Book Description
Using the clinical model of the whiplash syndrome, this groundbreaking book describes the alterations in brain chemistry and function induced in individuals by what is known as traumatic stress or traumatization-experiencing a life-threatening event while in a state of helplessness. The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease presents evidence of the resulting and relatively permanent alteration in neurophysiology, neurochemistry, and neuronal organization-changes correlated with many of the most common, yet poorly understood, physical complaints and diseases, including whiplash, migraines, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and other painful, difficult-to-treat conditions.
short blurb for Whiplash catalogs: "Why does my neck still ache so much? The accident was months ago. My doctor thinks I'm crazy or lazy or faking it. What's wrong with me?"
What's wrong, according to The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease, is that physical traumas and emotional traumas are powerfully interrelated. After decades of research into brain chemistry, Dr. Scaer has identified some of the ways that the helplessness and terror of sudden trauma induce changes in brain function and the resulting consequences these measurable chemical changes can have on muscles, digestion, blood pressure, and many other bodily systems. Using the clinical model of the whiplash syndrome, this electrifying book offers new hope to anyone suffering from whiplash, post-traumatic stress disorder, or a history of abuse. It even provides ways to cope with new traumas to minimize the emotional and physical damage!

The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease.......2007-06-08
I have been studying and working with trauma for over 15 years. This is the
best book to this date which describes the neurological, emotional, and
therapeutic indices of working in this field.

The body does bear the burden.......2006-01-31
When a thoughtful individual takes the time to summarize 30 years of experience, I view this as a great gift. When his insights allow us to help in treatment, it is a blessing. His major thesis is that trauma, when it produces a chronic stress disorder, can manifest in peculair physical ways. This is the key insight and Dr. Scaer backs his observations with lots of clinical and research data. No doubt some will find this a rigorous read, but it is well worth the effort. I had the opportunity to try this theory. A teacher in a rough part of town ( I live in NYC) witnessed in his class a fight where a student viciously punched a girl in the head, when the teacher interevened, the next blow was to the back of his head sending him into the chalk board and breaking his glasses. He presented 5 days later with classic post concussion syndrome of impaired memory, inablility to read and other congnitve deficits. Before I read Dr. Scaer's book, I would have have not been able to treat him, for, from a medical point of view, it was all the brain banging aroung in his skull that caused this. However, Dr. Scaer made me think that this was instead a PTSD from having witnessed a vicious attack. I treated him with EFT and remarkably two days later he was normal! (This would have usually taken many weeks). We are all searching for ways to treat PTSD, but at least we can now view some mystifying symptoms in a model for which hopefully soon we will be able to fix. Kudos, Dr. Scaer.
Remember That College Textbook You Just Hated?.......2005-03-24
I started out as a lit major, then switched to linguistics. I worked three years as a medical transcriptionist. I've never had trouble reading anything. But this book is so full of fourteen-letter words, acronyms, and other jargon, it's just plain unpleasant to read.
The information is sound, and definitely interesting. But if you just want to understand the physiology of trauma, read the first section of Levine's "Waking The Tiger" instead (the rest of the book is rhetoric); it's a quick and easy read and presents the same basic information.
And if you're a PTSD sufferer, this is definitely not the book for you! It's written by an M.D. for those interested in the physical aspects of trauma, but offers absolutely no help (or even resources) for trauma patients. Try one of the breathing books or tapes by Gay Hendricks. Hendricks addresses releasing trauma directly and clearly.
Explains PTSD Like Nothing Else.......2003-06-13
Here finally is the neurological basis for the weirdly persistent, highly distressing, ever-cycling symptoms of posttraumatic stress. Don't let the medical terminology stop you from reading this book. It's a stunning revelation to see how physiologically based this syndrome really is, rooted as it is in the survival imperative of the freeze response and it's cognitive partner, dissociation. Makes those diagnostic categories which most of us therapists got trained on pretty irrelevant! I leaned heavily on the fabulous info in this book to write my own chapter on the physiology of PTSD. It's a must read for people with PTSD, their family, friends and counselors.
