Mediocre, at best.......2006-02-27
So what if UCLA uses this as their primary freshman text? UCSD (where I go), MIT, and other schools use it too, and every student I've met agrees that this book is sub-par. It isn't as clear as it can be, is bereft of example problems that apply to the homework, has at least a few mistakes per chapter in the solutions manual, spends way too much time deriving some (useless) things more applicable to physical chemisty, etc.
Great!.......2005-10-06
I got the order sooner than i expected and it was in exactly the condition they said it was in. I am very pleased with my order.
Confusion.......2004-12-21
Book layout is overly confusing. Text is sometimes not as clear as can be and needs more practice examples (most apparent in sections like isomers and titrations). Yes like one person said before, UCLA does use this text to teach Life science majors, but there are better choices. There are numerous mistakes in the solution guides still, and Zumdahl's "Chemical Principles" is a much better read in my opinion. I actually used it to clear up points this text was muddy on. Your mileage may vary.
Generally good.......2004-03-02
This is one of the more advanced general chem textbooks available. It has a review section at the beginning of the book for those who are not quite ready for college level chemistry. Unlike its two main competitors(Principles of Modern Chemistry by Oxtoby and Chemical Principles by Zumdahl), it introduces quantum chemistry (at very basic level) first. If you have hard time with this book, you might have to go down a level and find a text for regular science major general chemistry, for example, Brown/LeMay/Bursten or Moore/Stanitski/Jurs.
THE COLLOGE 1ST SEMESTER HONORS CHEM BOOK.......2004-01-05
I used this book for my 1st semester Honors Chemistry class at Cornell University (CHEM 215). Even though Chem is not my favorite science subject (I'm an electrical engineer, so I prefer physics instead) I have to say the combination of book and professor (Benjamin Widom), makes me remember that class as my favorite one during my first semester at Cornell. I wouldn't listen too much to the negative reviewer (Who wrote this book?). The book is not bad at all; it is just focused towards students who are going to be majoring on Chemistry (Pre-Meds). But that doesn't make it "bad". I do recognize that there are some typos in this edition that our professor easily corrected (that's why I gave it a 4 and not a 5).

Book Description
Physical Metallurgy Principles is intended for use in an introductory course in physical metallurgy and is designed for all engineering students at the junior or senior level. The approach is largely theoretical, but covers all aspects of physical metallurgy and behavior of metals and alloys. The treatment used in this textbook is in harmony with a more fundamental approach to engineering education.
Customer Reviews:
May be great reference, but not good for learning.......2007-05-04
It has been three years since I had taken a material science-like course. So, I had hoped, that by opening this book, I would relearn the concepts I had forgotten.
Focus:
An intense look at the physcial metallurgy of metals, beginning with methods, going to crystallography, phase diagrams, and focusing on specific metals (iron-carbon, steels, etc.).
Good:
This book goes into great details. Metallography, crystallography are explained, many concepts are in great depth.
Bad:
This is absolutely not a good book if you don't know much on the subject or are rusty (like me). A lot of time is spent on the intricacies on microscopy. Many of the concepts are presented in too much detail. I feel that instead of learning about the properties of materials and material selection that I spend most of the time learning about every detail involved in the creation of dislocations. While this is very informative, as an engineer, I need to be able to select apropos materials, not spout how an electron microscope works or the fine details in edge dislocation. Homework problems are odd. And would it hurt if the pictures could have been colored?
Overall:
Again, good reference. Bad at teaching or reteaching you material science.
Very good foundation.......2000-06-24
I believe that this book is an excellent text for understanding physical metallurgy for the beginner . This is also an excellent reference manual for later information.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-05-22
Stellar text. Very thorough and easy to read. New version is in color, and has several new chapters. I'm very happy with the new edition
The Luminescence Bible.......2007-03-09
What's more to say? This is the authoritative, the definitive volume for luminescence experiments from theory to all of the most useful applications. It is readable, dense, useful and indispensable if you do fluorescence, lifetime measurements, energy transfer studies, etc., etc.
A most worthy successor to the first edition.......1999-09-14
In the sixteen years since the appearance of the first edition of Lakowicz's Principles of Fluorescence Spectroscopy, the use of fluorescence as an analytical tool has grown remarkably, especially in instrumentation, available fluorophores, and practical applications. Therefore, it shouldn't be surprising that the second edition of the work has more than doubled in size.
The approach is the same as that in the first edition: fluorescence spectroscopy from the viewpoint of a biophysical chemist. Explanations are clear. References are profuse; they now number well over a thousand and include an additional appendix that cites many books and review articles for additional reading. Figures are also plentiful; no fancy color diagrams a la contemporary biochemistry texts, but basic line drawings, primarily adapted from journal articles.
The first three chapters ("Introduction to Fluorescence", "Instrumentation for Fluorescence Spectroscopy", and "Fluorophores") are an excellent brief (93-page) introduction to the whole field. Most of the remaining 19 chapters are organized around the kinds of photophysical processes and spectroscopic quantities that are relevant to fluorescence. These include very thorough treatments of fluorescence lifetimes, quenching, anisotropy, and energy transfer. There are many examples drawn from journal articles. In addition, the work now covers more of the technological applications of fluorescence, especially in chapters on "Fluorescence Sensing" and "DNA Technology". These give a sense of the great contributions that fluorescence has made to biotechnology.
My own work involves varied applications of fluorescence to biotechnology, and the second edition of Lakowicz is my reference book of choice. It would also be an excellent text for a graduate course on fluorescence in a chemistry or biochemistry department. All in all, this is a most worth successor to the first edition.
Great book, new edition out soon.......1999-06-10
Joe Lakowicz has just finished a thorough revision of this classic work, which should be coming out soon. Highly recommended.
An excellent book for an overview on fluorometry.......1999-05-12
Introduces the reader to the basic physics and physical chemistry of fluorescence phenomena, fluorometry techniques and covers advanced topics as well. An excellent textbook.

