just begun with a more up to date book without the errors or misrepresentations. On the plus side, this book is well organized and has a good index. However, I wish it came in a hard back; mine is falling apart.