Book Description
Focusing on the wealth of information emerging in the area of energy medicine, this unique resource explores mechanisms by which mind and body processes influence the body's healing and performance potential. Content draws on an extraordinary range of sources to explore theories of human energy from physiology and biophysics, to examples drawn from the realms of "spontaneous healing," cutting-edge athletic and artistic performance, the martial arts, and various contemplative and spiritual practices. Providing new insights and theoretical models, it offers ways to apply these concepts directly, practically, and clinically.

Wonderful, enlightening.......2007-04-02
So much fascinating information about the human bio electrical system, and how even the tiniest current of electricity can effect it. I couldn't stop reading it. Every chapter opened my eyes wider to the possibilities for creating health even with the amount of current contained in the impulse of a faint thought or intention.
I wish the print were a bit larger and the pages not so shiny, because it made it harder to read. Otherwise a very great book!
A little disappointing.......2005-10-19
Anyone reading the title of this book might justifiably assume it was going to deal with the type of energy manifested in Qi Gong, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), acupuncture, Quantum-Touch and many other energy therapies - subtle energy it is often called.
The author does not want to deal with this type of energy, and admits as much, though he is careful to say he does not deny its existence. His book is devoted mainly to electromagnetic phenomena, of which there are plenty, of course, but this is not the healing energy as I understand and use it.
I have to give it four stars as it is very thorough in its limited scope; otherwise I would only have given it three precisely because it does not deal with what I see as the primary healing energy, but only with what I regard as secondary phenomena.
It's an expensive book and I am sorry I bought it, it may be useful to some, but not to me.
A Mind-Boggling New Scientific Understanding.......2004-03-02
James Oschman has done it, he's presenting us with the rare gift of a breakthrough understanding of the human condition that includes a profound new theory of the mechanisms of life, one with critically important clinical implications. In prose that reads like a good adventure story he presents with great clarity, comprehensiveness, and extensive endnotes a mind-boggling story from the frontiers of biophysics. Reading merely the introduction to this immensely important book will open your mind to a radically different paradigm of human functioning, one that is laying the foundation for more fully understanding all kinds of phenomena of living processes that heretofore have remained insoluble mysteries.
He discusses the nature of scientific revolution and how once shunned and ignored ideas move into the mainstream of orthodoxy only to be replaced in turn. It is time for some of the most fundamental assumptions of medical and life sciences to be examined, time for these new ideas to be tested.
Dr. Oschman cites voluminous evidence from scientific journals demonstrating that along with the communication systems we are most familiar with, the nervous and endocrine systems, there are other communication and regulatory systems that can only be understood when we look deeper into ourselves than the realms of organs and cells and even molecules with all of their complex iterations and interactions. We must go into the quantum realm of subatomic particles if we would understand the nature of life.
Biophysicists have been doing this in their labs and specialized journals but their discoveries have had little effect outside their field. What Jim has so ably accomplished that no one else has done and which is so vitally important is to carefully scrutinize this burgeoning material with the eyes of a comprehensivist and synthesize it into a new paradigm that sheds light on so many mysteries from the everyday questions of how living organisms regulate disparate functions, generate energy, et cetera. In doing so a number of fascinating questions arise in the mind of the scientifically literate that scream for investigation. So many questions that have resisted our best minds' efforts at understanding appear now ready to be answered, and give rise to the next layer of questions.
Life functions cannot be understood so long as the investigation holds to the familiar realms. We now have the tools and with Jim's contribution the theoretical framework to carry our investigation of life and especially human life into the next domain of quantum realities. The practical results, if this work is given the resources it needs, will surely be immensely important. Questions about the extraordinary and well-documented events that sometimes occur in activities like sports, the martial arts, and various healing modalities can now be investigated rationally - and perhaps someday if we do the work these now rare and inexplicable phenomena will be harnessed and reliably produced for the well-being of us all.