Customer Reviews:
Not so good.......2007-09-18
I have to use this textbook for one of my classes, and I must say, it is horrible. The examples for problems in the book hardly give any explanation of what they are doing. The questions at the end of the chapter are very difficult and looking back at the chapter just makes the question even more confusing. I like to use textbooks when I do not understand what is going on in my class, but this one does not help at all! I think the only way you can understand this book is if you are already well educated in the course. Everytime I am assigned problems in the book, I cringe, because I know I am going to be spending hours being more confused than I have ever been in my life.
Instrumental text book review.......2007-07-20
This book covers the basics of instrumental analysis well. This is not a book for someone who needs colored illustrations and flashy pictures. The key words do not jump out of the page like many of the new undergraduate text books. The text is to the point. As with any textbook, there are some minor errors, but this book is better than some others I've encountered.
alternatives to this book.......2007-03-09
I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews of this book. I found it to be very solid.
For those of you who don't like it you have 3 options:
either "Instrumental Methods of Analysis" by Willard, Merritt, Dean, Settle; (ISBN 0534081428) which is excellent and a true classic.
or "Chemical Analysis: Modern Instrumentation Methods and Techniques" by Francis Rouessac & Annick Rouessac
or "Chemical Instrumentation: A Systematic Approach" by Strobel and Heineman. This book, however, is very hardware oriented and not a general instrumental analysis text.
I would also recommend that you buy "Statistics and Chemometrics for Analytical Chemistry" by James N. Miller & Jane C. Miller. It does a much better job than the cursory chapters found in regular analytical texts. Get the 4th or 5th edition. For a paperback, this book is ridiculously expensive if you buy new. Try to find a used copy.
While the book by Miller & Miller is good, it's no substitute for a 1 or 2 semester course in stats. A good book for this material might be Statistics for Research, Third Edition by Shirley Dowdy, Stanley Wearden, Daniel Chilko (ISBN 047126735X)
Check out my other reviews for other undergrad. chem books.
So disorganized a book that it hurts.......2005-12-24
There is no clear organization in this book. Seems like they took many papers and at random picked paragraphs out of them. The only place they show organization is when they are introducing stuff in a chapter.
Works as a reference book because you can look in the back and find the 6 or seven places your topic of interest is scattered in the book. but in general the gain of knowledge through the organization of this book is near to impossible.
The authors of this book should be ashamed of themselves for doing such harm to Chemistry students.
Style of writing is painful.......2005-09-02
Just start reading the introduction, or flip to anywhere in this book to see all you need to know about it's readability: a bit rough to say the least.
For example, in the introduction, the concept of carrying binary data in a shorter period of time on a wire than several measured pulses was presented in such a confusing manner that I was forced to read it 4 times to understand what was already a simple and understood concept to me. The excessive formality of this book is a killer.. It reads at times like a formal mathematics proof book, however, at other times it is a bit more readable.
Like people said.. use this for reference.. not for a textbook.

The latest principles, processes, and practices
Chemical engineering design is in a constant state of flux. From advances in the practice of separation operations in chemical engineering to corresponding changes in the curriculum, much has happened in the seven years since the publication of Seader and Henley's first edition of Separation Process Principles, including: (1) advances in the fundamentals of mass, heat, and momentum transport, (2) wide availability of computer programs to facilitate the application of mathematical models to a wide range of separation operations, (3) increasing interest in separations involving the solid phase, and (4) changes in the practice of chemical engineering to emphasize product design as well as process design. This second edition reflects these changes.
Highlights of the second edition
- Chapter on crystallization, including thermodynamic and transport aspects, the MSMPR crystallizer model, and treatments of screen analysis, desublimation, and evaporation
- Chapter on drying of solids, including treatments of psychrometry and several dryer mathematical models
- Chapter on leaching of solids, including a discussion of the espresso machine
- Substantial new sections on ultrafiltration and microfiltration, including detailed examples
- Added section on simulated-moving-bed adsorption, including detailed examples
- Expansion of the treatment of batch distillation to include optimal control
- New sections on hybrid systems and membrane cascades
- Now includes 214 examples and 649 homework exercises

Aspen heavy.......2006-07-01
During my final year of undergrad coursework I used this textbook for my design courses. The good thing is Dr. Seader was the professor for my second design course. As a teacher I think he is great with an ability to effectively communicate theory and its practical application without getting caught up in the details. Unfortunately I felt this textbook tries to consolidate the knowledge he has gained in his career resulting in a very dense book. Some problems are solved using direct calculations but a large amount are done using Aspen (a program no one in my class had used) which I felt didn't adequately help develop sequential problem solving skills. The costing analysis theory is good but most of us used Peters & Timerhaus for homework. If you work with Aspen or want a detailed book this will satisfy your desires.
It gets no stars from me.......2006-05-27
My professor for separations was really smart, but like most chemical engineering professors that I have met, they are too smart for their own good. He chosed this book because it was "easy to understand".
Chemical engineering is hard enough, and the fact that this book is used in most separations classes does not help. Each chapter starts off with an industrial example, which is confusing if you're not familar with it already. The authors just throw out concepts that you've never heard before and assume you're an industry expert. As thorough as the book is, you won't feel like a better person after having read it. The authors don't seem to want to teach the subject but rather flaunt their knowledge. The most annoying thing is when the authors get to solving problems. They just start applying equation after equation and don't tell the readers where they get it from. Sometimes, it's not even an equation from that chapter or from the book!
I don't consider myself a bad student, but I seriously could not do most of the assigned problems at the end of the book. How do I become a chemical engineer then? I prefer McCabe's Unit Operations in Chemical Engineering. Although it is not as thorough, and the equations are presented differently, I actually learned something and was interested in the subject matter. The authors relate the theory to real life, and it actually makes sense. In fact, I had to use the McCabe to solve some of the problems from this hellish book.
Bad book to start learning the subject from.......2004-12-19
I had this book as an undergrad and it was terrible. Presentation is muddy, dense, and esoteric - difficult to wade through. We also happened to have a poor teacher for the course; my whole class was lost the entire semester. It felt like a near total waste of time, and it was disconcerting not to know what was going on. Now that I am a grad student in chemical engineering I've actually found parts of the book useful as reference material. But if you have a mediocre teacher, you're new to the subject (undergrad), and this is your assigned textbook I suggest you get supplementary material if you want to know what is going on. I would recommend you get your supplementary material at the beginning of the semester, too, before you get lost in the woods. A search through Amazon on different mass transport books should help you find the right book. Be sure to read reviews before buying though so you don't get stuck with two bad books. There's always Google too if you're stuck with the book, don't have a reference and want to decode what the heck is going on.