The evidence for this "second" nervous system, one that functions much more rapidly, is near infinitely more complex, and magnitudes of order more sensitive than the nervous system we are so familiar with is conclusive. And this system has been right in front of our eyes and under our hands all along, we just didn't have scientific tools with sufficient sensitivity to perceive and investigate it until recently. I urge everyone interested in these vital issues to get this book and spread the word.

Book Description
This comprehensive volume examines the interrelationships of nitrogen and energy nutrition of ruminants. It provides exhaustive coverage of basic concepts, applications, and new research developments.
Rumen microbial activity is emphasized. The author, an expert in animal nutrition, discusses new systems of determining dietary energy requirements, the effect of processing feedstuffs, and stress factors. He reviews the availability of nutrients in grains, distillers' grain residues, oilseed meals, molasses, silages, pastures, crop residues, and aquatic plants. Growth stimulants, nutritional management of ruminants in feedlots and pastures, and the value of feed additives are also among the topics considered.
The scope of coverage provided by this volume will make it the leading reference for teachers, researchers, consultants, livestock producers, feed manufacturers, and all others who are involved in ruminant feeding and nutrition.
From the Preface: This volume covers research on various nitrogen and energy feedstuffs and defines terminology commonly utilized in nitrogen and energy nutrition. The utilization of nitrogen and energy in oilseed meals, fish meals, cereal grains, distillers' residues, molasses, silages, grasses, hays, crop residues, animal waste, and nonprotein nitrogen sources is discussed. Details are given on development and utilization of net energy systems, systems for balancing total nitrogen, and nonprotein nitrogen with total digestible nutrients (TDN) or energy components of ruminant diets. Discussions are presented on metabolism, feedlot, milking, and grazing trials. Growth stimulants, processing of feedstuffs, type of animal, and environmental and management factors that affect feed intake, growth, feed efficiency, and quality of product are reviewed.
Emphasis is given to the contributions of ruminal microbes in upgrading forage and nonprotein nitrogen sources to higher-quality bacterial protein, as well as their ability to downgrade high-quality protein and waste nitrogen when protein is fed in excess of microbial needs. Research is presented on means to increase bypassing of the rumen to prevent nitrogen wastage when ruminants are fed concentrate diets. Contributions of ruminal microbes in utilizing cellulosic materials as lignocellulose and hemicellulose as well as starch and other carbohydrates are discussed.

Customer Reviews:
I'm so glad this is back in print!.......2006-11-06
A few years ago, the only way to get this was, to cough up $100! And I think it probably would have been worth that.
I've heard that some people thought he was a bit of a crack, however, I can vouch for many of the exercises I've done from this little book. I've got a few of his books and have read them, although as I decided to do Bioenergetic therapy (a body work therapy) as a client, I decided it probably was best I didnt read too much because my aim was to release tension from my body and resolve issues from my past, not to get more into my head.
I have vivid memories of process I did realising that before I started on a scale of 1 to 100 the holding and tension in my shoulders was 100, it went down to maybe 80 after some ongoing work and during a process I had an experience of a zero, no constriction in those muscles at all. It was a shocking realisation, something that startles me as I reflect on it even to this day.
OK, back to the book! There's not a lot of theory in here, go to his other books if you want that. In any case, I dont accept everything he writes as being true and neither should you. Like everyone he has his own perspective, shaped by his experiences and unique worldview. Many of the exercises though are both simple, easy to do and of excellent value. While I think it's best obviously to do Bioenergetics with someone who's trained in it (I think it's about a six year, very experiential, training course), there are exercises in this book you can do without such a person. They assist with self expression, anger (a biggie for most people), breathing properly (are you breathing as you read this?), holding in relation to stored sexual tension, being in touch with your body, massage techniques and grounding among others. Many are VERY effective for getting into your body. And when I've had that experience through bionergetics, I've realised, quite clearly, I have not desire to be 'in my head'.
It's a very practical book, with many illustrations, questions for debriefs and recommendations. What you get in terms of the dozens of excercises outlined in there that you can do at home, for the current list price, it's a steal.