Book Description
The field of synthetic membrane science and technology is an active, growing field involving an interdisciplinary mixture of polymer chemistry, physical chemistry, and chemical engineering. Some membrane processes are reasonably well understood, and have been commercialised for some period of time. Other membrane processes have only recently been employed in commercial applications, and still other processes are only in formative research stages.
This volume gives a comprehensive compendium of the basic principles in the field of synthetic membranes. The following topics are covered: basic aspects of membrane processes; materials and material properties; membrane preparation and characterisation; membrane transport; concentration polarisation and fouling; process and module design. The second edition of this well-established text has been considerably expanded and updated, and many chapters now contain sections giving solved and unsolved problems.
Audience: This book is recommended as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a comprehensive reference for engineers, scientists, and technical management.

Book Description
The new edition of a classic text and reference
The large chains of molecules known as polymers are currently used in everything from "wash and wear" clothing to rubber tires to protective enamels and paints. Yet the practical applications of polymers are only increasing; innovations in polymer chemistry constantly bring both improved and entirely new uses for polymers onto the technological playing field. Principles of Polymerization, Fourth Edition presents the classic text on polymer synthesis, fully updated to reflect today's state of the art. New and expanded coverage in the Fourth Edition includes:
* Metallocene and post-metallocene polymerization catalysts
* Living polymerizations (radical, cationic, anionic)
* Dendrimer, hyperbranched, brush, and other polymer architectures and assemblies
* Graft and block copolymers
* High-temperature polymers
* Inorganic and organometallic polymers
* Conducting polymers
* Ring-opening polymer ization
* In vivo and in vitro polymerization
Appropriate for both novice and advanced students as well as professionals, this comprehensive yet accessible resource enables the reader to achieve an advanced, up-to-date understanding of polymer synthesis. Different methods of polymerization, reaction parameters for synthesis, molecular weight, branching and crosslinking, and the chemical and physical structure of polymers all receive ample coverage. A thorough discussion at the elementary level prefaces each topic, with a more advanced treatment following. Yet the language throughout remains straightforward and geared towards the student.
Extensively updated, Principles of Polymerization, Fourth Edition provides an excellent textbook for today's students of polymer chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials science, as well as a current reference for the researcher or other practitioner working in these areas.

Customer Reviews:
Must read for polymer chemistry!.......2003-11-01
Odian offers a comprehensive guide to polymer chemistry, covering nearly all the types of polymerization, exploring radical, ionic, step, and copolymerization mechanisms and kinetics in sufficient detail. Some recent advances in polymer synthesis are not covered, but book offers enough knowledge to have a good grasp of all aspects of polymerizations. A must read for anyone considering a career or education in polymer synthesis!
Great text book!.......2001-11-04
I took a course last year in Polymer Chemistry and this text was the standard text book. It was an amazingly great reference book. This book mainly target on Polymerization synthesis and characterization. If you are interested in the mechanical properties of polymer, you should look for other one. But this is a must for all polymer chemists and material scientists who are interested in polymer processing.
A handy reference.......2000-12-16
I have been using this book for several years, including a term where it was the primary text for a graduate-level Introduction to Polymers course. As textbooks go, I have found this one relatively easy to read, and the concepts easy to follow. It it quite comprehensive, but assumes an undergraduate background in organic and physical chemistry. Since the course, it has been a handy reference in my research, though, as someone else noted, it is lacking in respect to living polymerizations, particularly Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization. However, Odian's work remains one of the most useful textbooks from my graduate classes.
The standard text for teaching polymer chemistry........1999-06-26
The number of concepts covered in this book is amazing -- I learn something new with each reading. The book is also great for pointing you to the leading references in the field; although it is lacking decent coverage of living polymerization. Odian's book is not easy to read. For a chemistry book it includes relatively few chemical structures or mechanisms, so for students who don't already know chemistry it is a rather useless introduction A better introductory polymer chemistry book is by M. Stevens.
Impressive, despite recent reviews to the contrary........1996-07-22
Encyclopedic and comprehensive, this
text ought to be the sole reference work for undergrads and
graduates in the field of polymer science.