I highly recommend this book.
Not your typical self help book.......2005-12-06
The idea that there is a physical component to every psychological problem has always intigued me, and I had previously read a number of Alexander Lowen's books, and found them fascinating. Recently, I became very depressed over something in my life, a failure on my part to achieve something which on the surface level I could say to myself it's understandable, but beneath the surface I was judging myself very harshly. I went into therapy and also bought a number of self help / psychology books, nothing seemed to help much. I was having some pretty extreme physical tensions, and I remembered about Lowen and Bioenergetics. So I got this book, and what I can say is that doing some of the exercises in the book, in particular some of the exercises dealing with expressing anger, helped considerably. And it helped where the normal self help books did nothing. If you are having difficulty in your life and you find yourself interested in this approach, I recommend this book. It certainly won't cost you much and you might be surprised at it's impact.

Biological Thermodynamics.......2007-01-09
For people with little insight (but interest) in thermodynamics this book is mandatory. For me personally it has been a quick way to freshen up the concepts of thermodynamics. The book is in large parts well written with many easy to understand examples of otherwise diffucult topics.
An interesting book.......2004-07-20
I teach a course in thermodynamics for college students in biology, as such, I thought the book could be useful, perhaps the new textbook for my course.
Possitive things:
* you will find real thermodynamics, biology and also historical notes in the book.
* there are not too many books that blend biology and thermodynamics in forms acceptable to biologist and physicists, this one does.
* it has an interesting selection of subjects
Problems:
* most of the time it has TOO many words, for those that like concise presentations, it is a problem. There are no evident forms to distinguish essential from accesory
* there is a bias towards bio-chemistry that introduces some additional difficulties for people with other backgrounds
My recommendation to the students
Main text: Kondepudi and Prigogine. Modern Thermodynamics
(extremely clear, concise and with historical notes but little biology)
Second text: Biological Thermodynamics by Haynie
Exciting!.......2004-01-08
Although Mrs. Faversham is revealed as the murderer in the first third of the book, the joy is in the chase. Dr. Haynie's Inspector Thorndyke is a valuable addition to mystery fiction. Although the subplot about the stuttering pan flute player seemed a little belaboured.
Good Scientific Text.......2002-01-11
This book is cleverly written. What comes through on every page is Dr. Haynie's breadth of knowledge and enthusiasm for his subject. Dr. Haynie proved that a good scientific text need not be boring. Students who want to learn how thermodynamics relates to everyday life and how their body works will love this book.
This book might become a classic.......2002-01-10
I'm a Ph.D. student in computational modeling specializing in applications in physics and bioinformatics. My bachelor's degree is in biophysics. I have read numerous biosciences books and texbooks by leading authors. In my opinion this book is one of the best biophysics books I have ever read. I found this book accessible, which is important for students, and yet engaging. The author provides broad coverage of the subject and thoroughly explains basic concepts. For instance, the first law is covered in its own chapter, as is the second law. There are two chapters of Gibbs free energy, with many practical applications, and one on statistical thermodynamics. The chapter on kinetics is an appropriate complement to a book whose main subject is thermodynamics. The final chapter reads like a popular book, introducing students to a number of very interesting and exciting areas for research. This is truly a unique textbook. My guess is that this book might become a classic.
Book Description
NARCISSISM
Are you a narcissist? Do you interact with someone who is? Contrary to popular belief, narcissists do not love themselves or anyone else. They cannot accept their true selves, constructing instead fixed masks that hide emotional numbness. Influenced by forces in culture and predisposed by factors in the human personality, narcissists tend to be
More concerned with how they appear than what they feel
Seductive and manipulative, striving for power and control
Egotists, focused on their own interests but lacking the true values of the self -- self-expression, self-possession, dignity, and integrity
Without a solid sense of self, which leads them to experience life as empty and meaningless
In this groundbreaking study, Dr. Alexander Lowen uses his extensive clinical experience to demonstrate how narcissists can recover their suppressed feelings and regain their lost humanity. By the use of Bioenergetic Analysis, the psychotherapy created by Dr. Lowen, a new possibility of a fulfilling and authentic life is presented for people with narcissistic characteristics and for those who interact with them.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful and helpful.......2006-09-06
One of my family members is narcissist. This book explained why I sufferred so much from this person.
A book for the narcissist, not the narcissist's victims.......2006-06-18
If you are the victim of a narcissist in the first stages of learning about narcissism there are several excellent books available about this disorder that will be much more readable and more helpful to you. It is important that you not make this the one book you read on the subject. The very best book is by Sam Vaknin, who wrote a review of Lowen's book on Amazon. Vaknin's book is entitled "Malignant Self Love". Vaknin pulls no punches in telling the victim of the narcissist the facts of life: your narcissist does not love you, never has and never will. Things will not get better. Get out before you are abused further. Vaknin does not hold out false hopes that therapy will make it all better. Although of course all narcissists are not the same, their treatment of others ALWAYS follows very specific, very destructive patterns. Narcissists specialize in using lies and false encouragement to get others to do their bidding, and a narcissist is perfectly capable of going to therapy, manipulating the therapist, and using the experience to feed the disorder, not cure it. Lowen's work, on the other hand, seems to center on the narcissist as the victim of the disorder, minimizing the destruction caused to people in the narcissist's life. For that reason might be more encouraging and helpful to the narcissist himself, as opposed to the narcissist's family. There is good information in this book about the origins of the disorder. So if you are the narcissist, read this book. I'm sure it will help you to understand your disorder. If you are the victim of a narcissist, please don't take Lowen's book as a sign that you should stay with a narcissist and think the condition is treatable. Personality disorders are almost impossible to treat.
Look a little deeper.......2005-11-21
The subject matter of this book is fascinating, no question about it. I found myself looking beyond the professional-speak to try to get to the heart of the writing, and to understand the treatment methods he uses & discusses.
What really turned me off, though, and caused me to stop reading it completely, was when he relates one instance where, in the name of therapy, he leans over 12 inches from the face of one patient (who by the way he treats on a bed, not a traditional therapist's couch), and ask "do you want to kiss me?". (Although he is very careful to say "I don't kiss my patients, but I do permit them to express their feelings verbally.)
As if the people he is treating are not confused and troubled enough......I am certainly no professional, but that alone seems like it would be cause for a lawsuit at the least, or professional license revocation at the most.
That said, there are many other books on the market with a more practical, readable, and sensible approach to the difficult subject of narcissism.
Narcissism, the original sin !!.......2005-04-17
Dr. Lowen has written one of the best books on the topic of narcissism. In a narcissistic, consumeristic, power hungry, and youth oriented society, this book will make a great hit !
I would highly recommend it for the brave mind that is interested in learning this subject. it's a book worth reading. "Narcissism, Denial of the True Self" will provide the reader with clear insight and education about this prevalent individual and societal disorder.
Well Written.......2004-10-01
I enjoyed this book. Also, found it quite helpful -- since I know a Narcissist personally. But, I didn't realize that he had a clinical condition prior to reading this book. It fit him like a glove!!! I don't find Dr. Lowen's Freudian orientation objectionable--that's his perspective. Yes, it would have been nice if he had delineated alternate (non-Freudian) theories too, but it isn't required. After all, he probably doesn't agree with them. Unlike some of the reviewers, I don't think Freudian theory has been utterly displaced in psychology. I think there's room for lots of approaches and that if psychologists and therapists took a more eclectic view, they'd be far more successful in treating their clients/patients. By the way, while I did study Freud (and others) in colleges, I'm basically a Jungian layman--not a Freudian.
Customer Reviews:
it's a skimmer.......2006-06-13
okay, i usually enjoy reading body/mind texts, but this one was a bit dry. there is usefull and thought-proviking information within it, although i had to skip around and skim to find it. sometimes long-winded, sometimes self-reighteous, it is worth the read, but buy it used.