Book Description
As one of the most popular heat transfer texts, Jack Holman's HEAT TRANSFER is noted for its clarity, accessible approach, and inclusion of many examples and problem sets. The new Ninth Edition retains the straight-forward, to-the-point writing style while covering both analytical and empirical approaches to the subject. Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on physical understanding while, at the same time, relying on meaningful experimental data in those situations that do not permit a simple analytical solution. New examples and templates provide students with updated resources for computer-numerical solutions.
Customer Reviews:
The Good and the Bad.......2005-02-27
The Good:
- A nice amout of examples.
- Whatever is explained is explained pretty well.
- Friendly style of writing.
The Bad:
- No solution manual.
- Some mistakes in the solved examples.
The Worst:
- There is no focus on the heat transfer sceince itself - the equations are "dumped" on you with no explanations/development or even some example experiments that were made to get to the equations. The focus is on application of the equations to engineering problems and methods of solving differential equations.
The bottom line:
This book will not give you an understanding of the heat transfer science, but the ability to solve heat transfer problems. If that's what you look for - this is your book. Otherwise, look for something else.
Why only five stars?.......2004-07-24
This book is a winner . Forget about any other substitute . In this detailed text you will find all you want about every ine of the multiple equations about the heat transfer , clearly and powerful illustrated . The level of the problems are gradually increased so when you decide to solve them you will become in a real gladiator in this topic .
I recommend it deeply . Since I acquired it I noticed the little difference that makes the great difference . This is a heavyweight text and hardly you will find out another better than this .
A must for Chemical , Mechanical and Industrial engineers!
A League of Its Own.......2004-01-23
In Holman's (the author) spirit I'll keep this simple. This text (along with Moran/Shapiro's introductory text in thermodynamics) is among the best textbooks met during the course of a civil, aerospace or mechanical enginnering study. The language used constitutes what should be an "industrial standard" for engineering textbooks. It keeps the level of attention peaking by avoiding loose talk and wordy explanations where this is not required. This is (academic) litterature in its truest sense. I own about 50 science/engineering texts within fluid mechanics, solid mechanics/dynamics, mathematics, physics and more. Among these, this book is top three - no small feat.
textbook critic.......2003-11-30
This is a required classical text in most senior Mechanical Engineering programs. However, it was a difficult text to get through especially the sketchy discussed complex mathematical material -- if one is not well versed in Partial Differential Equations.
For most students, the text's analytical developments are difficult to grasp in the beginning since the author was inclinded to stay with the typical old style in writing engineering texts where as little as possible is given to the students!
I hope we're getting away from this rediculous old writing style and methodologies which ultimately needlessly blocks many good students from doing well or graduate.
Engineering textbook writers are slowly getting away from this horrible old style, by providing more comprehensive examples and making solutions manuals available to those students who wish to purchase them.
But, here I think that real market forces that brought about some needed change was the popular Schaum Outlines and REAs solution books -- giving the students what they really needed to do problems. So authors slowly began competing with these growing anciliary technical products!
Please note, in the past years, it was almost inhuman what technical students had to endure to get through their required courses to graduate.
Author J. P. Holman began in the 1960's with a really sketchy Heat Transfer textbook assuming students undestood the analytical proofs and then slowly began to make changes that gave the students more information in which to understand the complex analytical Partial Differential Equation derivations and solutions. The concepts of heat flow are not difficult it is the mathematics, the assumptions and the numerous steps reaching a solutions that is wild.
Hopefully, someday, we'll get away altogether from technical textbooks, which are inherently a 2-Dimensional medium, and move to modern medias that easily allow authors to write textbooks having 3-Dimensional data so students can quickly see and understand what the author is trying to convey.
Most technical courses deal with 3-Dimensional information so it is appropraite that authors move to new mediums soon and finally wean ourselves from technical textbooks altogether.

Holman Heat Transfer.......2003-11-12
A classical. Required reading for heat transfer design in heater convection sections. I found it simple and practical. By the way, I am looking for a new book (as mine was stolen).