A Mixed Bag.......2006-05-24
This book contains great insight and a very helpful, refreshing perspective of the human condition. However, it is also unintentionally humorous--and quite unhelpful--from the perspective that Alexander Lowen's primary aim is to be famous. He says so in a direct quote at the beginning of the book, and underscores his aim by citing his own work in footnote after footnote.
Half of the focus of this book is on delivering information. The other half is on delivering Alexander Lowen. That didn't work for me.
Great Book!.......2001-03-09
Lowen's book does what they all do -- it gets us back in touch with our genuine, inner selves by making the emotional expression of oneself through the body the vehicle for authentic self-expression and spontaneity. It liberated me to feel more spontaneously without self-judgment and self-criticism, and to express my feelings without fear of judgment by others. If you're having trouble feeling or being fully conscious of yourself and your feelings, read Lowen's books and give some thought to Bioenergetic psychotherapy -- both will help tremendously.

Simply Awesome.......2004-11-25
There's no other quite like it - Brooks' is the best there is...
Gold Standard.......2002-12-30
This work is the Gold Standard to which all other Exercise Physiology books are measured. I was introduced to the Second Edition of the book in an entry-level class in Graduate school. To this day I find it a necessary reference from my library.
Personally, the most useful information to me is on Energetics as it pertains to athletics, training adaptations, exercise testing and prescription. I use this information to help me decide how to train athletes from different sports. But, there is so much more than that in this book. Metabolism, Ventilation, Heart and Circulation (including CVD) is all covered thoroughly.
I especially like Brooks' approach to physiology. Brooks, likes to examine physiology by studying the rate-limiting processes. And to a coach, like me, finding weakness and improving that weakness is crucial to winning. Another topic I enjoy is Brooks' take on the misnomer of Anaerobic Threshold and Lactic Acid.
It's an extremely well-organized, well-written text. It's easy to read and a challenge at the same time. Brooks makes you think and delivers difficult information in a way that is easier to understand than other textbooks.

An excellent compendium on work physiolgy.......2000-06-21
I received both my B.S., and M.S. in Exercise Biochemistry from Univ. of Mass, and Univ. of Colorado, Boulder, respectively. My former advisor studied under Brooks at Berkely (He received his Doctorate there). In any event the approach our department undertook towards exercise biochemistry/physiology was at the cell and molecular level. Brooks text was central to the program. What is great about the book, is that it explains complicated biochemical processes in easy to understand language and places it in the context of applied physiology. The book stacks up to classic texts like Molecular Biology of the Cell (Albert, Bray, Lewis), and many of the classic biochemistry texts. In my opinion it is far superior to texts by McArdle & Katch, or Textbook of Work Physiology (author escapes me, for now).
Excellent textbook! I still use it as a major ref........1998-11-12
I would have to agree with most experts in this field, that Brooks did a smashing job when writing this text. His chapters on bioenergetics are superlatively done. Outstanding graphs, analogies ,coupled with an eazy to understand vennacular. The chapter on bioenergetics is extremly lucid when explaining the esoteric aspects of coupled energy metabolism and muscle performance. Brad Nindl from (Penn State University) and Dr. Paul Arciero (Skidmore College) still utlize his text, and often refere to his chapters on energy metabolism and exercise. Many of our lively discussions and research ideas were spurred by Brooks text. Not only does this text service as an outstanding learning tool, when learning the basic concepts of exercie physiology, but acts as a catalyst for innovative ideas for new research. The references are all up to date, providing eazy access to "cutting-edge" researchers. His chapters on cardiovascular physiology are well organized and follow the same lucid format of the previous chapters, however, i wish he included information on the newer developments in cardiovascular physiology and exercise, such as the work being currently conducted on signial transduction and on the dysregualtion of the sacroplasmic reticulum during CHF etc.. Overall i would recommand this textbook to any serious student, scholar, physician or allied health professional who is wishing to futher their understanding of this fastinating subject. I am currently using his text as a major ref. for preparing for part I of the USMLE!! Yours In Great Learning
